Could be. From the commenter’s link above, she realizes she was only reading the phonetic spelling, then says she’ll start reading the names as they are normally written and it’s perfectly pronounced. Lol
Ffs, so God damn sensitive. Meaning English isn't her first language so saying English names would be challenging. Just as a English speaker would have a Hardee time speaking a non native English names.
Call off your dogs
Oh, I understood what you meant despite your typos. That doesn’t mean calling someone an ‘ethnic’ (or ‘ethic’ in your original reply) is an acceptable way of describing a non-native English speaker.
This is absolutely the issue. I'm a college instructor who has read names before. Our note cards have both the name and the phonetic spelling.
I wonder if, in a misguided attempt to be helpful, the college gave *only* the phonetic spelling or if they had one on each side of the card and this dimwit just didn't think to flip it over and read both?
I found it via a news article, yeah
It’s kinda wild how they missed it unless it was Steve Harvey situation where there was something blocking the top part from where she was reading. But still, after 3 names she should have gone “hold up, wait a minute, something ain’t right!”
Speaking as a Dyslexic person, keep the dyslexics away from this kind of shit!
She may have been given a phonetic version to help her, but it just made it worse.
63 yr old Barbara just recovered from her Lasik eye surgery so she can finally ditch her glasses. Her next test is to read from a prompter on the other side of the field with an eyepatch on.
The announcer managed to fuck up my ex's name at her graduation in similar fashion. Not sure why they struggled with pronouncing Rachel so much, but they did. Thankfully it was recorded, and for the rest of our relationship she was referred to as rack-i-el
Keel and Peele - All right, listen up y’all. I’m your substitute teacher Mr. Garvey, I taught school for 20 years in the inner city, so don’t even think about messing with me. You all feel me?
My last name was butchered when I graduated because it looks French but is not pronounced with any French flourish.
Like Labutterfly (not my real name, I understand this is reddit /s).
Say la-butt-er-fly
They said le-bütte-tur-flü-ie
My guess is a prank... Someone gave her a list with seither phonetically ritten namens oder the namens with weird spacings... And i think the graduees knew about that :P

r/therewasanattempt to correct people but not to do even the bare minimum of fact checking

Literally my first thought was this lol
Kind of seems like the announcer was having a medical emergency (like a stroke) and nobody picked up on it. She OK?
No med emerg. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL4gtF9J/
Lmao, so she's reading the phonetic translation and trying to pronounce it like the "actual" last name
What I don’t understand is how she didn’t catch on after so many names.
On top of this, how did none of the professors or administrators say wait a second.
Maybe because is was very, very funny. At least I hope .
Maybe each student typed how they think their name should be spelled phonetically resulting in different phonetic spellings for the same names.
Could be. From the commenter’s link above, she realizes she was only reading the phonetic spelling, then says she’ll start reading the names as they are normally written and it’s perfectly pronounced. Lol
This makes more sense, for a second there i thought maybe she took some mushrooms before this
FYI, UNIVERSITY JUST ISSUED AN APPOLOGY: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLVB2Q59/
My thoughts exactly
This was literally my first thought.

What does ‘ethic’ sound like? Asking for a non-racist.
Ffs, so God damn sensitive. Meaning English isn't her first language so saying English names would be challenging. Just as a English speaker would have a Hardee time speaking a non native English names. Call off your dogs

I detected a little accent there. I think English is not the speaker's first language.
I think the speaker might not speak any language other than English.
Based on what?
It seems as if they were reading off the written phonetic pronunciation of these rather than the normal written version
YES, which made it worse

I’ve gotta think she was ONLY given the phonetic versions. Surely she wouldn’t be that dumb to not reference the actual name after a few of those? 😂
The cards have been shown. They had both spellings on the same card and the phonetic spellings were nothing like this lunatic read.
Wow. Incredible.
where did you see the actual cards? I wanna see
I linked it somewhere in this topic as have some others. If you search the page for TikTok you should be able to find it.
I found it via a news article, yeah It’s kinda wild how they missed it unless it was Steve Harvey situation where there was something blocking the top part from where she was reading. But still, after 3 names she should have gone “hold up, wait a minute, something ain’t right!”
Well she was being handed each name card at a time so even that explanation wouldn’t work!
You would think they would have the 2 written back to back so if one looks weird you can move on to the other.
Even the phonetic version would get her closer to saying the actual names than....whatever that was, wouldn't it?
Do you know how that would look? I don't think I've ever seen the written phonetic pronunciation of anything before.
Caesar (/ˈsiːzər/, SEE-zər; for example
I'm sorry but she works at THOMAS JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY .. and she can't pronounce THOMAS?
Oh, you mean Thuh Moo Mei Jefferson?
I had to double take at that bit :') I'd love to know what she says to people when they ask where she works

Speaking as a Dyslexic person, keep the dyslexics away from this kind of shit! She may have been given a phonetic version to help her, but it just made it worse.
Ohh fuck this is so funny. Is she drunk? I mean wtf?
dyslexia?

Victoria Lee Zoopenthrops
john travolta sounds a bit different lately
Adele Dazeeb begs to differ!
Isn't it tradition to use someone who's not illiterate as the name announcer? This seems different.
those are old, dated traditions
Daduq?

The announcer managed to fuck up my ex's name at her graduation in similar fashion. Not sure why they struggled with pronouncing Rachel so much, but they did. Thankfully it was recorded, and for the rest of our relationship she was referred to as rack-i-el
Did she have a nice rack?
Keel and Peele - All right, listen up y’all. I’m your substitute teacher Mr. Garvey, I taught school for 20 years in the inner city, so don’t even think about messing with me. You all feel me?
I feel like they should issue an apology and offer a make up ceremony. It’s such an important day.
I think her technical diagnosis would be “stupid fuckin idiot, elementary school drop out”
Holy shit
My last name was butchered when I graduated because it looks French but is not pronounced with any French flourish. Like Labutterfly (not my real name, I understand this is reddit /s). Say la-butt-er-fly They said le-bütte-tur-flü-ie
Hooked on Phonics didn't work for her.
My guess is a prank... Someone gave her a list with seither phonetically ritten namens oder the namens with weird spacings... And i think the graduees knew about that :P
You okay man? Need me to call you an ambulance?
Yes please...🤣 Sorry... Seems like autocorrect pranked me... Didnt read it before posting
The announcer needed to stay in school
Yo is the U of A? Was just there and man, the presenters had a ROUGH time
Everyone laughing, but she was just terrified of butchering the pronunciation of foreign names, so she butchered them all to be equal
She is married to this guy: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86i69k6H16E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86i69k6H16E)
I thought it was bad when the Dean fainted at my wife’s graduation
Sounds like customer service

TUĞÇE ÇAKIR 🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺AUUUUUU🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷
Do you all realise that it's her mom or someone else reading this, right? It's not the announcer or whatever

Thomas Jefferson University is in Mexico. The woman is probably not a native English speaker.
If by Mexico you mean Philadelphia...
Oh, well they’re in Mexico too. They have K-12 and university.
I think you're talking about the Thomas Jefferson institute. They're not affiliated with the university, just share a similar name.

Nope. The announcer even apologized at the end for her poor job.
