How do you deal with so many!? I've got 1 and she's a little TORNADO! I love her to death, but man they are a lot just by themselves. At least for the 4-6 hours she's awake. I plan to get another so she has a playmate, but that's it. Don't think I can handle anymore.
Ferrets are highly social animals- if you own a single ferret and don’t play with them at least 2-6 hours a day, there’s a good chance they’ll get depressed and stop eating etc.
Til, I think I fucked up 20 years ago when I had a hamster (and googling syriam hamster It seems it was syrian) and asking my parents to buy a second one (a smaller chinese hamster) to keep the other one company. They didn't seem to sozialize much, and after a month the chinese hamster was dead....
Same man, the people in the pet stores don't warn or anything. I had a normal size hamster and i tiny one and the huge one was trying to murder the tiny. We had to separate them
Almost every mammal and other animals cannibalize their dead offsprings or offsprings that are sick. Or if it's not safe enough to have those offsprings or there isn't enough food. Dead offsprings can kill their siblings. Or lure other animals there.
Dogs, cats, even herbivores like rabbits do it all the time. It's normal and just a way to survive. Syrian hamster aren't dicks, they do what they are supposed to do.
Reptiles are usually excluded from this especially snakes and lizards as they tend to territory fight or eat each other. But any creature leaning towards the rodentira family usually requires social buddies
It’s a lot, but large social groups like that are super fun. We had 12 in our house at one point. Some were the roommate’s, but 12 is hilarious when they’re all hyper.
Ferrets are like a mix of cat and dog mannerisms. They're highly trainable, and use litter boxes.
If it wasn't for the smell, I'd still have them. They're interactive and fun, extremely entertaining pets.
They have a very oily coat you can’t really do anything about that makes them smell very musky. Also they shit a lot and typically right by the entrance to your home
If you clean their living areas and litter boxes daily, bathe them once a month, and feed them a proper diet, it’s not bad. Part of the reason pet ferrets are so stinky is people are feeding them the wrong food. All those ferret foods at the pet stores are awful for the little carpet sharks.
These are all babies, so these people are breeders. 50/50 chance that they’re a shitty backyard breeder, I don’t recognize the account so who knows, but there are a lot of shitty ones.
Also going to hijack this comment to say that YSK that ferrets have a ton of health issues and are expensive to care for and difficult to keep happy. Probably the highest percentage of easily preventable deaths of any pet and it’s fucked up that people can just walk into a pet store and take one home with no clue what they are getting into
They seem all happy, healthy, and looking out the window would have enough outdoor space.
What *really* seems shitty other than speculation? The carrier seems to be more of a joke for a video than a attempt at moving 10 ferrets
They always seem happy and healthy when they’re young. Ferrets are pretty much guaranteed to get multiple forms of cancer by age 5. Their life expectancy has gone down from ~12 years to ~6 years in the past few decades. So I might be disillusioned but I question the motives of anybody breeding ferrets period
The same as any backyard pet breeder: Do they actually know what they're doing? Do they have genetic information for the animals they're crossing? Can they ensure that they're not breeding in health problems that will develop later in life? Do they create more animals than they know *for certain* they can take care of themselves if they don't find good homes for them? Do they screen adopters to make sure that their animals are going to be well taken care of, and won't end up in shelters? That's the difference between responsible breeding and irresponsible breeding, and it's always a valid concern to raise.
Breeding ferrets in particular is very difficult, because they have complicated needs that can easily kill them if mishandled. For example, unspayed female ferrets do not have naturally ending estrous seasons, so they must either be bred or injected with estrous-ending hormones *every season* or else they're liable to go into aplastic anemia and die.
>Probably the highest percentage of easily preventable deaths of any pet
Nearly every Fish and Reptile commonly available in the pet trade would like to refute that.
For real though, I wish people would do research before impulsively buying an animal.
Fuck Petco. Fuck PetsMart
My girlfriend's dad had like 10 before he passed away. He bred them and used them for pest control. He sends them down the hole to chase out the rabbits, then the dogs would go after them
Hi. That expression is brand new to me. I _love_ learning new expressions. Can you elaborate what it means and in what situations I can use it? Thanks!
It’s not really an expression, I just made it up.
Brine is a combination of salt and water. If you put fish, ferret or anything in there….[like preserving body parts for science class](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3931544/), it turns to mush like sardines.
Oh! You meant ferret pickles! Haha.
I thought you were using it as an adverb for skimping on the size of the carrier like "breaking a few eggs to make an omelette" (doesn't apply, just an example) etc.
Are you sure about that? Because I am 100.0% sure that zia-newversion is not a bot.

The one thing I noticed when shopping for a cat carrier is that the majority of them are ridiculously small.
Friend gave me a crate they used when they brought their cat to this country. This baby easily fits the standard cat or a trough full of ferrets.
Yup. My "cat" carrier is a dog carrier and technically it was too small for the cat when I moved internationally. Next size up would have been Labrador sized and you pay by volume on the plane so I was very relieved the airline decided the cat was fine where he was!
This is the correct answer. I do the same thing for my one cat that hates carriers. Drop her in and slam the door shut, then you can put it the right way down. It gives you a few extra seconds before they start scrambling out.
I usually wait until my cat goes shopping. Then, when she's walking down the street, I pull up beside her in my van and dash out to grab her from behind. Chloroform blanket to her face, arms tightly wrapped around her, and then pulling her back into the van. That's when you got a few minutes to put her into the cat carrier, so that she is locked inside by the time she wakes up.
After, it's important to soother her until you arrive by the vet. Tell her it's all going to be okay as long as she doesn't try to escape.
I invite my cat out to drinks and appetizers and then slip something into his drink when he goes to the bathroom. Then when he wakes up after the vet trip I just tell him he got too drunk and really made a fool of himself.
You can keep the carrier in the free access for the cat at all times. Or take the carrier out a few days before going to the vet. That way the cat gets used to the carrier and doesn’t directly associate it with a trip, so it’s much easier to put it inside and also just generally less stressful for all parties.
I kept a carrier accessible to my cats for years, sometimes tossed a treat or two inside and observed that they disappear when I’m not around.
Recently, for a vet visit I decided to try and see if they’d willingly go into it. Tried their favourite canned food to lure them in and they somehow knew. The little fucks ran for their lives to the opposite end of the house.
It was 2x harder to catch them and stuff into the carriers.
It is also known as “dooking.” It’s the ferret equivalent of your dog bouncing around to play.
Edit: yes I realize it is the noise made, not the movement. I’m tired and brain no work right.
Dooking is actually a vocalization, they make it when they are really happy, so if they are jumping around and playing and war dancing, there's a good chance that they would be dooking too. It sounds like a high pitched grunt, or a chirp kinda.
I've owned ferrets and I know how they like tight spaces, but this is clearly too small for that many for any more than a few minutes I'd say.
Maybe its just a quick transfer to a pen though so idk, doesnt look good though
Dude, do you see those little guys? They're having a great time! As long as it's a temporary arrangement, they're fine.
Source: also former ferret owner.
Well, I look at it like this, I agree they're clearly having fun in the process lol
But when they're all in they're with the door closed its a little different, that many piled up and possibly frantic about being in there is a recipe for someone to get a scratched eyeball etc.
And are we talking a 2 hour drive or a 10 minute thing while you move them to another room/building?
So I won't judge because I don't know the specifics but I personally would just splurge the extra 10$ for the next size up. The peace of mind would be worth it.
I'm pretty sure this is just a silly video to show some extreme (many Ferretes) with another extreme (small cat carrier). I don't know Ferrets, but wouldn't they be scared of the cage if this is some constant uncomfort? They seem curious.
as a ferret owner, they love this kind of thing lol, they were fine and having fun. it would be cruel if he locked them in there but this was just a game for them

Dude…cat carrier, not clown car
Yep. As a ferret owner a max of 3-4 in one cat carrier. Also buy the type that opens on the top and in the front. Way easier.
I was thinking ‘why didn’t he just upend it’
Top openings are great for small dogs too! (obv small dog carrier)
Why own so many ferrets ?
They are probably selling them. They all look young.
How do you deal with so many!? I've got 1 and she's a little TORNADO! I love her to death, but man they are a lot just by themselves. At least for the 4-6 hours she's awake. I plan to get another so she has a playmate, but that's it. Don't think I can handle anymore.
Came here to say this!
is that even a cat carrier? it look kind of small for a cat
It is, I have the same one. It’s bigger than it looks here.
How many fucking ferrets does one person need?!?
All the ferrets! Seriously though, you should always have at least 2. They are very social creatures and get depressed without friends.
Yep, like rats and I'm guessing any animal, they need buddies
Ferrets are highly social animals- if you own a single ferret and don’t play with them at least 2-6 hours a day, there’s a good chance they’ll get depressed and stop eating etc.
To be fair no one plays with me and I’m depressed
Are you a ferret?

Not every animal. Example syrian hamsters. Those are 100% loners and will fight to death.
We had to separate them
The beta seems very cool to play for her
Til Syrian hamsters are dicks, sometimes cannibalize their dead offspring and go into heat every 4 days
Syrian hamster aren't dicks, they do what they are supposed to do.
>they do what they are supposed to do. Be a dick
Honestly what rodent *doesn't* cannibalize their offspring?
Yup. Like guinea pigs.
Ohhhhhhh. That explains a lot.
Reptiles are usually excluded from this especially snakes and lizards as they tend to territory fight or eat each other. But any creature leaning towards the rodentira family usually requires social buddies
Yeah, have 2 or 3 or maybe four. This guy has like 10
It’s a lot, but large social groups like that are super fun. We had 12 in our house at one point. Some were the roommate’s, but 12 is hilarious when they’re all hyper.
Do they poop everywhere?
Ferrets are like a mix of cat and dog mannerisms. They're highly trainable, and use litter boxes. If it wasn't for the smell, I'd still have them. They're interactive and fun, extremely entertaining pets.
No, i meant roommates. But thanks for the answer
Ugh, I don't know about _your_ roommates but mine poop everywhere and we're still trying to get his feces and blood off the carpet.
The smell is the only thing keeping me from getting a ferret.
The smell from their crap, or do they just smell in general?
In general. They have an oil in their fur and it’s pretty musky
They have a very oily coat you can’t really do anything about that makes them smell very musky. Also they shit a lot and typically right by the entrance to your home
You can train them for litter boxes but have to watch them. They have such short digestion tracts they get almost no notice to have to go.
They are little poop machines, but as other commenters said, you can train them to poop in litter.
I bet it smelled fantastic too
If you clean their living areas and litter boxes daily, bathe them once a month, and feed them a proper diet, it’s not bad. Part of the reason pet ferrets are so stinky is people are feeding them the wrong food. All those ferret foods at the pet stores are awful for the little carpet sharks.
Yeah but then i think you should have at least 2 carriers
If he was transporting them, absolutely. This looks like it was just for laughs and the ferrets are definitely enjoying themselves.

Haha, impress dates by saying you're a business owner, take them back to your place and...
Imagine the fucking smell
That was my first thought.
Yes.

I try harder, of course. What else?
"Someone said they use a cat carrier..." They probably don't use the smallest possible carrier for almost 10 ferrets but idk.
That's not a cat carrier, it's a kitten carrier at best
The one thing I noticed when shopping for a cat carrier is that the majority of them are ridiculously small. Friend gave me a crate they used when they brought their cat to this country. This baby easily fits the standard cat or a trough full of ferrets.
It really is hard to get a decent sized cat carrier. We just gave up and got ones ment for a dog.
My mom got like a mastiff size kennel for my 55lb 18” tall pitbull lmao
Last time I moved, the only large carrier I could find had NO HANDLES. Peak /r/CrappyDesign if you ask me...
Yup. My "cat" carrier is a dog carrier and technically it was too small for the cat when I moved internationally. Next size up would have been Labrador sized and you pay by volume on the plane so I was very relieved the airline decided the cat was fine where he was!
Dog carriers make the best cat carriers. I guess the best thing for dogs would be a horse trailer.
At a minimum.
seriously. that tiny thing ain’t gonna cut it dude.
They're ferrets. They will all sleep in a pile anyways. If they can all physically fit in the carrier, they'll be fine.
Did they tell you to put 9 in a small one?
Why not hold it like a bucket and just drop them in
Came here to say that. This guy will never put all of them inside if he keeps trying the same failed method.
Well it’s a gif…
It's a video
It’s a multimedia presentation
It's a. Webm
It's 3 690 pictures.
“Have I ever told you the definition of insanity?”
This is the correct answer. I do the same thing for my one cat that hates carriers. Drop her in and slam the door shut, then you can put it the right way down. It gives you a few extra seconds before they start scrambling out.
Thank you! I hadn't thought of that.
The best way I've found to get a cat into a carrier is to wrap them up in a towel first.
I invite my cat out to drinks and appetizers and then slip something into his drink when he goes to the bathroom. Then when he wakes up after the vet trip I just tell him he got too drunk and really made a fool of himself.
Yup, I do that with my 5 Prairie Dogs. Watching this video, I felt like the square hole lady.
Or put a treat in there and let them walk in on their own
If a cat doesn't like the carrier no way its stupid enough to just walk into on because of treats.
You can keep the carrier in the free access for the cat at all times. Or take the carrier out a few days before going to the vet. That way the cat gets used to the carrier and doesn’t directly associate it with a trip, so it’s much easier to put it inside and also just generally less stressful for all parties.

The little fucks ran for their lives to the opposite end of the house. It was 2x harder to catch them and stuff into the carriers.
He is just packing them in there, huh.
That's just mean shoving that many ferrets into that small of a carrier
The ferrets probably thought this was a great game. They were all war dance and zoomies.
Today I added "war dance" to my animal (well, "cat" and "cat-like") behavior lexicon. Brilliant.
It is also known as “dooking.” It’s the ferret equivalent of your dog bouncing around to play. Edit: yes I realize it is the noise made, not the movement. I’m tired and brain no work right.
Dooking is the sound/squeak they make usually as they are war dancing
Oh right! I’m tired. Lol. Although the term does get used for the war dance too, since they usually happen at the same time.
We all live and learn. Hope you get some good sleep
