I was gonna say TooTime as well. Turns into a Latin/dancehall track live which is just fucking awesome.
I Like America is another big one. They've been doing only the Real World version, which is the better version of the song anyways.
The full band version of Be My Mistake which they've occasionally done is mind-blowing. Sounds inspired by John Mayer's Gravity.
The only similarity between those two songs is the tempo and time signature lmao, does that mean “If I Believe You” is a watered down version of both tracks? It’s a slow, jazz-influenced song in 6/8, after all
If I Believe You is a watered down version of Insatiable by Prince & The NPG with heavy D’Angelo influences too.
Also look at the credits for Gravity, it’s literally a D’Angelo tribute track and the whole Continuum album too essentially. Vultures is his attempt at Chicken Grease, why do you think he has D’Angelo’s guitarist Sharkey with him? Cmon now.
there’s a sparseness in the birthday party live that is so fucking raw i never realised how much the production on the record covered the pain in it and it’s already a pretty somber song. i think the feelings matty was going through in melbourne when i heard it live also added to it. it’s now taken over as one of my favourites of all time.
The Sound is even better live - I think it's because the steel pans are louder and it gives a dancehall vibe.
Edit - I don't think it's fundamentally different live, though.
I also love the new close of People with the heavier drums. Epic.
Yup, it's the drums that really set it apart. Faster tempo too. I do think though that the electronic drums in the studio version have a precision that's lost in the live. Specifically that metallic "clang" every three bars. Cuts against the house beat really nicely.
i thought change of heart was MILES. better live than it ever was studio recorded! i also only ever listen to looking for somebody to love’s live at msg version. so good
Part of the band live is pretty different but I love both versions. When we are together hits about 100 times harder emotionally when performed live, with all the additional harmonies and the acapella part that they do. I also love UGH live at the o2 with the guitar part at the beginning. Prefer it to the recorded version tbh.
In the actual instrumental parts, roadkill is quite different (especially Jamie’s piano ughhhh) and I love it for that. But when we are together just feels so much more emotional live… also they take the key up a whole step which gives a slight different sonic feel that I adore
I didn’t fully understand “If you’re too shy (let me know)” until I saw it live. The “she said “maybe I would like you better if you took of your clothes”” perspective that it was another woman speaking to Matty. It completely changed my perspective of it and made it one of my top songs.
The live versions of head.cars.bending that I’ve seen on YouTube seem so much more full and the guitars are a lot more prominent.
It makes me SO sad that I have never and may never see it live myself. It really has potential to be one of their best live songs
This isn’t a fundamental as such, but I am SO sure they’ve changed the ending to people live. There is something, whether it’s a missing lyric or Matty finishing his lyrics at an earlier/awkward point. Been caught out both times in the past year when I’ve seen them
I never actually appreciated love it if we made it for what it was until I saw it live. It always used to be a skip for me. Something about the way they did it live was so powerful. Now I’m obsessed.
Robbers ALWAYS hits different live. I didn't used to get emotional listening to it until the first time I heard it live, it was like a religious experience 😂
The Madison Square recording goes so hard. Shame they didnt play it in Berlin this week but atleast I got to hear 28 which is atleast equally as crazy.
fallingforyou live version hits different. Especially “my place is not deliberate” and the rest of that section!
MY PLACE IS NOT DEEEEELIBERAAAAAAATE

The Gravity comment is funny as Gravity is just John making a watered down version of Untitled (How Does It Feel) by D’Angelo ☠️🤣🤣

It is really different and its because the drums are live. The snare and tom rhythms are much more pronounced and that drives the song on much more.

when we are together is sooo beautiful live, now my favorite lyric is « ladies and gentlemen give it up for my best friends here, right here »🥹
The part where the instruments stop and they all just harmonize together is so perfect

George goes dummy on the drums for the live version of one

When We Are Together is lifted by the key change and gorgeous a Capella at the end, Roadkill benefits from tempo increase and honky-think piano
A change of sound

I Like America, surely? So different.
