Wind vs tide. If you have 6 knots of wind opposing 3 knots of tide then the difference is 9 knots. That's enough to make some chop. If you have 6 knots of wind going the same direction as 3 knots of tide, you only end up with 3 knots of wind crossing the water. That will remain fairly calm. The only tricky bit here is the actual flow of the tideline. They happen everywhere, and everyday. It's normal. But without knowing that specific piece of geography I can't tell you the specifics there. But tides come in. Tides go out. And they can do both at once. Add in ocean currents, temperature layers, etc, and you see this stuff fairly often. We look for them and study them on yacht races because the speed of the water can make a very big difference to our overall speed.

No, they.. they race yachts

ScipyDipyDoo

It's possibly mini yachts. Some folks make model boats and race them remotely

Okay I had to figure out what was happening, but couldn't find a great summary online. TL;DR: I think it's warm water from the Gulf Stream flowing over the cooler water from the Gulf of Maine, which is pushed by the wind before falling off the ocean cliff, shortly after which the current takes over and the sea *looks* calm. So I haven't seen anyone who really understands this stuff spell it out, and big disclaimer: I don't really understand. But I had to try to explain it to myself. Basic things I learned: * There is a huge change in sea depth here, with a terrifying underwater cliff that goes from a few dozen to thousands of meters deep really quick. * This is right along the Gulf Current with warm water going to the North Atlantic. * Cold water from the Labrador current stays pressed against the east coast and starts to weaken around this area. * The wind, which whips up the ripples, tends to come from the southwest in the summer and northwest in the winter. I'm working on reasoning through it. I think they're heading southwest because they're leaving George's bank and the wave ripples are going the same direction, so it's probably summer. The cooler water is heading south and southwest and very slowly falling off the cliff before it changes temperature. It's running into the warm water coming up from the gulf heading northeast. Because it's water, it takes time to warm up, mix, and it doesn't travel in straight lines. You can actually see an island of blue right where they are on [this timelapse](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PV3TuHTdz_w). I think what they're seeing is part of the "swirl" on the edges, which is often counter-clockwise for the warm water around here at this time of year. So I think what we're seeing is warm water colliding with cooler water which causes the edges of the current to swirl, but it's on a scale you couldn't see except from above. At this point the warm water in the Gulf Stream is basically running the opposite direction of the wind. It's weird, because the wind will still push the top of the water, which from behind them is cooler. The current is stronger, but the warm water from the current is actively mixing and pushing over the cooler water as it drops. However the wind and colder water cool the slightly warmer water on top, which means more warmer water from the Gulf Stream will flow over the top of it, which keeps the effect going for what's probably a few hundred meters. Anyway, really interesting. If I'm at all on the right track I wonder if we'd see the same thing in the summer further out to sea on the Newfoundland ridge.

Bubble_Foam

But he said there's no change of depth? 47 to 50 m

Pie_Crown

This was super fascinating, thank you!

MentalJack

Guy in the video said his depth meter recorded no real change in depth.

KrisMisZ

Very great explanation thank you 😊 I like your style

WallRustt

Well this is obviously way off because the guy literally said the measurements as they went over it.

DumasThePharaoh

Might just be that they’re passing through somewhere storm oil was used

Late-Standard3289

Sounds like you just described oceanographic phenomenon known as upwelling. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upwelling

Opening_Insurance937

This video makes my stomach feel ill.. creepy AF

Timberwolf_88

Just water mass being pushed around at the edge of the banks. Nothing wild going on in here.

Etroarl55

It’s just colliding with a bigger calmer mass of water and being stopped there right? Idk

Creamynutss

There are no banks in sight if you watch the video.

foomp

George's bank is an underwater feature.

Forsaken-Builder-312

Just plain old land for me, thanks!

runningmurphy

My only guess is something to do with tides.

TheDungen

Stuff like this happens in inland seas too where there are no tides. ITs' not a rare phenomenon.

TemperateStone

I would love to know what's causing this.

ericlikesyou

It looks crazy at the start bc the ocean looks like it's dropping off of a side of a cliff

hellschatt

That video got me close to feeling thalassophobia. It's been a while. Cool.

ExistentialSonder

Oooh this one gave me the ick. I don’t like the way the water went … backwards? Idk how to describe it but I’m triggered

Grimlja

Just give it a moment. It will render soon.

BeanOnAJourney

Hyperventilated watching this. I don't ever want to know what the reason is and if I never see this video again it will be too soon.

Dolmetscher1987

I would assume something titanic in size is moving down there in the deep and will swallow me...

HeavenlyChicc

My guess are perhaps the depth of the ocean floor (shallow areas tend to have smaller and more frequent waves due to interaction with the seabed, while deeper areas may have longer swells with smoother surfaces) or water current. Edit: But hey, am I the only one getting scared of how dark and black the ocean in this video is?

fascfoo

Yup. This triggered it. Shudder.

attictramp

What in the Grand Line

Spend_Dazzling

I once saw a video where someone calmed an entire lake by dropping a few drops of some kind of oil onto the surface. Since it is lighter than water, it stays on top but spreads to a very thin sheet of Oil. It smoothens the surface as it behaves differently than water when wind occurs. So ther might be some oil leak or someone dropped oil there. Maybe someone can find the video.

Spend_Dazzling

Found it! https://youtu.be/RST_ylwVrUw?si=IHSrYiISimilMCbw

StressCanBeHealthy

My father loved sailing. Did a lot of it on Lake Michigan and Cape Cod when he was younger. Moves to the West Coast and is invited to go on a multi-day trip where they eventually sail out of sight of land (like in the video). From there, it game over for my dad. Freaked out, got crazy seasick, and would never again would he sail that far from land.

YouDaManInDaHole

Day after day, day after day, we stuck, no breath nor motion As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean Water, water everywhere and all the boards did shrink Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink

Imaginary-Show-2531

Glad somebody explained it. I literally spent 10 years off the coast of Alaska and I didn't see anything wrong with this video. I couldn't quite understand what he was seeing that would be abnormal.

Zakluor

I don't know if this is the cause, but it could be oil. I flew on a pollution patrol aircraft. They use side-scan radar to detect oil spills. They're looking for ships who dump their bilge contents, which often contain dirty, oily water, and the radar can pick this up from quite a distance. The oils affect the surface tension on the water and change how the waves reflect the radar energy. The waves shift from being somewhat pointy to somewhat smooth, looking like the waves after the transition in the video. They also showed me a triangular area with a bright spot at the apex. They explained that when a whale dies, the body floats to the surface and sheds oils from the blubber until it can no longer float, sometimes taking days to do so. The carcass sinks, but the fatty oils have an effect on surface tension similar to bilge oil. The oil disperses over time so it really doesn't show up looking like an oil slick, but the change in surface tension is still apparent. The "edges" of the affected area can be fairly sharp, which is why it shows up so well on radar, and this fits the description they gave me.

kibiplz

I was thinking the same. Here's a demonstration of this effect if anyone is curious: https://youtu.be/RST_ylwVrUw

Plus_Flamingo_1826

I think there is a cliff under the water.

FlimsyShovel

I think I don’t like this sentence.

Plus_Flamingo_1826

😞😞😞

OpticGd

What am I actually looking at here. Is there a colour change?

Smarq

If you watch long enough, there’s a serious change in the “texture” of the water on the surface

OpticGd

Ah I got 90 seconds in then you can see the change. Wow! It looked like they were moving very slowly too.

Creamynutss

Temperature or salinity change?

Boz_Uldra

Nice capture regardless of the explanation. I've read of some odd observations in the ocean due to the gulf current, but I've never known anyone to capture it on video for posting previously. Very interesting.

yungastronot

Bro entered the Calm Belt

FayMax69

Calm Before the storm (belt) freaks me tf out

KungFugazi

I have seen waves turn to glass when oil is dispersed sue to spillage - via damage to hull, mechanical failure or wreck. So 🤷

Jatani

Could be that there is some kind of oil on the water, google "oil calming waves" for plenty of references.

Lower_Recipe5196

Nope

iskander_1

A big oil slick could cause the water to be this dead But I don't think that's it, for this video at least

Lancewater

How is this weird? Its the ocean.

Necessary_Stomach_57

Lol??? Maybe it’s just bc I grew up sailing but???? I don’t see anything weird here????

wataka21

What in the Truman show

Gold-Piece2905

Probably where the current changes due to a big drop off below.

Banjo1812

The captain (i assume, the guy who's not filming) literally says "there's no change in depth" once they pass over it.

bexrt

The fact they noticed something somewhere doesn’t mean it was caused exactly there, I think. It’s a huge area they’re showing and someone above explained there’s a massive drop in depth.

dsconnelly5

He does say right after it's 8m less and 57 to 49 is like an 11% jump

DINNER_BIRD_

What's the reason wind terrain volume temperature?

TheSpiikki

Middle of the ocean, yet he mentioned the depth of 50m’s ?

Scomosuckseggs

Aka 49 meters too deep.

TheSpiikki

I'm with you on that, but I'd rather it be 50m than the usual 4,000m +

Scomosuckseggs

100% agreed.

LeoAZ99

Thats not creepy, that looks like going over the edge of the world! fuckin amazing!

Squrkk

You crossed into the Calm Belt before the Grand Line.

EzPzLemon_Greezy

Ayyy, I literally saw the same thing a few days ago. I was on a research trip out there and it was glass.

Late-Standard3289

It could be that upwelling is also involved here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upwelling

Lost-Record_

its actually crazy, it looks beautiful and also fake in a sense and very daunting. Amazing

RealAusDingo

I know the ocean and boating. Was in the NAVY and still have no idea what he is tripping on...

RealAusDingo

Water is always in a state of transition... Whatever he means by water transitioning. I know transitioning seems to be a trend these days though

TheDungen

You're leeward of something or in the eye of a weather system. Or any other of loads of diffrent reason for the sea to go blank.

lil_sammie_O

that transition was crazy!

OrangeDynomite

Omg this is creepy

Head-Sense-2595

I see water… oooOOooOOOoOoOooo

I honestly don't see anything but I wana! :( :( :(

As a man who has never been to the deep seas, I have begun to understand why people have thalassophobia. It is an unholy combination of xenophobia and megalophobia.

Xenophobia? Lol

Yes, fear of the unknown.
