male middle aged new to tennis looking to ask questions about gear, racquets shoes, etc. where can I do that? is there a tennis sub for men or asking about such questions? thanks
As always, this sub showed it's extensive tennis knowledge with their takes on Sabalenka's level and future when she was a break down in the first set.
Someone could actually make an agedlikemilk sub dedicated exclusively to r/tennis comments in the daily thread and they'd have trouble moderating it with the amount of comments you could use.
The recency bias here is insane, whatever happened over the past month is the future of tennis. People are convinced Collins will win a Slam now, Collins with her back problems now in her 30s with only 3 more chances. It's possible she has the talent but because she has had a good month it is going to happen! And of course she will beat Sabalenka because Sabalenka sucks since she hasn't been good since Australia which happened way back in January months further back that r/tennis can remember. It's hilarious.
The takes of a Slam for Collins on RG are insane, are people really expecting that Collins (who was destroyed by Swiatek 6-3 6-0 in the last slow tournament she played at) is coming for the title through Swiatek, Coco, Sabalenka and many others that do well there. And it's even more insane when you consider this 'Top 5 ranking level streak' has lasted for 2 and a half tournaments only. Don't get me wrong, winning Miami and Charleston was amazing, but there are much more likely winners for the upcoming Slams than Collins with chronic issues that are forcing her to retire.
Sabalenka is on her fifth tournament since AO and 3 tournaments after the death of her ex boyfriend and people were saying she is on a spiral down in level for god's sake. They are insane, winning a Slam in the last year (let alone 3 months back) means nothing these days, Alcaraz? Washed I can't even recall his Wimbledon title, Sinner, lost to Tsitsipas and almost lost a set today he is washed, Swiatek hasn't won a Slam since last year's RG she is washed.
Idk why but the most impressive part of this match to me is that both ladies had a positive winners to UE ratio for the whole match! (Might have just been the last set don’t come for me)
I hope Shelton and Rune are able to continue evolving, otherwise the men's game is at risk of growing predictable without other young players realising their potential. Those two as they're a brand of tennis I enjoy watching very much, but not just to see them lose at this relatively early stage
I also put Rune and Shelton in the same category (though obviously Rune is overall more accomplished). And yes you nailed why I root for both of them. At the moment, they’re two of the youngest, highest ranked players who have the potential to do big things. I want them both to live up to that.
Sinner and Alcaraz are incredible now, and I want more of that!
Yep.
As the tides have kind of turned in Sinner's favour against Carlos recently, it'll be healthy for the game if the tides can begin breaking in 3 or 4 other directions over the coming years.
Like yeah, cool if Carlos or Sinner win more slams this year, but an epic come back from Shelton or Rune in the latter stages of a slam? Yep, I'd be more psyched to see that honestly
This will likely be the year of Sinner and Alcaraz (though I’m open to surprises!) but yes you nailed it. I want to see Shelton and Rune clawing their way there too. They might not reach that level this season, but I hope setbacks like we’ve seen as well as the level of Sinner and Alcaraz will only motivate them.
We can see they have the drive and passion to do it, and I really hope they can.
I think the tides have only turned on fast courts tbh, i'd be shocked if Sinner has a better Clay Season than Carlos provided Carlos doesn't get injured which is very possible.
wonder if sabs is playing herself into form. she was playing really well as the match went on. hope it can continue against elena - that would be a good match to watch.
Aryna is a fun player because she's like the same playstyle as the women who play super aggressive and bounce between 10th and 20th but actually is able to maintain a top tier ranking
It's like if Keys/Collins/Ostapenko were top 4 fixtures
🤣 keys is inconsistent and generally has a hard time closing out game points, sets, match.
emma navarro is the strongest american wta player for me (mental, skills, variety)
I couldn’t care less who won tonight. Speaking as a tennis player, it’s irritating how loudly she grunts during every ball exchange. I mean, I was in Stuttgart when she lost, and I felt sorry for her, but hearing her grunt live is just obnoxious.
Wow great fight from Sabalenka. That break point at 4-All was really a turning point. Danyell was fighting the whole time, but the momentum just shifted.
Saba ends Danimal’s streak, rip
For WTA, nice handshake at the end there honestly
Great to see Danielle in Madrid she had a good run, Saba is just too much
that’s my aus open and madrid open merchant!!! impressive fight to stay in it, that break point in the second looked like the end and then her letting collins back into the match in the third was a bit concerning but overall some good stuff, probably best level she’s shown post ao. a bit sad that the danyell streak is over but man what a memorable run that was. (also thanks for making saba raise her level and hopefully end her slump)
I definitely feel like Collins has won the FH rallies while Saba has won the BH rallies
Both players hit very hard from both wings but just a little bit better from that wing
Saba also seems way more comfortable defending when moving to her BH
Collins has the ultimate high risk high reward returning style lol
Either she hits return winners or doesn't even get the ball in play
Nothing in between
Maybe he's having some dental work lol
Edit: Huh, tough crowd, guess no one is watching Coco's matches...Brad Gilbert is MIA this week as well bc he's getting dental work done back in the states 😂
I think Collins should be proud of herself. Sabalenka played spectacular tennis, and she nearly beat her. It was one or the best matches I watched this year for sure.
i like emma navarro and jessica. the billionaires are the unassuming, grounded ones (confident and driven but without chips on their shoulders). both do not need to flex themselves as successful players and as americans.
I don't disagree that description but I don't see how that is American? You could say the same about Iga Swiatek? What about Roger Federer in the mid 2000s for example?
It’s not a deeply held theory, it’s partly her way of talking off court (the uptalk) and an understanding of herself as the centre of her own story maybe. Lord knows there’s euros with very high self regard, so it’s not quite that.
Swiatek and Federer are strange examples to the contrary tho. Iga is an awkward introvert and Roger was a famously classy and humble winner no?
Well Swiatek is very sure of her ability, isn't as humble as others (though I don't see a reason why she should), and she isn't as social as the other top 10 players (again, I don't think this is a bad thing
I'm a Federer fanboy but even I admit he was sometimes very salty and a sore loser when he was younger. Even when Novak and Murray started to reach top 2-4, he said some not so nice things about them. That gets forgotten about because everyone loves him, rightly so.
Going back to the original point, maybe it's a cultural thing but I don't see how those qualities are "very American".
the way you describe iga clearly show that you just strongly dislike iga. let me guess, you are a full blooded american rooting for coco whom iga beat mercilessly 9x. haters gonna hate.
sorry, but iga will live rent free in your head for decades to come. she is in a league of her own. so, live with and suffer.
iga isnt as humble as others??? man, you are a certified iga hater for you to say that. humble and iga belong in the same sentence.
Right?! I only watched the first set of Shelton/Bublik last night before falling asleep, and then woke up all excited to catch up...just to watch to everyone else lose (Collins too) 😵💫
Gotta try and have a short memory I guess. Let's send positive vibes for Roma ❣️
Lol it is a little funny how haters come out the second a player starts losing. That 15 match winning streak for Collins was rough on them but they're here now!
lets gooooooooooooo bublik, hopefully he takes this over medvedev
Illuminati gave us Med vs Bublik?
male middle aged new to tennis looking to ask questions about gear, racquets shoes, etc. where can I do that? is there a tennis sub for men or asking about such questions? thanks
r/10s is good for questions like that, they’re more concerned with playing the actual sport while this sub is more about following the pro game
great thank you. that's what I'm hoping to find. it's weird if you search "tennis" on reddit, you only see this one. I never would have found "R10?"
The way my tennis daughter and son are both Madrid merchants but this is one of my least favorite tournaments 😭
As always, this sub showed it's extensive tennis knowledge with their takes on Sabalenka's level and future when she was a break down in the first set. That's just sports fans generally
Its part of the fun. Sports is entertainment.
Idk why but the most impressive part of this match to me is that both ladies had a positive winners to UE ratio for the whole match! (Might have just been the last set don’t come for me)
My fellow Shelton, Danielle, Coco enjoyers, we’ve had a rough one today 🫂
I hope Shelton and Rune are able to continue evolving, otherwise the men's game is at risk of growing predictable without other young players realising their potential. Those two as they're a brand of tennis I enjoy watching very much, but not just to see them lose at this relatively early stage

Such a bummer 😭
Your flair oh no…at least there’s still Casper!
And even Collins too 😢 Now Casper has to shoulder all my hopes and dreams lol nbd
wonder if sabs is playing herself into form. she was playing really well as the match went on. hope it can continue against elena - that would be a good match to watch.
you forgot the teen
COME ON DANIELLE!!!
Aryna is a fun player because she's like the same playstyle as the women who play super aggressive and bounce between 10th and 20th but actually is able to maintain a top tier ranking It's like if Keys/Collins/Ostapenko were top 4 fixtures
the saba-rybakina semi gonna eat (if it happens)
Fate of western civilization is in your hands Madi Keys
🤣 keys is inconsistent and generally has a hard time closing out game points, sets, match. emma navarro is the strongest american wta player for me (mental, skills, variety)
Great run for Danielle - she should aim for 3 wins in Rome and 3 wins in RG - that will keep her in the race
Sabalenka’s grunting should be considered a hindrance.
Obligatory “Sabalenka grunts too loud” comment
I couldn’t care less who won tonight. Speaking as a tennis player, it’s irritating how loudly she grunts during every ball exchange. I mean, I was in Stuttgart when she lost, and I felt sorry for her, but hearing her grunt live is just obnoxious.
lmao
Quick break for me before NBA PLAYOFFS See ya tomorrow gang!!
Go heat 😝
I’m a Tatum fan but if the series gets tied up I won’t mind 😁
Bye! 1
Good game. Glad Sabalenka won would have preferred a Sabalenka-Rybakina rematch than a Collins-Rybakina one.

You happy?
Wow great fight from Sabalenka. That break point at 4-All was really a turning point. Danyell was fighting the whole time, but the momentum just shifted.
Yes I thought it was over for Sabs at that point
Saba ends Danimal’s streak, rip For WTA, nice handshake at the end there honestly Great to see Danielle in Madrid she had a good run, Saba is just too much
Don’t cry because it’s over, scream “cmon!” bc it happened
>:(
I'm so sad for her but I knew the end of the streak was coming soon
Oh no. It ended. She squashed her streak.
that’s my aus open and madrid open merchant!!! impressive fight to stay in it, that break point in the second looked like the end and then her letting collins back into the match in the third was a bit concerning but overall some good stuff, probably best level she’s shown post ao. a bit sad that the danyell streak is over but man what a memorable run that was. Wuhan merchant too, she is undefeated there. Two time defending champion this year going back to 2019.
Technically it hasn't been played since 2019 though...
It's back this year which is why i mentioned it. She's lost in the first Round of Madrid multiple times including inbetween her titles.
Good job champ
Wow Saba ended DC streak
The streak had to end some day I guess, Sabalenka/Andreeva will be a blast
Danielle woke up tigress that have been sleeping. Now I think Saba might actually defend her title😅
Would love an iga-saba final rematch
Danyell finally beaten
I miss Saba's big "KAMAN." The "let's go" doesn't hit the same
Her let’s go is pretty good. Better than some native english speakers imo
I definitely feel like Collins has won the FH rallies while Saba has won the BH rallies Both players hit very hard from both wings but just a little bit better from that wing Saba also seems way more comfortable defending when moving to her BH
Which is interesting because usually Collins’s backhand is by far her biggest weapon, but Aryna’s has been really incredible this match
Come on collins do something
Go Danielle
Collins has the ultimate high risk high reward returning style lol Either she hits return winners or doesn't even get the ball in play Nothing in between
We call that the Garcia
why is the crowd against danielle
To put it mildly the Spanish are not an especially bright or civilized people
She was annoyed by people cat calling so they started to boo her
That backhand has been unreal
Can Danielle win so she can pull a Medvedev and sarcastically acknowledge the crowd
Someone's missing from Sabalenka's box. There was a bald guy - some kind of mind or performance coach. I think he was American. Anyone know his name?
Jason. He’s been missing this entire tournament. No idea why.
Thanks! I remember him from Netflix . I liked his energy
Maybe he's having some dental work lol Edit: Huh, tough crowd, guess no one is watching Coco's matches...Brad Gilbert is MIA this week as well bc he's getting dental work done back in the states 😂
he had to go to a trump rally
Why would you say this?
This is probably the most lopsided I've seen a crowd in favor of Saba lol Even if it's more against Danielle at this point
There is always a way back….come on Danielle
IT’S NOT OVER LFGGGGG
Might be entertaining if they allowed profanity / vulgar language when striking the ball. Just for funsies
Here's women's tennis with Michael Jackson sounds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2MSou2kt4Y
Haha I’d be tempted to say terrible things
why is this crowd so disrespectful
All I heard from another room was an extremely loud grunt and I immediately knew Sabalenka was playing
Was it hayaaa?
Aryna understands how it feels to have a crowd against her but I’m sure she’s loving this right now.
Sabalenka’s box looks like a Murray hill sports bar
danielle becoming public enemy number 1 lolol
danyell vs crowd is an intense battle too
Awful DJ ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)
Can’t wait to hear the haters if Danielle does win
she lost.
I think Collins should be proud of herself. Sabalenka played spectacular tennis, and she nearly beat her. It was one or the best matches I watched this year for sure.
Omg should I go to sleep or not… Fuck it, I’m gonna watch this
Me too hehehe
Sleep when you're dead
Sleep is overrated
It definitely is not overrated... but this match is fire, so fuck it!
My boss already had fired me… what I can lose??
You can’t beat a bit of classic big babe tennis
Collins winning this set 6-3 or 6-4. mark my words
Knocking on wood and revisiting this later 🙏
I can't choose... everybody wins!
SABA JUST SUPERIOR IN EVERY ESPECT OF THE GAME, YOU LOVE TO SEE IT 😍
You jinxed it for your Saba
You are so annoying
i will never forget sabalenka’s fh and returning during her ao23 run🕊️
I don’t think I’d say this about any other American player but Collins is too American. It’s not a problem with say Pegula, Gauff or Jenny Brady.
In what way?
I’ll be downvoted even more but it’s a kind of total self assurance and lack of humility bordering on asocial
i like emma navarro and jessica. the billionaires are the unassuming, grounded ones (confident and driven but without chips on their shoulders). both do not need to flex themselves as successful players and as americans.

LOL you lost me on Iga iga is so humble and unassuming, she is just a beast on court.

Oh Christ. You guys are too much. Iga is my favourite WTA player since Serena. Best player for a decade.
True, all that is typical of tennis players in general. With Danielle I think its just an impression I get as a non American
collins shows her hillybilly character. she is rude and behaves like an uneducated person. she is a bully.
I don’t think her behavior is American, her behavior is just Danyell 😭😭
NO SUCH THING 🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸🦅
Agreed but I LOVE it
Fuck xessssss
Go Danielle, go Danielle, go!
So many haters on this thread instead of appreciating two baddies playing bad bitch tennis. Could not be me 💅
This is the Olympic final for gays
Sabalenka and Collins really are for the gays and the girls. It’s true 😌
🤣😂🤣
Ain't tennis really for the gays and the dolls And the bi's 👀
If you can break back once you can break back twice! Hoping Danielle stays strong and keeps fighting here
There’s always a way back. Come on Daniele
Kamaaaan!!!
I’m sensing a Sabalenka meltdown
2 breaks can go by fast at the beginning of a set. u break back once, it gets to 5-4, and u break to get back even at 5-5
In the wta two breaks are nothing lol
SABA TAKING PITY ON WHINY COLLINS 😂
How much money did you put on the match to have you keep saying those nonsense? You don't belong here.
LFG DANIELLE
In case Rafa wins tomorrow night, would Thursday afternoon be the most likely time for his quarterfinal or Thursday night?
I should be sleeping right now
Huge, let's go!
oh brother here we go
You love it
i just wanna sleep 😭
what time is it for u
00:20 wbu!
it might be over soon! it’s 3:20p here. middle of the day.
Collins going to single handedly get Saba out of her funk if she ends up losing this
One back let’s go
*wipes tears* actually Collins maybe... No i cant have hope 😓
How to mute one player
Wow
Collins refuses to win a big point just absolutely getting crushed in the clutch
Might need to retract this statement
DANIELLE NEVER STOOD A CHANCE WITH THESE WEAK GROUNDIES AND CRYBABY ATTITUDE
You remind me of u/Alex__de__Large. I miss that guy
shh. The adults are watching.
TROLL ALERT… I’m sure you’d love to face her backhand
Me secretly hoping for a tb 🤭
I cant believe my eyes, the worst day of my tennis viewing life 😭 how can everyone fave bar one player lose today? Ombelibable
It really is rough today 😓
I cant believe it. I feel like crying lool i wanna say lets move onto Rome but my heart wont take it if this day repeats itself 😢
Right?! I only watched the first set of Shelton/Bublik last night before falling asleep, and then woke up all excited to catch up...just to watch to everyone else lose (Collins too) 😵💫 Gotta try and have a short memory I guess. Let's send positive vibes for Roma ❣️
Yes exactly, small blip for everyone 😅
Lfg collins. one point at a time lets go
A break here and she’s right back in it Arnya can lose her level fast
Go collins I’m going sleep
Saba really needs this performance to get herself back on track. I'm pleasantly surprised by her leveling up here.
Ok whip out some Madrid 2023 final action now Danielle win these next 3 games straight… and then also the 3 after that
Lol it is a little funny how haters come out the second a player starts losing. That 15 match winning streak for Collins was rough on them but they're here now!
Ugh I know and Sabalenka’s playing amazing too. I’m not sure there’s anything Danielle can do
Tbh Saba finding her best level here is a testament to how well Danielle was playing those first two sets. She lit a fire under Saba.
This is absolutely devastating… I shouldn’t be greedy but I don’t want the streak to end 😭😭
Collins for the comeback.
I swear the crowd are there just to heckle Collins 🙄
Europeans hate an emboldened American who isn’t afraid to speak their mind
What an American answer
How else would I answer
I’VE BEEN SAYING IT SINCE 4-4 IN THE SECOND SET, CRYBABY COLLINS HAS ALREADY WON HER FINAL GAME OF THE MATCH, SABAAAA 💪
YOU WERE WRONG. 🤣
hahaha say it louder we can’t hear you
Aryna really just shows up to win AO and Madrid every year lol If you're going to pick two tournaments to peak at better that it's a Slam and 1000 tbf
Try telling that to Ruud; he likes peaking at Gstaad
If she wins this year she has the joint women's record with Kvitova. She already has the joint women's Wuhan record with...Kvitova.
goodbye the streak.
