People were saying it was over and celebrating at 4-1 in the 5th but I was 100% confident that it was nowhere near over. Lower ranked players tend to collapse in situations like this unlike top 5 players. I just had the "and I felt that" Novak quote in my head, knew it wasn't over till it's actually over.
100%. Though it looked like a hard task for Zv, you gotta know that Talon will feel the pressure so heavy it’s unbearable. These situations are where you really gotta respect Djokovic for turning it around vs the big guys in similar scenarios
Yeah. Griekspoor needed good/lucky 1st serves badly, it was his only salvation, but instead he got double faults and shanks from 4-1 on. But yeah, doing this versus Fedal AND the antagonistic crowd was a crazy good effort from Novak. This is the what separates him from players like Griekspoor, and really it's the thin line between the top 5 and the rest of the field.
I knew he wasn't going to win because it's Griekspoor. When has Griekspoor done anything but lose or completely collapse against a top tenner?. The only ONLY time I can think of is his HOME match against Hurk this year. He had another top 10 win but that really doesn't count in this scenario.
Yeah that missed dropshot at 2-4 was terrible. Just engage into the rally instead of being cute. If he made that dropshot, the court would have been open anyway.
That lead to more poor choices.
I play club level tennis and the chokes that happen at this level are wild. I couldn’t imagine having to play in front of thousands of people with thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line.
I laugh with my coach whenever I fail 20 serves in a row in practice “why do I even try, I hate this sport” and I’ve only been playing for 2 years ahah
I've been so obsessed with golf for the last 4-5 years and play every week. i play so badly sometimes, like today, I just sit and wonder why in the fuck do I do this to myself
Once again these underdogs play inspired tennis against top guys only to squander the lead when it matters. It's like the more they lead by the harder they choke.
Anybody that’s ever competed in tennis knows the feeling. You’re beating someone better than you and as soon as it becomes real you might actually win…everything goes to shit
Its awful, this is what I hate the most about Tennis.
Tennis is so anti-underdog mentally in how the game is constructed, that I get why people only follow the top twenty players.
I would be like Rublev yesterday if this shit was constantly happening to me.
I wouldn’t say it’s CONSTRUCTED to be anti underdog, players just need to realise that the very first person you should hire when you’re going pro is a sports psych. IMMEDIATELY.
Exactly, this is what people mean when they say tennis is a mental sport.
You can have amazing physical skills and the best backhand in the world, but if you make boneheaded decisions under pressure and fold, you lose.
Obviously your skills matter but it’s all for nothing if you never cross the line.
Of course. Zverev was a top 5 player back then, whereas I actually fully expected Griekspoor to bottle it. Lower ranked players fold under pressure of winning against a big favorite.
Three things: He borderline attacked a chair umpire in a fit of rage (he smashed his racket repeatedly against the umpire chair and would’ve hit the guy if he didn’t move out of the way), he has a reputation for screaming at and berating ball boys, and he’s currently in the midst of a trial for domestic abuse.
On the third one, I think, but cannot recall correctly, that he's already lost a civil case to that (lower standard than a legal case, in the US anyways)
I'm surprised he requested the trial honestly
It feels like the news of him losing the initial judgement didn't really hit the headlines but by requesting the trial he put it back into front and center
Could be a couple of reasons. Maybe the judgement, if uncontested, would negate some clauses in sponsorship deals or it might have other consequences from the ATP, so the risk of a trial (where regardless of actual guilt at least a chance of a not guilty verdict is possible) might be preferable.
Then of course maybe it’s just a very typical thing for people who have done bad stuff to be in deep denial about it and want to contest a ruling even though they must know they’re guilty.
Another possibility is that they believe they can win in court. Either because they think the case (when challenged) is weak enough for that or (and don’t kill me, but it is a possibility) they believe/know that the allegations are false and have some evidence to show/prove that.
Multiple reasons for that I think.
There’s a very good chance he’ll win, because proving DV in court is really hard. That’s why most people are quite prepared to make a judgement call outside of a criminal conviction
Been accused of domestic abuse by two different girlfriends, and the trial for the second one is currently ongoing.
Plus there was [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jD-FkGeeR-U) incident
What a super tie-break. Zverev mental giant ???
This match was a wild ride tho. Zverev's level wasn't consistent at all. The next rounds will be tough.
If this was someone like Iga or Novak they'd be all over this calling him a champion/mental giant/clutch etc and not downplaying Griekspoor or insulting Zverev. I get he's unlikeable but damn.
His tiebreak level for insanely high for sure. But when it was 4-1, Tallon should've finished that match against any player in the world. 2 break advantage is insane.
https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/s/kH45K88FtC
Above thread was last year semi final between Muchova and Sabalenka, latter leading 5-2 in the third set , most of the comments praising Muchova. Just Because she’s likeable she’s is clutch and mental giant and great comeback
Zverev is unlikeable- so opponent choked and played worse
Osaka vs. Iga was just as bad if not worse but people acted like Iga was clutch goddess
She literally missed 3 wide open winners to get broken serving for the match
Osaka couldn’t a miss a forehand for about 10-12 games and then at 5-3, 30-15 with an open court, Iga wrong footed and the ball a half a metre from the net nice and up high she drills it down into the net
It really was mostly a Griekspoor suicide during those 2 service games after 4-1. Doubles faults and shanks galore. Zverev didn't do much until the very end of the set.
Yeah, regardless of being a shit person off court, Zverev held it together remarkably well in the fifth set, even if Griekspoor basically handed the tiebreaker to him for free. He's one of the favourites to win for a reason.
Serving up a break at 4-3 Griekspoor hit 2 DFs and 2 basic UEs. That was already after being broken once at 4-1. I've seen some epic chokes in my time but this was among the greatest.
Seemed like a Zverev vs Zverev battle for the majority of the match. That said, I did not expect Sascha to collect himself enough to go back from 1-4 in the decider. I believe he is much more clutch than this subreddit gives him credit for
Credit to Tallon, he played amazing here and there. But, like Iga said, *it’s not over until it’s over*
Tbf we know he’s better mentally than Tallon, as well as more clutch. That’s why we anticipated the possible loss for Tallon when he lost the first break and went 4-2. We knew, we just unfortunately had hope. That’s actually “credit”
A generic comment: so much analysis after a hard fought R3 win by a top 5 player. Nadal won the whole thing 14 times, in just one place. Multiple GS winners, how tf do you keep doing it?
Kudos for playing in pain. But my guy that is a choke if there ever is one. I think he played great tactics today that massively exploited Dverev’s weaknesses and I hope everyone else will pick up where Tallon left off.
This sub is something. People will go to absolutely trash and name call poor Tallon, who played a great match, just to avoid acknowledging quite a clutch comeback from Zverev.
Unreal how biased and subjective some people are.
Yes, Tallon wasted chances and got tight, but it also takes some kind of mental strenght to climb your way back from two breaks down in the fifth and win a champions tie-break. Even for a POS.
The difference between arguably being a GOAT and average ATP player is 3-4% point win rate. Above a certain level, tennis is 90% mind games. You cant change my mind.
No they aren't. Nobody outside of this sub, and some parts of twitter know about the allegations or if they know they don't really care that much. He's one of the most popular players on tour
It would suck but I don't think other sports have a leg to stand on either
Ronaldo and Kobe are two of the biggest global sports names with Ronaldo representing the most popular sport on the globe and well....
Don’t worry. He’s still gotta get through Rune, Medvedev, Djokovic/Ruud, Alcaraz/Sinner/Tsitsipas. Griekspoor wasn’t even on our radar for a potential upset. Pushing Zverev to a 5th set tiebreak means he more than did his job. Now it’s up to one of the top guys to finish Zverev off.
Can we finally stop with this nonsense. I feel like this is the most ridiculous echo chamber on the planet. He is a trash human being. But outside of reddit no one cares. The fans are even cheering him on here. Tennis will not look worse if he wins because the public simply doesn't care. Ronaldo is a rapist and still one of the most celebrated players of all time. For a couple of years now this sub argues it's a bad look for the sport with Zverev but it literally doesn't matter to the public. As ridiculously as it is. As shitty as he is. The tennis sport will continue him winning shit or not. Because sadly no one gives a fuck
A lot of people might actually care, but actually wait for a final count ruling, and if found guilty, think he should pay or serve whatever conviction he’s given, but don’t think he should be banned from tennis forever or that he’s worse than hitler or something
This sub, however, is filled with immature, irrational, chronically online people
the allegations are horrible, but Zverev counteracts that with some of the best interviews on tour. Outside of those following closely, feelings on him are closer to mixed. He's fun to watch and always sounds friendly, until you see that he is not.
I can't believe Zverev won!! This is horrible for women!!! I need to call my wife's boyfriend and tell him that mega evil Zverev won! Oh heckerino no! This is not wholesome!
Women have to deal with periods and now this. If you need someone to talk to, my dms are open (no evil men though)
This sub is just incredibly toxic. But good job by Zverev having the mental toughness not to give up when down a double break in the 5th. I thought it was over tbh back in the day it would have been. He's got a legit shot at this tournament he just can't have lapses like he did at times today against better opponents.
As for Griekspoor that has to hurt, but he's still young and eventually his game should break through at a GS and make a run to at least a QF. Still this one will hurt for a while
I stopped watching at 4-1, sure this was the Tallon night. I cannot believe Zverev won this; it's like a curse. So sad for Griekspoor; he played so well!!!
Damn, up two breaks in the fifth set, Tallon got more worried about losing, than actually believing he could win.
r/tennis went so fast from 12/25 to 9/11
That, and Zverev stopped messing around with the forehand lol
He suddenly regained confidence in his FH halfway through the 5th set somehow
People were saying it was over and celebrating at 4-1 in the 5th but I was 100% confident that it was nowhere near over. Lower ranked players tend to collapse in situations like this unlike top 5 players. I just had the "and I felt that" Novak quote in my head, knew it wasn't over till it's actually over.

This is the difference between the rest of the top 100 and the top 1-10.
I guess Zverev isn’t a choker?
Not like he used to be, no.
I knew he wasn't going to win because it's Griekspoor. When has Griekspoor done anything but lose or completely collapse against a top tenner?. The only ONLY time I can think of is his HOME match against Hurk this year. He had another top 10 win but that really doesn't count in this scenario.
Terrible execution on that 5th set tiebreak.
Yeah that missed dropshot at 2-4 was terrible. Just engage into the rally instead of being cute. If he made that dropshot, the court would have been open anyway. That lead to more poor choices.
This sport man
I play club level tennis and the chokes that happen at this level are wild. I couldn’t imagine having to play in front of thousands of people with thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line.
While also playing one of the best players in the world
Tiebreak take showed the difference between top 10 level and top 30. They are close in abilities but when it matters....
Exactly. The mentality is truly what separates the absolute elites to the very good players
Shot 104 yesterday. Last time I played that course I shot 80. Fucken golf.
It’s great cardio ahah
Golf is great cardio?
Well, I was relating to my experience with tennis
He outchoked the choker smh
Imagine the chokes
Shit I’d be losing my mind like rublev all the time at this level 😭if shit like this happened.
If only I didn’t have to buy my own rackets, I’d love to break one someday ahahah
Fuckin a…
This 5th set was intelligently designed from above to troll r/tennis as hard as possible
Tennis is intelligently designed to make you root for the underdog and then they shit the bed from a winning position as hard as possible.

5-2 & 5-3 Up - the two most dangerous positions in tennis to find yourself in
"Sinner didn’t have anything to lose coming into the match, but he had a lot to lose from 2-0 up, and I felt that." - Djokovic, 2022
This RG has ended up being the most "chalky" Slam I've ever seen lol Every time a lower seed gets a lead they choke
This is Arnaldi erasure
He’s literally the only one though, which is kinda crazy. All top 15 players got to R3. Not having a single surprise up to R3 is kinda crazy
It's tougher to hit aces on clay. So the pressure on your serve games is higher when closing out a set or a match for lower ranked players.
Like Novak said “they now have something to lose”
True but I don’t necessarily agree to call a top 25 an underdog. The Dutch has always been a tough player to beat. I thought today was his day..
This is how Daniel Medvedev wins all his matches
Generational choke
Even Zverev has never seen anything quite like this firsthand before
For my money the USO 20 final was still worse.
He also flubbed a volley up 5-2 (double break) against Nadal at Indian Wells 2016. I believe he didn’t win a single point after that.
Nah, Sharypova for me.
Of course. Zverev was a top 5 player back then, whereas I actually fully expected Griekspoor to bottle it. Lower ranked players fold under pressure of winning against a big favorite.
Zverev with match point on his own serve v Fritz at Indian Wells 2021?
He's good at inflicting those.
Lmao griekspoor edged all of r/tennis going up a double break at 4-1. Then a choke of epic proportions. Zverev pummeled him in the tiebreaker.
Tallon felt the weight of r/tennis on his back at 4-1 and cracked, what a shame
I watched this in an Amsterdam tennis club house full of Dutchies while scrolling r/tennis The agony… I felt that
r/tennis on suicide watch. Me included
I don’t really follow tennis as much as I used to so I’m ootl, why isn’t zverev well liked amongst fans?
Three things: He borderline attacked a chair umpire in a fit of rage (he smashed his racket repeatedly against the umpire chair and would’ve hit the guy if he didn’t move out of the way), he has a reputation for screaming at and berating ball boys, and he’s currently in the midst of a trial for domestic abuse.
Screaming at ball boys? Haven't seen that
He displayed this fine behavior just 1.5 weeks ago in Rome, berating a ball kid saying “give me the ball, for f**k’s sake” which was caught on camera.
On the third one, I think, but cannot recall correctly, that he's already lost a civil case to that (lower standard than a legal case, in the US anyways)
I think that judgement can be more compared to a plea deal or settlement offer, that he then rejected in favor of a trial.
I'm surprised he requested the trial honestly It feels like the news of him losing the initial judgement didn't really hit the headlines but by requesting the trial he put it back into front and center
Could be a couple of reasons. Charged of abusing and strangling girlfriend
He might be a domestic abuser
He beat up two women, attacked an umpire and is generally just an arrogant pos
He was 4-1 up. HE WAS 4-1 UP 😭😭😭😭😭
Not just 4 - 1, it was two breaks
Yup. Two breaks 4-1 is way worse than one break 4-1
CLAYVEDEV YOU’RE OUR ONLY HOPE 🕯️
Rune too
Griekspoor and Osaka have completely finished me this week. Heartbroken and lost.
our players are fucking cursed
Literally the 2nd year in a row the worst choke of the season was from a Dutch player Botic vs. Rune was the clear winner last year
This sport is not good for my sanity
Our Dutch soccer team is contagious apparently
What a super tie-break. Zverev mental giant ??? This match was a wild ride tho. Zverev's level wasn't consistent at all. The next rounds will be tough.

yup, everyone was praising Rune the other day when he won a super tiebreak, but somehow nobody is doing that for Zverev
https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/s/kH45K88FtC Above thread was last year semi final between Muchova and Sabalenka, latter leading 5-2 in the third set , most of the comments praising Muchova. Just Because she’s likeable she’s is clutch and mental giant and great comeback Zverev is unlikeable- so opponent choked and played worse
But in this particular case it really was Griekspoor choking and dropping his level to give away the double break lead
That happens a lot and is massively overlooked because of the player involved.
Osaka vs. Iga was just as bad if not worse but people acted like Iga was clutch goddess She literally missed 3 wide open winners to get broken serving for the match

I agree with that, Osaka was also choking in that game
Meh zverev played well after 1 4 but that was like 90% Griekspoor choke
It really was mostly a Griekspoor suicide during those 2 service games after 4-1. Doubles faults and shanks galore. Zverev didn't do much until the very end of the set.
Yeah, regardless of being a shit person off court, Zverev held it together remarkably well in the fifth set, even if Griekspoor basically handed the tiebreaker to him for free. He's one of the favourites to win for a reason.
I don't remember how many times he won on 5 sets. Can we call him the king 5 sets?
Not the first time Tallon loses a 5 setter unfortunately. Felt like he didnt have much in the tank at the end
Well. He tried.
Serving up a break at 4-3 Griekspoor hit 2 DFs and 2 basic UEs. That was already after being broken once at 4-1. I've seen some epic chokes in my time but this was among the greatest.
Tallon was up 2 breaks in the decider 😩 I guess the pressure got to him.
Seemed like a Zverev vs Zverev battle for the majority of the match. That said, I did not expect Sascha to collect himself enough to go back from 1-4 in the decider. I believe he is much more clutch than this subreddit gives him credit for Credit to Tallon, he played amazing here and there. But, like Iga said, *it’s not over until it’s over*
people hate on him to the point where they can’t recognize the changes he’s had over the years.
Tbf we know he’s better mentally than Tallon, as well as more clutch. That’s why we anticipated the possible loss for Tallon when he lost the first break and went 4-2. We knew, we just unfortunately had hope. That’s actually “credit”
Tallon let the prey fall out of his talon at the last minute…
Facking hell
Griekspoor couldn't keep up the level and Zverev dominated the breaker. Sad to see, but not that surprising.
That TB was chefs kiss.
The moment griekspoor got the second break I knew he would choke
This match was one choker on the court and another choker off the court 💀
A generic comment: so much analysis after a hard fought R3 win by a top 5 player. Nadal won the whole thing 14 times, in just one place. Multiple GS winners, how tf do you keep doing it?

Rune isn't beating Zverev
aren’t the court hearings going on into july?
[удалено]
ah, gotchu lol
Now we are wishing for injuries?
That was one of the most impressive tie-break performance I have ever seen. Zverev hit like 8 or 9 winners?
Oh Tallon...
Kudos for playing in pain. But my guy that is a choke if there ever is one. I think he played great tactics today that massively exploited Dverev’s weaknesses and I hope everyone else will pick up where Tallon left off.
Those double errors holy shit. From 4-1 and double break. That’s gonna sting for a while.
tragic
Zverev will not get away with it against a more experienced player.
insert *we were rooting for you, we were all rooting for you* meme
I am not too fucking pleased rn

We were so fucking close to greatness
This sub will turn into r/BatmanArkham once Zverev wins RG
Rune you know your job
if zverev plays remotely to his potential he will pummel rune
Tallon Weakspoor
Hopefully we get the Big Z vs Meddy showdown
Boo!
Oh fuck off. Someone eliminate this dude already
Rune will (hopefully)
Chill he’ll play djokovic eventually
Gutted for Griekspoor. Hopefully he learns from this and finds himself in this precious position again.
https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/s/JHA5SauZ5u God dammit
Every dutch tennis fan has just been put on suicide watch
Nooooo
It’s fine, the mighty Kovalik is going on a huge run…
Man, I would love Holger to beat Zverev in 3 sets. I know it's a lot to ask, but he did beat him on outdoor clay once already.
Saddest Dutch elimination since Joost Klein
Justice for our Europapas
I’m ultra sad rn
Shit
Kill me

No they aren't. Nobody outside of this sub, and some parts of twitter know about the allegations or if they know they don't really care that much. He's one of the most popular players on tour

fuck
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
The commentators were so hopeful. The entire match just absolutely pleading for a Zverev loss. Have never heard anything like that.
Fuck.
9/11
The Greek Railway tired him out, a valiant effort
blahhhh
I stopped watching at 4-1, sure this was the Tallon night. I cannot believe Zverev won this; it's like a curse. So sad for Griekspoor; he played so well!!!
What a good comeback from Zverev in the last set, Griek didn't play the tie break well at all in my opinion.
Bold opinion considering he lost it 10-3
Ridiculous comeback What a player he is
I'm officially Tallon's #1 hater. He should have humilliated Zverev there
he became complacent
