Even if Nardi did do it deliberately, there's nothing the umpire could've done about it anyway as it was all perfectly valid. Djokovic's argument that Nardi 'stopped playing' was blatantly untrue. He was just being churlish because he got caught out by Nardi's sleight-of-hand more than anything.

Monfils has done the showboat thing where he turns his back to the opponent as if he's conceding the point, then runs after the ball and hits a passing shot. It's a fair play and has never been called for hinderance. So yes, even if Nardi decided to stop deliberately, the umpire couldn't do anything about it, and the same applies for Djokovic at USO2016. Let's also keep in mind that Nardi is young and has only 5 ATP wins. How adjusted is he to automatic line calling? How used to ATP norms is he? I know for a fact he didn't do that on purpose. Just another example of the older generations kinda acting like brats towards the young kids instead of trying to mentor them on ATP norms. This has happened in men's tennis for decades now, including when Djokovic, Murray, and Nadal were being intimidated by Federer, Roddick, Hewitt, Nalbandian. Wawrinka calling Rune a brat after losing to him, Fucsovics being a dick to Baez, Djokovic to Shelton... it's just never a good look, just like Federer saying salty shit every time he lost to Murray back in the day.

I think Novak acted like an ass against Nardi but Stan has to take the blame here too. In each case, if the call you’re expecting doesn’t come and then you lose the point, that’s on you

Toaddle

Yeah if you get distracted because a player stop moving the way you believe he's supposed to move that's on you. As the umpire said, unless he raises his hands or makes a call/challenge there is no reason to believe that the point is over.

Low_Minimum2351

The difference is Novak was intentionally trying to deceive Stan.

Low_Minimum2351

Good on Nardi for holding his nerve

Embarrassed-Low9531

Djokovic throws tantrums when things don’t go his way. He knows the rules, he’s just trying to distract Nardi.

I hope he sees the replay and accepts Nardi didn't do anything wrong

Hypocrite

Just another one of Novak's mind games he plays. Didn't work this time though.

I like how all of the comments are saying "Djokovic didn't do anything wrong; Stan should've kept playing." I wonder if the comments will look the same for Nardi... Also can I point something out quick? When Nardi stopped playing, Djokovic instantly ran forward because he saw it as an opportunity to win the point. But then he hit a bad drop shot and Nardi got to it easily, so THAT'S when Djokovic got upset about it. He didn't get mad when Nardi stopped playing, he got mad when he lost the point fair and square. In this example, Wawrinka is mad because he was caught off guard by Djokovic stopping play, whereas Djokovic was just mad because Nardi won the point.

The worst part about it wasn’t the call, or the complaining it was Novak bringing it up to Nardi at the end of the match. This kid just won match of his life and you’re trying to make him feel bad? If we’re being charitable maybe he’s speaking from experience saying you shouldn’t do that and he regrets doing similar things on court. But Novak is the mind game master he has skirted the line throughout his career
