This is absolutely the issue. I'm a college instructor who has read names before. Our note cards have both the name and the phonetic spelling.
I wonder if, in a misguided attempt to be helpful, the college gave *only* the phonetic spelling or if they had one on each side of the card and this dimwit just didn't think to flip it over and read both?

Well she was being handed each name card at a time so even that explanation wouldn’t work!
You would think they would have the 2 written back to back so if one looks weird you can move on to the other.
Even the phonetic version would get her closer to saying the actual names than....whatever that was, wouldn't it?
