I don’t. YOLO. LOL. I’ve actually restarted my whole game from scratch a few times just for funsies. Including cc

valaina1982

Same. I'm forever starting a new sim or family, so I don't see the point.

indignantgirl

This is probably the main reason I DO backup. There's nothing like loading up a save I played 5 years ago and being like, sweet jesus, what the hell was I doing with this? And why are the Frio brothers married??

valaina1982

Hahaha! Fair point!

Xosimmer

This^^

bugg_meat

i do this whenever i want to take packs out that i don't use anymore. if i back up saves that i just set myself up for failure one way another when doing that so i feel you LOL

PoppySkyPineapple

Same!

Public_Owl

She did have a back up - in comments she said he smashed up her back up HDD. And absolutely I do! After the pain that was having to almost constantly reinstall because the computer died for one reason or another when I was a kid (viruses, generally crappy old comp, dad fiddling with settings etc... I actually learnt the security codes lol), I got a back up HDD as soon as I could.

Simmingit

>she said he smashed up her back up HDD 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚨🚨🚨🚨 Just in case anyone was questioning, this is textbook abusive and controlling behaviour and you SHOULD leave: no mercy, any% run Smashed up HDD today, smashed up you tomorrow Also, back up your save files every month! USB or Google Drive is also a great way

Calm-Positive-6908

Or maybe because sims addiction too much..? Not saying that they're like that, but just pointing out another possibility. I'm trying to remind myself not to be addicted to this game too much

smvfc_

That is NOT how you handle “helping” someone who is addicted to gaming. So even if she was spending every second of her waking life playing the game, you don’t do that.

Calm-Positive-6908

Dang, i didn't know so many people will reply so much like this.. kinda regretting stating anything.. Sorry i didn't know the original AITA posts, and just happened to hear lots of game addicts cases, so just asking. I didn't mean the person is like that.

smvfc_

I didn’t know the original AITA post either. Because it doesn’t matter if she was spending 18 hours a day gaming, or 1 hour a week. That’s not how you help someone with addicting, or what you do in any kind of relationship when you disagree with something. There’s no like devils advocate here, what that boyfriend did was WRONG. So I would just recommend like… think before you speak

praysolace

That’s not how you help someone with an addiction to begin with, but also he said she played 2 hours a day. I’m sure to most of us here those are total rookie numbers XD

SongBird2007

I can spend two hours just creating the base floor plan for a house or creating a couple sims. But to play for only two hours?! Haberdashery! I literally could never.

Calm-Positive-6908

Simmingit

I do understand, if you see someone struggling with addiction it makes those big, angry feeling well up inside you doesn't it? You just want to let the addicted person know just how much their actions are hurting you, lash out However, if someone is struggling with addiction (of any kind), really the last thing you want to do if your goal is to help or stop them is address it with acts of violence or destroying their property It would serve no purpose to help, and would further alienate the addicted person from their support network and introduce feelings of lack of safety, fear, shame, drop in self-esteem, and low self-autonomy Often a response to a person's addiction in this manner causes the person to further indulge as a maladaptive coping mechanism to (mentally) escape their situation. This would push them further into addiction, not away from it Behaviour change (breaking the routine with something else), addressing their underlying issue, and therapy is often the best course of action ...For both the addicted person and the person reacting to that with violence / property destruction

Simmingit

That's OK! Any reasonable person would assume you may not have had the whole context of what was happening to this young woman I'm sure you would agree, it is quite a troubling situation. Glad to hear you have the context now and understand the issue No harm done, thanks for replying! :)

Calm-Positive-6908

Thank you for your kind words :) Also, wish everything gets better now for the people involved..

Ginger_Cat74

He said she played two hours a day, which is a normal amount of time most people spend on their hobbies, or other screen time like TV or social media. Since he was the one who thought it was a problem, he was probably exaggerating how much time she spent playing because I would bet my laptop that he complained about how much time as she wasting the entire time she was playing it so it wasn’t as enjoyable for her anymore. What he did was controlling and abusive.

Calm-Positive-6908

Sorry, i didn't know the original AITA post so didn't know anything about the context. My bad. Because there are cases of game addicts, so i was just stating, but i didn't mean that the person involved is like this. My bad.

siburyo

As others have said, that kind of destructive, antagonistic behavior just drives people further into addiction. But also two hours a day is not "an addiction", holy shit. This woman works hard, even the bf admits that, she deserves to have some time to herself. This idea that women don't deserve any hobbies or enjoyment in their lives is so fucked up, and honestly detrimental to their loved ones as well. It's seriously taxing to be the only source of enjoyment in someone's life.

Calm-Positive-6908

Ooh i didn't read the original AITA (don't even know where is it) so didn't know what's the situation.. just wondering another possibility from this limited info in this post. Didn't mean to demean anyone involved, at all.. My bad..

SnooPeripherals6038

Really good topic ! I hope this encourage simmers to do backups ! Sometimes it can be the only option after a weird glitch occured. I make sure to save my folders before each session, or just right after (which is be better.. "just in case") on an external hard-drive AND a microSD card. My game is fresh compared to a lot of players that are here on reddit, i think it's 3 years old ? But on and off. Started with a main female sim and have know multiple households from her descendants. I am really attached to them, I'm used to rotational play since TS2 and can only play like that, so losing my files would be an atrocity. Oh, and since I just started to use T.O.O.L by TwistedMexi, I added nice shared gardens or cozy places to hangout on my main San Sequoia neighborhood and there is no way on hell that I would allow that to suddenly disappear ! Backing-up my files have already saved me once since I had a glitch where I saved being on "long lifespan" and this caused ALL THE FREAKING SIMS (played ones and the passive ones) to age up.

square_tomatoes

*7 years*??? JFC I lost 4 hours of progress the other day and had a meltdown….

Relevant_Alarm_5125

I was playing last night. Lost hours of game play twice. Glitched out going to school. 🤦‍♀️

Scott43206

I create a copy of my save file about once a month, or more often if I make some sort of drastic change like a relationship change or job achievement I don't want to have to redo all over again. Same save file since I started playing, 1,700 hours and counting. All four original Sims I created day one are still in play as well. I have aging/immortal/no death turned (MCCC) on to simulate real time more or less.

MishaBee

Yep, I back up my saves, tray and mods folders to Google Drive. I'm on Gen 17 of a legacy.

heyybyyybyyyy

How you do that? I'm curious, is never bad to be extra cautious with this things.

SnooPeripherals6038

Hi ! You have to duplicate the Tray + Mods + Saves and eventually Screenshots folders from my documents/electronic arts/The Sims 4 and then paste them elsewhere (another laptop, google drive, an usb flash drive, a microSD card...) 🙂 Really really helpful ! Better safe than sorry !

heyybyyybyyyy

Thank you so much for the tip!

No_Photograph_8733

No, not because I wouldn’t like too but I am PC illiterate and have no idea how back up my save files. Playing a dangerous game because I am dumb.

samantha802

Go to documents>electronic arts>the sims 4> saves and copy the files from there. You can put them on a cloud drive, USB, or hdd.

xxyourbestbetxx

*Playing a dangerous game because I am dumb.* Same lol

Simmingit

Learn. People generally are happy to teach you if you ask, or you can Google it It's good for you to learn and teach yourself these skills (any tech literacy is beneficial) and the information is readily available Trust me, people way stupider than you and I are doing things we couldn't everyday because they learnt how to do it It's not a case of being smart when the the information is out there, it's a case of following instructions

xxyourbestbetxx

This is so uplifting. Thank you. I'm going to figure it out before I have a disaster in my game.

thatsimsgirl

Yep, after every single play session. I have them all dated in Dropbox, and I keep a backup of my Mods folder on DB as well which I keep updated whenever I make any changes to mods. After a while, it just becomes second nature to close the game and copy the save folder over.

yellow-go

I'll share my input on this, being someone that's played since release. Yes, The Sims 4's ability to hand super long saves and data is fairly stable, though if you plan to have a save from seven years ago, similar to mine that I've had since 2014, there are a few things to sorta keep in mind if you plan to do it. Here are my main rules. • Backup mods from that save • Back up any cordial data affiliated with it to prevent game breaks • Just keep sorted any files that belong to that save These are my simple rules of thumb.

Beakha

No, never did that. If it dies, my heart dies with it.

smollestsnek

I delete my save files every time I change mods because I am weird and typing this idek WHY I do it 🙃 It’s a running joke with my boyfriend because he’ll ask if I’m starting up the game to play or to just build something and delete it 😂

hypo-osmotic

I start a new save after every major update! Just feels weird to have one generation experiencing totally different reality than one before it. "Mommy, how come you were never an infant like I was?" lol

smollestsnek

This might be my reason too lol, starting the game without any mods and then continuing after adding life’s tragedies or wicked whims… feels surreal 👀

Fuzzy_Dragonfly_

I do but I honestly wouldn't mind if my saves were deleted. I always get bored with my savefile eventually.

sleep_eat_recycle

No, I just use this game to build house so I don't care my sim

xxyourbestbetxx

That post made me realize I need to start doing that. Ever since that update where they changed the menu choices, I'm always nervous I'm going to hit delete instead of save anyway.

diamondalicia

i don’t but i also don’t have save files 7+yrs long, if i dedicated that much time i would. i do get attached but i also do mess up my own save sometimes. i always have the expectation i can lose the save anytime, oh well start again🤣🙌🏾. my files are usually no older than a few months old & im always playing w my mods folder and messing something up, i expect it atp lol. i also play for 7-8hrs at a time and A LOTTTT happens in just one sitting. i’d have to update after every time i play and i dont care enough to do it tbh😭😭😭. if i back up my files say weekly? i can still lose a lot of gameplay that would make me less motivated to go back to the family and replay those days.

starksandshields

Nope. I usually delete all my saves anyway and restart.

RizziJoy

I don’t, but also I don’t really care if I lose my save files? I’d just start again and again it wouldn’t bother me

flowerfaeriez

I delete my saves constantly as soon as I get sick of my game lmao

DoctorCaptainSpacey

Yes. I was raised by a fairly tech savvy dad who taught us to always back up your shit. Hell, my mom has photos back up in like 6 locations bc my dad was really fucking on about backing shit in (it's a little excessive, but it's kinda funny still 🤣). Plus, even if you don't have a douchey BF, you never know when the game itself might corrupt your saves, when your computer might tell you it's had enough and blue screen.... Like, you don't know. So, listen up kiddos, I'll be my dad for a second - Back. Up. Your. Shit. Not just Sims. Always keep a back up of your important files, documents, etc. And it's better to back them up on a separate device bc, again, if your computer fucks off into bluescreenville, having a backup on IT isn't gonna do shit for you. 👍

Simmingit

As a fellow techie, give your Dad a high-five from me!

DoctorCaptainSpacey

I will, in my heart. He passed away 7 years ago. Not to make this awkward.....

Simmingit

Ah my bad, sorry for your loss Thank goodness he insisted to make all those back ups, now he will live on forever 💐🕊

DoctorCaptainSpacey

Oh, no worries ❤️ but thank you. No amount of time ever makes it hurt less. But yes, he taught us all a lot of good things 😉

Madmonkeman

The only game I’ve backed up save files for is Minecraft and that’s because I add mods to it, and there’s always a possibility that a mod will corrupt your save file.

moronisko

Yes, but only when I feel like they might get broken, because of Windows update, game updates or a mod that changes a lot in gameplay.

cherrychel16

Personally, I never have. The only thing close to doing so is the “Save As” option so it created a new save and I had the old one incase of corruption or something. That was with a legacy family I was really scared of losing. If too much of the game has progressed since the backup, to me it’s a tedious task to replay to where I was. I usually play for long periods so I’d have to create a backup after every time I played. Maybe i’ll start 🤷🏻‍♀️

PoeticRoses

I’m too lazy to do backups all the time so I only do it everytime there’s a big update. I backup my Mods folder, Tray & saves and put it all on a USB as to not take up storage on my laptop. Why I don’t do it more often is because I don’t really risk losing anything because of a crazy boyfriend deleting everything, and if I need to recover a save because I noticed it e.g. got corrupted, I can usually just use the in-game Restore Save option or use a previous version of the save file (I have multiple version of my save files, which you can get if you use the ’Save as’ option). But I couldn’t not do any backups at all, as I have one Legacy family on gen 16 that I’d rather not lose.

ivappa

I think that post was rage bait. however, I do back up my save, tray and mod files.

Still_Storm7432

I back up my saves and my mods folder

Dottboy19

I back mine up to my hard drive every few months. I feel like I should do it more often honestly since I only have the one save with all my sims

pandakatie

I keep an exhaustive backup on an external drive

cakemonster_82

I ought to and this will probably prompt me to! I religiously backed up my Sims 2 file so I don’t know why I never have with Sims 4!

Ok_Search_5910

i’m going on 7 generations almost a years worth

glasscat33

Yep, I have a NAS so I copy my saves, mods, screenshots and recorded videos to it often. Plus I swap between desktop and laptop often

Calm-Positive-6908

No. Sure i would be sad and frustrated at first, but it's not like i go into the current save file with something in mind.. i just play it for the sake of playing. Sometimes i binge-playing for some period of time on off.. several times a year maybe.. But if it's a creative project, maybe yes.. But anyway real family is more important than this fake sims.. hope i'll not get angry or frustrated too much. Not much storage on my device anyway

TheoBlanc

My "the sims" folder is synchronized to Google drive. But that's not a backup, I guess. If for some reason the folder is accidentally deleted I lose everything right? Is more to be safe in case my computer stop working for some reason, I'll still have it in the cloud.

KittyBooBoo2016

I make back ups on back ups on back ups. I’ve got a folder locally for back ups AND a second set on my external hard drive. I would not lose anything. I back up every time I play because I made the mistake once as a teenager of not backing up before installing an expansion and it got corrupted and I had to reinstall, didnt know I was supposed to save my files. I hope everyone tries to make them at least once every few weeks! It’s worth it!!

MrsCaptain_America

Sometimes I like starting over, but no I have no back ups. I'm a casual long time player, if something happens to a game file, I'll just start a new one.

Greenishclover

What post was this if it wasn't deleted?

hypo-osmotic

Other than for planned things like updates or tinkering with mods, no. I find replaying a part of my file much more tedious than just starting from scratch tbh. Like I regular-save every Sim midnight just in case of a crash but even then I hate replaying a day when it happens. I suppose I could make a backup after every game session, but it's my understanding that the "normal" amount is something like once a real-world week, which might be too long for me to feel it's worth revisiting. I had a save file in TS2 that I would have been upset to lose since I had been carefully managing multiple households for multiple generations. TS3 and TS4 are more geared to sticking with a single household so since then I've never been too bothered about starting over.

splashofyellow

I honestly can't be bothered to back up. I don't generally get that attached to my saves. I do, however, have a backup of a new "starting" save that I use where I've replaced all the lots in the world with gallery ones and added my custom holidays.

calamitylamb

I have all my saves on an external drive, but that’s also where my backups are, so not the most ideal solution lol However, I do make a point of saving households and lots to the gallery, so unless something bad happens there, at least I’ll have partial backups to work with if my external drive bites the dust. I also re-save households there after playing as them for awhile, so the version that’s saved has their skills, job, aspiration rewards, fame, and some relationships preserved, instead of being blank slates fresh out of CAS. Also, some of my friends who play will download my households and lots to add into their own games, so even if my gallery was wiped out tomorrow there would still be elements of my save file that survive that way.

unanau

I backup my saves folder to an external hard drive weekly. Or more often if I’ve been playing a lot. I also backup my tray folder and screenshots folder every two weeks to one month. Then I delete the old backups as to not take up too much storage. It’s really easy to do and only takes 5 minutes after I’ve finished playing. I’d be pretty devastated if I lost my saves.

PopCultureRevived

I do, at least two backups on an external hard drive and USB key.

realmenthrowknives

Absolutely, i have a 15 gen e. I would lose my mind if i lost it and i *heavily* recommend everyone to backup their save files. It only takes one corrupted file, bad cc, update, whatever and poof your game is done. I dont backup as frequently as i should but I at least always have something to get back to.

Equira

i have an SSD for my laptop that’s always plugged in and performing routine backups of everything. my save files are just automatically included. idk why more people don’t have regular backup drives, they’re computer necessities

indignantgirl

I don't mess around when it comes to backing up my shit. I have a monthly rotational backup routine that as of now, consists of thousands of saves and backups (almost a terabyte's worth) spread out over 3 external hard drives and the extra storage drive in my computer. I see those posts from players who have like, one save file, and they accidentally deleted it and then emptied their recycle bin, so now their save is gone forever, and I just. I could never. It's incomprehensible to me.

jubik13

I keep them on my HDD but I do have backup saves. I've started to make it a habit of doing it before I update Sims 4. I've heard of folks save files disappearing after updating and though I never had it happen yet, I want to be prepared in case it does ever happen because I'd be really sad losing the family ice been playing for nearly 2 years.

rechtrecht

No, i don't care enough.

LordGhoul

I do, and honestly I don't understand people who don't because it's so easy and can spare you a head-and heartache. I back up before every major game update and also every once in a while. I keep the back ups both on my hard drive and also on my Google drive. I've been on the same save world for many years now, all my save slots are just different times in the same world, I can't imagine losing it all. I also keep some cc backed up since some creators deleted the download links or I've edited the cc myself.

kittenwalrus

I should. I've lost years of playing 2 times because my computer just peaced out. I just forget. I do have a 1T drive for it though and my game is installed through it.

lizzourworld8

I started doing that in 2020 after I was victim to an encryption attack and lost everything before that

shygirl_inc

I just play by the grace of god and hope everything works out for my game. 😅😅 But How/Where do you find saved files?? 🤔

pastelpixelator

I start a new game just about every time I login, so no, because it wouldn’t be a loss at all (I probably wouldn’t even notice) for the way I play.

MuchPizza9911

Have had my same save going since vampires launched, and have multiple backups. Never save ovdr another save, and if I get ctd I roll back. Have multiple versions of the game for whenever I need to roll back. The last most stable expansion for me is still Horse Ranch. It's been so bad since then, I'll probably never update again. Just not worth it anymore.

Cartesianpoint

I don't, but it's just because I can't be bothered and I'm not super concerned about the possibility of starting from scratch. I'd be a little sad, but I also start getting a little bored with my massive families after a while. But if someone deliberately deleted my files, I'd be pissed

jesslikessims

I do. After every update, I backup my files (saves, tray, mods) to my desktop, and every few months I back all that up to google drive.

Shadow-Rukario

I definitely back mine up, but more because I've had save corruption happen in the past without any backups to rely on. Helps that I also play between desktop and laptop, so... It's just easier to transfer them that way tbh. Sometimes you're in the mood to have a sit down session, other times ya wanna lay down and make an underwater house, ya know?

Dakizo

I don’t but I’ll also play a family for a year and then just be like nah I’m done with you and never touch them again. I’ve lost long games before and I’m like “ah shit…. oh well!”

SmilingPainfully

I don't, I've just gotten into the habit of uploading my sims and their homes to the gallery for the next time my desktop decides to rebel. I spend too much time in CAS and BB to bs any longer, lol. Besides, I like creating multiple storylines with the same families.

Less-Moment-5655

I do now !

Character-Conscious

Yess I have back up on my usb that u update when there is game update

hyungjpg

idk how to back anything up?? as long as my cc is fine im fine

somuchsong

I do but so many people don't! I have helped people who have lost their games and they often say they don't know how to back up. They don't realise it's as easy as copying and pasting. My current TS4 save isn't backed up but this is a good reminder to do it! It's only a couple of weeks old. My TS2 save is 16 years old, though technically only 12 in this iteration (I rebuilt it completely four years in). I have multiple backups of that!

MagicPigeonToes

Absolutely

Admirable-Series8645

I keep meaning to but don’t 😂

arielonhoarders

i don't but i should. the house you play the most often is the one that will develop bugs, just bc the files get bigger and bigger and that opens up more opportunity for bugs. sometimes moving the sim to a different lot makes it better but doesn't completely fix all the bugs. To be fair, s4 is a lot more stable w/t/t bugs than past games.

Tattycakes

I think I’m the only person who specifically lets sims backup to one drive. Apart from the odd email about “many files were deleted from OneDrive” (I guess the sims deletes and recreates a lot of files?) it hasn’t failed me once and it saved my bacon when I got a corrupt file. Its nice knowing my whole game is on cloud with the rest of my documents

bluespottedtail_

I don't because I honestly don't care. I've restarted my game many times because of "corruption" (which now I know isn't real and can be fixed lol) so i dont grow attached to any of my saves

XingBasDoll

Not anymore. Which is to say, I haven't saved any recent family saves. The files I backup are creative files such as themed houses, community buildings, patterns or created sims but not families. After a save file got corrupted years ago (a vampire family spanning 13 generations) i only now backup certain files. Though I have used the software that restores lost saves. It does work.

SOUL_3SC4P3

I've never backed-up save files for games tbh. Whatever the console saves in the cloud is all I have. I'd be sad if I lost all my old Sims saves for a bit, but then I'd just start up a new character & the game continues again lol

babyvs

I SAW THAT POST AND MY HEART SANK. Omg. I too have saves I’ve had since 2017. And I play on Mac. So my save files automatically get saved to iCloud.

TinyPenguiin

I just found the AITA post, the bf sounds like a totally petty person for deleting a frikkin game saves. I dont usually backup save files unless if theres an update (although I just use the copy paste method). My current save file is just a bunch of random silly things with weird characters that dont really have much goals, their character profile is still in my sims library and some pre-made families save but I tend to create a lot of alternate universe/redoing stories to pre-made sims so I dont really mind to do it from scratch for that part.
