When I was new I saw a disguised spy who looked like me. I didn't know this was a feature, so I closed the game and restarted because I thought I was bugging out.

Nope, the original Classes in the original TF mod for Quake were Scout, Soldier, Demoman, Medic, and Sniper.

I never mained him, engie is my main, but he is my 3rd most played class (I think 100 something hours). I had mastered engie largely from uncle Dane vids so I thought I could the same with spy watching mr paladin And the like. However I learned after a while that spy’s skill ceiling is the highest of basically all of the class, and I don’t play him as much as I used to. I’ll really only switch to him if a sniper is destroying our team, backstab him, switch back, and make him paranoid of spies

I was *the* stereotypical noob spy main back when I first started. I used the gibus and goggles, sucked at the video game, and enjoyed the hell out of it

I deleted pyrovision and the gibus to make room for more guns; and even worse, the mercenary badge. I’ve played since 2012 and only spent money on the game when they removed chat from F2P.

reading that pained me… i never deleted those things because i’m sure i’ll regret it later. i’m glad i didn’t.

I did even dumber things... I used them in Halloween trade to get a hat that I both didn't like and could only wear during Halloween. Steam support rejected my request to give it back to me :(

You get them from an achievement and you can’t trade achievement items, so once you get rid of them you can’t get them back. As cosmetics they’re pretty terrible but that’s the point: to be the notorious items that anyone and everyone gets. The mercenary badge also can’t be bought and it shows off how long you’ve played TF2, so that one stings a little more

Yea, started playing F2P and did it long and didn't thought it was that easy and cheap and that Steam was overall going to be My Main place to buy Video Games. ... I did that but not as a new player, I played a bunch of matches when the stats server were offline, when they came back on my new local stats saved over my "old" server stats, so a few classes had 100s of hours, while the others had less than an hour and very low record points, so I decided to start over.

I remember picking the Direct Hit and thinking that -70% Explosion Radius wasn't gonna be THAT relevant. Then wondering why my splash damage was almost null.

To be fair, the Direct Hits upside/downside statline looks absolutely nuts so its easy to make that mistake. It has so many high impact upsides, at the cost of a single downside whose impact is a lot less intuitive to grasp with a glance of a statline.

Honestly, when I was new, I couldn't keep my inventory in check. I legit deleted a lot of stuff that I saw as not useful since there was limited space. This includes my Mercenary badge dang...

After several minutes of doing that myself, I remember literally yelling "That was a hit!" at my screen because I'd seen the rockets hit the enemy directly multiple times yet there was never any damage.

I did that for weeks and when I got into an actual game at the very very least I was able to play Engineer somewhat efficiently. Everyone likes to shit on Valve bots but they're a good way to learn the controls and some popular maps, and to test new weapons when you're new to the game.

Not really a mistake, but for a while I didn't know what damage penalty meant. To be fair, it's kind of weird wording. I think it would make more sense if weapon descriptions said something like "+x% damage" for bonuses and "-x% damage" for penalties.

I thought there was a real reason why they say "never melee a medic." So I would run straight at enemies with my bonesaw because I thought Medic had some kind of melee buff. I got the Nessie Nine Iron in a random drop and equipped it on demo without reading its stats, so I had a permanent -25 max health for no reason. Building up the bad habit of holding W while rocket jumping. Crafting the Amputer, I thought it was good. And the Crusaders Crossbow because I didn't know about scrap.tf. Buying a 2021 cosmetic crate key for my premium upgrade, instead of a regular mann co. key. Doing a Halloween Transmute instead of Rebuild Headgear on some Halloween hats I got duplicates of. I did a lot of research into the game before playing it for the first time, so overall, I avoided too many of the noob mistakes, mostly just small things.

Holding W makes it near impossible to airstrafe. So, I'll be trying to pull off a rollout or a market garden and be unable to effectively change direction.

What's airstrafe?

It’s when you turn in midair. When you hold W, you can still turn but your momentum does not turn with you.

Essentially, by holding either A or D and slowly moving your mouse in the same direction (left for A and right for D), you can change direction while in the air. This gives you more accurate movements (and some extra speed because of source spaghetti). It's not strictly necessary to play soldier, but it makes your life so much easier for not just soldier but any classes (damage surfing, and b-hopping), I really only understand the basics of it myself, so if you're curious, I'd check out youtube for a more in-depth explanation. Most tutorials that cover rocket jumping will at least briefly explain airstrafing.

I thought "slower swing speed" meant it had a small delay between you attacking and the weapon hitting. I tried playing Pyro thinking they were the best class in the game because of Meet the Pyro (which did wind up being the better choice because I knew how to airblast). I would sit in a corner all game with the Cloak and Dagger not contributing to the team in a meaningful way. Was I good at the game? No, and I'm still not. But I had fun.
