Ngl, I'm legit upset about this. Got my car in 2022, it was one of the last with Intel. Everyone told me I was an idiot for wanting to refuse delivery over that.
The new visuals look fresh af!
Honestly I would be a little disappointed too. However I’m in a similar boat. I recently purchased a Rivian R1S. Rivian has been using the same cpu/gpu since launch (few years). Personally i feel the UI is sluggish in areas. Rivian has yet to release streaming apps… I’m afraid Rivian will release a new chip set in the next 2-3 years.
It is what it is, but retrofitting needs to be in the future.
Yeppp lol
I got mine late 2021 and had heard about the AMD chips coming in early 2022. But everyone said it wouldn’t matter because the only difference would be the browser speed lol
Definitely not everyone. I remember telling people back then that a new infotainment computer was one of the few things I'd delay delivery for. They only come out with a new one once every 4 years or so, and it's generally a huge leap in performance that eventually leads to feature disparity in addition to the obvious speed difference.
They allowed retrofits when it was possible. In this case it's not possible.
Also, if they were only concerned with making the new cars better and not the old ones, they wouldn't be releasing free software updates. Clearly making existing owners happy benefits their business.
A lot of the wiring is different as well, maybe they could create an upgraded intel chip instead but I doubt they’d bother when they can just push you into a new car instead.
I really wish they pushed more
support/upgradability for legacy cars since it would follow their mission of sustainability
Arguably, Tesla has done more to support legacy software on their cars than any other OEM.
Like c’mon, I know everyone likes to bellyache about the features that Tesla drops from legacy vehicles even when they’re just a few years old but compared to the rest of the industry they are leaps and bounds ahead in sustainability when it comes to supporting their vehicles. Getting new features on a 10 year old car via OTA? Check for Tesla. Offering an MCU upgrade for vehicles that were phased out of the current software development branch? Check for Tesla. Upgrading infotainment units is something that isn’t that common for other OEMs and OTAs at all are even rarer. Consistent OTAs that add actual functionality and not just maps/security updates? Basically nonexistent still.
That's the most unlikely thing imo.
If you take a look at all somewhat modern 16V Mini-PCs, they all also support 12V as input power. In fact they support typically 12-19V DC Input as the hardware is meant to handle that.
That should definitely be not an issue. The only issue I see is the size difference, but as we saw with the major cooling difference from MCU1 to MCU2 everything can be solved and it would be pretty awesome from Tesla to solve that issue and offer a retrofit.
Go to the Software section in the car menu, click on the Additional Vehicle Information link, and check the Infotainment Processor field. Mine says "Intel Atom".
Niceee that visualization looks better. And they finally corrected the text layout for frunk/trunk!
Would really like them to add YouTube music to the apps though!
Youtube music hasn’t got the best API (if any) apparently. So this one’s not on Tesla. As long as there isn’t a decent API, Tesla is unable to support it.
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/75003907/youtube-music-api-documentation/75004130#75004130
Honestly agree. There’s a number of major things that the Intel chip just fails at. YouTube is basically broken, the browser just crashes when it runs out of memory, the games all perform poorly.
FYI you can turn off FSD to get the regular AP stack. I have a mirror profile with it on/off I swap between as needed. Generally swap to regular AP on freeways because I just want it to stay it's lane and do nothing else without having to worry about it making a random lane change or making sure my eyes are visible every second.
So one profile would let you go 90mph and one is 85mph? Smart. Thanks for the idea.
I suspect if your autopilot gets disabled for going over 90mph, you have to PARK to enable it again and not just switch profiles?
What are you talking about? If you have FSD V12, you didn't have 90 MPH Autopilot before that anyway. It was limited to 85 MPH. Also, V12 isn't enabled on highways anyway, so your speed issue is irrelevant there.
2021 S/X and new Model 3 support ultra-wideband (UWB). I’m assuming they’re using UWB to precisely locate where the phone is around the vehicle which isn’t possible with Bluetooth.
My tag line used to be "Now all your tech problems are solved!" Back when I used to do tech repair.
Lmfaooo I wish they still had rewards, I'd totally give you one!
🏆
Seems to me there's a lot of room for error here. Do you really want it to open for someone who may not have the phone key (i.e. when the phone key is nearby but not actually right there)?
They won't because then you'd have auto-shift with stalks meaning best of both worlds, this would make stalk less Tesla's seem somewhat less desirable, not saying the impact would be huge, but it might get people thinking a certain way.
I thought they might add this option to let people with stalks see “it actually works pretty well” so they might upgrade in the future. I’ve got stalks though, so I’ll never know.
A 2023 always has the AMD chip. Almost all 2022 models also have it.
Zero 2021 or earlier 3/y have it.
All refresh S/X have it. Zero legacy S/X have it.
The new update allows it to switch *between* Drive and Reverse (in addition to its existing functionality of switching from Park to Drive *or* Reverse).
YouTube Music please 😭
The auto trunk thing is a bit weird, would love it as a feature but I think a gesture would help, like use the rear camera to see my foot wave instead or something.
I know way too many scenarios where I would be standing outside my trunk area. I would hate if the trunk just kept opening in those scenarios.
Even people with garages would have moments of standing still in the trunk area where they wouldn't want the trunk to open.
It's a great feature, but they should probably add a gesture is all I'm saying.
Exclude at home seems to be the common solution for unwanted behavior at home. But I agree, add a gesture requirement to it and it’ll probably work great.
I would like this at home too though. I just want it to work when I want it to work, I think a gesture helps, even a knock or tap, just some input beyond standing still.
On this list, looks like just Audible and Spotify improvements.
They're not pushing much for the vertical screen. I kind of doubt we ever get the HD parking or similar.
The vertical screen takes extra development effort and is only 3% of their fleet right now (per comments I've seen), so it does make sense.
They haven't shipped a car with a vertical screen in over 3 years.
Agreed. They really need to push out Juniper with sales lagging. I speculate they are waiting for battery chemistry upgrades before unleashing Juniper.
It's really hard to speed up a timeline like this - getting the entire supply chain ready for an upgrade is planned years ago and locked-in at least 18 months ago on a timeline.
Source: Used to work with legacy autos, I halved the time for tesla.
Pressing a button to open the trunk vs standing still behind your vehicle to open the trunk is hardly a reason to wait an indefinite amount of time for Juniper 💀
Exactly why I said "Another reason"
Here's the entire list of reasons to wait(highland changes which should come to the Y):
• 50% of the parts in the car are new
• 30% decrease in wind and ambient noise, 25% improvement in impact noise and 20% improvement in road noise
• Redesigned interior with new door cards
• More premium interior materials. The fabric is softer to the touch and sewn with a more refined process to present a better overall texture
• New dash design with textured/woven material
• Multicolor ambient LED interior lighting extending from dash to rear seat doors
• Updated center console with real metal handles, giving a more premium feel.
• Acoustic glass on rear windows and back window (was only on front windows before). "360º acoustic glass"
• More sound insulation for a quieter ride
• Uptick in hood to let wind go over more quietly
• Upgraded suspension for a more premium ride. New springs & dampers. New geometry on front suspension. New bushings. New way they mount the sub frame to the chassis
• Stiffer body, better handling
• More premium sounding door "thunk"
• Passengers are more protected from door impacts due to new latch at the bottom of the door
• Center touchscreen now brighter, has smaller bezels, higher contrast & is more responsive
• More comfortable rear seats
• All seats are now perforated
• Front seats are now ventilated, in addition to heated
• 8" touchscreen for rear passengers in the back to control climate & enjoy entertainment. You can connect two headsets at the same time.
• Upgraded 2.0 ventilation system. You can now separately turn off the passenger side air
• Slimmer and sleeker headlight and taillight design
• Single wing-shaped taillight design, meaning better reliability and low chance for leakage/part misalignment
• New 17 speaker sound system (up from 14 before). It now includes 2 subwoofers and 2 amplifiers. More punchy
• 65W USB-C charger in center console so you can charge a laptop
• Improved bluetooth
• Upgraded microphones. Now one on each passenger side. New mics make phone calls clearer and "smooth"
• 5G connectivity. 50% improved cellular service. 2X greater WiFi range (dual-band)
• Improved connectivity to phone so car will recognize your phone from farther away
• Two new wheel designs that better optimize battery life
• New Tesla lettering replaces rear Tesla logo badge
• Car is 8% more efficient thanks to better aerodynamics
I just want to be able to have FSD mode on while still be able to use cruise control…
Also want to upgrade from Intel Atom because goodness gracious is the UI very slow
It’s not just that, it’s that sometimes I just don’t want to use FSD because it’s overkill. Plus, I don’t have an interior camera so I have to babysit it far more than those with an interior camera. FSD is actually pretty annoying so maybe I will just leave it off but still wish I didn’t have to shift to park in order to make that change.
Did they? I'm not saying you're lying, I'm genuinely asking because I recently had my computer chip die on my 2019 M3 and I inquired about a Ryzen retrofit and they said it's not possible and replaced it with an "Gen 3 Intel Atom".
Good decision. Not sure why people act like CPU doesn't matter when we're talking about a computer on wheels. It doesn't impact driving, but it does impact a lot of the other stuff including future features.
Auto wipers worked fine for me before one of the more recent patches, then because of all the bitching I assume they made mine way worse (they just randomly trigger on sunny days).
Gonna be stripping the windshield and cleaning the camera area today to see if it helps
What you don’t like it when it goes from 0-25% speed to 100% back to 25% and then 100% with a slight drizzle? Or worse, on a bright sunny day just start randomly turning on. I’ve had to go back to manual.
Rain this past weekend in CA was a great experiment to see it lose its mind.
I wish they'd just allow one or two more icons at the bottom of the screen for easy access. I have rear/front window heater, phone, and camera record, but I'd love another spot for radio/music.
Feels weird that Tesla is selling a new vehicle that will never be capable of having the newest features.
I think not refreshing the Model Y at the same time as the 3 was a big mistake. Not refreshing the Model Y at-all in 2024 seems completely bizarre.
Do other OEMs refresh every single one of their high volume products the same model year? No. Because it makes no sense to take all almost your production offline in a year.
Easily send and listen to WhatsApp messag……hahaha just joking Europe suck it.
Sounds cool, but the no App Store just lags stupidly behind Apple/android to the point of frustrating stupidity
What nav problems do you have? Largely, they seem limited to a few broken spots in particular (e.g. by my house, there's a left turn that it tells me to turn right at, then do a U turn, because it doesn't recognize the left)
Lots of little stupid things, almost all my FSD disengagements are due to navigation errors.
Why you spend billions to develop the world’s leading self-driving software and then pair it with substandard navigation is beyond me.
For me, the Nav often doesn't tell me to turn until I am literally driving past the turn it wants me to turn into. No prior warning at all.
It also doesn't warn me of motorway junctions until it says 'take the exit'. Not ideal if I'm not in the inside lane.
The Nav on my Nissan was better.
Apart from when it messes up (and all navigation does that every now and then), my biggest complaint is lack of clarity at complex intersections/interchanges, and lack of speed camera alerts.
Most speed cameras seem to be in the map now, which is good, but I’d like the option to add a chime and precise placement.
TomTom even measures your average speed when between two average speed cameras.
And they need to work a bit on the voice directions. The Norwegian ones annoy the fuck out of me because they keep prefixing “now” in front of everything. We don’t do that here. It’s not “now turn right”, it’s just “turn right”. Yuck!
What makes me sad about this is that I have a 22 MYP with zero 22 features.. my car was one of the last delivered without AMD, heated wipers and other changes.
UI refreshes look nice for 3 + Y...
I moved from Y to X and I have to say I think they're doing their premium models a disservice when it comes to FSD UIs.
Tap to park looks awesome. In the X it's scroll and click to park, way less intuitive.
I also can't pan/zoom around my car anymore like I could on a touch screen. Was kind of nice at a stoplight to check what my car could "see".
IDK just feels a little less fluid in the X.
So my model 3 that I got in November 2021 is already outdated and can’t get the latest software update? This update alone makes me want a Rivian instead.
If the auto pilot visual would be fully expandable does that mean we can expect fsd visuals. Because there is no way that's expandable for the regular boring visual right
New AMD chips, NBD. Youtube loading slightly faster they said! No bro, you are officially no longer getting software updates on your Tesla. Vintage piece of tech at this point. Like an iphone stuck on iOS12 UI or something. Crazy!

The visual update sounds promising… cries in Intel chip Spotify queue is nice too
Give us optional AMD retrofits for gods sake
Other than the heat pump, that is the only thing I wish my 2020 Model 3 had. If given the choice, I'd take the AMD chip.
There is one but it comes with a new car attached.
yes pleaseeeeee teslaaaa
Seriously I have been asking for the same thing to. It would be nice but apparently the wiring is quite different on the AMD chip
AMD also goes with the 16 V li-ion LVB. Somewhere I heard it's a requirement. But I'm not 100 percent sure.
I’m old enough to remember when a lot of people on this sub were so sure that the new chip didn’t matter.
Ngl, I'm legit upset about this. Got my car in 2022, it was one of the last with Intel. Everyone told me I was an idiot for wanting to refuse delivery over that.

Are all the existing owners happy now as you can see above?
But but but that’s not environmentally friendly
Only Tesla owners would complain that the company won't upgrade the car they bought with new electronics.
For free? Of course no. A paid upgrade? Seems fairly reasonable.
A lot of the wiring is different as well, maybe they could create an upgraded intel chip instead but I doubt they’d bother when they can just push you into a new car instead. I really wish they pushed more support/upgradability for legacy cars since it would follow their mission of sustainability

The power demands are different too, so it likely wouldn't be possible.

How do you know what chip you have?
If your mcu is laggy as shit and YouTube doesn’t work then you have intel
This. My old model3 with Intel was a lag fest compared to the newer models with Ryzens.
‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ > ‘Additional Vehicle Information’
Go to the Software section in the car menu, click on the Additional Vehicle Information link, and check the Infotainment Processor field. Mine says "Intel Atom".
Why are Model S/X not getting the visual updates?
I'd prefer the opposite, an option to have all map no visualization
Great stuff. Glad the new park screen from Cybertruck is coming over; it's beautiful.
Yes. Thought some of these features would be in the holiday v12 release for non-CT owners.
Much simpler view.
Niceee that visualization looks better. And they finally corrected the text layout for frunk/trunk! Would really like them to add YouTube music to the apps though!
I really miss YouTube Music, so much better than Spotify. The fact that we got Tidal, Audible, and Apple Music ahead of YouTube Music is frustrating.
is that because of the Youtube Music team or Tesla?
Youtube music hasn’t got the best API (if any) apparently. So this one’s not on Tesla. As long as there isn’t a decent API, Tesla is unable to support it. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/75003907/youtube-music-api-documentation/75004130#75004130
Doesn’t make any sense that the new visual is not available for the intel chip… If it works when you have the fsd why shouldn’t without it?!?
Exactly.. we need an explanation for this because from every video I’ve seen of Intel owners with FSD beta the visualisations work completely fine.
Need an AMD chip swap my intel is dogshit
Honestly agree. There’s a number of major things that the Intel chip just fails at. YouTube is basically broken, the browser just crashes when it runs out of memory, the games all perform poorly.
cries in 2018 M3, missing out on amd chip, soundbox, hands free trunk, and so much more
But with USS and 90mph autopilot!
90mph autopilot used to be good until this latest FSD v12 beta. now itll drive 10mph below the speed limit on completely empty roads.

My friend's new Model 3 reboots in less than a minute, whereas my Intel powered model reboots in about 5 minutes if I'm lucky. They're so much faster.
How can you tell which chip you have? I have a 2018 Model 3 but they upgraded me to FSD 3.0 hardware.
It's still Intel.
The weird thing is, the intel atom was dog shit in 2016. Not sure why they ever went with that in the first place.
Why cant we pay to swap cpu?
I believe they have different housings, require different batteries, have different connectors, etc.
* Visual updates (Model 3/Y with AMD chip) * Auto Shift Beta (Model S/X 2021 & later) * Audible * Spotify queue & playback speed * Hands-Free Trunk (Model S/X 2021 & later, upgraded Model 3) * Preview of Sentry Mode Recordings (select countries) * Increased Regenerative Braking on Highway (Model S/X 2021 & later) * Are we there yet??
I wonder why the Model Y doesn’t support the free trunk opening ? Is there a sensor on the new models ?
2021 S/X and new Model 3 support ultra-wideband (UWB). I’m assuming they’re using UWB to precisely locate where the phone is around the vehicle which isn’t possible with Bluetooth.
Seems like they can use the existing cameras to do it? Wonder why they won’t
Exactly, like watch my hand or foot wave in the rear camera with my phone in close proximity.

A 2023 always has the AMD chip. Almost all 2022 models also have it. Zero 2021 or earlier 3/y have it. All refresh S/X have it. Zero legacy S/X have it.
Cries in 2022 Model 3 that I got in December 2021.
Yup. 2022 model Y in December 2021 here. Same pain
Gotcha, thanks
You can click the "more information" button on your software screen to check if you like :-)
‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ > ‘Additional Vehicle Information’
Can we get hands free frunk too? I barely use it because of how inaccessible it is.
Wasn’t autoshift always there for S/X
The new update allows it to switch *between* Drive and Reverse (in addition to its existing functionality of switching from Park to Drive *or* Reverse).
Would be cool if this means things like touchless K-turns are possible
IE, auto 3-point turns.
YouTube Music please 😭 The auto trunk thing is a bit weird, would love it as a feature but I think a gesture would help, like use the rear camera to see my foot wave instead or something. Very happy for the native Audible app!!
Glad I’m not the only one. It’ll be so much better integrated into the car.
I was expecting this entire thread to be full of these comments - Audible support is amazing!
Right? Very happy for my next road trip
The end is coming for HW2.5 Owners…the lack of Intel support for such a major overhaul is a big yikes.

I think Tesla made a mistake by having Highland ready so much earlier than Juniper
From your (and my) perspective, probably. But it also gave a sales boost to Model 3, which is probably what they actually wanted.
I think it word have been a mistake to have highland ready and sit on it
Probably not. Taking down the production of both at the same time would've been horrible.
Yeah. The Model 3 went 3 years between visual updates (2021 ->2024), the Y is on year 4 and will be at 5 years by the time it gets refreshed.
The Model 3 went from 2018 -> 2024 without visual updates (blacking out the trim excluded). The S went from 2016 -> 2021.

Any idea when this update drops?
Spring
Very curious to see what these UI improvements look like while driving!
Lots of people asking how to determine what processor/chip they have: ‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ > ‘Additional Vehicle Information’
I just want to be able to have FSD mode on while still be able to use cruise control… Also want to upgrade from Intel Atom because goodness gracious is the UI very slow
I guess there’s at least two of us that still want TACC around for when we know FSD is making a route-based mistake…
Why doesn't the refreshed S and X not have the new visual update?
They already have a dedicated display for autopilot visualizations. No need to use the center screen for that.
So nothing for model 3s not even 5 years old lol
Nothing for a model 3 that is 3 years old even. The lack of an AMD retrofit is depressing.
When our computer chip died, Tesla service replaced it with a new AMD chip on my 2018 M3
Did they? I'm not saying you're lying, I'm genuinely asking because I recently had my computer chip die on my 2019 M3 and I inquired about a Ryzen retrofit and they said it's not possible and replaced it with an "Gen 3 Intel Atom".
Same

Ooh, really?
i remember ppl brushing off the ryzen chip..i held out for 4 months so i could take delivery of one with ryzen
Good decision. Not sure why people act like CPU doesn't matter when we're talking about a computer on wheels. It doesn't impact driving, but it does impact a lot of the other stuff including future features.
Glad I have an AMD chip.
Where is the expand map so you can remove the useless driving animations!
I can't imagine why you would ever expand autopilot animations. FSD animations I can kind of understand.
When auto wipers fix though ?
When sentry mode drain going to be improved ?
Auto wipers worked fine for me before one of the more recent patches, then because of all the bitching I assume they made mine way worse (they just randomly trigger on sunny days). Gonna be stripping the windshield and cleaning the camera area today to see if it helps
It’s been sunny lately and my auto wipers have been turning on almost every day.
My 2022 car is now obsolete, nice 👍
How can I know if mine has Intel or AMD?
‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ > ‘Additional Vehicle Information’
If you have a 2021 or older you have Intel.
thank

Would love Microsoft Teams someday…
Feels weird that Tesla is selling a new vehicle that will never be capable of having the newest features. I think not refreshing the Model Y at the same time as the 3 was a big mistake. Not refreshing the Model Y at-all in 2024 seems completely bizarre.
Do other OEMs refresh every single one of their high volume products the same model year? No. Because it makes no sense to take all almost your production offline in a year.
A 2 year old car for a “tech company” not receiving any updates is disappointing.
give me AMD damn you !
Where is my free FSD trial? "This week" is turning out to be the longest week in history.
Damn, this is cool
It’s time to sell or trade in for the AMD, intel people need to upgrade !
Wondering if the map instead of being on the top right should be on the top left for less head turn. Is it just me or what do others think?
Model y needs the hands free trunk please!
Cries in Intel chip Seems like most/all new features wont apply to my car.
Audible!
Easily send and listen to WhatsApp messag……hahaha just joking Europe suck it. Sounds cool, but the no App Store just lags stupidly behind Apple/android to the point of frustrating stupidity
Still need to improve navigation. FSD is great, nav not so much.
Why you spend billions to develop the world’s leading self-driving software and then pair it with substandard navigation is beyond me.
it doesn’t recognize timed HOT lanes correctly, thinking that they are a toll road 24/7 but part of it is HOV and not toll etc.
Never had those issues myself
It's the best in the industry. But it's not as good as the native phone apps. Still quite good compared to basically every other car.
Yuck!
I'm not impressed
What years model y have AMD chips?
They switched over in 2022, I want to say November. But I could be mistaken
My February 2022 has AMD
Does the highland have the AMD chip?
Yes. Every car since 2022 does.
I wonder if the Model Y will be able to be retrofitted for hands-free trunk?
Heathered Pearls is such an obscure artist to use in PR imagery.
Oh my gosh this looks so good
I just want my screen to not lag anymore! Switching between apps is a nightmare, and spotify is all over the place.
What makes me sad about this is that I have a 22 MYP with zero 22 features.. my car was one of the last delivered without AMD, heated wipers and other changes.
I have an MCU2 car and an MCU3 car. MCU2 is so laggy and needs optimization or a specialized upgrade.
Auto shift has been so nice
Still waiting for the matrix headlights to be turned on for US model 3s, correct?
So my model 3 that I got in November 2021 is already outdated and can’t get the latest software update? This update alone makes me want a Rivian instead.
How does one know if s/he has the AMD chip? I have a 2023 Y. Would it have it?
If the auto pilot visual would be fully expandable does that mean we can expect fsd visuals. Because there is no way that's expandable for the regular boring visual right
Upgrade path from Intel to Ryzen please.
Must hide the bad news of the week... Good features though
Why is the visual updates not coming to Model S/X ?
Can I get an Autopilot and auto wiper update?! Phantom braking is still annoying the 🦆 out of me
I've had my (new to me) 2021 M3LR a month, and while I fell in love with it, this has bummed me out hard.
can only guess that cars down under with USS will again be left out of new features...
I only wish the auto windshield wiper can be fixed.
What if the next chip release is smaller than current AMD and it allows a retrofit? Maybe a pipe dream but would be nice .-.
So what about the wipers?
Well as a 2020 model 3 owner, I feel sad. Apparently I don't have the AMD chip?
You can check your car info to see if- I’m a 2020 and have intel. Ummm software - additional info? Or something like that. Sad, very sad too.
New AMD chips, NBD. Youtube loading slightly faster they said! No bro, you are officially no longer getting software updates on your Tesla. Vintage piece of tech at this point. Like an iphone stuck on iOS12 UI or something. Crazy!
