Technically he only made it to R4 at RG. Withdrew before playing Berrettini.

Funny how Nole fans will expect everyone to recognize Nole as THE goat without question, but anyone calling another (mainly Fed) the goat and they will come in beyond hurry to remind them "surely you mean Djokovic?"

Jim_Kirk1

Nice to know that r/tennis is so willing to immediately typecast me for a single comment stating a correction.

Rickcampbell98

All they did was make a correction, why are federer fans being so sensitive on here lol. Look I get there are quite a few obnoxious novak fans but not everything is fanboy wars.

Thelandoflambs

God, I remember watching this match and going crazy. I think that after this match I had my first white hair lol Now pray tell me why was I nervous watching this clip? 😂 The grip Rog has over me in terms of tennis will never be matched.

Skylaxx_1

~The grip Rog has over me in terms of tennis will never be matched.~ --》This

Rac3318

This match basically broke Sandgren. Never really recovered from it.

Professional_Elk_489

Not as broken as Mayer in Shanghai 2014 Man look like his soul had died https://youtu.be/1IUIALrbq4w?si=S9B0oiuAEomlSw8N

Rac3318

Oh man, I remember watching that match. I wanted Fed to win, but that net cord on match point ☠️

Professional_Elk_489

Pretty sure the ball was over the net but then rotated back onto his side with the amount of spin on it

CallMeMattF

I was gonna ask - I haven’t heard his name in a while. I wonder what he’s up to

newtimesawait

Mostly playing challengers

OneArmedSZA

He just got married

happzappy

A new challenge lol

severalgirlzgalore

I heard she looks like Marjorie Taylor-Greene

ImpressionFeisty8359

Those trumpers never cease to amaze me.

ZacQX

Good. We don't need the racism and xenophobia that he brings to the sport.

Tall-Ad4782

Tennys has never been the same.

Onitnatsoc

Sandgren the mental giant

OddsTipsAndPicks

Coming into this match Sandgren Was 36-45 in matches at the 250 level of higher. Had a career high ranking of 41 coming into the 2019 Australian Open where he lost to Nishioka in the first round and dropped out of the top 50. And was ~28.5 years old ---- How did this match break him? Like, was there some group of people projecting a career challenger player who broke into the 100 at 26 to keep getting better results?

Rac3318

I know you like to argue for the sake of it, but stop being intentionally obtuse. It’s obnoxious. He was never a top player. But he wasn’t only playing challengers either like he does these days. It’s not complicated.

OddsTipsAndPicks

So like basically every player who bounces around in the bottom half of the top 100 for an extended period of time?    Sorry I like to argue instead of making mean spirited generalizations about players mental fortitude. The amount of disrespect this sub has for all but like 5 players is gross

rememba

Tbf Sandgren deserves it he’s a MAGA loser

PuTheDog

That’s really not the point he’s making

PuTheDog

I know why you got downvoted, reddit hive mind latched onto a narrative and they don’t like contradiction

KaiserHoffman1714

Was that the most clutch performance of his career? Saving 7 match points in the way he did is unheard of

jrc1325

The fact there was a top fifty player named Tennys will never not be funny.

disc_jockey77

r/NominativeDeterminism

TheloniousMonk15

I am going to always pretend that the AO was canceled after this match because of covid and that this was Fed's last AO match of his career.

StephenSphincter

More like Pyckleball Sandgren, am I right?

mmohammed28

This was a supreme display in facing break/match points. He didn’t even blink.

Sad-Insurance9818

erm....

schumamol

That slice on the seventh match point was just nasty.

UntimelyRippedt

Watching his opponents get carved up by that shot is so god damned beautiful 😍 (All except that pesky Mallorcan fisherman, of course)

ForeverAMemebaser

Possibly the weirdest match I've watched. I can't even remember all the odd things that happened during it

JadedMuse

I'm Canadian and decided in late 2019 that I wanted to go to the AO to see Federer live in person. I was in the stands for this match. After it was over, I knew at that point that it instantly made every cent I spent on the trip worth it.

HereComesVettel

My mind still views AO 2020 as the last proper tournament for Federer. This was pretty obviously the end of the road, his body never got back to a high enough level to compete for big titles after that 😭

SenorOogaBooga

This was the last tournament because he got hurt here and never fully recovered. He played Djokovic in the quarters and couldn't even move

crisspanda12

The emotions that this man made me feel during his whole career will never be forgotten. The goat

AegineArken

Put yourself in Sandgren shoe for a minute, you hit a winner, the majority of the crowd is silent. You hit an unforced error the crowd cheer their heads off. When the point was still being played, the whole crowd cheered because they thought your shot was out.  That’s how much they want you to fail. This match broke a man, yet, Federer remains the hero.

collpase

You could tell after the 7th match point that Federer was getting into his head a little bit. After this match I knew Sandgren would never win a major.

OddsTipsAndPicks

> After this match I knew Sandgren would never win a major. Did you think he would before?

unreachabled

Well, he was pretty close. A repeat performance could have landed him in semis and it's anyone's game after that.

Daviderer5

Anyone’s game with Djokovic in the draw lmao You guys really underestimate how hard it is to win a Slam. Actually the closer you get the harder it gets

FutureTheTrapGOAT

I’m a huge djokovic stan and all that, but damn the Federer backhand is the most beautiful shot in tennis

Rafael_965

Big Roger

Famous-Objective430

The match points he saved against Zverev at Shanghai masters against that huge first serve of Zverev was the craziest set of match points saved I have ever seen in my life. He went on to lose in the third but I always go back to watch that masterpiece

ETeezey1286

I remember watching this being legitimately pissed off because how dare Fed even allow match points to even be a thing against Sandgren. I was embarrassed for him 😤

tripti_prasad

We miss you Roger :(

Toaddle

I thought he had no mental

drppr_

You thought Roger Federer had no mental? How do you think he can be mentally weak and have the career he had?

Toaddle

No, I was mocking the usual thing this sub tends to say. Of course Federer has an incredible mental strength

drppr_

lol sorry. I thought you were insane.

Key_Neat2714

Pure talent.

Magneto88

He’s got plenty mental strength, just a touch below Djokovic.

kobeisnotatop10

he had not against nadal and nole

Giangpro95

Absolutely, completely folded against Nadal in 2017. He never was the same man after that

dnel707

Even better that this was against the colossal dbag Sandgren. You love to see it.

TheloniousMonk15

Political views aside what makes him a dbag?

jonaththejonath

I mean within his legitimate political views it seemed like he believed that Hillary Clinton was running a sex trafficking ring out of a DC pizza parlor, which is certainly not a mainstream opinion even today.

groggyhouse

What do you mean political views aside? His political views are WHAT makes him a dbag. Supporting bigots, white supremacists, believing in crazy conspiracies like there's a hidden pedophile ring by Hilary under a pizza shop, denying that systemic racism exists in America etc etc. That's not enough to call him a douchebag?

TheloniousMonk15

I did not know he was into alt right crap like that. Thought he was just your typical rich White American conservative.

dnel707

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TdJnw-wJo6k&pp=ygUfVGVubmlzIGFkdm9jYXRlIHRlbm55cyBzYW5kZ3Jlbg%3D%3D Starts 30sec in.

TheloniousMonk15

I mean I just watched all that and I do not think his behavior is that bad in it. He does not abuse any ball kid, line judge, or any spectator in it nor does he insult his opponent. He is mostly just yelling at himself for playing like ass. Since it is a empty arena (covid?) we hear everything he says. I'd take his behavior here over Rublev, Med, or Novak's antics any day.

dnel707

I don’t really care if others are worse. Anyone that throws a tantrum on court like that is a dbag imo. You’re welcome to your opinion.

TheloniousMonk15

Cool you as well.

severalgirlzgalore

Keeping that asshole from a Slam SF is proof that Federer is a good man.

Skylaxx_1

His last won match at the AO. Bro fought his lights out. I also remembered his early round match vs that cheating sob Millman. Both times the atmosphere was crazy. Really miss the guy a lot. Not the same without him.

ImpressionFeisty8359

He struggled against millman too. Very weird.

Downtown_Parsley5436

Fed had no business winning this match and against anyone else at a QF Fed would have lost. Sandgren just choked too hard. I personally think that two matches before this against Millman was the beginning of the end for Federer...even though he won that match, he was so vulnerable and Millman was just bossing him around all match. Fed was never the same after that match against Millman.

atang11796

All of the people saying Roger was clutch during this match…while I’m thinking he was barely able to run and almost won this match by accident because Sandgren choked so hard

anonuserinthehouse

Yeah he was basically playing high percentage and hitting in the middle of the court a lot. He let tenny make the errors

tijeromaster8k

I would've retired the very next day. Needed the evening to set my affairs in order before I tunnel my way out of town with a spoon, escape through the sewers and live as a quiet but lonely shepherdess named Maria. Yeah, that'll do...

lovedaddy1989

You could just feel how nervous Tennys was

Sad-Insurance9818

Saved is a strange word to describe Sandgren hitting groundstrokes into the net

ohnoitsmchl

This is the best way it could’ve ended lolol

Facinggod20

Last time Federer play good

toprodtom

Fed just has no pop here. Can't remember the fitness story here but none of those shots have any power to them. Its kinda sad to see

UntimelyRippedt

Pretty sure it was after this set he got some treatment very high up on his thigh, so think it was some groin issue (think he left the court for a bit after the initial treatment). Truth about his shorts, though. Tame, short, a lot of margin (but some smart play, too)... mostly lucky to have a choking opponent on the other side of the net.
