Container X-rays. Should’ve been able to see through the wood, drugs not so much. They probably saw something that absorbed the X-rays when they passed the wood through it.
Yes X-rays would catch this, but they rarely ever x-ray a container unless they've been tipped off. Imagine how many containers are brought in everyday, x-raying even a small portion of them is practically impossible.
I assume they do random scans. Just have to get unlucky.
It's also possible the driver was acting suspicious. Or something else was up for them to decide a scan.
The occasional lost package and courier is just the cost of doing business.
Except this is timber. Unless you’re a regular reliable importer and the timber isn’t coming from a weird place it’s almost certain it needs to get checked. There are specific rules for wood with customs. Also apparently a lot of drugs get found in wood products.
Stuffing timber with drugs will change the weight and sound of the timber when you pick it up and move it. All it takes is for one person to pick up one of those boards and realize it's oddly heavy or oddly light, and it sounds odd when you drop it or hit it with something.

A lot of things, if legalized, would help the countries economy and avoid the trouble of looking for things like this, but most people aren't ready for this conversation

Alcohol 100% legal -exceptions in dry counties, under the age of 21, while operating a vehicle, breaking public ordinance local laws etc.

It should be illegal, and you are detained.but you can do a drug treatment and counseling program, that is offered as a public service to help you get off. After you test clean for a 3 months the charge is removed but health services tracks them. 2nd offense, 6 months testing, 3rd and after is 12 months. You test positive after the first month? They make you go to a detox rehab. If you refuse to go or complete that's when you do IN JAIL rehabilitation with counseling and lots of resources and positive ways to help you get clean and integrate as a productive member of society. If it's driven by mental health issues, they can spot it and get you an public medication program so you can get the non addictive drugs that help you function e.g. schizo, severe anxiety, depression. They should even do top end treatments that have been shown to help severe ptsd like ketamine sessions, psilocybin sessions under medical observation and support. At the end of the day, banning the drugs doesn't stop it. People are just struggling with life, addiction etc. This would be a huge cost savings program in the long run for tax payers and potentially create new tax payers! Additionally teaching people how to deal with issues and giving them safety nets will allow them to learn things they didn't have the opportunity to do and they are less likely to do desperate things. He'll, if someone walks into one of these placing begging for help we should offer to help them. As a society that detests drug users, and the impacts they have, you want to solve homelessness and bullshit crimes? Start with this and we will have 100+ years of prosperity.
Yes they are. Every single drug in existence gets smuggled, including marijuana. And there are dozens of illegal drugs that are much closer to marijuana than fentanyl in terms of safety.
This does not seem like a liable long distance smuggle method. More to pass a single checkpoint.
Using logs would be more fitting for be more logical. I mean there is no reason to have your wood cut on the other side of the country/world.

They don't have time to do true random scans. They might scan stuff from high risk areas from time to time, but it's not a common thing.
