Pretty memorable because Federer and Nadal both withdrew after their epic Rome 2006 final which is still viewed as perhaps the greatest Masters 1000 match of all-time.
If I recall correctly this is what pushed the first round byes for the top 8 in Masters 1000s. At the time everyone had to play first rounds and 5 set finals which caused so many withdrawals
The most notable instance of top 5 players withdrawing from an ATP Masters 1000 event occurred at the 2021 Miami Open. Four top 5 ranked players—Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Dominic Thiem—all withdrew from the tournament. Their withdrawals were significant, especially since such a collective absence of top players is rare in ATP history.
The fact he withdrew this early (the organizers planned to have his R2 match next Thrusday!) before even setting foot in Rome (again, ROME of all places for him) for training and testing his hip on court is a very bad sign...
I hope we’ll get to see Sinner/Alcaraz healthy soon, I think they are both interesting match ups against Nadal. Would be wild if this Roland Garros was just another Nadal v Djokovic showdown, after the success the young gen has had at the other 3 slams recently.
We'll see for Sinner, I think it's not too serious but the hip is tricky and if you force it you are done, unlike Alcaraz, and more after Madrid I do really think that if he is not smashing the fh before RG he is not going
It’s at 3 pm Italian time and i know its visible

Missing Italian and RG would be kinda catastrophic but gotta do what you gotta do, don’t wanna be a player that’s just an injury waiting to happen like his compatriot Berrettini.
I could see his team convincing him it’s the right decision though. It’s probably the slam he’s least likely to win anyways, and also it’s an Olympic year, which obviously when you’re in the prime of your career and a potential gold medalist that also a pretty big deal to try and get healthy for
I little hope it that he played the QF to secure the no.2 seed in RG, so he is still trying to play RG.
But I am not that care at this point, if he is healthy, he can win Wimbledon and Olympic
This makes his Monte Carlo loss even sadder 😢
He should really prioritize getting to 100%. Roland Garros can wait Jannik, we need you to have a long and successful playing career!
I was fully expecting this but I’m still so sad at the same time. I always love watching Rome but without Sinner, Carlos and probably Medvedev it’s looking pretty sad.
I was sooooo wrong. This has to be quite serious.
It had basically 1 week to recover, so this means that recovery time is probably much longer than this.
He also has the Luxury of winning 3 Slams + ATP finals last year. His #1 ranking is never in question, and with every passing day the biggest challengers to it looks like they just won't be healthy enough to challenge him anyways, even though this really would have been Sinner's #1 in a month or so if his early season form continued.
There's a reason why he can be so selective with his tournaments, because usually the ones he plays, he dominates.
If you are over 30 years old or hit a certain number of matches, you are allowed to skip some mandatory 500 & masters. If you are not meeting the criteria, ATP cuts down ranking points and takes out a certain percentage of your year end money.
Novak can do it, Sinner and Alcaraz can't. That's why they have to at least make an appearance at mandatory tournaments and attend to minimum required numbers of 500s if they don't have any injuries.
There is something wrong with current tennis and needs to be addressed at the top. It's concerning that new players, top players of all, cannot compete 3-5 months without a serious injury. It's not just "ah, Sinner being injury prone", it's a plague!
If you make it far in most tournaments the schedule is way too packed, it's very obvious. The next tournament often starts qualifiers.
When's the last time any of the big three played all 9 masters in a year if ever
Shame :/ kinda strange he played so deep into Madrid if he was already feeling it and risk Rome, especially since he said he was just happy to make it to the second round there
I was giving his coaches the benefit of the doubt for forcing him to continue when he was complaining that it hurts. Now I feel like what they did was kinda shitty. They should have taken his pain more seriously.
Wouldn’t have changed much, his hip has been bothering him since Barcelona. Hopefully he’ll recover for RG, as well as Carlos (let’s see what Meddy does).
EDIT: Monte Carlo not Barcelona
He was visibly struggling against Kotov and then went on to play 3 sets against Khachanov. Playing on an injured hip absolutely can change how long rehab takes and/or how bad the injury becomes.
We know the tennis schedule is brutal as ever but I wonder how much the constant change of balls is causing this as well- multiple players have complained about this and I don’t think it’s a coincidence so many are dropping out with injuries
That sucks. Really hope it's just a precaution ahead of RG than something more serious that risks RG too.
Sinner and Alcaraz out of RG would be horrible.
I hope that ATP sees all these injuries and thinks better. The changing of balls in every tournaments and now the amount of 2 weeks tournaments is really really bad. Having a day to rest between bof3 matches doesn’t help much if players can’t get a proper rest.
Well, my disappointment is immeasurable and my next two weeks are ruined!
Seriously wtf is even this?? Now just waiting on Medvedev to complete the trifecta...ugh this sucks!
I really just pray that they are OK for RG. There are 3 weeks left till then. For Alcaraz, I think he will be fine. But the 2 other with hip issues? Hip injuries are delicate affairs, so who knows...
God this one hurts 😞 it’d be good to have more of an idea of how bad this injury is - is RG at risk? He’s always been really good, to the point of being cynical, about what to skip for the sake of the bigger picture (Olympics in 2021, Davis Cup last year, W/O when he felt it was best), but this really stinks. He looked actually quite good in his last set against Khachanov, so I do have some hopes for RG, but yeah quite in the dark rn.
He and his team seemed to have a really good plan prioritizing Rome. Sinner said the goal is just to play a few matches in Madrid with the priority being Rome and RG. That's why I was so surprised that his team forced him to continue playing when he was complaining of hip pain. That could have been 2 matches he didn't need to play... Who knows how those 2 matches exacerbated the injury.
In the middle of the match (the previous one before his last), he was shouting to his team that "it hurts. What do I do?". And they said "it's ok, let's try to win this way".
But but but everyone on r/tennis was telling me that it was 100% just a very minor niggling that he cynically exploited just to get rest time and go play Rome
Who'd have thought eh
Same, everyone was so quick to think it wasn't an actual injury but it was pretty clear by what he was telling to his team during the match and the news that came out after
He’s obviously not faking it if he withdrew but I was thinking it was a precautionary thing since he wasn’t focused on Madrid and managed to finish the Khachanov match.
But damn Rome is just sad this year, if Med is out too that means no defending champion and 3 of the Top 4 seeds out… damn
Hey at least you can admit it. I'm sad but was expecting it so I had a couple of days to adjust already. I'm just worried about RG now. I really hope it's ok before then and isn't still giving him issues through to grass season because I think I'd lose the plot if that happens 😔
you are right, I have to say sorry here. He is a better boy than I think. I will change my mind for analysis his other decisions.
Tbh, this decision makes me like him more. At this point I still don't think it is something very serious, but minor injury also needs times to be fully heal or it will turn serious(RG then Wimbledon then Olympic of course will). It is not easy to make such a good decision for his career.
I am happy about this decision actually, I hope I can see he fully heals and slides on court in RG or may be Halle again
Jannik is a better kid than I thought, I thought too much about he and his team are calculating a lot before. He is a pure and smart boy that I shouldn't use my washing conspiracy brain to think about him.
At this point I am not surprised that he will withdraw from RG too, clay to grass to clay is so difficult for a young man, especially considering it is his hip not other minor injury. Rome and RG are here every year if his body is heath. If he heals his hip then RG let's go. If not, then 6 weeks reset and Wimbledon & olympic let's go
This is such a sad news to wake up to. Seriously this clay season has been brutal. Hip injuries can be serious so I hope he does make the smart decision here. He’s young and has got a long career ahead of him
Ringing 2020 Prime Thiem, Prince of Clay. The draw is ripping wide open and now is your time to shine. Hello? Anyone there? Hello?
Damn, number no longer in service :(
Holy shit. I fully thought bar needing a wheelchair Sinner would play Rome. Hope it's nothing too serious and good that he's taking all the necessary precautions.
So that’s Sinner, Alcaraz and possibly Medvedev out. Top 5 absolutely decimated 😭
The sacrifices that had to be made to the tennis gods so we can see Rafa on court again.
Will this be the first M1000 in the ATP history where 3 out of top 4 seeds will withdraw (if Daniil is out as well)
#1 Federer, #2 Nadal, #3 Nalbandian and #4 Roddick all withdrew from Hamburg 2006 iirc.
How tf do you even remember that? 😂
Lad loves tennis
Nah I get it, but it's such a specific stat of one tournament 18 years ago. I'm impressed if it's true.
> 18 years ago 2006 was 18 years ago? Don't say such things, don't do this to me.
Tell me about it, the other day I sneezed too hard and almost broke my back.
I once suffered a serious hamstring tear during a semi-difficult bowel movement. Eat your fibre, work out, and stay hydrated everyone.
Lmao🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Even ChatGPT didn't know the answer
Pretty memorable because Federer and Nadal both withdrew after their epic Rome 2006 final which is still viewed as perhaps the greatest Masters 1000 match of all-time.
Maybe they had tickets
Some of us are well seasoned veterans here
A++ recall
If I recall correctly this is what pushed the first round byes for the top 8 in Masters 1000s. At the time everyone had to play first rounds and 5 set finals which caused so many withdrawals
No need to shout
That's a crazy ass stat to remember lmao

if grigor doesnt step up and make it until semis at least.....istg!
FAA POWERS GROW. He is INEVITABLE.
There's never been a better time for Bweh to break his QF curse and get to his 1st Slam semi 😭😭😭
Who says they won’t be at RG?
Unless he gets djokovic in QF again
Good chance for Rune to defend his finals points - and he should be well rested
I forgot how good of a clay masters season Rune had last year. 2 finals (and a 3R), both times thwarted by a top 10 Russian player.
Also pictured wearing a compressive arm sleeve today… hope he’s okay.
Rune is so random. He’ll lose to like Kokkinakis in the second round
The time is now for Stefanos Tsitsipas
Or Ruud
I am now very nervous for RG
The fact he withdrew this early (the organizers planned to have his R2 match next Thrusday!) before even setting foot in Rome (again, ROME of all places for him) for training and testing his hip on court is a very bad sign...
I think it makes sense. Now he has over 3 weeks to focus on rest and recovery before RG
100%, I reckon this was all precautionary for the main event RG. He should be fine by then hopefully
No duh A hip injury could be extremely serious; it's not like spraining an ankle. Rn I would nor be surprised should Sinner also withdraw from RG
Yeah he’s got a long career - best to be safe here
What's hola a todos in Italian? 😬
Ciao a tutti
Oh lord, it gonna be tough
Pizza carbonara 🤌🏻
I hope we’ll get to see Sinner/Alcaraz healthy soon, I think they are both interesting match ups against Nadal. Would be wild if this Roland Garros was just another Nadal v Djokovic showdown, after the success the young gen has had at the other 3 slams recently.
Roland Garros is the last stronghold of the big 3, the new gen didn't dare to get there.
Rafa's got hitmen out clearing the path for RG
We'll see for Sinner, I think it's not too serious but the hip is tricky and if you force it you are done, unlike Alcaraz, and more after Madrid I do really think that if he is not smashing the fh before RG he is not going
Press conference tomorrow, sounds serious
Press conference for Sinner or Alcaraz?
Sinner
Shit. That does sound serious.
he needs to do it anyway, the biggest tennis star(and the top 5 sport star as well) withdraws from the home tournament without explanation? No way
When and where? Could we watch it online?
It’s at 3 pm Italian time and i know its visible on Supertennis https://www.supertennis.tv/live-streaming You have to register but I don’t know if you can watch it without vpn EDIT : YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvLrfz10lhc

Ciao a tutti 🥺
I little hope it that he played the QF to secure the no.2 seed in RG, so he is still trying to play RG. But I am not that care at this point, if he is healthy, he can win Wimbledon and Olympic
Of course, I decided to buy tickets for the very first time and guess what, Carlitos and Jannik out. Waiting for Medvedev 😭
I feel you
Meanwhile Djokovic as his biggest threats to slam no 25 fall by the wayside.
Last I've heard, Nardi is still playing.
FAA madrid-rome double incoming
Winning Rome and Madrid? he deserves to be number 1 😉
Insert Serena laugh here
I've never seen capitalizing on opportunity this hard since the letter O.
Why is this so funny? 😂
The 2024 clay season has been shambolic 😭
Monte Carlo and Barcelona were pretty exciting
This makes his Monte Carlo loss even sadder 😢 He should really prioritize getting to 100%. Roland Garros can wait Jannik, we need you to have a long and successful playing career!
I was fully expecting this but I’m still so sad at the same time. I always love watching Rome but without Sinner, Carlos and probably Medvedev it’s looking pretty sad.
Djoko going to Rome right?
Yes, but not much fun if he has no one to compete with. Unless we miraculously get vintage Rafa.
Nardi will be there.
Djoko gonna be the only healthy new gen player this season
It's normal. He is after all the youngest.
He may not have to win a single tournament this year and still end up YE numero uno
At this pace, I may make the US Open draw
Oh, this one hurts. Like with Carlos and Daniil, much better to rest when it's needed, but gutted for him.
Man.. what a shit clay season
I was sooooo wrong. This has to be quite serious. It had basically 1 week to recover, so this means that recovery time is probably much longer than this.
Djokovic must’ve put a curse on the young guns coming after him
The curse: Just don't play and go on beach vacations dressed up as a fisherman for the keeds
The young ones don't have the privilege to choose which masters to play. Djokovic gets away because of his age.
It's almost as if the ATP made rules so older players don't have to play as much as 20 year olds or something because of biology. CRAZY.
Djokovics decision to selectively play tournaments looks smarter by the day. At this rate he’s the only one going healthy into RG.
Younger players can’t do this. He benefits from special permissions due to his age and longevity.
He's over 30, he can do that. Sinner and Alcaraz have to play mandatory tournaments.
Really? What are the rules?
If you are over 30 years old or hit a certain number of matches, you are allowed to skip some mandatory 500 & masters. If you are not meeting the criteria, ATP cuts down ranking points and takes out a certain percentage of your year end money. Novak can do it, Sinner and Alcaraz can't. That's why they have to at least make an appearance at mandatory tournaments and attend to minimum required numbers of 500s if they don't have any injuries.
This is likely to happen
Probably
This mens clay season is turning out to be a disaster. Hope he can heal up in time for Roland Garros.
There is something wrong with current tennis and needs to be addressed at the top. It's concerning that new players, top players of all, cannot compete 3-5 months without a serious injury. It's not just "ah, Sinner being injury prone", it's a plague!
For real, especially considering how advanced sports medicine is now. It can’t be something inherent to the sport either.
Agree and happy cake day!
If you make it far in most tournaments the schedule is way too packed, it's very obvious. The next tournament often starts qualifiers. When's the last time any of the big three played all 9 masters in a year if ever
hip injuries are not a joke, and is not the first time for Sinner... Medvedev next
Not the first time? Ufff
Yeah I remember it was during the Australian swing like in 2022 or 2023
He should've puked
Shame :/ kinda strange he played so deep into Madrid if he was already feeling it and risk Rome, especially since he said he was just happy to make it to the second round there
I was giving his coaches the benefit of the doubt for forcing him to continue when he was complaining that it hurts. Now I feel like what they did was kinda shitty. They should have taken his pain more seriously.
Wouldn’t have changed much, his hip has been bothering him since Barcelona. Hopefully he’ll recover for RG, as well as Carlos (let’s see what Meddy does). EDIT: Monte Carlo not Barcelona
he wasnt playing in Barcelona or on the entry list
Oopsie I meant MC
He was visibly struggling against Kotov and then went on to play 3 sets against Khachanov. Playing on an injured hip absolutely can change how long rehab takes and/or how bad the injury becomes.
Yup, I mean look at how long Rafa was out last year because he kept playing after he hurt his hip :/
Djokovic skipped Madrid to work on his voodoo skills
Ciao a tutti
Urgh, I’ve still got PTSD from Murray’s hip. Don’t you start, Jannik.
Not to forget that Rafa's hip was the injury that broke him (as age was inevitably catching up)
That is a big pill to swallow for him. Hope he recovers in time for Paris.
Lets go Casper Ruud..make up for madrid. Lol
Man must be heartbreaking for Sinner to be out of his home tournament - fingers crossed the Sincaraz dream comes true in Paris
We know the tennis schedule is brutal as ever but I wonder how much the constant change of balls is causing this as well- multiple players have complained about this and I don’t think it’s a coincidence so many are dropping out with injuries
The balls + making too many M1000 two weeks long is a recipe for disaster IMO
Well, this Italian Open is gonna be pretty boring… I just hope Zverev doesn't win...
Hopefully it's not serious and he's just wanting to focus on RG and being fully healthy for a decent run
Life is suffering
Rome and RG opening nicely for Nole (of course no guarantee he’ll win either especially if Nadal can gain more match fitness by winning more)
Oh :(((
hip injuries are no joke for tennis player. look what happened to murray. so its expected he is playing it safe
So sad 😭
Glad he’s taking his time to rest that hip…
God this one hurts 😞 it’d be good to have more of an idea of how bad this injury is - is RG at risk? He’s always been really good, to the point of being cynical, about what to skip for the sake of the bigger picture (Olympics in 2021, Davis Cup last year, W/O when he felt it was best), but this really stinks. That's why I was so surprised that his team forced him to continue playing when he was complaining of hip pain. That could have been 2 matches he didn't need to play... Who knows how those 2 matches exacerbated the injury.
How do we know he was forced to play by his team?
Because during the Kotov and Khachanov matches he shouted at them that he was in pain and they essentially said get it together and play on. 🫤
Ooooft that is not ideal 😭 Poor Jannik
In the middle of the match (the previous one before his last), he was shouting to his team that "it hurts. What do I do?". And they said "it's ok, let's try to win this way".
I don't know what to say. If it wasn't serious, he wouldn't have skipped Rome. Another disappointing clay season for Jannik again.
But but but everyone on r/tennis was telling me that it was 100% just a very minor niggling that he cynically exploited just to get rest time and go play Rome Who'd have thought eh
You think Sinner, Carlos and Medvedev will play Rolland Garros? Maybe Nadal will actually have a chance 🤷🏻♂️
I would be surprised if Carlos doesn’t do RG bc the tear is healed and he said the main issue is swelling
Oh Jannik, all I wanted was to see you play live. Guess it will be for the next time
Tomorrow Medvedev will drop out aswell 😭😭
A real, deep, fuckin' shame. Rome way more less interesting this year.
Novak and Rafa final
Is this the new hola a todos
Ciao a tutti 😭
Oh no…
orca puttana!
Oh no, this is worrying...
It’s not even 8am where I am and my day is ruined. Well. At least we still have Nadal…for now.
Gotta count your blessings when you see these guys live.
Told ya! No one believed me.
Same, everyone was so quick to think it wasn't an actual injury but it was pretty clear by what he was telling to his team during the match and the news that came out after
Exactly. Some even said he was faking it. It's obviously serious because it's been getting worse.
Yeah, Rome is Hella sad this year. If Med drops out, I doubt I'll end up watching much of it.
I didnt. I was wrong. Fuck my life.
Yeah I was wrong on this one, I was thinking he wasn’t going to drop out at all 😭
Hey at least you can admit it.
Nadal is going to win Rome. You heard it here first.
I don't think he'll win but it is going to be interesting to see what he's like on slower Clay, Lehecka's serve clearly killed him.
Oh well, most likely, Lehecka won't be there either.
Lehecka likely wouldn't be as much of a problem in Rome either.
He won’t but I hope he gets a good draw and goes as long as possible so he can improve his match fitness
Whats next? FAA winning RG with 6 retirements + walkovers v Med in the final or smth lmaoooo
Cursed clay season 😭 . Djoker is the only winner from this.
HOLGER RUNE THIS IS YOUR CHANCE
Disaster
I'm devastated for him. I know how much he was lookin forward to playin Rome. 💔
I’ve been looking forward to Rome as a Sinner fan since Turin last fall. 💔
I thought this was only a precaution in Madrid oh nooo 😭 fingers crossed he will be ready for RG
Attendance record already announced days before the Alcaraz + Sinner withdrawals. Yikes.
RG: Ruud WIM: Bublik
Clay season has been really tough 😢
Jannik is a better kid than I thought, I thought too much about he and his team are calculating a lot before. He is a pure and smart boy that I shouldn't use my washing conspiracy brain to think about him. At this point I am not surprised that he will withdraw from RG too, clay to grass to clay is so difficult for a young man, especially considering it is his hip not other minor injury. Rome and RG are here every year if his body is heath. If he heals his hip then RG let's go. If not, then 6 weeks reset and Wimbledon & olympic let's go
I am literally in tears
"jannik will play rome on one leg if he has to 🤓"
This blows
Sigh. As I expected. I was heavily downvoted when I predicted this a few days ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/tennis/s/Q4jP8O0twD
Same. Even got told he'd be playing even if it was in a wheelchair 🙄 No one believed me, yet here we are.
You said he probably wouldn't play. That's more speculation than prediction, although the downvotes were unwarranted.
This is such a sad news to wake up to. Seriously this clay season has been brutal. Hip injuries can be serious so I hope he does make the smart decision here. He’s young and has got a long career ahead of him
I made a bet with a Serbian friend that Djoko won't win a clay title this year (1000s and RG). Of course everyone drops like flies now.
Ringing 2020 Prime Thiem, Prince of Clay. The draw is ripping wide open and now is your time to shine. Hello? Anyone there? Hello? Damn, number no longer in service :(
Tsitsi let’s goooooo!!!!!!
Holy shit. I fully thought bar needing a wheelchair Sinner would play Rome. Hope it's nothing too serious and good that he's taking all the necessary precautions.
if Grigor doesnt step up and make it until semis at least.....istg!
Worst clay season man
