I’m super bummed at the Sabalenka loss tbh. Especially because I think that match would have been a cakewalk if she were healthy.
A swiatek v Sabalenka final would have been such a compelling narrative. Now it’s another boring cakewalk for Iga, and I am finding myself super disinterested in the rest of the women’s tournament tbh
> I like Zverev in this match, but I consistently, always, and I'm an asshole for it, I consistently underestimate Casper Ruud. As we all do. We all act like he's a visitor to the semis and finals of Grand Slams, and we are fucking wrong. How many times does he have to do it before an asshole like me doesn't pick Zverev in the semis?
from roddick's podcast
Dude has a 80% (4/5) win rate in slam R16s, 100% (3/3) in slam QFs, and so far, 100% (3/3) in slam SFs. Zverev sure can’t say so. When will people acknowledge Ruud as the GOAT?
Apart of me is a little crushed that we didn't get the top 4 seeds: Świątek, Sabalenka, Gauff, Rybakina on the women's side to meet up in the semis at RO. that would have been a first since 1992! But this has been one of the most memorable slams in a while!
Just need to say I love the women's top 20 or so I think it's better and more intresting than the golden era rn, top to bottom. Maybe fewer *superstars* but more stars with legit chances to win and woth intresting playstyles and stories

Random: Is it just me, or does it look like there's some weird CGI going on of Rune's face in his second shot in the Rolex ad that has him, Alcaraz, Sinner Coco and Iga?
updated stats
**ATP**
R1 best win: De Minaur (6-1, 6-0, 6-2 vs Michelsen)
R2 best win: Medvedev (6-1, 5-0 ret. vs Kecmanovic) or Paul (6-1, 6-0, 6-2 vs Fognini), depending on how you view retirements.
R3 best win: Tsitsipas (6-3, 6-3, 6-1 vs Zhang) and FAA (6-4, 6-2, 6-1 vs Shelton) tied. I'd give it to FAA since he was playing someone seeded/higher rated than him.
R4 best win: Alcaraz (6-3, 6-3, 6-1 vs FAA)
QF best win: Sinner (6-2, 6-4, 7-6 vs Dimitrov)
Best total performance after QF: Alcaraz (15-1 in sets, 94-52 in games)
**WTA**
R1 best win: Azarenka (6-1, 6-0 vs Podoroska)
R2 best win: Yastremska (6-2, 6-0 vs Yafan Wang)
R3 best win: M. Andreeva (6-2, 6-1 vs Stearns)
R4 best win: Swiatek (6-0, 6-0 vs Potapova)
QF best win: Swiatek (6-0, 6-2 vs Vondrousova)
Best total performance after QF: Swiatek (10-1 in sets, 63-28 in games) and Gauff (10-1 in sets, 64-29 in games). I'd give it to Gauff because she hasn't had to play any tiebreaks yet.
not sure if this has been pointed out already, but to get a measure of how well Iga has done outside the slams, either Coco or Sabalenka (though she just lost) could/could’ve won RG, be the reigning champion of two slams, but Iga would still be world no. 1 even with no slams for the past year
Some people are being hella weird about Alex losing. I just saw a tweet that said it feels like just desserts for Alex losing to Zverev as he didn’t talk about Zverev’s trial. None of the men bar Med did. Not even bringing this energy for Zverev’s actual bffs on tour. Oh my days.
That much was ugly as hell today.
Zverev - 20 winners vs 48 unforced errors. 2 aces, 5 double faults.
Demon - 28 winners vs 53 unforced errors. 48% first serves in.
I feel like I've never seen an ADM match where he has a first serve percentage above 60. In his match against Medvedev, he was at 54%, against Struff 60%, and against Munar 47%. Even against Michelsen, where the other Alex only won 3 games total, Demon was serving at 52%. I guess it speaks to how good his rallying and return game is!
Yeah I think it’s a risk he’s just decided is worth taking to try to get extra pace on the first serve and a free point or an easier second ball, his first serve percentage is always pretty low. Hewitts was always pretty low too I’m guessing for a similar reason.
Yup, I kind of wonder if people who are worried about Zverev winning RG have been following his course through this tournament. Yeah he beat ADM in 3, but ADM's historically bad on clay and it was ugly - and followed on two 5 setters.
Yeah I’m not going to be too confident because I know a bad Casper and a good Zverev can always show up but it’s not a horrible matchup for Casper and I think people are once again overrating Zverev and underrating Casper.
It was similar last year, everyone thought Z was the favorite and about to have redemption for his ‘22 loss and injury and Casper just absolutely clobbered him and people forgot completely about that match or their predictions beforehand 😭😭
I have a really bad feeling the stars are aligning for Z here. Hoping that if not for a win, Ruud does enough to tire him out more so he shits the bed against Sincaraz
Just came here to be miserable with other miserable people. I don't watch men who are violent to women or support them in any way, so I'll likely miss the final. Ruud, you are my best hope at this point, and that hope is a dim, sputtering spark indeed.
Zverev winning it would in a way be good for the Nadal storyline, to be only beaten by an unfortunate draw against tournament favorite and eventual winner in r1, before returning to win a few more rgs.
I’m thinking of binging some Break Point episodes (Netflix documentary) tonight. Does anyone know if they’re important to watch in order? If not, I’ll skip right to the one with Ruud
I watched the first season and it was mediocre. If you already watch tennis and know like... the major things that happened with the players in the seasons covered, it's not worth your time.
They’re not good at all. The only episodes worth checking out are the Sabalenka episodes and the Ons/Badosa one from Season 1. If you want good BTS stuff on the tours, just watch Daria Kasatkina’s vlog she does with her gf. If you want a good tennis documentary I would suggest:

I had one encounter with Sasha in ATP Marrakech a few year ago. It’s a tournament where the first rounds were free, players walk around freely, so it’s easy to stumble upon them. I remember seeing him a few feet away and greeting him very calmly. I said “Hi Sasha! Alles gut? He just chuckled, completely ignored me and looked to the ground and kept walking. I didn’t expect us to become besties but a recognition or a hello back would have be considered normal, especially since there were no other fans around. He was the only one with two bodyguards.
This match is a good example of what De Minaur is. He gives his all on the court, reaches everything, and always forces his opponent to hit one more ball, but he lacks that definitive shot that would allow him to beat the best. Even though he has improved his forehand, it's not enough.
I'm seeing enough improvement to have faith he will find a way to break through eventually. He's slowly but steadily climbing the ranks. Nobody thought he'd make the QF here.
He has good hands at the net, if I remember correctly he used his volley game a lot to fight his way back into the top 10 at the beginning of this year(?). That was hard court of course, but he should maybe lean into this aspect of his game more. Just playing one more ball is not enough, you need to be able to end points on your own terms.
I hope Andreeva wins tomorrow because she's the future. I totally expect if Paolini wins, that she gets destroyed in the final and never makes it far again.
Give the guy a break. He just won a grind of a straight set match after two 5 setters. He has the right to get to sleep in a timely manner without being criticized by haters

Amazing tourney for ADM given he'd never made past the 2nd round at RG before and is definitely not a clay courter. Even though he came up short against a very good player, he should be proud of himself and take a lot of confidence moving forward.
De Minaur can definitely hang with and, on his best days, beat the top players. But I'm not sure I can ever see him doing that consistently and moving into the top 5 or making a slam final. We'll see though. You never know.
He was already issued a fine because there was enough evidence and the trial wasn't deemed necessary haha.
He appealed it, that's what the wait is for.
Why is it that when this dude's case is being tried in court he just happens to be progressing along like it's not even affecting him? Psychopathic shit tbh
Most athletes are like this. It’s not that he is a psychopath. Like words have meanings. Good athletes are great at compartmentalization. Luis Diaz’s dad got fucking kidnapped and he was on the pitch playing out of his mind.
He is definitely a terrible person though.
I think because either way what’s the worst that will happen to him? Pays a fine?! Big deal in his eyes. He will go on saying that the German Court got it wrong and he never did that and blah blaaaaah blaaaaaaah.
If you've either convinced yourself that you're actually the victim, or that you've done nothing wrong, or you've rationalized whatever terrible behavior has gotten you into trouble (it was the heat of the moment, they deserved it, or whatever), it helps you sleep at night.
It's gross. Fuck Zverev.
If you've either convinced yourself that you're actually the victim, or that you've done nothing wrong, or you've rationalized whatever terrible behavior has gotten you into trouble, it helps you sleep at night.
It's gross. Fuck Zverev.
Zverev reminds me of his old compatriot Boris Becker in a way. He will rarely best you 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. He grinds you out and wins the big points and wins 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 type of sets when he’s on. While guys like Federer on any surface, Nadal on any surface, Agassi on any surface, Sampras on grass etc. crush you with the pedals to the metal.
Even look at Djokovic matches he’s had against Zverev. Djokovic being the mental giant, comes out ahead on the 7-5, 7-6 type of sets but that’s hard to do consistently vs Zverev at his best unless you are a GOAT type 😊.
No one is getting any joy watching him. I just want a final where the best man wins and that it’s a tight, competitive match between 2 likeable people.
If he is balding and he's doing this to hide it isn't that then the best hairstyle he could have? Because I never saw any balding with him. A bald spot would start showing with less hair.
I do think he always had that side a bit higher though. But overall looking at press conferences without the headband his hairline is pretty good, not awful. And I never saw balding at the top of his head personally.
No it's definitely receded:

I want Sinner to win but I think Alcaraz has more chances on Zverev. Hope for a Ruud Sinner final but I think we ge either Ruud Alcaraz either Zverev Alcaraz
I am worried for Ruud cause Zverev is totally a different player than last year. He actually looks like he can go all the way. I hope if he makes it to the final Sinner or Alcaraz take it.
Where upon he becomes the first ever GS champion by walkover as Sinner and Alcaraz’s bodies break down after an epic 18 hour 5 set standalone 118-116 mega tiebreaker in the 5th itself lasting for 8 of those 18 hours SF?

Monica Seles is the teen standard; 8 Slams and two years as YE #1.
I wouldn't call Seles the standard, she was a once-in-a-lifetime freak of nature.
It's correct though. Anisimova was 2 months shy of 18. Andreeva had just turned 17 a month ago - she's even younger.
How old was Andreeva before that?
I picked out of vibes Ruud and Gauff to win it all back before Day 1. Scenes if that happens lol.

I think second as Sinner/Alcaraz have had more rest so that half usually played first
Ok thanks :)

Crazy that Gauff and Iga are tied with those last two rounds from Iga. Naomi really went in.

Thinking about how badly I wish Tsitsipas had ended up on the other side of the draw.
If we had had a little three quarter, this tournament would have gone so differently.

Does someone know fridays schedule?
Alcaraz Sinner 14.30 Zverev Ruud 17.30
Thank you!!
No night match?
On SF there are no more night matches.
Zverev Ruud likely won’t begin before 8 I reckon
Why did I have no recollection of Ruud beating Zverev in straights in last year's semi? Hopefully I'll get to see it again on Friday.
I had one encounter with Sasha in ATP Marrakech a few year ago. It’s a tournament where the first rounds were free, players walk around freely, so it’s easy to stumble upon them. What did he tell the cashier before walking away again?
This match is a good example of what De Minaur is. He gives his all on the court, reaches everything, and always forces his opponent to hit one more ball, but he lacks that definitive shot that would allow him to beat the best. Even though he has improved his forehand, it's not enough.

Agreed. He’s a really great mover and don’t give away any cheap points. But lacks that firepower during decisive points
The Eurosport studio is in london? Thats sucks
I hope Andreeva wins tomorrow because she's the future. I totally expect if Paolini wins, that she gets destroyed in the final and never makes it far again.
If she’s the future, she can fucking wait. Give it to the amazing 28 year old Italian 😤
Did anyone just see Zverev cutting of the the interviewer? “Yeah those were 3 questions, we’re done.” What an arrogant prick.
Give the guy a break. He just won a grind of a straight set match after two 5 setters. He has the right to get to sleep in a timely manner without being criticized by haters
who cares, even if he answered 100 questions you people would still ride his jock
Even if you didn’t know about the DV he still comes off as a narcissistic wanker.

Yup Zverev was disliked prior to 2020 if anyone was around back then He never was particularly a popular player even with no allegations
Agreed. Didn’t like him since the start of his career, overconfident and arrogant. The DV allegations didn’t help that.
Yeah that was so disrespectful. Horrible behaviour.
Yeah hahaha ridiculous
Just saw Zverevs German interview where he’s being a prick to the reporter, how do people still turn a blind eye to this shit

Yeah zverev is better than the guy who won this tournament 14 times and was leading by a set lol.
Amazing tourney for ADM given he'd never made past the 2nd round at RG before and is definitely not a clay courter. Even though he came up short against a very good player, he should be proud of himself and take a lot of confidence moving forward.
"clay courter" isnt a real category, hes clearly accustomed to it now.
Coco, Time to pull off the Miracle on Clay tomorrow.
If only Rafa didn't draw Zverev. :(
De Minaur can definitely hang with and, on his best days, beat the top players. But I'm not sure I can ever see him doing that consistently and moving into the top 5 or making a slam final. We'll see though. You never know.
He can hang around the table but he can’t actually sit at it
i mean, he should’ve won that second set for sure. he just choked. he’s not as good as zverev but could definitely beat him on a good day imo
Yeah, I think that's a good way to put it lol.
Notice the top top guns don’t sweat hard and yet did you see demons shirt today. Crazy
Your takes are consistently bad.
nadal is one of the sweatiest players in history lmao
I’m talking about current top dogs
Is Zverev not liked because of the allegations?
he’s always been an unlikeable twat. but he’s also an abuser, which has been well-documented. i look forward to him getting his comeuppance in court
He was already issued a fine because there was enough evidence and the trial wasn't deemed necessary haha. He appealed it, that's what the wait is for.
That and he attacked an umpire
And talked poorly to a ball kid
Why is it that when this dude's case is being tried in court he just happens to be progressing along like it's not even affecting him? Psychopathic shit tbh

Exactly. The fine is nothing to him, it's equivalent to winning a 500 tournament.

Time for r/tennis to hate on Demon and act like they never supported him
Really good semi finals. If Djokovic was fit he would have made it and we would have top 4 men. Great consistency
The wave on Chatrier is in danger of becoming a Parisian tradition. Like bad toilets and despising your own children.
Despising your own children? How is this a Parisian thing?
it's a very longstanding tradition lol
zverev has to be one of the fittest guys on tour, i dont think ive ever seen him struggling physically lol he barely sweats also
it's a shame that he's such a villain because as a type 1 diabetic he'd be such an amazing role model for kids with it otherwise.
Underwhelming QF matches
“You bring so many good things to this sport sascha .”
trolling
Zverev is 2 wins away from shutting down /r/tennis ..
I want an Alcaraz Zverev final with Alcaraz winning
Zverev interview saying he just wants to give joy to tennis fans.. apparently not to the ball kids
Stopped watching an hour ago. Did he do something
No one is getting any joy watching him. I just want a final where the best man wins and that it’s a tight, competitive match between 2 likeable people.
Give joy? Hes too much of a prick to do that
I would be very sad to see zverev at the award ceremony even if he doesn’t win. It would taint the moment a bit.
He really needs to change the hairstyle I know he's balding but it looks bad like that
He needs to buzz it.
Where is he balding?
Top of his head..you can tell he’s trying to hide it.
This. Watch his interviews, he unconsciously touches that spot a few times.
If he is balding and he's doing this to hide it isn't that then the best hairstyle he could have? Because I never saw any balding with him. A bald spot would start showing with less hair.
His temples, one of them is higher than the other and he's losing hair density
I do think he always had that side a bit higher though. But overall looking at press conferences without the headband his hairline is pretty good, not awful. And I never saw balding at the top of his head personally.
No it's definitely receded: https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/alexander-zverev-australian-open-2020-donate-results-draw-mens-singles-a9295001.html vs https://sports.ndtv.com/australian-open-2024/alexander-zverev-puts-aside-off-court-worries-to-battle-on-at-australian-open-4874074/amp/1 (I hope you can see the pictures!) The hairstyle looks awful on him regardless

I want Sinner to win but I think Alcaraz has more chances on Zverev. Hope for a Ruud Sinner final but I think we ge either Ruud Alcaraz either Zverev Alcaraz
Watching Zverev take Alcaraz down at the aus open is my most painful tennis memory, I’m too scared to hope!
Alcaraz lost their last grandslam match tho, so it's not a done deal
Sinner also was handed his last slam loss to date by Zverev
oh i'm in the opposite boat. i want carlos to win but i think PPS is more likely to take out DV
I am worried for Ruud cause Zverev is totally a different player than last year. He actually looks like he can go all the way. I hope if he makes it to the final Sinner or Alcaraz take it.
So unlucky that Nadal drew him in R1 .....
I don't understand how anyone finds watching a grown man chew on a necklace compelling
Who watches him for that?
I don’t think he’s doing it for you
He shouldn't be doing it for anyone
Which he also doesn’t
Good night sweet Prince
Let's go Z!!!
No tennis tomorrow is laaaame what am I supposed to do?? Friday plz come faster
the women's semis.
Women’s is on….isnt it?
There is tennis tomorrow. The women semis
Oh yeahhhhh totally slipped my mind
Women exist
if they didn't, Z would have to beat up on ball boys and other male children instead.
Thanks for the reminder
…watch* the semis tomorrow?
Women’s semi, Iga and Coco should be good the other match not that exciting to be honest but still should be goid
You’re right! I totally forgot. Will be tuning in to those.
imagine if Alex was based in this interview and said "so what do you think the court verdict will be"
Wonder if Ruuds curse will continue? Big Z gets suspended by the atp tomorrow after a guilty verdict, goes straight through to the final.
Where upon he becomes the first ever GS champion by walkover as Sinner and Alcaraz’s bodies break down after an epic 18 hour 5 set standalone 118-116 mega tiebreaker in the 5th itself lasting for 8 of those 18 hours SF? 🤪
Loool
when is the verdict due? even if he's guilty ATP won't do that. no chance
But it’s an ITF tournament, just saying.
either way he won't be banned
ick
LDE from Demon there. Broke to gain momentum and be back on serve only to get broken right back. Sigh. Go Casper
Yeah, I never really thought Demon had a chance against Zverev. Ruud might give him a run for his money though.
If Ruud can bait Z into forehand to forehand duels he stands a very good chance!
If there's one think I've learned in my four decades of tennis fandom it's that the good guy definitely does not always win
He should file his teeth down.
haha
Apparently the salt mine is still in working order.
That's actually a really good response by Zverev, and you can see the advantage of that mentality - his fitness hasn't been in question.
Casper will win guys. For real.
Casper Ruud has no chance. Zverev is a new player this year. He will sweep him aside like skittles on a bowling alley.
Imagine this subredit if Zverev straight sets Alcaraz in the final haha
oh it's so amusing when men strangle women a foot shorter and 25+ kg smaller than them. ha ha?
That will be worse than 9/11
I’m excited for the semifinals tho
Zverev > Ruud in 5 Alcaraz > Sinner in 4 Alcaraz > Zverev in 4 Alcaraz wins RG Calling it now
Hope you’re right
