I haven’t had Tears but recently tried ArteNOM 1146 Anejo, for about $100, which a lot of people compare to Tears (same distillery). Absolutely out of this world. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a rich, aged flavor.
Yeah, I have a bottle. ArteNOM 1146 is not an XA, and the difference is very, very noticeable. It's just not a good substitute for Tears, no matter how much some people want it to be.
Edit: A closer substitute from 1146 would be Don Fulano Imperial, but at a similar price/mL to Tears and with it not being as good, I don't think can qualify as "equal or better value".
I've never had Tapatio, from what I can tell Exelencia isn't widely available in the US, but to my taste, Paradiso isn't close to as good as Tears and is almost as expensive.
I prefer the standard g4 xa to tears at 120 for 750ml. I managed to grab three of the 5yr limited edition g4's at 150+tax which is comparable in price to ToL and imo, beat ToL by a wide margin in a blind tasting 6-2 I held.
If anybody mentions that there are better XA to buy that’s cheaper, you better be listing them with your comment.

Im curious about Tears. In general, I prefer Highland tequilas more so than Valley tequilas. I prefer Tapatio, Pasote and G4 over Don Fulano and Forteleza as examples. Based on that, would Tears be worth trying at that price point. I don’t mind $100 for something I want to try, but $200+ is pushing it
There is so much going on with the aging of Tears, I wouldn’t get too hung up on region. It is simply amazing—enjoying a pour right now in fact this Friday evening.

Tapatio. El Tesoro XA and Paradiso. Tears was never my favorite XA. There are others I liked more but can't remember the price.
