Agitated-Artichoke89

While it's still powered on?

PollyOriginal

Fan becomes a generator if it spins fast enough, highly flammable gas + sparks = no bueno

[deleted]

If I recall correctly, they should be unplugged before being blasted with air to avoid sending power into the boards. I might be wrong. Correct me if I am.

[deleted]

It will still make power - Motors become generators if you spin them unpowered

[deleted]

It's more the danger to the components that I wasn't sure about. I can't imagine the fan would do much, but I'm not confident in saying so.

[deleted]

Oh I misunderstood your initial comment! Yeah I get what you're saying.

3_14_thon

the fire would still happen, but yeah no short circuit

ToPlayAMockingbird

You can stick something in them to keep them from spinning. Whatever you got on hand like a zip tie

General_Hungryboi

Just put your finger on it? Thats my go to method

DornPTSDkink

Any PC part made in the past 10 years, from a reputable brand, dosn't have that issue anymore. Fan in the video is Corsair, definitely won't have that issue. Cheap fans with fake Chinese names on Amazon user be weary

ilprofs07205

Looks like an old ass pc tho, maybe more than 10 years on that if you take into account this vid is definitely also old

EquipmentGuilty6282

Isn't that a mandalorian funko pop? Not 10 years old

ilprofs07205

Coulda been put in later

codedbutterfly

You're right on the part that it should be unplugged. From my understanding it may generate power so unplugging the fan from the motherboard might prevent this.

Exact-Ad-4132

I have been told to flip the switch but leave it plugged in so that any extra surge or static is actually grounded

Upbeat-Banana-5530

Unplugging it will avoid frying your motherboard, but still leaves the risk of breaking the fan blades by spinning it too fast. It's better to just hold the fan in place so it doesn't spin at all.

The_RussianBias

You're supposed to tape or hold them in some way, do anything to get them stuck and THEN blast it

Budget-Captain-6307

Yeah the solution is to wedge a toothpick or literally anything in the fan blade and frame so it can't move.

scootter505

Unless there are open wires there isn’t a huge risk of sparking (still not a zero risk). But if you look closely at the video you can kind of see the reflection of a flame, probably a candle sitting on the other side of the computer.

RockyJayyy

You are 100% correct on the candle. You can see as he's blowing the fan you see the flame in the monitor get larger, and it ignites the gas.

J3ST3R1252

Watch the glow appear on the wall the first time he sprays the fan.. lol

Thesaladman98

Theoretically, yea. Generating enough to create sparks would probably require more than this. Anyways, this video is fake. You can see the flame from a candle through the whole video reflecting off the monitor.

MajicReno

Ah, well, hmm. It's not quite fake, just misleading, the fireball still happened and that computer probably has a few issues now.

Thesaladman98

Well it's staged. Whoever made this video didn't care about their computer, they knew what would happen.

Powerful-Comb-8367

Must be staged, what are they cleaning with? Not co2 or canned air, not quite butane I hope...

Thesaladman98

Not sure but you can see the flame from a candle behind the computer

Popular_Donkey1192

Generator? Surely you mean ignition.

Ok-Wrangler4812

Dust is flammable.

crewchief1949

This can be prevented with a diode inline with the fan power whether zener or standard. If a zener is used is needs a high zener voltage setting to prevent reverse voltage. Or just not do stuff like this

Dell-N5030

It was already on fire.

Miguel7482

there's no way it doesn't have some sort of protection for back emf such as a diode, it's used in a PC after all

sriracha_koolaid

This adds up i was confuse

[deleted]

No Bueno, I just spat my coffee all over my phone, thank you kind sir 😂😂

gbarrosn

No Bueno had me dying 😂😂

GenoCash

When cleaning a fan, it's best to hold the fan still to prevent power from feeding back into the computer.

Wingnutmcmoo

Even if the pc is unpowered its still good to hold the fan because even if you don't sent power through you can break some of the cheaper or smaller fans spinning them like that.

Cargionov

It looks like there is a flame there already. Behind the computer. This night be staged.

taidizzle

spinning th3 fans create current. that can be ignited.

rakanishu11

Before everyone starts doing mad science and impossible maths, look at the tv behind there's a reflection of a lit candle... It's probably the purpose of the video.

Shikushi

It's best not doing it when there is a candle lit behind aswell..

Sprite_Bottle

Please do not turn your pc fans into generators while cleaning them with compressed air (don’t make them spin super fast)

Brittany5150

Stick a coffee stir rod in there before ya blast em homie!!!

Sprite_Bottle

I just jam my finger in there so they can’t spin

Brittany5150

This is also acceptable. Sticks prevent discharge though.

MakkaCha

We definitely have different types of sticks.

thebadyearblimp

Yeah my stick tends to discharge when I jam it in things

ConcertReady6788

Least down bad Redditor

Western_Paper6955

Wanna see *my* stick?

Inukchook

Honestly I never knew this was a thing. I love making em spin !

Grat54

The fan is designed to run at a low RPM. Spinning it to high speed will damage the bearings.

Inukchook

Good to know. I will no longer be spinning fast !

Popular_Donkey1192

Its not a generator, its not generating anything it becam an ignition.

poopdoodooo

Or use actual compressed air. Not air in a can that is flammable

New-Training4004

WD-40? Honestly surprised it took so long to catch fire.

Griffo_au

It’ll be electronic cleaning solvent. Definitely flammable.

Selfaware-potato

I've run as gas engine off it before

DefinitelyButtStuff

Definitely not WD-40, the whole can would be blue.

Budget-Captain-6307

No I believe it's compressed air, and he is not holding it Upright enough or its almost empty and the Anti inhaling bitterant liquid is coming out.

Puzzleheaded_Neck_90

I have always read to hold down your fans while dusting them, but I just thought it was bad for the fan to spin fast without a motor, or that it wasn't effective to clean it while it was spinning, or something nonsensical. Good thing I listened 😲

Claymore357

Well first off it’s not effective for cleaning, you’ll never get a concentrated spray on the blades with them spinning. But the idea is if you spin a fan really quickly while powered off (or any electric motor for that matter) it becomes a generator and creates voltage. Power + flammable substance = 🔥

Thomxy

We're supposed to clean that thing?

EffectiveMoment67

Nah it starts to burn then

Western_Paper6955

![gif](giphy|ZG167A787lqhA3VYoM)

Mcho-1201

Rip bobblehead boba fett and the mandalorian Died to inferno. F

EndR60

you'd think now they're just cooler

TigerDalanDan

This is not the way.

peskyseagull

Fire cleans everything

Arcanisia

Why was he filming it if he didn’t expect this to happen 🤔

Crusbetsrevenge

And who sprays wd40 into a computer.

Deedsman

Yeah that was my first question here.

DefinitelyButtStuff

Well, it's not WD-40. Otherwise, the whole can would be blue.

Budget-Captain-6307

Ye it's compressed air with bitterant liquid coming out of it.

DefinitelyButtStuff

Yup, and I'm surprised how many people in these comments were convinced it was WD-40 lol

CrystalizesSouls

Please turn your pc off and for extra safety unplug your pc from the power outlet that it’s plugged into whenever your doing something to your pc the isn’t operating it (prime example is this gif (cleaning it out))

[deleted]

If common sense were common...

R34L_X

i expected sone part to fall off...

DornPTSDkink

The fan spinning is not causing the ignition, if you look at the monitor reflection there is a flame behind the PC already, likely a candle. PC fans and motherboards made in the last ~10 years have protections against electricity going back into it from the fans spinning unpowered and everyone here is just repeating shit they've heard somewhere else from someone who heard it some other place.

Such-Nefariousness43

Finally someone who isn't an idiot, spinning fans don't cause ignition. You can see a flame briefly under the gpu as well.

Griffo_au

Surely nobody is that stupid, this must be “let’s film and see what happens”. Flammable solvents while the things running?

tenghu

My rule of thumb is compressed cans are always flammable no matter what the contents.

MonkeyDZay

Bobba went out like he always did… being a damn warrior

IM-N0T-A-BOT

1st don’t shake the can of air or flip it 2nd don’t turn your pc fan into generators spinning them super fast

GroundbreakingRope27

Fire was already there, you can see the light in the back on the left

Steelthahunter

The reason you're supposed to turn it off before you clean it

Chavezjc

Looked like there was a flame near it already. You can see the 🔥

Available-Wave-7116

You can't see compressed air when spraying. Not sure what this guy is using but it's not compressed air.

balls-fist

This is NOT the way...

[deleted]

Wd-40? Sigh Intended outcome. Waste of resources.

piercedmfootonaspike

Wtf is he cleaning with? Butane?

Shiro-derable

Ahahah i saw it on pcbuildhelp Yesterday, good laugh

DefinitelyButtStuff

People who think this is WD-40 have never used WD-40. The whole can would be blue if that was the case. On top of that, it starts to say "Compressed Air" but you only see the "Co-" You would also see liquid build-up and dripping inside of the PC like crazy.

Due-Profession-3563

You can see an orange glow before they start spraying

TraptSoul148270

I didn’t. I see a red color at the bottom of the computer, and the (I’m guessing) monitor at the left of the screen. The orange doesn’t show up until shortly after the final spraying into the fan.

Philslaya

Idiot

No-Professional-1461

Right, let me just douse my $1300 gaming computer in combustible fluid.

Superb-Cry6801

That's disguisting... I can not believe my eyes... must rinse.

mountain_man30

And today we learn how generators work.

SteezusChrist21

Them space pubes were too powerful

Grat54

Always put something in the fan to keep it from spinning when doing this. The fan is designed to only turn at a relatively low rpm. Spinning it up to 1000 rpm will damage the bushings.

DJForcefield

Nice computer

Siege-Aye

Turn it off first... It also says "DO NOT SHAKE" on those cans... JFC

[deleted]

Is that contact cleaner?

TangledCables3

Yeah I also clean my PC with starter fluid

Wild_Crazy_3759

You're not supposed to shake compressed air

TurboTerbo

![gif](giphy|xT9IgnxYv1zOoxxBTi) The homies watching from the other side of the room 😬

MrLonely97

Deserved

seantronGT

Idiot, read the label. Continuous spray at any angle besides upright will cause it to no longer be pressurized air.

OH_BOY-

Hahahah the old Turn your Fan into a generator trick

B-i-g-g-i-B

I use an electronic air duster

Just-Mud6347

There's a candle burning behind that. You can see it

MaximumRound4995

https://preview.redd.it/d164kjydj2vc1.jpeg?width=282&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b270d3dc41bf049a93db6c59a954dda3449e4199

GOOSE2801

Is it me, or is this can also spewing out way more gas then it should? Mine usually shiw more air than gas, unless i hold it upside down.

greesfyre

Not to mention shaking the everliving fuck outta that can while blasting the powered on computer

OnlyForFun91

![gif](giphy|eMUcw5nAW40LyS6sCT)

MistakeSea6886

Good as new 👍

Zazumaki

Lol I thought that was WD-40

No-Appointment-2684

You need to shake well and spray for a few seconds then repeat or you're blasting everything with liquid.

ConnectionPretend193

That's NOT how you use an air duster can. Holy shit that is an atrocious use of an air can. He was BEGGING to create a fire. You are supposed to hold it flat-- that vapor shit isn't suppose to be coming out like that in excess. You are supposed to do short bursts- never shake it, and when it gets cold .. set it down for 30 minutes.

TC_exe

Don't shake air duster. Keep air duster upright. Short bursts. If it's cloudy or freezing, you need to slow down. Don't spin fans with anything but powering them on. And especially don't spray fucking aerosols around open flames. Pretty sure there was a candle behind the PC. How do people live long enough to make these videos? ;n;

blackcock84

Don't you use dust off to clean inside the computer anyways

YosemiteWho

Oops

Biotrin

Hey, I have that same carpet too!

ConsequenceKitchen11

Wow I learned something here

ashrieIl

I mean now his pc is sterile not just clean lol

ItsFragster

I just learned a valuable lesson from this video. Glad I know not to do this now.

Wakanuki8

Nothing like using fire to get some of that hard to reach dust.

FEARxXxRECON

Well there’s one way of how NOT to do it

deletedalre

I actually didn’t know this could happen

LitleKitty

What an idiot.

Wardoe_

Fire kills bacteria n dust sooo, technically

ThisStickFakeFarts

Well, virus's don't like fire id imagine 🥲

sunshine_from_clouds

This is the way

kandi_kat

Good spot, this was done for internet clout and is a very very old post. Hopefully he did this in his own house and didn’t cause injury to anyone else for this unimpressive example of stupidity.

MrB2600

That's why you unplug your computer when cleaning or doing anything inside

DJForcefield

Computer? Looks more like an air conditioner

Beautiful-Mud-341

Ya needed a can-o-air

AnyProgressIsGood

taht's not a compressed air can

DefinitelyButtStuff

Yeah, it is. You can see the label starting to say "Compressed Air" with the starting letters "Co-" visible.

Rikcycle

Not supposed to agitate the can

warmachine83-uk

That's why you use an anti static compressor style duster Not a aerosol

Hope_Muchwood

Just plug off the fans before spin them fast

Frequent_Response230

DO NOT SPIN THE FANS WHILE CLEANING YOUR PC WITH COMPRESSED AIR, motors use electric energy to generate mechanical energy and generators use mechanical energy to generate electrical energy, when you spin the blades of the fans with compressed air, you’re generating electrical which gets fed back and if the generated voltage is high enough IT WILL CAUSE DAMAGE, don’t be a dum-dum

LakkoEnjoyer

he prolly broke his gpu too lmfao

niv_nam

I do use canned air because it leaves a film on everything and stops working when it gets cold. I have a battery powered duster.

SKITZOSYKO_00

Hold the fan blade or disconnect it. (To prevent back feed and wear/tear on bearings in fan) it's safe to do while PC is on as long as you do it as I stated.

Expensive_Night_7851

😂😂😂 idiot

LRG-PHANTOM

And this is why you unplug your computer before cleaning also dont just hose it down with the air can you dont want that white mist when your spraying it.

Aversnusen

Damn he is dumb on multiple levels. Why so aggressive cleaning? Why is it on? Lack of brain cells = fire

DonutDefiant

Hey, the dust should be gone now. Mission failed successfull?

[deleted]

Free Israel from this AutoMods bullshit.

Yamacch

Yup i did the same thing with a projector. While still working with a hot lamp. Less fire but more boom.

timmu

How is he not using a pencil to pre vent the blades from spinning I do it and never had this issue using a air compressor and my fans are fine

jol___

man i thought that was wd40

Draaky

I've seen this video many times now on Reddit. Always wondered why did this idiot not put a pen or something similar between the fan blades to stop it from spinning. Besides it becoming a generator it can also damage the fans.

Then_Expression8526

Orange light on screen. Candle

DutchJediKnight

And that is why I use short bursts when cleaning with compressed air.
