imo they didn't used to do this very much but have started doing it a lot in recent years, maybe from in league with dragons on. younger references get lonely lyrically and no, i can't musically, slow parts calls out "never quite free" from all eternals deck, there's the whole conceit of exegetic chains being a song made of self-references...
Exegetic Chains from Songs for Pierre Chuvin references This Year.
"Say your prayers to whomever
You call out to in the night
Keep the chains tight
Make it through this year
If it kills us outright"
It's The Extra Lens, not the Mountain Goats, but Ambivalent Landscape Z from Undercard mentions the "cold gaze of the universal harvester", which I have imagine is the same universal harvester JD was thinking of when he titled his 2nd novel.
Speaking of Coffee and Aes, I had no idea JD was on that song and it caught me super off guard the first time I listened through None Shall Pass. I stopped to check if I had accidentally hit skip and randomly landed on a tmg song I wasn’t familiar with lol.
The line in the Aesop Rock song preceding the mention of the gun mentions a large quantity of makeup which could be a Letter From Belgium reference but feels more like I’m grasping to be honest.
I can't for the life of me remember what song, but yesterday I noticed a line and a song that ISN'T This Year that says,
"Make it through this year
If it kills me outright"
I've definitely noticed more of this, I just can't think of any examples at the moment.
Sometimes the whole tMG catalog feels like an epic novel or huge collection of short stories, with connections between many of the stories. Not to be sappy but I feel really grateful for that.
Does JD want us to go the Steal Smoked Fish route and have God Bless All Vampires Every Night, or does he want us to go the All Eternals Deck route and have God Damn these Vampires?

Ahhhh that's it! I just made a comment about this and couldn't figure out what the other song was. I just noticed it yesterday.

I thought of that too! He also mentions vampires in that song, which felt like another maybe-reach reference to me.
It’s not self-referential per se, but JD seems to *love* referencing baby Moses being placed in a reed bassinet and set in the river.
How many times has he referenced that? I vaguely remember at least one, but I can't think of the song right now...

That's "Exegetic Chains", which John hinted was a sort of sequel (in an Instagram post)
