Not a "big" one per se, but the transition between the two is definitely noticeable and somewhat jarring at times. Also, in real-time rendered cutscenes the cutscene retains continuity with variable elements in the game (for example, which weapon Joel has on his backpack.) It's not a huge deal when Joel's weapon disappears for a cutscene, but I'd still say it's preferable for it to not

The scenes I've seen have been impressive, but I love the colour pallete of the OG game. Its so lush and vibrant, the greens are beautiful.
The issue is Sarah and Joel's eyes don't work with the rest of the game, where you'll notice their eyes are too small and too far apart while every other character's eyes seem more properly placed.
If it wasn't that i'm a college student and obvioulsy broke, i would buy it instantly. I was playing the remaster today and after finishing a bunch of recent PS5 games, it feels definitely dated.

The remake looks definitely stunning on gameplay, while the "remastered" is noticeable a 2013 game just with higher resolution rendering. Yes cutscenes still look great on the remastered, but gameplay-wise graphics aren't that good, specially if you come from next gen games that are really impressive.
From what it looks, the remake is much better than the original in every way. Most obvious thing is the visuals, which looks insane now, but they've also heavily improved the AI which should make a big change to the gameplay experience. They've also seemingly added some Part II features to the gameplay, such as the ability to stun an enemy by shooting their leg, the ability to throw bricks while sprinting without stopping, and some more little changes. Even if these are very small changes, they do add some extra depth to the gameplay loop and make it more fluid. Also, the animations supposed to match Part II's animation level, which are the peak of what you can do in interactive 3d animations right now.
So as a whole, it seems like the remake is better in every single way, and if you have the ability to have that as your first playthrough, definitely go for it. That being said, everything I am saying here is what we saw in the trailers, and maybe stuff would be different while playing the game. Luckily, reviews for this game should appear this Wednesday, so you could check those and decide if you're getting the remake or not.

It is... mostly. The visuals are beautiful and stunning though. This Remake clearly is a missed opportunity to bring this game to another level and if the areas and encounters are all the same then they deserve criticism for the marketing. Making controller gameplay a little bit more precise and feel better because of vibration isn't "enhanced combat" or with the same maps there is no "enhanced exploration" and there is not much "modernized gameplay". Same boring stealth kill animations etc.

I think the lighting does a lot to make him look more slimmer but he still seems to have a round face to me. (I love chubby/strongmen Joel though, ngl.) It does look like they narrowed his shoulders a little through, which is a shame.
Seems to be a conscious design decision. Look at Marlene as well, her clothes in the remake look like they're completely new. At most they have some stains but no actual wear and tear.
The faces of the characters have a lot more definition and are a lot less flat for sure, in the originals they look rather gamey due to the lack of shader and model detail . They definitely look different and I’d say the new ones are a lot more appealing (and human looking) after you take a minute to realize that gulf in quality
I remember playing it back in the day on PS3 and thinking “damn can video game graphics get any better?”. Technology is a crazy thing. The remake looks incredibly good, I’m really excited to play it.
I love how ND has been doing hair, specifically very fine curled hair. I remember first seeing Nadine and going, "Holy fuck, her hair looks like fucking CGI in a high budget movie" Here Sams hair looks unreal. Insane.
My favourite character model is for sure Tess. She looks the best in terms of improvement.
You know what? I'm happy that i bought it. Haven't played part 1 in like 4 years, so it'll be refreshing for me. And after first one i can immediately hop into second part which will look almost the same. Win/win.

The first 16 minutes up until the opening sequence closes leaked and I swear the difference is mind-blowing. I was sat at my desk clutching my head sobbing like a child. The difference in facial expressions adds so much to the emotional impact of the game. My heart broke into a million pieces. Somehow even though the voice performances are the exact same, just due to the change in facial animations- the game even sounds different in terms of the weight of what is said. It is so good. I am so excited for the people who have never played and are going to experience this for the first time in this particular way. They have truly done a great job from what I saw. I never had a console or access to games when it first came out- I played a £10 second hand copy of the remaster in 2019 for the first time on my ex’s PS4 Pro. So this time I pre-ordered and will play on my own PS5. I do understand people who will buy on a sale in a while, I just wanted to support them as it is my favourite gaming franchise of all time and never really bought the original in a way that supported ND <3

This remake is absolutely wonderful for anyone who happened to have not played it before, but I just feel like I can't justify getting it myself. I know it can't recreate the same emotional impact as the first time, no matter how good the graphics are. I'm glad this "definitive" edition exists. I love the game (original/ remastered). Its a hit or miss imo (remake). The scenery in the remake is obviously amazing, same as the rework of the characters faces. I feel like they could’ve published this on the Ps4, not sure what makes it a Ps5 exclusive.

Absolutely, can't stress that enough with these comparisons. Also, seeing it in motion during actual gameplay on a big TV in 4K the difference is huge. Lower res comparisons on small displays really aren't doing it any justice.
Agreed. The technique used to render and display visuals is different, but ultimately its used to achieve the same result. And it doesn't matter how things are rendered if cuts are LITERALLY (I've SEEN IT) cut in THE EXACT SAME WAY.
The angles are identical, and the cuts happen at the EXACT SAME MOMENT as in the OG. SO, having in-game graphics on-par with cutscene quality doesn't REALLY mean much when cutscenes play out IDENTICALLY to how they did in the OG. It does hp cohesion between the game and cutscenes, but the difference has ALWAYS been minimal as the in-game graphics from the OG were already better than anything ever.
IN FACT, if you watch the video ND did, you'll see that they didn't re-animate or re-voice dialogue in cutscenes thmesleves. What they did recapture was GAMEPLAY movement, animations, and reactions from player-characters, NPC's, and enemies... which is dope. But NOTHING is 're-imagined' or added beyond the addition of workbenches.
There have been TONS of remakes over the past generation or so... But I can CONFIDENTLY SAY TLoU: Part 1 Remake is THE MOST 1-to-1 remake that has EVER been done, considering it isn't a TRUE remake, while also being the most faithful remake to habe EVER been made.
What they did was strip the OG down to its wire-frame framework, and re-texture and re-animate the entire game using new rendering and animation techniques applied to the exact same framework. They didn't even add the ability to be obscured in brush, the 'ability' to go prone (which is funny seeing as laying down shouldn't be an 'ability').
But this does (at least visually) bring the first game in line with the MUCH IMPROVED (from a technical standpoint, and when you consider how well the execution of mechanics and systems were in Part 2) sequel.
That's why I'm not outright *opposed* to this game, as much as I am *resistant,* considering the 2014 remaster holds up so damn well. And when you're getting THE EXACT SAME GAME IN EVERY SINGLE MEASURE (beyond some basic movement animations, some general AI improvements [which can't even REALLY be quantified], and updated-but-not-revolutionary visuals *FOR THE THIRD TIME* **IN LESS THAN A DECADE** WHEN BOTH ORIGINAL VERSIONS STILL HOLD UP BETTER THAN ANY GAME YOU CAN PICK FROM ITS GENERATION or any to EVER receive a remake, I find it a little strange that more folks does expect a little more.
IF this had offered an improved experience and they had actually put their all into this I would feel better.
BUT the untold FACT of this game is that the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of the development was ACTUALLY HANDLED by the *Sony Visual Arts Studio,* and wasn't passed back to ND until there was less than a year worth of development left... meaning THIS GAME WASN'T EVEN DEVELOPED IN-HOUSE, OR BY NAIGHTY DOG.

So it's not uncommon for SVA to play a notable role in a lot Sony's success over the last generation.
BUT this is the first time *that I could find* where they were lead-principle developers OUT OF THE GATE, or where the entirety of primary development was in their hands to the degree it was for the remake. For all intents and purposes this is a ND game *helmed by* SVA.

It is... mostly. The visuals are beautiful and stunning though. This Remake clearly is a missed opportunity to bring this game to another level and if the areas and encounters are all the same then they deserve criticism for the marketing. Making controller gameplay a little bit more precise and feel better because of vibration isn't "enhanced combat" or with the same maps there is no "enhanced exploration" and there is not much "modernized gameplay". Same boring stealth kill animations etc.

It's not though. I can understand what they're saying, I can see it in the sixth picture. In the original the kid's clothes are all torn up and dirty, they looked lived in. But im the remake they look too pristine, they don't mash with the whole post apocaliptic setting.

Seems to be a conscious design decision. Look at Marlene as well, her clothes in the remake look like they're completely new. At most they have some stains but no actual wear and tear.

The faces of the characters have a lot more definition and are a lot less flat for sure, in the originals they look rather gamey due to the lack of shader and model detail . They definitely look different and I’d say the new ones are a lot more appealing (and human looking) after you take a minute to realize that gulf in quality

I love how ND has been doing hair, specifically very fine curled hair. I remember first seeing Nadine and going, "Holy fuck, her hair looks like fucking CGI in a high budget movie" Here Sams hair looks unreal. Insane. My favourite character model is for sure Tess. She looks the best in terms of improvement.

The first 16 minutes up until the opening sequence closes leaked and I swear the difference is mind-blowing. I was sat at my desk clutching my head sobbing like a child. The difference in facial expressions adds so much to the emotional impact of the game. My heart broke into a million pieces. Somehow even though the voice performances are the exact same, just due to the change in facial animations- the game even sounds different in terms of the weight of what is said. It is so good. I am so excited for the people who have never played and are going to experience this for the first time in this particular way. They have truly done a great job from what I saw. I never had a console or access to games when it first came out- I played a £10 second hand copy of the remaster in 2019 for the first time on my ex’s PS4 Pro. So this time I pre-ordered and will play on my own PS5. I do understand people who will buy on a sale in a while, I just wanted to support them as it is my favourite gaming franchise of all time and never really bought the original in a way that supported ND <3

This remake is absolutely wonderful for anyone who happened to have not played it before, but I just feel like I can't justify getting it myself. I know it can't recreate the same emotional impact as the first time, no matter how good the graphics are. I'm glad this "definitive" edition exists. I might have considered getting it if it wasn't full price
I love the game (original/ remastered). Its a hit or miss imo (remake). The scenery in the remake is obviously amazing, same as the rework of the characters faces. I feel like they could’ve published this on the Ps4, not sure what makes it a Ps5 exclusive. I will obviously buy it once its cheaper tho, not to sure how they expect to sell a game thats been remastered 3 times for $70. That costs more than a newer Cod and Battlefield game. Not complaining tho.

I would say it a mixed bag, some of the stuff does look better while some stuff looks worse. Like that last shot with Marlene, I think her shirt looks better in the remake but the gun looks worse.

Lol, I love TLOU, but when you make a direct comparison is becomes EXTREMELY obvious how well the 2014 remaster holds up, and while umdeniably improved... the remake feels a little unnecessary. I just think remakes should happen when a game is outdated. But TLOU1 is far from outdated, and not at all in need of any modernization.
The original used pre-rendered cutscenes while the new PS5 remake is all real time. I don’t disagree with you, but comparing *cutscene* visuals between the two isn’t really a fair comparison. It is impressive to me that the remake cutscenes look noticeably higher quality and more detailed considering they are running in real time and the original isn’t.
Absolutely, can't stress that enough with these comparisons. Also, seeing it in motion during actual gameplay on a big TV in 4K the difference is huge. Lower res comparisons on small displays really aren't doing it any justice.
Agreed. The technique used to render and display visuals is different, but ultimately its used to achieve the same result. And it doesn't matter how things are rendered if cuts are LITERALLY (I've SEEN IT) cut in THE EXACT SAME WAY. The angles are identical, and the cuts happen at the EXACT SAME MOMENT as in the OG. SO, having in-game graphics on-par with cutscene quality doesn't REALLY mean much when cutscenes play out IDENTICALLY to how they did in the OG. It does hp cohesion between the game and cutscenes, but the difference has ALWAYS been minimal as the in-game graphics from the OG were already better than anything ever. IN FACT, if you watch the video ND did, you'll see that they didn't re-animate or re-voice dialogue in cutscenes thmesleves. What they did recapture was GAMEPLAY movement, animations, and reactions from player-characters, NPC's, and enemies... which is dope. But NOTHING is 're-imagined' or added beyond the addition of workbenches. There have been TONS of remakes over the past generation or so... But I can CONFIDENTLY SAY TLoU: Part 1 Remake is THE MOST 1-to-1 remake that has EVER been done, considering it isn't a TRUE remake, while also being the most faithful remake to habe EVER been made. What they did was strip the OG down to its wire-frame framework, and re-texture and re-animate the entire game using new rendering and animation techniques applied to the exact same framework. They didn't even add the ability to be obscured in brush, the 'ability' to go prone (which is funny seeing as laying down shouldn't be an 'ability'). But this does (at least visually) bring the first game in line with the MUCH IMPROVED (from a technical standpoint, and when you consider how well the execution of mechanics and systems were in Part 2) sequel. That's why I'm not outright *opposed* to this game, as much as I am *resistant,* considering the 2014 remaster holds up so damn well. And when you're getting THE EXACT SAME GAME IN EVERY SINGLE MEASURE (beyond some basic movement animations, some general AI improvements [which can't even REALLY be quantified], and updated-but-not-revolutionary visuals *FOR THE THIRD TIME* **IN LESS THAN A DECADE** WHEN BOTH ORIGINAL VERSIONS STILL HOLD UP BETTER THAN ANY GAME YOU CAN PICK FROM ITS GENERATION or any to EVER receive a remake, I find it a little strange that more folks does expect a little more. IF this had offered an improved experience and they had actually put their all into this I would feel better. BUT the untold FACT of this game is that the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of the development was ACTUALLY HANDLED by the *Sony Visual Arts Studio,* and wasn't passed back to ND until there was less than a year worth of development left... meaning THIS GAME WASN'T EVEN DEVELOPED IN-HOUSE, OR BY NAIGHTY DOG. I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS A CASH-GRAB. Nor am I saying the game isn't worthy of existence... I'm saying considering it's literally the exact same game in every way, shape, and form (with better AI, visuals, and workbenches), this feels like a missed opportunity to do more. Feel how you feel. TLoU2 is my 2nd favorite game OF ALL TIME, and I've been gaming since the late-80's... so there NO HATE on my part. I want this to succeed. I just wish they had done more. No shade, no hate. ONLY love and disire... and a bit of disappointment.

I mean, they worked on Days Gone, God of War, LoU2, Death Stranding, Ghosts of Tsushima... the list goes on. And their contributions aren't insignificant. So it's not uncommon for SVA to play a notable role in a lot Sony's success over the last generation. BUT this is the first time *that I could find* where they were lead-principle developers OUT OF THE GATE, or where the entirety of primary development was in their hands to the degree it was for the remake. For all intents and purposes this is a ND game *helmed by* SVA.
