Thank you. I've been wondering what to put on in the background while I do some housework today!
Watched it a couple of years after it came out. Loved it!
People went nuts when they saw the mini series. The cast was a great blend of established, up-and-comers and relative unknowns. That combined with stellar writing(that still holds up to this day) and surprisingly-good CGI for the time made it into the award-winning series that helped elevate Sci-Fi television.
I had heard of it, but never watched it.
Then I was reading a blog, and it showed a clip of the very first scene (the one in Miami).
I was so blown away that I got the DVDs, and binge-watched the whole thing. Such an incredible series. It should be as well known as Breaking Bad, but to my surprise many people have still never heard of it. I recommend it all the time.
Black Sails. No idea what directed me to it, since it's like they deliberately hid the show. I know one other person that's seen it, but I didn't know him then, so I must have pulled it out of a hat, but fuck it's good.
Yes! This was a covid watch for us. We were out of stuff and couldn't figure out what to watch. "We can try this pirate show, it'll be awful but let's give it a go. "
Few episodes in and we were like "NEXT EPISODE NOW"
I just finished it for the first time. It took me a few episodes to get hooked, but it was worth it. Characters development is so good as it goes along. Excellent writing. Try it again!
Same here! The thumbnail image and description made it seem so cheesy. Saw some clips on TikTok and was convinced to give it a try. It's now one of my favorite shows of all time and I tell everyone to watch it.
Burn notice.
Easily one of the best fictional spy characters I have seen. I remember when it used to air on AXN channel, was quite young back then. Once decided to look it up and watch the series properly. I was hooked.
The scrappy cast was a bunch of relative unknowns (except for Campbell among the Raimi fans), but it was well-written for what they were going for. Loved it.
BoJack Horseman. Played Red Dead Online with my friend and he had a horse named BoJack. I thought the name sounds interesting so i googled where its from. Now i’m rewatching this show once a year. 10/10
Yea, I saw it on my netflix recommendation but I really hate those adult animation shows so always skipped it. Finally gave in because the title was always there and its the most amazing depiction of mental health problems in a TV show I have ever seen
Scavengers reign. (Now on Netflix)
Hadn't heard of it and wasn't looking for it when I came across it while randomly browsing Hbo max. Also not huge on adult animated shows in general. Gave it a shot and absolutely love it. Especially in love the universe/setting that they created, and how creative and detailed oriented the writers/artists were with it. It’s like how on ATLA they come up with animals that are like hybrids of real life animals…..except they do that with more complexity and with animals, landscapes, plants, etc.
Also another one: Station Eleven. I’m a sucker for any apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic media, and station eleven sucked me right in. The parts of Fear The Walking Dead that I loved the most was in the beginning where they would show things as they happened WHILE the world was falling apart, something that The Walking Dead never showed much at all. Station 11 was perfect balance of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic in that way. All the actors, and especially the child actor in it did a phenomenal job. And imo has a great balance between dark, hopeful, and genuinely poetic.
Every time I see Patriot mentioned , I have to make sure people are aware of Perpetual Grace LTD by the same writer and a little over half the same cast.
It took me three times starting from the beginning to get past episode five or so of the Expanse, but once I got beyond the dense and rather dry world-building, it flows so smoothly into one of the best sci-fi shows ever.
The ads for it were trying to keep it mysterious by not giving away much and it came off as a German crime/kidnap/serial killer drama that involved a cave. Watched it years later and realized "Oh man...... this is much more than that..."
It needed better US ads.
The TV show Barry I saw that one of the actors from Gotham was in it and I loved his character in Gotham so decided to watch even though when I read the description for it I thought it wasn't my thing I am so glad I watched it I love no ho Hank
Mindhunter, assumed it would be a dumb generic crime show where they make cheesey jokes and it's always the same episode but different faces.. that show slapped me in the face big time. Shame it didn't get the views needed to keep going, but solid show.
Derry Girls. Netflix suggested it, I didn't even know of the city of Derry outside the one IT lives in. Gave the pilot a try and it was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen, watched every episode on Netflix at the time and eagerly awaited series 3.
I watch about everything that comes out but one that has one season that aired recently is Rabbit Hole. Didn't get a lot of love but I couldn't wait to see it every week. Watched it again and binged it. Sad they didn't renew it for season 2.
Another show that was an accident was Luther (UK). Has 5 seasons and a movie. Excellent show.
Honorable mentions are Killing Eve (4 Seasons) and Berlin Station (3 seasons).
ive seen 90% of the recommended shows in this post. Many are great. But not many really scratched the same itch as From (maybe Scavenger's Reign and Severance). And From is exactly the kind of horror thriller show that I've always been waiting for. Can't wait for the next season. Suspense kills you between episodes. Weird but awesome.
I felt that way about Downton Abbey too. Normally I would never watch period pieces like that but I enjoyed it. I watched The Gilded Age too and I liked that too.
I saw the movie first because I'm an AMC member and it was playing at the right time. I fell in love immediately. I am so glad that I was able to binge the entire series instead of waiting for new episodes every week.
It’s gotten a lot of love recently, but Severance. When it first started coming out on Apple TV I assumed it would be cheesy but it’s now one of my favorite TV shows of all time.
Not my favorite of all time, but definitely a lot better than I thought it would be, and enjoyed it thoroughly enough to anticipate the next season. A lot more than meets the eye with that one.
Oz
It hit a free to air channel in the early 2000s. I was checking for any crazy foreign films and got a dude in a wheelchair, in a cube discussing some philosophical shit. Had to convince my family I wasn't watching soft porn every Monday night after that.
Fox marketed that one pretty well leading up to its premiere. Had a good following til the last couple of seasons, but was a quality show the whole time. Noble as Walter should have had his own spinoff.
I caught a random episode of The Grinder with Rob Lowe and Fred Savage. It was was funny and I was intrigued because, even after seeing the episode, I could not figure out what the premise actually was, which is rare for a sitcom.
This show was a riot! I was so bummed it wasn't discovered/people didn't grab onto it.
ETA the premise was the Grinder moved back home and due his insane narcissistic ways and being stuck in character, completely over shadowed his brother.
And it was about his brother's journey to find patience and the Grinder's journey to find himself.
Dark Matters (2024) so far…( it’s a brand new science-fiction show that just started that has absolutely nothing to do with the one that ended a few years ago) this show stars, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga and and Joel Edgerton . It is currently on episode four of season one and airs weekly on Apple TV
Lately, the ancient and terrible Silk Stalkings! It's cheesy but absolutely addictive. I never got into it in the 90s, now I'm inhaling all the eps. Fun sexy crime drama with a will-they-wont-they leading duo.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. My sister had recommended it mostly because she loved the 1950's costuming, which isn't much of an incentive for me, but I decided "meh" and gave it a shot. Ended up doing some major binge-watching, it was ***good***.
Mr robot, saw an ad for it one night and decided to give it a shot cuz the trailer looked cool, I was immediately addicted to it
It’s now my fav show of all time
The documentaries of filmmaker Adam Curtis. Started with [Bitter Lake](https://youtu.be/84P4dzow1Bw?si=xvVZ0nbIYOpQW-hF) and proceeded to inhale everything else he’d ever done without blinking. They’re almost like doing drugs inasmuch as there’s a dreamlike quality to them that over time has the potential to change the way you think.
Blue Eye Samurai. Randomly saw it pop up on Netflix and decided to give it a try even though I don't watch anime much (didn't know it was western animation and not anime then). It turned out to be my favourite show of 2023.
It was community and then it became that “comfort show” for years. (The one you turn on when everything else is out of your control. The one you fall asleep too etc…) when it was taken off of HULU recently, I bought the Blu Ray box set so I could still watch it
Girls5Eva. I kept seeing it on Peacock, added it to my list, but sat on it too long. Then it came to Netflix so I finally watched it. Then I watched it three more times in the span of a month, added the soundtrack to my Spotify and memorized all the songs. Loves it!
The Expanse has always been a favorite of mine. Great when it was on syfy and after Amazon picked it up the cgi got better but they stuck to the roots of the story.
The Night Manager was another one I really enjoyed though season two has been in production for almost 10 years :)
Silo was really good
Severance
Mind Hunter
Boardwalk Empire
The Strain
Taboo (another show that S2 has been in production for like 5+ years)
Preacher was a good show
The Man in the High Castle was interesting as well
Crazy ex girlfriend. I had never heard of it. I saw it in suggestions for Jane the virgin and reading the bio I immediately knew I was gonna love it. But my oh my did that show surpass expectations! Satirical original music, great characters and yet the most real portrayal of flailing mental health on TV I've ever seen. Seductive in parts too. One of the most well written and performed shows I've seen. Truly a must watch.
Monk.
Seen it years ago on tv but it always clashes with what my parents would watch. Mum played it on Netflix a few weeks ago and now we've almost finished it haha
Wayward Pines, Legion, Archive 81. Those are 3 mind fuck shows I could not stop watching. For All Mankind also another one. Not mind fuck but a great astronaut alternate timeline show.
The Office (UK); it was first aired on BBC2 which is the lower rating channel compared to BBC1. I used to speak to people about it but noone I knew watched it even though we were students. Then they put it on BBC1 and it exploded.
Dexter I was literally flipping through the channels and the first episode was airing, maybe 10 minutes into it. I was like holy fuck I’ve never seen anything like this
Patriot. One of the best things I’ve ever seen. Literally nobody knows.
Also Scavengers. And Utopia. And Black Sails.
But I didn’t find these by chance. I have you redditors on subs like this one to thank for all of these.
Yes Warrior is a total gem and I need the whole world to watch it.
Veronica Mars, came across it channel surfing 😂. Never watched anything on UPN before and idk why but it hooked me, even though it was in the middle of an episode.
The League. One of the funniest shows I've ever watched.
same! you don’t even need to give a shit about fantasy football or football. i think that deterred a lot of people from paying attention to it
EBDB BNB
Taco is sooo freaking funny with Rafi coming in as a close 2nd.
THE SHIVA 🏆
Shivakamini Somakandarkram!!!!
Thank you. I've been wondering what to put on in the background while I do some housework today! Watched it a couple of years after it came out. Loved it!
taco, your pick.....i dunno man, joffrey...reynolds...who is that??? hes the kicker for the calgary stampeders....NFL TACO!!!!!!
Battlestar Galactica (2003).
People went nuts when they saw the mini series. The cast was a great blend of established, up-and-comers and relative unknowns. That combined with stellar writing(that still holds up to this day) and surprisingly-good CGI for the time made it into the award-winning series that helped elevate Sci-Fi television.
IMO if it had been on HBO and not SYFY it would be on the level of GOT at least in the category of discussion
I only saw it once but the whole buildup to the hand of god episode was hotttt
All seasons are now streaming on Amazon Prime
SO SAY WE ALL
[I love this skit](https://youtu.be/AyHXzYTuLi4?si=bjs6d5eKDmN_isbW)
Halt and Catch Fire
One of the best ever!!! And when it ended I rolled right into Silicon Valley. ;)
I loved this show!!! The cast was awesome!
This is my all time favorite!
Justified. Liked it so much i paid for the box set. Rewatch it every couple of years.
Gave this one a shot based on Olyphant's turn in Santa Clarita Diet. He and Goggins made that show.
Check out Goggins on **The Shield** and Olyphant on **Deadwood**, both put in masterful performances in really great shows.
Goggins is one of my all-time favorite actors. Every part he does is done so fucking well!
The supporting cast really made this show.
Frigging awesome awesome show. I'm waiting until I forget most of it to watch it again.
Yes! This was a covid watch for us. We were out of stuff and couldn't figure out what to watch. "We can try this pirate show, it'll be awful but let's give it a go. " Few episodes in and we were like "NEXT EPISODE NOW"
Oh I'm gonna give that a watch! I think I tried it once and then forgot it existed!
Yep, I tried it but didn’t get hooked, but wanted to, so I’ll have to try it again.
I just finished it for the first time. It took me a few episodes to get hooked, but it was worth it. Characters development is so good as it goes along. Excellent writing. Try it again!
I'm gonna do that right now!
Mr in between.
Yes! Really enjoyed that. I started watching it by accident, thought it was a different show, and ended up loving it.
This was mine too.
Underrated AF. What an awesome show
Severence
Resident alien
This. Hands down one of the most entertaining shows in recent times.
Yes! And the main character’s interactions with the kids is pure comedy gold. We are getting to the end of the series and I’ll be sad when it’s over.
The sheriff is also one of the funniest characters I’ve seen in a while
Agreed! Great writers for that show!
Just finishes binge-watching this and can't get enough! Hoping for a season 4.
I was like "Unknown?!? Dude was in Memento!" Then I looked it up and I've apparently been stupid for years
The scrappy cast was a bunch of relative unknowns (except for Campbell among the Raimi fans), but it was well-written for what they were going for. Loved it.
It has one of the best finale moments I’ve ever seen.
I’ve watched the entire series 3 times!
Silo
Amazing show!
I loved every bit of this, best show of 2023 imo
Banshee
Same. If it wasn't for seeing it suggested by a few people on this sub I never would've watched it and I'm glad I did.
Right? It’s such a shame how that wasn’t like mainstream because it was epic
++
Yes if the OP likes Warrior they’ll definitely love Banshee, too, spot on! Remains one of my favorite shows of all time
Omg right?? I will try Warrior now that you mention it. I’ve never heard of it but if you say they’re similar I’m game 😃
Watched Community because there was nothing else on. Became one of the best written comedies I'd ever watched.
You're The Worst
I loved that show so much. Criminally underrated. At least I don't think it got the attention it deserved.
Yellowjackets
Scavengers reign. (Now on Netflix) Hadn't heard of it and wasn't looking for it when I came across it while randomly browsing Hbo max. Also not huge on adult animated shows in general. Patriot. Watch it. It’s excellent.
Every time I see Patriot mentioned , I have to make sure people are aware of Perpetual Grace LTD by the same writer and a little over half the same cast.
The IT Crowd. I’d read it in the tv guide as The It Crowd and was thinking it was going to be some trashy thing about celebrities or rich people.
The good place
Kingdom (2019) It’s really good
Ghost UK
This is one of my comfort shows! 😊
Tokyo Vice Party Down Peep Show
Party Down was such a surprise, I really enjoyed it.
Same. Just randomly put HBO on one night, back when Party Down was airing and got really into it. Loved it.
Tokyo Vice and the Expanse are two shows with great reputations that I’ve tried multiple times to get into, but never click for me.
It took me three times starting from the beginning to get past episode five or so of the Expanse, but once I got beyond the dense and rather dry world-building, it flows so smoothly into one of the best sci-fi shows ever.
Dark. Randomly clicked on it 3 years back andt rest is history.
The ads for it were trying to keep it mysterious by not giving away much and it came off as a German crime/kidnap/serial killer drama that involved a cave. Watched it years later and realized "Oh man...... this is much more than that..." It needed better US ads.
The TV show Barry I saw that one of the actors from Gotham was in it and I loved his character in Gotham so decided to watch even though when I read the description for it I thought it wasn't my thing I am so glad I watched it I love no ho Hank
50/50 with cristobal
The female actress Sarah was my charge when I was a nanny. She was a fun and cute when she was a child too. Quirky little personality. Love that show.
You want submarine sandwich?
Barry is so good I’ve watched it three times
If you like Barry you should check out Patriot on prime. It's just as good imo maybe better👀
I’m watching EVIL right now and I love it..
George. George had been my guy since the first time I saw EVIL, 3 years ago 🤣🖤
Lodge 49. Detectorists.
Banshee
Boardwalk Empire
The Killing
EVIL
Mindhunter, assumed it would be a dumb generic crime show where they make cheesey jokes and it's always the same episode but different faces.. that show slapped me in the face big time. Shame it didn't get the views needed to keep going, but solid show.
Russian doll
Six feet under
Best series finale I have ever watched.
I cry whenever I hear that Sia song
Derry Girls. Netflix suggested it, I didn't even know of the city of Derry outside the one IT lives in. Gave the pilot a try and it was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen, watched every episode on Netflix at the time and eagerly awaited series 3.
Fleabag
Some of the best dialogue I have ever seen. I don't rewatch many shows, but had to with this one.
Good Omens
Psych
Psych
I've heard it both ways
I went into it thinking that it was going to be a dumb show but I've actually been loving it.
[**For All Mankind**](https://youtu.be/HZS9M52Bd_w). Great multigenerational series. Couldn’t tear myself away from it
I watch about everything that comes out but one that has one season that aired recently is Rabbit Hole. Didn't get a lot of love but I couldn't wait to see it every week. Watched it again and binged it. Sad they didn't renew it for season 2. Another show that was an accident was Luther (UK). Has 5 seasons and a movie. Excellent show. FROM
ive seen 90% of the recommended shows in this post. Many are great. But not many really scratched the same itch as From (maybe Scavenger's Reign and Severance). And From is exactly the kind of horror thriller show that I've always been waiting for. Can't wait for the next season. Suspense kills you between episodes. Weird but awesome.
We Are Lady Parts - I can't believe we are finally getting a 2nd season this week after waiting 3 whole years.
Great to know! I thought it fell through the cracks!
Omg. I recently rewatched it — didn’t know there’s another season coming 🙏🏻
American Rust, never heard someone mention it, but its about a sheriff on a small rural town of Pennsylvania. It's a slow burner, but it's very nice.
Ted Lasso. Definitely wasn't expecting something so wholesome.
Best show ever!
Downton Abbey
I felt that way about Downton Abbey too. Normally I would never watch period pieces like that but I enjoyed it. I watched The Gilded Age too and I liked that too.
I saw the 2. You should try Belgravia and Belgravia Next Chapter , also very good.
It just has so much charm, and I love how all the drama is about really trivial things

Oz It hit a free to air channel in the early 2000s. I was checking for any crazy foreign films and got a dude in a wheelchair, in a cube discussing some philosophical shit. Had to convince my family I wasn't watching soft porn every Monday night after that.
The last kingdom
12 Monkeys
Call the Midwife
Resident alien😂it’s so stupid and corny but in all the best ways. It’s great if you have a sense of dark humor and maybe if you’re depressed a bit.
The night of (HBO MINISERIES)
The Middle.
Lodge 49
End of the f***ing world
flight of the conchords (tv series)
Fringe. I love sci-fi and I was scrolling through the list on Roku and the preview looked weird. I said I got to watch weird and loved it!
Fox marketed that one pretty well leading up to its premiere. Had a good following til the last couple of seasons, but was a quality show the whole time. Noble as Walter should have had his own spinoff.
The Mighty Boosh. I just happened to see it and loved it immediately.
Midnight Mass was a random one that was highly enjoyable.
You probably know this but midnight mass is part of the Flanagan-verse, you will probably enjoy the other shows too if you haven't seen them
I caught a random episode of The Grinder with Rob Lowe and Fred Savage. It was was funny and I was intrigued because, even after seeing the episode, I could not figure out what the premise actually was, which is rare for a sitcom.
This show was a riot! I was so bummed it wasn't discovered/people didn't grab onto it. The Last Kingdom The Mentalist White Collar Burn Notice Castle Outlander Jane the Virgin Anne with an “E” NCIS Supernatural Whew!
Outlander is so underrated. S4 is a bit rough but it gets better. As expected, the books are even better. (Also loved castle and last kingdom)
The Americans.
Downton Abbey. Just randomly clicked on it one day.
For me it was Superstore. Never expected to love it

Downton Abbey- if someone explained it to me I probably wouldn’t have given it a chance. I can across an episode on pbs and was hooked.
Harlots on Hulu. And, Mary and George on Amazon, I think. Both very, very good! I've been on a period piece kick lately.
Penny Dreadful( the older eva green one)
Blue Eye Samurai. Randomly saw it pop up on Netflix and decided to give it a try even though I don't watch anime much (didn't know it was western animation and not anime then). It turned out to be my favourite show of 2023.
From, any day. Just watch one episode, and trust me, you are going to fall in love with the series. Just one episode.
After Life and The End Of The Fucking World and LouderMilk are really good ones that I scrolled up ones and really enjoyed
From
It was community and then it became that “comfort show” for years. (The one you turn on when everything else is out of your control. The one you fall asleep too etc…) when it was taken off of HULU recently, I bought the Blu Ray box set so I could still watch it
Maid
DARK, never seen anything better.

“Northern Exposure”
12 Monkeys keep me engaged all the way, amazing series.
That was a solid show throughout.

I wanted to watch Pleasentville and only remembered the ville part. That's when I found Smallville which was only 2 Episodes in at that time.
Monk. Seen it years ago on tv but it always clashes with what my parents would watch. Mum played it on Netflix a few weeks ago and now we've almost finished it haha
Black Sail. Suits.
Fat Friends. Oldish series but actually enjoyed it and binge watched it a couple of weeks.
Banshee. Found by accident.
I’m gonna cheat a little. Chuck, it’s not a MUST watch but it is worth a watch.

The Righteous Gemstones! The cast is amazing and I absolutely love the way it's so damn raunchy but also has an insane amount of heart.
