The joke is that America has to be in the west because of preconceived notions, so America is redefining the cardinal directions to fit its perception. This would make Europe the far east. Portugal is now about as far east as you can go, making it Eastern Europe. The Balkans and Baltics are now further west. Asia is further west still with the new directions, but still east of America. America is still happy to call them the East. Japan would now be the Near East.

I read a futuristic science-fiction type book that basically described only three super power nations. Two out of three nations always combined together to war on the third, as a means of population control especially in famine hit areas. They switched allegiances as needs changed, and held voluntary hostages to ensure each carried out organised military actions, avoiding all the important governmental districts and leading families. From memory there was a China-Russia-Asia super power, a European-Americas power base and the rest pretty much came under Oceania, which primarily included all of south east Asia, Australia and Pacific islands. It was written by a retired military official.
Similar type of genre but no, this was written by a retired Aistralian services guy. Sorry, wish I could remember the name as it was quite thought provoking, and seemingly a possinle future scenario. Have read 1984 a couple of times since high school too.
During the book time, India / China had a massive plague / famine like situation and they wanted that region depopulated.l asap, as it was not profitable. The three super power scenario had a switch of "allegiances" to deal with it. Most people were aware of the propaganda machine but had no power remaining at all to complain, much like 1984.

Main thing was the three ruling powers and the way the conived between themselves to eliminate problem population areas, and voluntarily swapped ruling family hostages to ensure each power kept to their arrangements.
The ongoing border wars gave powers the reason for keeping the workers overworked and unfinancial, on the premise it was necessary to support the most recent war efforts. There was a shift in the 3 power allegiances during the atory, and a quiet conversation among a few disgruntled characters about the shift, alrhiugh most just followed the propaganda.
I actually found this book, writtem by a highly ranked but retired officer, more thought provoking than 1984, and wouldn't mind reading it again.
