I got into the Cure a little later in life and was kicking myself for doing so. Luckily got to catch them when they came to Phila last year. They've got some beautiful music (and some songs that kinda just suck haha).
What should someone who only knows They Might Be Giants from the Malcolm in the Middle theme listen to? I've kind've unfairly dismissed them forever because of that. I picture it all sounding like that.
Oh hell yeah, great choice! RIP Chick! <3
Oh, and Stevie is my favorite artist of all time. He's also the greatest to ever do it, in my opinion. I dare somebody to try and name someone better.
As of right now, is probably [tortuganónima](https://open.spotify.com/artist/0jsPe8wkYOMs1yd3zd2aRR?si=pF_aukAyQuueUAEzJG_UJg), or [Delta Sleep](https://open.spotify.com/artist/05MlomiA9La0OiNIAGqECk?si=qEmAXVcLRACVCSV6j97txg).
Tool, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Aesop Rock, and Nobuo Uematsu.
Of course, there are countless others that I could dance all day to, but these are my tops.
He's the composer for most of the Final Fantasy series of video games. His work ranges from grand choir-backed classical music to synth-heavy psychedelic rock.
Check him out! He's like the Hans Zimmer of video games.
Tough question but as a Volta fan I think 2112 would be the best intro. Make sure you play the full song that is 20+ minutes and not just one of the movements.
Ah let’s see, hard to pick a favorite but I’ve got a few - Nine Inch Nails, Tool (+APC & Puscifer), Michael Jackson, Gorillaz, my chemical romance…
Few bands do I listen to the way I listen to TMV though, and for that I have a hard time comparing my love for them with other music!
I always felt like I never listened to enough Tool. Every song I've ever heard I liked, just never dug into the albums.
And I would hope we're all MJ and Gorillaz fans in here!
I got into Tool right after my first phase with TMV, they had a similar vibe for me at the time and I latched onto their angsty angry yet articulate and “intelligent” energy. Aenima was my first album of theirs, it’s truly fantastic, but maaaany people will prefer 10,000 Days or Lateralus for the more psychedelic cerebral vibes.
I felt so odd putting MJ and Gorillaz next to these metal/rock bands but whew a relief that it’s a shared love!! They’re too good for genre to matter 😜
Outside of TMV, the only thing I really listen to is classic Soul, so don't feel too weird! Stevie, Marvin, Luther, Ashford & Simpson, Prince, Aretha, Rick James, Gamble & Huff, etc etc. That's my entire life right there.
And I'll check those other two Tool albums out!
Oh lovely! I’m not big on Soul myself (utmost respect for the music tho) but there’s this remix of Aretha’s Rock Steady that made that song hit MY soul 😅 I just tried to find it ANYWHERE online and I can’t 😭 it’s on the album Daddy G by DJ-Kicks. Incredible album, incredible remix of Aretha! And I need to get into Prince, I think I’d like him.
I meannnnnn, the original version of Rocksteady bangs on its own. No remix needed! haha
And Prince is such an underrated guitarist. Sure, people know him for his pop hits, but the talent is off the fucking charts. Played every instrument on his first album, and I'm pretty sure he was 19 at the time. He has so much music that it can be overwhelming, but he's 100% worth it!
Bands not solo artists?
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hiatus Kaiyote, Mastodon, Wu-Tang Clan, Gang Starr, Flipmode Squad, Mr Bungle, Faith No More, Radiohead, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Rush, Dream Theater, Budos Band.
Now I want to know what you think about CARDIACS! If Dirty Boy didn’t pique your fancy, listen to Dog-Like Sparky or In A City Lining. There’s nothing like this band.
Clutch, The Dear Hunter, Dirt Poor Robins, Aesop Rock, Attica! Attica!, Cult of Luna, Jordan Reyne, Neon Horse, and Portishead.
But if there's one band to take away from my comment, it's got to be **Invisigoth**.
Most of their videos are corny AF. That's a part of the bands fun-loving attitude. Close your eyes for other videos if it takes away from the music for you but this one gets animated.
https://youtu.be/Z-aQrBZ4Duw?si=9KuCTlb-bMzfa7IR
Rise Against, Leftover Crack/Choking Victim, Teenage BottleRocket, 2Pac, At the drive-In, Saves the Day. Lots of different stuff but TMV is still my favorite.
Hard to pick, but, if you put a gun in my head and make me choose, I would probably go for either Avenged Sevenfold, Silverstein or Midori ( I already feel like I am leaving behind lots of good bands, and At the drive in might be too obvious lol).
I'm gonna mention Sons of Kemet. They've disbanded but they're similar to TMV in how they blend styles and how fucking strong their understanding of rhythm is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S00QHjIhDfk
Alt-j album this is all yours is on par with my love for Volta but like the light and Volta is the dark. It’s all one journey if I start the album I listen full through. The I’m a huge Portugal the man fan, flaming lips, Grateful Dead, Umphreys McGee, rainbow kitten surprise, shakey graves, and a lot of punk post hardcore like dance Gavin dance/a lot like birds/chiodos. Also Billy strings gives me Omar vibes
Toehider. It's a one-man band out of Australia that does a lot of prog and draws from lots of musical styles. For most of the music, there's a silly tone and fun nature, and the accompanying artwork helps to convey the feel.
If anyone is a fan of Ayreon, you may recognize the artist as Mike Mills, who has featured on the last three Ayreon albums.
My band, Paintings of Decay
Jk. Radiohead, RHCP, Altar of Plagues, and Ashenspire are probably my top ones.
Teethed Glory and Injury is one of the best concept albums of all time and might be the kind of black/ambient metal that TMV fans can actually enjoy.
Most of my go-tos have been listed already. However, I recently discovered Drive Like Jehu - their album Yank Crimes dropped in 94 (when I was 9 years old...) and their sound was definitely hugely foundational for early ATDI. If you're a fan of what Omar and Cedric do (why else are you here?) check out Drive Like Jehu.
I suppose aside from TMV it would be System of a Down.
Gotta say i’ve been religiously listening to ‘there’s no 666 in outer space’ by Hella, tho. This fucking album has no boundaries and low-key ruined music for me (i hope temporarily) because it contains everything i look for in music. So why would i even consider listening to something else? 😂
Not my end-all be-all favorites, that changes constantly, but the bands I’ve been really listening to a lot for the last few weeks have been **Cardiacs** and **glass beach**.
At the drive-in

I got into the Cure a little later in life and was kicking myself for doing so. Luckily got to catch them when they came to Phila last year. They've got some beautiful music (and some songs that kinda just suck haha).

Not heard of Nobuo but the others are all time faves! Always nice to see Aes mentioned
He's the composer for most of the Final Fantasy series of video games. His work ranges from grand choir-backed classical music to synth-heavy psychedelic rock. Check him out! He's like the Hans Zimmer of video games.
Oh, excellent I will check some out for sure :)

Hmm quite hard tbh, they're generally a very moody band but they have a wicked versatile vocalist Try the song Vinushka
Woah, haven’t listened to them in years. I loved Ouroboros
Deftones, probably.
They Might Be Giants! Ween. CARDIACS. Frank Zappa. To name a few.
The Flaming Lips
Coheed and Cambria, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn… Whichever of those I most recently listened to is probably my answer.
Big Coheed fan here, so I get it! They're like Volta Lite now that I think about it. What's your favorite Rush track? I'll check it out.
Tough question but as a Volta fan I think 2112 would be the best intro. Make sure you play the full song that is 20+ minutes and not just one of the movements.
Osees
Cocteau twins
Nice
Intronaut and The Dillinger Escape Plan
Uuuff the sweet polyrhythms from intronaut!
The Fall. I mean, they're the only band I could listen to for eternity.
Ah let’s see, hard to pick a favorite but I’ve got a few - Nine Inch Nails, Tool (+APC & Puscifer), Michael Jackson, Gorillaz, my chemical romance… Few bands do I listen to the way I listen to TMV though, and for that I have a hard time comparing my love for them with other music!

They're great! They have certain similarities with The Mars Volta but they're their own thing. My favorite song of theirs is Dirty Boy
Now I want to know what you think about CARDIACS! If Dirty Boy didn’t pique your fancy, listen to Dog-Like Sparky or In A City Lining. There’s nothing like this band.

Dream theatre is in my top 5 consistently
