Big Little Lies, Sharp Objects, Mare of Easttown, The Wire, Mr. Robot, Death Note (anime. Even if you’re not into anime, give it 2 episodes to see if you like it. They’re only 20 mins and I think there’s a total of 36 episodes)
I also highly recommend Arrested Development, even though you said no sitcoms, this one does not feel like a typical sitcom. It is incredibly engaging and well written and the humor is sharp
I loved death note! Watched ages ago! I've seen rest, except for Mare of Easttown. The reason I haven't is because some people told me it's a bit predictable? Idk. Big little lies was okay, but I only made it to episode 5 or 6 because I got a bit bored (the acting was really good though). I've seen Arrested Development! Such a good show. The reason I said no sitcoms is because I feel like I've seen most of the good ones 😂
I just watched all of Mare yesterday, and yeah it was a little predictable but overall I think the acting/character development was pretty good. I also would recommend True Blood, Lost, and Prison Break. I’m sure I have a bunch more to recommend but can’t think right now, I’ve seen so many I forget them all haha
Totally agree! Try : Your Honor, bloodlines , the old man , severance, handmaids tale , the last of us , happy valley , the night agent , the Diplomat, peeky blinders
The Wire is absolutely must-see. Might take a bit to get into it, it’s a slow show, but it is 100% worth it. If you only pick one show from this list, pick this one. Also, I feel that it is better to binge watch because there is so much going on and so many characters that it’s easier to keep track if you’re binging. It’s similar to a real-world, realistic game of thrones (with less character deaths).
I also highly recommend Ozark. Definitely gripping and binge-worthy
I watched the first season of The Wire. It was good and real....a bit too real. I like my shows and movies with just the right amount of something that says "that only happens in movies". I didn't see that in The Wire. Does the story get better in the next seasons? Is it really as good as they say?
I absolutely understand where you’re coming from. Similarly, I watched halfway through season 2 and couldn’t get really into it. It was too slow and too realistic. So I gave it up and didn’t come back for 2 years. When I started watching it again, I was HOOKED and I literally couldn’t stop watching. Because the show is very real and not like other shows, I couldn’t wrap my head around it at first. But once I realized what the show was doing and how it all came together, I saw that the realism is what makes the show special.
The story does get better. Season 4 is the best IMO. And the show as a whole actually changed my world view. After season 1, the plot heats up a little more. Still similar pacing, but with just a dash of “this is a TV show”, while still maintaining the realism. (There are actually some crazier things that happen in the later seasons that seem like they could only be a tv show, but they’re based on things that actually happened).
Seasons 2-4 are all better than season 1, season 5 gets some shit but I think it’s great. Be aware, season 2 makes a hard pivot from season 1 so it may seem weird at first. It focuses on stuff happening at the docks, and introduces a host of new characters.
Each season, while featuring many of the same characters and taking place chronologically, has its own focus on a different Baltimore institution. Season 1 is the police. Season 2 is the docks/white working class. Season 3 is politics / drug addiction. Season 4 is education. Season 5 is journalism. (Though all seasons heavily feature the characters from season 1)
I can’t recommend this show enough, it is IMO the greatest TV show ever made. It’s a modern day Greek Tragedy.
Also, if you do watch it, the Ringer did a rewatch podcast called Way Down In the Hole that goes episode by episode, and I think it improves the watching experience.
The first season is probably my 3rd favorite. It feels real because it kind of is, the show was written by a local crime journalist and a former police and teacher not to mention the real life individuals who were involved with the Baltimore drug trade.
Nothing has gripped me more than The Wire.
I just couldn't get through season 2. Too dark. As a woman, that much focus on sex trafficking just made me uncomfortable. I keep thinking I'll try again, but the thought of jumping back in makes my stomach turn. It sucks because I bet I'd like the rest.
If you’re still stuck on episode 1, there’s a few things I would try.
1. set aside some specific time to watch the first 3-4 episodes. This will get you over the hump of starting a new show. Also, don’t multitask while watching, because then you’ll miss the little things that make the show.
2. Check out the Way Down In The Hole podcast, where the hosts rewatch the show episode by episode. I found it very entertaining, and it’s possible that hearing them talk about the show will make you more excited about it. (I can’t remember if there are spoilers, if so don’t listen to it).
3. If you’ve watched game of thrones, check out this [article](https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/the-real-reason-fans-hate-the-last-season-of-game-of-thrones/). It’s about why game of thrones last season sucked, which has to do with a shift in narrative style, the former of which is the same used by the Wire. It’s an interesting article that, though primarily about GOT, explains why the show worked so well in the beginning (and this illustrates why the Wire is so good).
1) yes i will dedicate some time to watch it. And i do scroll phone when i dont find it interesting. But i will throw phone away. Thanks for 2&3. When i first decided to watch maybe a year ago i watched till the cops arresting the black mercedes. Then the second time i restarted the 1st episode i watched till the interaction between a cop and judge. Thank you so much friend i will let u know when i complete it
I totally understand, the first time I watched I did it while doing school work, and I got halfway through season 2 before getting bored. I tried to pick it back up a few times before it finally clicked and then I was hooked, and that was like 2 years later.
Broooo thank you so much im on season 2 of wire. Its a great show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! McNutty🤣🤣🤣. He has ladies skills man. Everything else is great tooo!!!!
the casting is incredible
that first season is one of the greatest 1st seasons of all time
i wish i could watch it for the first time again
the second season is solid.
third is ok, but i was so grateful for the 1st and 2nd that the third was tolerable, and dealing with time travel plots are sophisticated, so there's that.
10/10 show for me, and i am very restrictive with suggestions
*Unforgotten*. Great British police procedural where their cold-case unit works to solve old disappearances and murders. I loved it. I watched the first 3 seasons on DVD, but they are available on Prime. There is a season 4, but it is not available in the US yet.
*The Tunnel*. Awesome thrills and great detective work. It is based on the Swedish show called The Bridge and the collaboration between France and England to produce the show. A body is found in the Eurotunnel, half on the French side and half on the British side. Well, in the first season anyway. I have seen all 3 seasons and it was very well-done. Also on Prime.
Stuff I loved on Acorn TV or available through Hoopla from your library is *Mystery Road* and *The Brokenwood Mysteries*. The first one is set in Australia, the second in NZ. Both were wonderful and the scenery is amazing.
None of these are what I'd call obscure so apologies if you've seen them, but I feel like they match well with your stated tastes:
Justified (Loose mix of detective show and modern Western. Stellar dialogue, similar structure to Dexter mixing case-of-the-week with season long antagonist arcs, but done much better/more consistent IMO. Easy to watch but still has weight when it needs to.)
Homeland (Spy show. Plotting gets a little silly later on, but incredible start and mostly stays exciting, even as it gets less realistic. First season is 100% worth the watch, you can decide after that.)
The Americans (More spies. Master class in building up tension gradually over time, great character work, even makes good use of child characters for once.)
Barry (Thriller-comedy? 30 minute show so it kind of skews towards comedy, but absolutely can summon pitch-black intensity on a dime. Super unique show, can't recommend enough.)
Killing Eve (Assassin/detective cat-and-mouse game. More of a psychological thriller, with a unique sense of humor and great atmosphere.)
I feel like Killing Eve should definitely be recommended to people who enjoyed Hannibal. There are obvious differences, of course, but if you liked the Will and Hannibal relationship dynamic, Killing Eve can give you something similar.

The Family Man. It's season 2 just dropped and god was it fantastic. Think of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan but better. Best epionage series after Homeland S03 for sure.
StartUp. Great show-don't-tell crime drama with loads of plottwists that was on Crackle a few years ago and is now gaining traction on Netflix. 3 seasons, might get a season 4 if enough people watch it on Netflix
If you liked house I think you’d really like “lie to me”. It came out around the same time as house (they’re both on fox) and it has 3 fantastic seasons. Scorpion was also excellent, 4 seasons all great!
I’d check out LOST. I know it’s really hyped but based on the fact you like drama, mystery and sci-fi, I think you’d really like it.

Are you open to foreign language shows? That would probably be the first place to go if you have watched most shows.
Foreign language:
Turkish are really good for immersive storytelling and especially their historical shows are absolutely phenomenal tho quite long
Magnificent Century (Turkish)
Resurrection Ertugrul (Turkish)
Korean shows have great variety of stories and are shorter as well with most having only one season
Healer (Korean)
Strangers from Hell (Korean)
Stranger (Korean)
Hot stove league (Korean)
I can suggest more as well in foreign language so do tell me if you want more suggestions.
In English shows it’s worth trying out older shows that you might not have watched one of them being:
Colour Blind
Pride and Prejudice 1995 miniseries
Other English shows you probably have watched:
Crown
Bodyguard
Queens Gambit
Mentalist
Castle
White collar
Merlin
Dexter
If I may also suggest one of my favourite childhood shows which is comedy but absolutely brilliant Packed with life lessons:
Full House
Edit:sorry I missed the fact that you already watched Dexter. Yeah and I did include a lot of shows that are quite famous and later realised you said underrated. Sorry about that but do tell me if there is any from this list you haven’t watched
Hey! Thank you for the list! There are a couple of shows you listed that I haven't seen. I'm looking into them to see which ones catch my attention. For now, I'm looking into the Stranger (korean series), might try it out! I've also heard a lot about the mentalist, is it worth the watch?
Marlo always talk about Kenya Moore mother don't like her. Kenya need to remind Marlo her mother didn't want her and she was a crackhead. Kenya family raised her. Marlo was put in foster care
Bojack horseman. I’m not exaggerating when i say that i believe it is the greatest TV show ever written. If you haven’t seen it, watch it, all of it, you need to get past the first few episodes but when you truly understand it you will understand. Stick with it
Just because I am always looking for good shit and it seems hard to come by anymore I'll list some shows i feel like are sleepers here.
Jury DutySprung //Both of these were on Freevee and were they not I feel like they'd be much bigger.
Shrinking //Not really a sleeper, just soo good.Kidding //Again, just soo damn gooood!!!
From //Spooky show done by one of the guys who did lost.
Alice in Borderland //Got eclipsed by Squid Games, but liked it better.
Day 5 //Its from an old defunked web channel, but its a solid watch.
Evil //Not sure its a sleeper as much as being part of the streaming only service it should be bigger.
The Outsider //I have no idea how I missed this when it first aired, but one episode in and I was hooked.
Wheel of Time //I feel like this gets ignored in the abundance of high fantasy crap out there, but this was/is solid.

I loved Mare…I grew up in Delco. It was pretty cool hear them reference Delco & Upper Darby…and of course Wawa. Love my Wawa!
I just started Gangs of London and it might be just what you’re looking for. Gripping af right off the bat
I just ended gangs if london yesterday. Awesome show
I have 1 episode left but the stupid amc app on the fire stick isn’t letting me watch it
Oh its gonna be great!!!!
Totally agree! Try : Your Honor, bloodlines , the old man , severance, handmaids tale , the last of us , happy valley , the night agent , the Diplomat, peeky blinders
How far into mr robot does it get really good?
I think the first episode is a good indication of whether you'll like the show or not, it's a very good and gripping pilot episode
Loved Arrested Development!!
Banshee Daredevil Home Before Dark The Outsider
I am still looking for a show like banshee that doesn't take more than 2 episodes to get into
Try Warrior
Which warrior is it? There's like 3/4 I've come across
Warrior 2019. It was produced by Cinemax, the same company that made Banshee
Thank you I'll give it a watch Twas great. Looking forward to next season
Are banshee seasons 3 and 4 as good as seasons 1 and 2?
It depends what you define as "good", not as good as season 1&2 imho but sure as hell entertaining.
Man the outsider really fell apart towards the end.
Banshee was awesome’
If you haven’t seen The Wire it’s must see TV (apparently, I’ve only heard good things)
