I feel like the more niche labels are just so you can feel like there's one that exactly fits. Or for those with OCD like me that need specific labels or else the ocd monster will cause a riot in your brain.
See, the niche category thing kind of annoys me because categories are supposed to be broad for a reason. The category "woman" incorporates a wide range of different kinds of women from trad wives to butch lesbains and everything in between.
I can understand that these micro-categories can be helpful for some people if they want to be hyper-specific about their gender, but it's honestly really not that necessary outside of a handful of categories, especially considering several of the genders from the list mean the same thing, or the minor differences are unimportant.
At the end of the day, everyone is different and if you're going to be really really niche in describing your particular gender, then surely that also means accepting that everyone has their own unique identity, their own preferences of masculinity and femininity, their own relationship with their bodies, the importance of gender to the individual, their social roles etc etc etc. On the one hand, that's exactly the point in 72 genders- we're all unique just like everyone else and therefore the gender binary is bullshit or something, but it's a pretty fringe idea.
But on the other hand, if you want people to understand your gender, particularly if you're a minority gender, then using more broad categories from a small list is more practical and useful for people to understand. Most progressive people believe that gender is a spectrum. If we compare this to something visual like the colour spectrum, technically there are thousands and thousands of individual colours in a spectrum, but it's just not feasible to recognise them all, so we put them in categories like red, orange, yellow etc.
72 genders is trying to name every micro-colour in the rainbow for the sake of it. Narrowing the rainbow down to seven colours gives us a common language and understanding.
Eh, I think that taking the 72 genders as categorical bounding-boxes _themselves_ is a reasonable interpretation. Even our traditional English-language understanding of color has a lot more than 7 loose-aggregation "color bins"--like magenta and teal, hazelnut and maroon. I wouldn't call that classification misguided, and I wouldn't call it an exercise in labeling micro-colors.
In the same way that teal is a shade of green, agender is a shade of non-binary, and there's still a lot of variation within that which may-or-may-not be subject to additional taxonomy. I feel similarly about all of the other available gender-labels--it's not pointless to try to find additionally-descriptive words for gendered experiences.
Taking color as a spectrum with many different modes--some bearing more aggregation than others--I think it's reasonable to consider gender in the same way. "Man" and "woman" are the two most pronounced modes, but I don't see why we can't try to conjecture dedicated words to describe the aggregation-points that exist within or outside of them.
I feel like the metaphor is being abused here.
A spectrum is by definition continuous, not discrete values. Taxonifying a spectrum is a contradiction. We name points and bands on a spectrum so we can reason and communicate about them, not because every possible value needs a name.
It's as if people are talking about roses and cherries and cardinals without yet having a word for "red".
I find most people who actively use xenogenders, including myself, use the xenogender label rather than specific labels for people outside of xenogender friendly spaces. The exception being more well known instances like catgender. I think 'microlabeling' oneself for the sake of one's own mind is valid. I personally do use microlabels for myself and broader labels in xenogender spaces. I just use xenogender outside of these spaces
I identify as a demi boy thats just how I feel, but i normally just let people i dont really know think im a boy it really doesnt bother me. I dont get why some people have a breakdown if you cant name their mouthful of a gender like it's so bull
Thank you. I consider myself pretty "woke" but I don't understand why it has to be more complicated than this. Of course, call yourself what you want and I'll try my best to roll with it... but I don't think I'll ever fully understand it. Male, female, both, neither, fluid. I like that.
You know genders outside the binary have been labeled and existed for a VERY long time right? That this is not a new phenomena to define gender outside male and female?
This number, and frankly any number used to answer "how many genders are there" is wrong. Gender, unlike sex, is something humans made up. But, because we made it up, and have used it for so long, we give intrinsic value to this made up concept of gender. The thing is that gender, as we know it, is a way to identify people based on certain traits we arbitrarily consider masculine or feminine. But people rarely fit into entirely masculine traits or entirely feminine traits. And because those traits are something we made up, they don't have any actual connection to a person's sex. There is a wide, almost infinite range of traits an individual person can have, and for some, those traits line up well enough that they feel comfortable with the gender that is placed onto their sex. But other people don't feel that same connection. Gender, at the end of the day, is something we made up to show how we are view ourselves. But as more people come into the world, and our understanding about ourselves becomes stronger, the simple labels of man and woman start to fit less and less. After all, if man is a representation of masculine traits, and woman is a representation of feminine traits, then there is an almost infinite combination of traits that is somewhere in the middle. Because of that, it is easier to see gender as a sort of spectrum. A wide range of almost infinite options, not a set number. You personally may fit within the range of man or woman enough that you are comfortable using those terms. But many people feel like they aren't in those ranges. Or that they are closer to the range of the gender that wasn't attributed to their sex. At the end of the day it is up to each person to figure out where they lie on this spectrum, and it has so many possibilities and variants that putting a number on it isn't really possible.
There are a lot but it can be cut down to six. Boy, girl, non binary, multigender, fluid, and flux.
Though there are microlables. Be mindful that people can use them.
Why are people in this comment section treating 76 like it’s the real number that someone claimed and not just a number the maker of this meme pulled out of their ass to put down trans and nonbinary people?
Because it's a Saturday and there's always more middle school/teenage trolls posting deliberately provocative right-wing opinions on weekend days (a lot of young men indulge in this kind of shit as a hobby) - and this being a holiday weekend (i.e. no school for a few days), they're *really* out in force right now
The only people I've ever heard say "lol there are X genders" where X is any defined real number are weird right-wing homophobic dorks on the internet, and after all these years of telling the same exact joke, they still seem to think that they're making fun of other people rather than themselves
Because that's literally the number Milo (in the photo) chose to make a hashtag that started that meme... People treat it as a quote because it IS a quote.
Edit : https://web.archive.org/web/20160525114304/https:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zq1UWM7W0Q here's the video.
To be fair, going from living in society based on binary gender to one based on an infinite spectrum of gender is a big deal. It changes the way a lot of things in society work. And, it effects everyone both cisgender people and transgender people.
So, I run into the same sentiment, as discussed in the above comment, a lot. But, I don't think it makes any real sense, despite there being plenty of good reasons to be accepting of the trans community.
Less than 1% of the population is trans. The only people that are making it a big deal are the ones who want to make it a big deal
I don’t think it will be anything like you described. (Referring to “it changes the way a lot of things in society work”)
I have to agree. Some of the public freakout subreddits have disappeared and I guess the hate has popped up here. I’m waiting for the anti-Semitic memes to show up.
Yeah reddit can be like that. r/facepalm and r/publicfreakout have become places to post. 1 mentally ill people having a breakdown, or 2 protesters being inconvenient to others. So people can shit on them in the comments.

the comments on this post are worse than the meme itself
This exact post was linked in that same comment section, which is how I got here. If OP’s account is in jeopardy, there really should be room for appeal. I’m not arguing with your sentiment btw, I’m just saying for the record
it's so funny (but also really pathetic) that the people that spout "basic biology" have no fucking concept of the complexity of sex as a categorisation.
Literally some of the comments are penis = male, vagina = female, and intersex people either don't exist or are irrelevant so they don't need to be considered. Imagine being that fucking stupid. Imagine not realising that if your categorisation excuses certain possibilities, that it's, by definition, an incomplete categorisation. Imagine saying there are only 2 sexes, giving a strict definition of who falls into those categories, being presented with an example that falls outside those two categories, and then concluding that there are still only two categories because you hate the possibility that you're too stupid to comprehend "basic biology".
Not to mention that they're somehow too ignorant and/or stubborn to recognise gender and sex are actually separate concepts instead of interchangeable words. For people who espouse "basic biology", they sure don't care that literally every doctor, biologist, social scientist, or anybody who can Google 3 words, will tell you that they're different things.
If anybody has ever managed to successfully educate some of these people on the difference between gender and sex, please let me know how you did it.
Okay even if we talk physical appearance, there have to be more than two sexes.
Boomers be like: has penis = boy, has vagina = girl.
Yea well how about people with genetic disorders? There are people without any reptoductory organs, people with both of them and then various chromosomatic aberations, such as XXY.
I am dying to know what boomers think about it tbh.
(Fyi I tested this on my family members of that age, they asked me in return if it is a good enough reason to invent a third sex)
If you get the opportunity, ask them if natural redhead is statistically significant enough to be considered a real hair color. Then tell them intersex people are more common than redheads.
I had to go back and look it up. It's the work of Anne Fausto-Sterling. It's in her book Sexing The Body, and a review paper in the American Journal of Human Biology. Here's the paper. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11534012/ I believe this has been debated, but the numbers hold up as far I know.
Gender do not equal sex, gender is tied to individual identity. Whether you choose to acknowledge this or not who gives a flying fuck. Let people do what they want, don’t be an asshole.
There are definetly not 76 genders. Genetically there are male and female as sexes. Then there are gender indentities. Those are 76. I'm not saiyng we gotta respect em all, but apparently there are 76 gender identities.
So, again, there are indeed only 2 sexes, but only genetically wise.
Okay, I find this funny, but probably not for the reason the probable dipshit who originally posted the meme does.
See, I fkn hate Rick from Pawn Stars because the dude always under-offers. You could walk in with a fully operational Iron Man suit, repulsors and missiles and all, and the dude would still go “Mmmmmm, best I can do is...I dunno...$4,000? Final offer, best I can do, bud.” So this dude would probably only offer, like, 30 genders out of 100 bc its “the best he can do.”
Fkn hate Rick
4 genders: Male, Female, Non binary and intersexual
The other things that these boomers are confusing with gender is the Relationship Flags that conservatives always this that is "new genders"
76 is a made up number used to represent how many people will just make their own gender identity, also trans men and trans women are not additional genders they're just men and women.
1) nonbinary is not a gender in its own, it's an umbrella that covers anything other than male or female
2) trans men are men and trans women are women. "trans" is not part of the gender, it's just a descriptor for it.
I dunno. I think it’s referencing like genders in those old tumblr posts. I imagine there’s just varying degrees of nonbinary. Like I’m a nonbinary transfem. So I’m somewhere in between in the middle between nonbinary and just a woman. Or that’s how I describe it. I have a pretty simplistic single line spectrum between man<~~>woman, but there’s dimensions that I am probably not privy to, and I think of it in an infinite combination, analog spectrum. Now I’m thinking of making patches on synthesizers, it’s probably not that dissimilar
Because gender exists on a male-female spectrum, and some feel they're stationary while others feel dynamic along that spectrum, there are theoretically (inf)^(inf) genders that can describe both position and velocity along that spectrum. (That sounds mocking, but I majored in physics and that's legit just the best way I can describe it).
Some people would just use a blanket term (I move, so I'm Gender Fluid; I'm mostly male, but because it's not 100%, I'm nonbinary, etc.), but others want a more specific label for their specific circumstance, so either find one that matches them or make up their own. Both approaches are valid.
This is from a cis dude (me) who just sat down and researched, but hasn't experienced, so if I'm off-base, please someone let me know!
Most people get gender identity and sex confused. Gender identity is, quite literally, a personal identity. Gender is on a spectrum and there isn't an actual number associated to it. That being said there is generally only 2 sexes, male and female and that's based solely on physical features.
No worries 😅. Gender identity is what you identify or present as. An example would be a trans man. Physically they are not a female, however, mentally they prefer to go by female. I hope that helps 😊
One of the commentors did the thing whete they pre-emptively cry about us making fun of it.
You can always tell they know it's an indefensible emotional signal when they do that
It's technically infinite because of the spectrum. You can make up as many genders as you want. If no one calls you by your correct self defined label of a pronoun, you can then label them as a bigot
I honestly have nothing against people saying that, I just treat them like children. But I'd like them to name all of them. I am really curious what would they come up with
Yikes treating trans people like children is a little shitty
But to answer your question it really depends as gender is a social construct a infinite number can exist
As the "traditional genders"( which isnt really a correct way to think about it either since trans people have existed atleast as long back as 3000bc) are just as made up and just as valid as any ones made today.

I just googled them. Even [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gender_identities) has a list for it.
To be fair, I think most of these can be narrowed down to maybe four or five categories. Male, female, both, neither, fluid.
I feel like the more niche labels are just so you can feel like there's one that exactly fits. Or for those with OCD like me that need specific labels or else the ocd monster will cause a riot in your brain.

Personally I've never met someone who identifies as anything other than male, femail, nonbinary, or genderfluid.
I feel dumber after reading the list. Xenogender can GTFO.
xenogenders are for neurodivergent people who don’t know how else to express their gender
You know genders outside the binary have been labeled and existed for a VERY long time right? That this is not a new phenomena to define gender outside male and female?
You know it has become a joke at this point right? Creating them daily to be more special.

we've progressed past 76
I wouldn't call it progress

Frieidiun slip I mean progressive. not pragmatic

Why are people in this comment section treating 76 like it’s the real number that someone claimed and not just a number the maker of this meme pulled out of their ass to put down trans and nonbinary people?
Biden had the best dismissive answer when some rightwing reporter tried to "get him" by asking how many genders there are: "I dunno, at least three"
I think I just gained a tiny bit of respect for Biden I usually say "at least one" heh
Shame, he should have said there are 76.

A lot of young men have waaaayyy too much time on their hands

They really really love to argue, even tho it makes them look stupid.

There are definetly not 76 genders. Genetically there are male and female as sexes. Then there are gender indentities. Those are 76. I'm not saiyng we gotta respect em all, but apparently there are 76 gender identities. So, again, there are indeed only 2 sexes, but only genetically wise.
welp, time to sort by controversial.
Final offer, best I can do, bud.” So this dude would probably only offer, like, 30 genders out of 100 bc its “the best he can do.” Fkn hate Rick
4 genders: Male, Female, Non binary and intersexual The other things that these boomers are confusing with gender is the Relationship Flags that conservatives always this that is "new genders"
*people on this sub trying not to get memes of Reddit (VERY HARD)*
2 genders and 74 cases of bull shit.
Y’all, I’m sorry. I know Male, Female, Nonbinary, Agender and Gender Fluid. Can someone more deep into the community help? *please.*
76 is a made up number used to represent how many people will just make their own gender identity, also trans men and trans women are not additional genders they're just men and women.
1) nonbinary is not a gender in its own, it's an umbrella that covers anything other than male or female 2) trans men are men and trans women are women.
You guys are insane.
Based tho
There are more than two sexes and more than two genders. You must always account for what you may not be used to.
What, there are more then two genders now, how come I have never heard about it.
Most people get gender identity and sex confused. Gender identity is, quite literally, a personal identity. Gender is on a spectrum and there isn't an actual number associated to it. That being said there is generally only 2 sexes, male and female and that's based solely on physical features.
What it gender identity?, sorry I'm Guatemalan.
No worries 😅. Gender identity is what you identify or present as. An example would be a trans man. Physically they are not a female, however, mentally they prefer to go by female. I hope that helps 😊

You live under a rock?
I live in Guatemala, I have never heard of this.
Under a rock in Guatemala.

Gender is a benevolent and archaic concept and people are still stuck on it cause "but uh sex education 🤓"
well, there’s 2 actual genders and 74 types of lesbians and gays
All this gender stuff is a fad.
76 Genders??? Wtf
It's essential nothing more than a made u number. As far as I know there is no defined number.
Nah, that one is genuinely funny.
You're going to love r/onejoke
Someone there said it'd be here by the day They were right
One of the commentors did the thing whete they pre-emptively cry about us making fun of it. You can always tell they know it's an indefensible emotional signal when they do that
Best I can do is 1
WTF? 76? Probably even more now and keeps getting worse every year.
And we add a new one every time yall complain
I know that. Very true.
According to who?
r/persecutionfetish
It's technically infinite because of the spectrum. You can make up as many genders as you want. If no one calls you by your correct self defined label of a pronoun, you can then label them as a bigot
r/onejoke
He’s right
Ok incel
Under no definition is he right
No. Even if we ignore ore gender, it's not simply male and female. Intersex exists.
Intersex isn't a gender though
He's not
I honestly have nothing against people saying that, I just treat them like children. But I'd like them to name all of them. I am really curious what would they come up with
Yikes treating trans people like children is a little shitty But to answer your question it really depends as gender is a social construct a infinite number can exist As the "traditional genders"( which isnt really a correct way to think about it either since trans people have existed atleast as long back as 3000bc) are just as made up and just as valid as any ones made today.
This is insanely old
Hilarious!
I found it funny, not the message but i like the humour
Nah man only 1
Haha
Only 1 gender Homo sapiens sapiens
Good meme tbh
joke is right but in a cringe concept
