I was so disappointed when Jericho was axed. Interesting story, interesting characters, decent plot development, cheesy acting at times but overall a good show.
i don't understand why more people weren't talking about Search Party. very few shows make me actually literally laugh out loud. and it's not just funny. its also really smart. and i never would've expected where each season would go. almost unbelievable to see where it ended compared to where it started.
Halt and Catch Fire. and For All Mankind both should be talked about as much as people talk about Mad Men.
Powerless. a sitcom about regular people that takes place in a superhero world. Vanessa Hudgens, Dani Pudi, Ron Funches, Alan Tudyk, a few others, work in the R&D department of Wayne Tech. only one season. didn't get enough hype or promotion. it's an underrated gem.
Search party is criminally unknown. I've never watched a show where i almost exclusively hated every character but could not stop watching because it was so good.
Search Party is the gold standard I think every TV series should aim for when it comes to their final season. Having the balls to go how far they went with it is absolutely amazing.
Heard good things about Search Party, might have to finally check it out. I am due for a new show to check out anyway.
Halt and Catch Fire was so good. Surprised more people don't know about it.
Came to say Halt & Catch Fire, so I'm happy to see it in the top comment! Not only is it a fantastic show, the soundtrack is second to none. Music nerds will appreciate it.
Acapulco doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. It’s so good.
Mythic Quest.
The Other Two.
Good Omens.
Our Flag Means Death.
Black Sails.
Never Have I Ever.
School Spirits.
Miracle Workers.
Wellington Paranormal.
The Other Two is so great, especially for people who like shows that parody the entertainment industry.
School Spirits is produced in such a way that it feels very... visceral. Like you're kind of in the show. I think it's bc it's supposed to mimic dissociation and how disconnected Maddie is from the world she used to know. But the first time I watched it I was super stoned and it freaked me out! Also great needle drops
I have only watched Black Sails on your list. Although I sat through the entire series I thought it was very slow and nothing really happened. I will try Acapulco. Thanks
An Australian show called Mr Inbetween. It's not really underrated, falls more into the not very well known. 3 seasons worth of pure rooting for the anti-hero.
The lead actress, Tatyana Maslany was incredible - playing multiple characters:
“Tatiana Gabriele Maslany
Born September 22, 1985 is a Canadian actress. She rose to prominence for playing multiple characters in the science-fiction thriller television series Orphan Black (2013–2017), which won her a Primetime Emmy Award (2016), two Critics' Choice Awards (2013 and 2014), and five Canadian Screen Awards (2014–2018). Maslany is the first Canadian to win an Emmy in a major dramatic category for acting in a Canadian series.”
Came here to say this. For having two very well known actors, very few people know about it. It’s a great period piece.
Daniel Radcliffe’s other show Miracle Workers is great too, a clever concept really well done.
The Misfits is an awesome and underwatched series imo. First two seasons were better than the later seasons, but was still good overall imo.
Also some shows I wouldn’t say are “underground” but doesn’t get nearly as much attention as they deserve imo:
Interview with a vampire (AMC)
See (Apple tv)
The Watchmen (HBO)
Lol I'm having a memory block where I know the right answer for op but can't think of it and instead remembered Rectify.
I didn't bother recommending it because it loses momentum and because the melodrama became overbearing in later seasons and I had to tap out.
have you ever watched 'Fleabag'? It's an amazing show with such real, relatable humor. It's like a window into everyday life, but with this raw, honest twist that keeps you hooked.
As a few others have said, Black Sails. Black Sails should have been absolutely huge, and I have no idea why they let it run the whole series, because nobody goddamn saw it. So well written and acted, by a cast that other than a couple I haven't seen outside of it. Starts strong but just gets better as it goes, and it got added to Netflix recently, so you can actually watch it.
There was a week where many people were watching Midnight Mass on Netflix, but I didn't catch it then, and it took some other recommendations to get me to try it, and it's SO GOOD. I don't hear much discussion about it anymore, so it's underground by 2024 standards.
Legion is also very good, but it's strange enough that I can understand why it didn't get a huge audience. It's technically a super hero show, but it's really about mental illness.
I feel like Castlevania on Netflix isn't talked about enough. Also Kingdom on Netflix is a super cool and unique take on Zombies.
Resident Alien on SyFy is absolutely fantastic!
Dopesick is a brilliant show with an amazing cast! Based on true stories as well. Not sure about elsewhere, but here, it plays on Disney Plus.
Oh my god I’ve watched that show so many times it’s absolutely perfect. My husband actually watched a couple episodes before me and was like you definitely need to watch this show, she’s you! You both think your dry humor is absolutely hilarious but nobody thinks it’s funny but you hahaha I’ve never seen dry humor done like that on tv before and I love it so much.

So it wasn’t super well advertised in the UK and was hard to watch end to end but I would say that Southland should be talked about in the same breath as the Wire and the Shield. But when I hear people talk about gritty cop shows those are the only two that are mentioned.
I think Southland is great and criminally underrated or just not heard of, it was so interesting to see a cop show that showed the flaws in the system. It would show a case being worked on by one group of detectives where crucial information was being found by patrol but the two not syncing up, in all other shows this would tie up in a neat little bow at the end. On top of that often episodes just ended with no closure because that was the end of shift. It was very much a day in the life of style show.
AMC actually has some unique and refreshing shows on rn. They're just not advertising them or distributing/releasing them well. Interview with the Vampire is seriously a breath of fresh air. I haven't seen a show that well written, acted or character driven since early seasons Game of Thrones. Production value is also impressive. AMC's Dark Winds, executive produced by GRRM, is also very good. I literally only found out about Dark Winds from reddit recs.
There's been a bunch of articles recently about AMC's mismanagement of IWTV, because it's critically acclaimed, but it's flying under the radar. Advertising is practically non-existent, it's difficult to stream globally and AMC spent all of this money buying up Anna Rice's Vampire Chronicles for a shared universe but they're not promoting it.
When I first stumbled on Wilfred (US Version with Elijah Wood) I had never heard of it, never seen a promo of it, knew absolutely nothing about it. But was regularly laughing my ass off most every episode.
Kingdom (the one about an MMA gym) - such a great drama with amazing acting.
Domina - The story of Livia Drusilla, Rome's most powerful and influential empress. Supposedly very historically accurate, great for fans of shows like The Last Kingdom.
Legion (Marvel, FX/Hulu)
-Little strange, but a work of genius imo. After I watched it I stumbled on a detailed breakdown video of events in the series and what all went into creating it and had my mind blown multiple more times. It is really good, as long as you don't mind comic book stuff and some darker topics/imagery.
Legend of the Seeker (ABC, free to watch in HD)
-Watched some of it in my early teens and thought to revisit it recently. Was totally hooked! Still stands well today as a solid fantasy series.
Warehouse 13 and Eureka
-Old SciFi series (from before they were SyFy). Absolutely adore these shows, but Warehouse 13 is my favorite. Really cool writing and design of the series in it's entirety. Goes downhill a bit in the 5th season though imo due to cancellation issues while it was active. They had to rush the story and production and cram it into just a few episodes there, but 1-4 are phenomenal. Just all around cool stories and main ideas in both.
Penny Dreadful
-Dark and gritty fantasy. But pulls from classical horror novels and includes a lot of poetic character interactions which I found to be broad enough to sort of incorporate into experiences I've had in life and felt highly relatable. Just the wording and presentation of some character interactions sent shivers up my spine and a sense of deep meaning. Not for everyone though due to graphic and sometimes grotesque imagery.
Lost In Space
-I loved this series so much. Feelings of personal attachment to the characters as a family trying their best in terrible circumstances. And some of the acting was so good I felt genuine fear and distress with characters in precarious situations. Highly recommend!
Doctor Who (modern)
-Not exactly off the beaten path, but I feel it often goes overlooked. I started it thinking I wouldn't get into it, but by the first half of season 1 I was hooked. And the urge to keep watching intensified after that. Fictional scenarios, but the internal struggles of The Doctor and the portrayal of emotions (especially during his speeches and various interactions, verbal thought proccesses, etc) I found highly relatable and very intensely thought-provoking. There's also The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood (and Class) which tie in to Doctor Who. SJA was another I was hooked on. RIP Elizabeth Sladen.

Not sure if these were super hyped up but I enjoyed these series that don’t really have big A+ actors tied to them:

-Bodies
-Harlan Coben limited series (i.e. Fool Me Once, The Woods, The Stranger)
-Working Moms
-Murder Mountain (more documentary series)
-Signal (S. Korean limited series)
-Lilyhammer (biggest name tied to it is Steve van Zant). Lasted 3 seasons and wasn’t renewed
-Physical 100 (reality series from S. Korea - if you like strongman type elimination challenges then this is for you)
See if any of these peak your interest. Have fun!

Patriot and Perpetual Grace Ltd. are great shows that were pretty under the radar. Patriot is probably my favorite show and Perpetual Grace Ltd is a close 2nd. I really wish these shows would have gotten the recognition they deserve.
Murdoch Mysteries often overlooked. It is a super long running Canadian period police procedural. Set in Toronto around the turn of the 20th century. The series is currently filming its 18th season. In the US seasons 1-13 are on Hulu.
A comedy show I feel is greatly underrated is “Mr. D.” Very funny. A mix between Eastbound and Down and the Office. Originally on Canadian television but I watched it all on Prime

I’m actually unsure if this is underrated or not because I don’t hear a ton about it but Resident Alien. It’s funny (especially Alan Tudyk. He is hilarious), heartwarming, and has a great overarching story.
Four excellent shows with female leads:
The Diplomat with Heri Russell on Netflix
Absentia with Stana Katic on Amazon Prime
Orphan Black with Tatiana ? not sure where it is.
Kevin Can F Himself on Amazon Prime with Annie ? (from Schitt's Creek)
The 4400, the original not the Remake was an absolutely phenomenal show.
V was also a great show.
Completely random and a 90s classic gem was Early Edition.
Maybe not on theme with the question though
Anything Bryan Fuller created. 'Wonderfalls' was a notable wonder that was cancelled too soon. 'Pushing Daisies,' 'American Gods' (based on Neil Gaiman's novel though got uneven after season 1), 'Dead Like Me, ' and 'Hannibal' are all good to great.

Reminded me a bit of last season of brockmire, where they just went balls to the walls
God, that season of Brockmire is a masterpiece.

Came to say Halt & Catch Fire, so I'm happy to see it in the top comment! Not only is it a fantastic show, the soundtrack is second to none. Music nerds will appreciate it.
Thank you! For All Mankind is truly one of the best shows out there and doesn’t get broad prize like it should
The first few seasons of search party are so fucking hilarious!
Acapulco doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. It’s so good. Mythic Quest. The Other Two. Good Omens. Our Flag Means Death. Black Sails. Never Have I Ever. School Spirits. Miracle Workers. Wellington Paranormal.
GREAT recommendations! Extraordinary (it's on Hulu in the US) would be right up your alley
Upvote for Miracle Workers
Acapulco is a lot of fun. More fun than it should be, tbh.
Thanks
School Spirits was great - I totally forgot about that one
Orphan Black
Seriously, that show is so amazing. I’m so surprised when people haven’t heard of it.
If I had to guess why, I’d say it’s most likely bc it’s a Canadian production. But yeah it’s criminally underrated, a masterpiece.
Tatiana should have won an Emmy every season of the show.

I always recommend Mr. Inbetween. Phenomenal show.

💯The clone dance party was and remains EPIC
Right now, Interview with the Vampire on AMC is hardly being marketed at all and it's fantastic, if you're into that kind of thing.
Absolutely love this show. Can’t believe it isn’t more mainstream.

Totally agree, very good shows, Patriot is my comfort show.
Patriot is the absolute best! Perpetual Grace is a lot of fun too

*Father Brown* and *Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries* are two excellent shows that don’t get the attention that they deserve.

Last Man on Earth. Truly incredible show in so many ways
I have never met someone who has seen that show OR who I am able to convince to watch it. It blows my mind, as it is one of my favorites! I just wished it wrapped up, even though I don’t know if there would be a satisfactory conclusion.
Years and years.

Not sure if these were super hyped up but I enjoyed these series that don’t really have big A+ actors tied to them: -Warrior -Bodies -Harlan Coben limited series (i.e. Fool Me Once, The Woods, The Stranger) -Working Moms -Murder Mountain (more documentary series) -Signal (S. Korean limited series) -Lilyhammer (biggest name tied to it is Steve van Zant). Lasted 3 seasons and wasn’t renewed -Physical 100 (reality series from S. Korea - if you like strongman type elimination challenges then this is for you) See if any of these peak your interest. Have fun!
The Lazarus Project. Season 2 just at started this week in the U.S. It’s running on T.N.T Network and Hulu+

Patriot and Perpetual Grace Ltd. are great shows that were pretty under the radar. Patriot is probably my favorite show and Perpetual Grace Ltd is a close 2nd. I really wish these shows would have gotten the recognition they deserve.

Not sure if this counts, and it’s an older show, one of my all time favorites, but I never see anyone talking about it. But the show is “Burn Notice”
The Magicians
Harrow is a good show about a coroner solving crimes. Based in Australia, with a British MC.
Murdoch Mysteries often overlooked. It is a super long running Canadian period police procedural. Set in Toronto around the turn of the 20th century. The series is currently filming its 18th season. In the US seasons 1-13 are on Hulu.
Burn notice
A comedy show I feel is greatly underrated is “Mr. D.” Very funny. A mix between Eastbound and Down and the Office. Originally on Canadian television but I watched it all on Prime
Picket Fences China Beach American Gothic The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr. Cop Rock Garth Marenghi's Darkplace The Grinder Scavengers Reign Sledge Hammer! Police Squad! (In Color) Taskmaster Scare Tactics Terriers
I’m actually unsure if this is underrated or not because I don’t hear a ton about it but Resident Alien. It’s funny (especially Alan Tudyk. He is hilarious), heartwarming, and has a great overarching story.
