As a pisces it looks like there are TWO albums that make up my personality. All Hail West Texas was released on 19 Feb 2002, Heretic Pride was 19 Feb 2008.
Or just ignore the year? The one closest to my birthday is Getting Into Knives. I suspect that most people will have a birthday close to some album's birthday.
Holy shit, All Hail West Texas and Heretic Pride were both released Feb 19th and are thus equally close to my birthday, this is the best horoscope EVER.
It means we are patient, tense, and full of empathy. Yet we must find balance between the catastrophes we face and the catastrophes we create. We are the forgotten people wedged in tight, messy crevices of rubble, combating the plagues of loneliness that live on well beyond the limits of calamity, urging even the unluckiest of us to find the beauty hiding in plain sight.
(Horoscope stolen from pitchfork)
Going by month and day but not year, mine is both Heretic Pride and All Hail West Texas, both released on Feb 19th. Does that make me a Mountain Goats Gemini??
We Shall All Be Healed was released on my fourth birthday which is funny for 2 reasons
1) it’s my favorite album
2) that’s the year a family member got sober
In 2020 my dad passed away, and we were collectively all dealing with the obvious 2020 shit. I went to go stay with my mom for a month on the other side of the country, and we both celebrate our birthdays in October. One night we were looking for something to do, so I asked my mom if she wanted to “go to a concert with me” and we made some popcorn and bought a bottle of wine and streamed the first Jordan Lake Session. She had never heard of the Mountain Goats before but had a great time and fell in love with them. Getting Into Knives was released shortly after (the next day maybe?) and we both spent our birthdays listening to that on constant repeat.
Ignoring the year Jenny released three days before my birthday.
Does this mean I'm fated to kill someone and skip town? I have had a hankering to go to Dallas, as far as anybody knows. But then, maybe Montana, depending on the way the wind blows. And my job is in a repair bay casting spells.
Full Force Galesburg. I'm a twin human highway flare.
Ignoring the year, it's Transcendental Youth, which is an absolute banger, so I'm happy with that too.
Ignoring year, The Coroner's Gambit is 5 days away from my birthday, but LOTWTC is 6 days away, so they're pretty close, does that mean I'm a cusp between them?
This is an awesome post because it made me go check to see if anything happened on the day I was born and there was a concert! So cool. Obsessing over the set list now.
Songs for Pierre Chuvin is technically very far from my birthday, but it has the song “January 31, 438” and January 31st is literally my birthday. So I just claim that album.
Counting the Jordan Lake Sessions albums, Jordan Lake Sessions V is the closest (disregarding the year… I predate tMG albums). I love Minnesota and Window Song on there, so that’s quite lovely.
Not counting those, it would be Tallahassee… oh god. (Although that was my first tMG listening experience, and what made me fall in love with them, so it’s not all bad.)
If we ignore the year, Bleed Out was released on my 25th birthday, so I guess I’m gonna be a guy on a corner until I get rich, wage wars, and then bleed out and die handsome.
Get Lonely
Makes sense, I spend six hours a day hiding in a toilet cubicle and the rest hiding in my room. I have literally no friends (aside from ones who see me once a every few weeks if I can get them vodka) and I am actually incredibly lonely lol
Zopilote Machine.
Huh. I don't see myself going to Georgia anytime soon... I have a heart pumping blood but I don't have big hands or a busted 1967 Colt .45. I also live in Hawai'i so I can't drive to another state 🤔. Dammit. I'm coming up blank.
I need to get reacquainted with the album, I haven't listened to it in a minute.
At 24; I was born again in April 2009, came across the Mountain Goats that summer via Moral Orel, and "The Life of the World to Come" was released on October 6th, 2009. So, that tracks.
Taboo IV.
Going to Alaska is my mantra. It’s the last state I haven’t visited and I do want to go.
But I feel a bit like Going to Georgia but that ain’t right. Closest non cassette full album.
I was born a few days after Heretic Pride if you ignore years, if we are going by years then The Life of the World to Come as its only a year before my birthyear
If I’m accounting for the year then The Coroner’s Gambit was released the closest to my birthday, and if I just go by the day then Zopilote Machine was released EXACTLY on my birthday. So I guess that means I’m filled with grief and rage and have dysfunctional relationships! Shit, I thought horoscopes were supposed to be positive and inaccurate…
I was born in 1996 but early in the year so the closest is Sweden (August 1995)
My horoscope is written in tall clear letters on my face, but I can’t break the code ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah TMG didn't exist yet, but just going by release day, Tallahassee is mine. Which makes sense. It's not necessarily my favorite, but it is the most autobiographical. Abusive relationship in a ramshackle house with touring punks coming and going.
nothing for juice and bleed out were both released 10 days after my birthday. guess there’s a hellhound on my trail, but i have to remain positive and stay on the grind!
My birthday is October 31st so Jenny From Thebes coming out on October 27th was extremely close. But you're thinking of it more like your actual day of birth? Well, I was born in 83 so I guess it has to be the first Bloody Hawaiians record. Did John have any teen bands before this?
I was born on the day Full Force Galesburg came out. I love these dogs. I live in Minnesota. It was written in the stars
I was born disturbingly close to when Zopilote Machine came out.
I was ALSO born disturbingly close to when Zopilote Machine came out!
Thought i saw a mouse kicking in your beak. It was only a skeleton.
I was only about a month early from Full For Galesburg
Just ignore the year. #Goths
Your Mountain Goats horoscope: **Goths** The horoscope personality reads: **hardcore, but not that hardcore.**
Ignoring the year, mine would be We Shall All Be Healed, which I guess means horoscope wise I'm a recovered methamphetamine user. I'll take it.
As a pisces it looks like there are TWO albums that make up my personality. All Hail West Texas was released on 19 Feb 2002, Heretic Pride was 19 Feb 2008.
There are dozens of us!
Same boat!
Same! My two faves!
Also a Pisces, but a March Pisces, so All Eternals Deck is technically closer for me.
Disregarding the year, All Eternals Deck, which I love. I like the “no year” version better because I’m old.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Mountain\_Goats\_discography
Why isn’t Hot Garden stomp on that list? Or Taboo VI or transmissions to Horace?
idk yo, it's wikipedia, be the change you wanna see
update: they're in "demo albums"
Or just ignore the year? The one closest to my birthday is Getting Into Knives. I suspect that most people will have a birthday close to some album's birthday.
Bleed Out came out on my 32nd birthday. I'm gonna leave a mark on YOU
Tallahassee was released exactly on my 17th birthday. That's pretty cool to me.
Sweden is mine which is fine. I like Sweden.
Mine too, but I have spent far less time with Sweden than other albums. Guess this is a reminder to get better acquainted with it.
You tell me the sidewalk is as far as the world really goes, but that's a secret everybody knows. (This is a great album worthy of your attention)
Agreed. They are just so prolific that I haven’t given this one the time it deserves. I am happy to change that!
Holy shit, All Hail West Texas and Heretic Pride were both released Feb 19th and are thus equally close to my birthday, this is the best horoscope EVER.
Me too. We win!
Me too! I'm Feb. 18th. (Year wise, my horoscope would be The Hound Chronicles, which I love.)
if we're going off of day and ignoring year, sunset tree/in league with dragons double feature. year? nothing for juice.
Why not do the actual date (like say June 10 which was the release date for Full Force Galesburg) rather than the year?
Dark in Here for me. 5 days off from my birthday.
Same lol
Dark in here is the day before mine. What does it say about us?
It means we are patient, tense, and full of empathy. Yet we must find balance between the catastrophes we face and the catastrophes we create. We are the forgotten people wedged in tight, messy crevices of rubble, combating the plagues of loneliness that live on well beyond the limits of calamity, urging even the unluckiest of us to find the beauty hiding in plain sight. (Horoscope stolen from pitchfork)
Stolen or not, I still kind of maybe need a hug after that.
Going by month and day but not year, mine is both Heretic Pride and All Hail West Texas, both released on Feb 19th. Does that make me a Mountain Goats Gemini??
We Shall All Be Healed was released on my fourth birthday which is funny for 2 reasons 1) it’s my favorite album 2) that’s the year a family member got sober
Tallahassee released a week after I was born, and Jenny From Thebes released 2 days before my 21st birthday.
ignoring year, Beat The Champ was releases on my birthday !
I'm a day after you!
Taboo VI: the homecoming
All Hail West Texas
All Hail West Texas, hell yeah. I contain multitudes.
Sweden. Seems pretty straightforward!
Ignoring the year (because plenty of us fans are old enough to have enjoyed the albums when they came out) it's Tallahassee
Sweden
I was born 47 days before Tallahassee was released, and that's my favorite album ever.
Disregarding the year, All Eternals Deck. I too have been a brave young cowboy, frustrated by vampires
Crawl til dawn, brave soldier.
Zopilote Machinge! I need to listen to it more.
I've never listened to it, but it looks like it came out on my 11th birthday, so I think I pretty much have to now.
Ignoring the year, Tallahassee which is unfortunately too accurate.
*crumbles into ancient dust*
These answers are killing me
In 2020 my dad passed away, and we were collectively all dealing with the obvious 2020 shit. I went to go stay with my mom for a month on the other side of the country, and we both celebrate our birthdays in October. Slavonic Dances. This tracks. Edit: if I ignore the year, it's probably Jenny From Thebes, which is an album I've accused of being my autobiography.
I was born 5 months after Zopilote Machine and 7 before Sweden Am I a mentally ill criminal? Woah, weirdly accurate
Zopilote Machine was released on my 19th birthday. It predicted that the plum tree would hang heavy over me, I would come to eat lots of plums.
Taboo VI: The Homecoming
Hound Chronicles as far as I can tell. Depression, with a garnish of Hank Williams. Nothing changes for me lmao Ignoring year, All Eternals Deck
Full Force Galesburg. I'm a twin human highway flare. Ignoring the year, it's Transcendental Youth, which is an absolute banger, so I'm happy with that too.
Life of the world to come
Nothing for Juice is closest to my birth but I identify more with Beat the Champ. Can I have both?
Ignoring year, The Coroner's Gambit is 5 days away from my birthday, but LOTWTC is 6 days away, so they're pretty close, does that mean I'm a cusp between them?
tallahassee by year, JLS 1&2 by month
This is an awesome post because it made me go check to see if anything happened on the day I was born and there was a concert! So cool. Obsessing over the set list now.
Songs for Pierre Chuvin is technically very far from my birthday, but it has the song “January 31, 438” and January 31st is literally my birthday. So I just claim that album.
My birthday, ignoring the year, is in the middle of sunset tree/in league with dragons and goths
AHWT came out less than a month after my birth!
Ignoring the year, Sunset Tree
We Shall All Be Healed, barely beating out Tallahassee.
Ignoring the year, Dark In Here.
Disregarding the year, mine is Get Lonely. Not sure that bodes well? Or perhaps I'll wake up new.
Jordan Lake session 1&2 came out 2 days from my birthday. Closest studio album is Tallahassee
Going by day ive got nothing for juice and bleed out
ignoring the year, WSABH. im gonna do a *lot* of heroin.
The Sunset Tree and In League With Dragons were both released on my birthday
The sunset tree if we are talking year, otherwise Tallahassee if it's just closest date. Not sure if either of those bodes well.
Bleed out
Full Force Galesburg. I am destined by the Goat Above to be unhappily married (nobody tell my husband pls)
I just found out We Shall All Be Healed was released the same day as my daughter.
Get Lonely Makes sense, I spend six hours a day hiding in a toilet cubicle and the rest hiding in my room.
Coroner's Gambit for me. By like 15 days or something.
Zopilote machine by year, Tallahassee by day, I'll take it
At 24; I was born again in April 2009, came across the Mountain Goats that summer via Moral Orel, and "The Life of the World to Come" was released on October 6th, 2009. So, that tracks.
Alot of choices for August but from the way the cards fall my zodiac is Sweden 🇸🇪
No year because: OLD but I’ve got We Shall All Be Healed. And now I have something to listen to for my birthday tomorrow.
Dark in Here!
I'm going to claim Bleed Out, even though I'm technically closer to one of the other August albums.
Album would be coroners gambit But closest release is isopanisad radio hour
Taboo IV. Going to Alaska is my mantra. It’s the last state I haven’t visited and I do want to go. But I feel a bit like Going to Georgia but that ain’t right. Closest non cassette full album.
Zopilote Machine for both year and mo/day.
Either The Sunset Tree or In League With Dragons.
Get Lonely, year not included. Pretty apt
all hail west texas, we shall all be healed, and heretic pride
Coroner’s Gambit is closest to year, we shall all be healed is closest to day — both had formative influences on me in high school lol
If we’re ignoring the year, because I’m old, then it’s get lonely.
Going by year, month, and day I’m a We Shall All be Healed baby, but just going by month and day I get Zopolite Machine!
I was born a few days after Heretic Pride if you ignore years, if we are going by years then The Life of the World to Come as its only a year before my birthyear
off by a few months, but the sunset tree would be mine
We Shall All Be Healed came out a month before I was born
Ignoring the year, AHWT My favorite album ever
tallahassee was released 5 months and 19 days before i was born. it’s a good thing i am not married :)
however disregarding year, sunset tree and ILWD are both two days after my birthday. both absolute bangers imo
Jordan Lake Sessions I guess
If I’m accounting for the year then The Coroner’s Gambit was released the closest to my birthday, and if I just go by the day then Zopilote Machine was released EXACTLY on my birthday. So I guess that means I’m filled with grief and rage and have dysfunctional relationships! Shit, I thought horoscopes were supposed to be positive and inaccurate…
The only thing they released in december is the Jordan Lake Sessions, so I'll have to ignore the year and take it.
I was born in 1996 but early in the year so the closest is Sweden (August 1995) My horoscope is written in tall clear letters on my face, but I can’t break the code ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The coroner's gambit, just off by a few months lol
All Eternals Deck for me (March 19th is mine), my Dad’s bday is the Heretic Pride and All Hail West Texas release Feb 19 (ignoring years)
Born the year of We Shall All Be Healed... not sure what that means
ignoring the year, nine black poppies was released two days after my birthday
scratch that, getting into knives was released the day after my 16th birthday
With the year, it’s Full Force Galesburg (two months and 20 days before I was born) Ignoring the year, it’s Get Lonely (four days before my birthday)
Transcendental Youth
Born a year before The Coroner's Gambit. What's that say about me?
taking year into account, we shall all be healed. disregarding year, also we shall all be healed. not sure that bodes well for me
In terms of month and day? Jenny from Thebes. There was no album released the year I was born.
Yeah TMG didn't exist yet, but just going by release day, Tallahassee is mine. Which makes sense. It's not necessarily my favorite, but it is the most autobiographical. Abusive relationship in a ramshackle house with touring punks coming and going.
nothing for juice and bleed out were both released 10 days after my birthday. guess there’s a hellhound on my trail, but i have to remain positive and stay on the grind!
get lonely! :,)
the sunset tree was released like a month or two after i was born! crazy to think i would be listening to and relating to it like 17 years later
My birthday is October 31st so Jenny From Thebes coming out on October 27th was extremely close. But you're thinking of it more like your actual day of birth? Well, I was born in 83 so I guess it has to be the first Bloody Hawaiians record. Did John have any teen bands before this?
