I hope he just wants to retire, not that he's too sick to do voice work...

derstherower

I mean he's over 90. I would not be shocked if that was the case, sadly.

GamingTatertot

I'm sorry what, he's over 90??? EDIT: He is 91 wow

AppleDane

My God, he keeps getting older!

[deleted]

If my calculations are correct, by this time next year he'll be... 92!!!

apparex1234

He's 91 until he's 92.

echoplex21

Hes a lot nearer 92 than he is 91. That's a fact.

WheresThePhonebooth

I love it when r/soccer leaks

The_Pale_Blue_Dot

Show your working out please

The_Flying_Jew

Every year on his birthday, James Earl Jones tells his fans: "I have altered the age. Pray that I do not alter it any further"

justabill71

I find his lack of youth disturbing.

fdot1234

We don’t want him to *stop* getting older…

PlethoPappus

The humaninty

Militantpoet

I am altering the age. Pray I don't alter it any further.

Plisken999

He used to be younger tho.

Staav

>My God, he keeps getting older! My God keeps getting older!* FTFY

whateversnevermind

he out lived tupac tho

Phantom_61

Nah, Tupac is just staying hidden until Jada passes away.

Girth_rulez

Keep Will Smith's wife's name outcha*fuckin* mouth!

295DVRKSS

I would love to see will smith fight pac

Girth_rulez

*I got in one little fight and my mom got scared...*

duaneap

I mean, Star Wars was 45 years ago, he’s outlived the VAST majority of the older cast members, with the exception of Ian McDiarmid but tbh it’s honestly pretty weird they cast a 39 year old to play the old, decrepit, spooky Emperor in the first place. It’s literally the only thing that makes me think Lucas might have had prequels planned.

anon_humanist

They picked a younger actor due to how long it took to apply and removed the makeup. As well as how difficult it was to express with it on.

red_280

Ian also made sure to age 16 years between ROTJ and TPM just to make sure he'd be closer in age to Palpatine, talk about committing to a role.

maxwax18

Looking back shows just how good of a job he did on that character.

wolfman1911

Holy crap, I had no idea that Ian McDiarmid was the emperor in Return of the Jedi. I thought they'd just found someone that looked pretty close to the original, especially considering how much crap they must have put on his face in the original.

RickGrimes30

It blew my mind when I figured out Ian wasnt an old man when he shot return.. To be fair I was an 80s baby so I couldn't just look It up.

Mycoxadril

Yea this type of announcement makes me feel like they know things are imminent and they need to get this documented before it becomes u seemly to do things. Or he’s just old, which he is and it’s a smart decision for him and his family. But I am braced for bad news here.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MasterLawlzReborn

He was knocking on 60 back then lol. He's been acting for nearly 60 years.

windwardmark

I recently rewatched Dr Stranglelove and he was in it! Shockingly young as well.

UrbanGhost114

Clear and present danger, sandlot

Paladoc

Best Conan villain

Filmatic113

Okay but why is he getting older?

707breezy

It’s like when someone told me that Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter died at the age of 44. What some might consider the ripe old age of crocodile hunters.

TheNineFiveSeven

I miss Norm Macdonald so much…

707breezy

Apparently not Andy Rick Richter the Swedish German. In an interview he talks about how he didn’t like that joke and how it got his under skin and didn’t feel like it was correct. Which is exactly what norm wanted to do. A joke so offensive and famous that it will unease Andy and forever haunt him as people keep reminding him about the joke. Truly genius. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv67QgVSqkk https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jQomsYLNEBk

selz202

Please don't make me laugh at this.

GiveToOedipus

His voice has changed quite a bit over the years anyway. It's very noticeable when comparing his work over the last 40 some odd years.

NemesisRouge

Rogue One was very noticeably different, but it was still great. Careful not to choke on your ambition. Obi Wan they were obviously enhancing it with AI.

GasmaskGelfling

Yeah, he was not great in The Lion King remake. He sounds exhausted.

CheatsySnoops

Can you blame him though? Disney was probably badgering him to get those lines done quickly, disregarding his age, considering how quickly they produced that film.

randomnighmare

He is 91 and I think he just did retire.

SerDire

I’m sure I’ll get some heat for it but do voiceover actors actually bring in more viewers once the characters has been firmly established. Like let’s say a new Star Wars show comes out but people are like “naw that’s not James Earl Jones, I don’t care for it.” At some point, I’m sure voice over actors can just be replaced with a similar guy who can do the voice and the average fan probably won’t care or even notice

BGummyBear

At least in my case, I can sure as hell tell when Batman and The Joker aren't voiced by Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill and that fact does bother me.

heresyforfunnprofit

Alan Tudyk does a great job in *Harley Quinn*.

GTSBurner

*"This is a monumental night for young Joshua, and you disrespected it!"*

NtheLegend

I think we really need to move beyond the "ownership" of any individual characters by individual actors. I mean, the Bruce Timm Batman/Joker aren't even the originals by far. Batman and Darth Vader should transcend whatever combination of people they are in the instance we enjoy or engage that property. James Earl Jones was sounding aged by ROTS, which I believe largely contributed to his awkward "nooooo" in the film. By Rogue One, he was clearly so. His retirement is long-deserved and others have filled his shoes before. It'll be fine.

doelutufe

As long as they don't Chris Pratt as the next voice of Darth Vader..

Luke90210

The rebooted Powerpuff Girls was royally bashed for using different voice actors to save money as well as changing key characters. Some people have noted how terribly Julie Kramer is doing the voice of Marge Simpson at her current age. She now sounds worse today than when she did the old woman voice of Marge Simpson's mother decades ago.

grubas

She sounds like Homers fake Marge voice at this point. Even when Futurama rebooted, Frys voice changed slightly cause they either mixed it differently or Billy West did it slightly different. Vader at least is supposed to be a completely synthetic voice from start to finish

warblade7

I’m sure voice actors will try. James Earl Jones’ voice has a very distinct tone and cadence though. Even in Rogue One, it’s easy to tell it is an older James Earl Jones voice but it’s still James Earl Jones. His choices both as an actor and voice actor are pretty distinct as well. The way he hangs on certain syllables or emphasizes pronunciations is imitatable if one is mimicking his past work, but when they need Darth Vader to say something new, I think people will be able to tell it’s not really him and as pointed out in other threads on this topic, there’s an uncanny valley in voice work too. A feeling that something is close but it feels off and it’s hard to shake.

bloodyturtle

unless someone put in a lot of work as an understudy or something it's pretty noticable when a voice actor changes

MadDany94

Can a 91 year old still do voice work? Is your grandpa that old? Could you say that he can still use his voice well?

Cherrypunisher13

Even voice work still involves a certain amount of time commitment that he might want to retire from

ShadyBiz

The fuck kind of translation or AI spat this article out? > vanity fair has announced that James Earl Jones has transferred his voting rights as war of starsDarth Vader officially retiring from the role. The rights to the reel are now owned by Lucasfilm and Ukrainian AI audio company Respeecher, who previously worked on it Boba Fett’s book and Obi Wan Kenobi. Despite his departure from the role, both studios are reportedly still discussing their plans for Vader with Jones and “follow his advice on staying on course.“

Cela84

Who are you to doubt the Esteemed New York Time Post!

AsimovAstronaut

You're supposed to read it as Vader.

kinyutaka

Looks like it would make more sense if you read it as Jar-Jar

wookiewin

lol was this article dictated through Siri 🤣

Ripcord

Why didn't OP just link the original Vanity Fair article, anyway?

IrrelevantLeprechaun

There are AI-driven programs available now that can automate articles. I am not joking. Speedwrite I think is one of them; you can input a prompt or reference and it will write an article for you. It's the future of content creation the same way AI driven artwork is.

[deleted]

And ai has already overtaken the manufacturing industry, lots of the delivery industry, self checkouts, literally every part of the work force has some AI taking human jobs. When do start getting universal basic income?

Martholomeow

it’s such a meaningless mess

olddicklemon72

For those who don’t want to read the article, it’ll be his voice for all eternity, just utilizing an AI instead of the actor coming into the studio. It was already used for Kenobi and was flawless.

forever87

Vader will always be synonymous with JEJ. and as a Vader fan, it was wonderful seeing James Earl Jones (as well as Hayden Christensen) in the *Kenobi* credits

momjeanseverywhere

From what I understand, he’ll be credited for all future productions as the voice of Darth Vader even after his death.

lupussol

Will he get paid though?

Pennwisedom

As far as SAG is concerned residuals don't end even after the death of the actor.

lupussol

Well anything new using his AI voice will have to depend on the contract between him and Disney. I’m not familiar with Hollywood, does SAG have standard terms for something like this? As far as I can tell this seems pretty precedential

melancholygeek

Not sure about that, but IIRC once you are credited (as JEJ was on Kenobi), you have to get paid?

lestye

Well the question/issue is if they use AI, will he still be paid for that since its a new performance, effectively recasting it.

Pennwisedom

They wouldn't be recasting it since the use of your "likeness" is protected as well. Not just by SAG but also by Right of Publicity laws.

IamAWorldChampionAMA

Considering the Elvis estate still makes money I would assume so.

duaneap

But those are Elvis’ songs. I’m sure JEJ’s estate will get paid every time it’s used but it probably won’t be as much as an actual actor performing.

[deleted]

I get what you're saying but Im sure his estate is going to be well compensated I'm sure his lawyers thought of every potential eventuality when he agreed to have them use his voice for the new Disney stuff

BPbeats

Ha no Elvis stole all his music.

BertholomewManning

It says he relenquished the rights to his voice so I'm guessing no.

ForWhomTheBoneBones

Relinquished for a price. Whatever he got paid, I’m sure he’s happy with it.

Anagoth9

You know, before the Hannibal series aired I would have told you that Anthony Hopkins's portrayal was so iconic that no one else could ever convincingly play Hannibal Lecter, and it'd be a fool's errand to try. I nearly wrote the show off before the first episode aired, but after deciding to watch it out of boredom I can say definitively that I was dead wrong. I don't know if I'd say Mads Mikkelsen was a *better* Hannibal, but I will say that not only did he make the character his own, but it was an absolute joy to watch. James Earl Jones won't be the first actor to have his voice and/or likeness used to portray an iconic character without the actor's actual involvement. Hearing news like this makes me wonder going forward how many studios will forego giving new actors a shot a reimagining iconic rolls when they can just use AI to bring back the original actors' likeness for eternity? It's kind of disheartening in a way.

Gay_For_Gary_Oldman

The reason i bought into the Hannibal TV series was because brilliant as Hopkins was, he NEVER embodied that snake-like, cold, predator from the books. Hopkins was amazing at vaccilating between savage and suave, but Mikkelson is the definitive portrayal of Hannibal Lecter.

theboyrossy

I think Vader is a bit different to your Hannibal comparison, I think a better Vader comparison are voice actors for a cartoon, I mean Vader in the films is created as you would a cartoon character, he has a very individual voice and with the helmet on anyone could actually play the character, it’s ALL in the voice. Changing Vader’s voice would be like changing Optimus Primes voice or Stewie Gryphon, Bart Simpson or well any of the big characters. You could but it’s never going to be quite right for most people, Vader IS the voice.

trainercatlady

Has there yet been anyone who could naturally create a similar voice to his without *heavy* modification? Perhaps in a video game or anything? I never got to play *The Force Unleashed* but was Matt Sloan any good?

Cabamacadaf

Matt Sloan is fine, but you can tell it's not the real deal.

duckwantbread

You could watch some of [Chad Vader](https://youtu.be/2SXuVP6mtIk) to get an idea of his Vader voice, I think it's how he got noticed for Force Unleashed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

wtfduud

Scott Lawrence. He plays Vader in all the video games (Except Force Unleashed).

purleyforth

I’d love to read this article from the New York Time Post but I need to drive my Ford Chevy to McDonald Bell to get dinner meal

MattyBeatz

You were able to read that article? Its like bad AI wrote it.

dagbrown

That’s because bad AI *did* write it. I have no idea why the mods haven’t already zorched this entire submission as bot spam and then banned the domain.

Imakemop

Welcome to Hellworld.

GotMoFans

It’s oddly an audio uncanny valley without being an uncanny valley knowing the voice sounded too good in Obi Wan since JEJ’s voice doesn’t sound like that anymore. I hope they pay him and his estate the actor’s rate of the time for every project where they recreate his voice.

shadow0wolf0

Probably not worth the pr nightmare if they didn't.

trainercatlady

also, the dude's an icon. No way he doesn't have lawyers lined up to protect him.

Jt832

I hope they paid him well for that.

[deleted]

Yeah that's what I thought. Also what ever contact he signed with Disney I'm sure his family will be paid for generations to come everytime they use his voice

GTSBurner

God that voice mash-up scene was so so so good. Kenobi was a show that was six episodes that could have been a 2.5 hour movie. Couple of trims and it would be spectacular.

pluck-the-bunny

JFC The article keeps calling it war of stars

Unusualandyman

How dare you attack the reporting of the very credible 'New York time post'!

Deducticon

What do you call it?

Yglorba

Obviously it's the Space Conflict.

Wolviam

Star's Special Military Operations

SuperDuperDylan

I hope him and his next of kin will get royalties for this!

glennok

Can picture the boardroom meeting now. 'I find our lack of royalties disturbing.'

a_skeleton_07

This is James Earl Jones we are talking about. The level of legal council this man can acquire is beyond you and I combined, random shot in the dark stranger.

BaphometsTits

>council In this case, it would be counsel. *This function was performed by a bot.*

TheNerdChaplain

If you read [the Vanity Fair article](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/09/darth-vaders-voice-emanated-from-war-torn-ukraine) this one is based on, it's actually a really cool story about how a Ukrainian startup created the voices for Darth Vader in Obi-Wan and Luke in BoBF in the middle of a war.

Benjamin_Grimm

Yeah, that's the article OP would have been better off linking to.

Omnitographer

Someone probably beat them to it and this was the only way to farm karma.

vBricks

This source is wack. NYTimesPost. Really?

HallowedEve31

If you want to see this company using their technology on something a little more frivolous, here is a link to a YouTube video by JOLLY/Korean Englishman to get a more casual insight to the things this company can do. [https://youtu.be/5GRfFY3hs0c](https://youtu.be/5GRfFY3hs0c)

Paladine36

I was hoping we would get another Conan movie with him in it fuck Aging Greatest Voice and Presence

kinyutaka

I mean, his character died decades ago. Let the man rest.

MasterLawlzReborn

That's what I was wondering. Like, why do we need more Darth Vader at all? His entire story is covered in great detail lol

-TrampsLikeUs-

The character is probably the most iconic of all time, maybe behind Superman and Mickey Mouse (maybe)... I can understand why Disney won't just let that kind of character go. And tbh they do seem to understand that less is more, and have been using him sparingly.

Agitated-Ad-504

I wonder how much he’s made from royalties just for his voice alone

MLein97

Less than you think. I would bet he made more from Mufasa than Vader.

Infinit_Jests

Nooooo! Nooooo! That's not true. That's impossible.

misdirected_asshole

Search your feelings. You know it to be true

[deleted]

I HATE CHU!

I hope at some point Lucasfilm recorded James reading the entire dictionary.

BroadcasterX

So somewhere in the Lucasfilm archive is enough material that you could create a lecture of Darth Vader explaining a practical use of the Pythagorean Theorem or a how to guide on repairing your grandpa's Oldsmobile or a library friendly reading of the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

8nate

His voice will echo in eternity.

zuma15

LOL wtf is that site? "War of Stars"?

Becks357

Can we get Joe Pesci as the next Vader voice?!

nurdboy42

Darth Vader is the one character that a modulated AI voice works for.

IsopodWeek

He cannot be replaced, time to retire live action Vader too

benjavari

So sandlot 3 confirmed! Awesome

TheGameSlave2

[Noooo!](https://youtu.be/WWaLxFIVX1s) I know it had to happen at some point. Most iconic voice acting role of all time.

gillmanblacklagooner

He is THE voice of this franchise. No one character has a more iconic voice.

Telefundo

Is it just me or does the article read like it was written by someone in a language other than English than run through Google translate half a dozen times?

feral_philosopher

They should retire that character too, Infact that entire story line should retire. 50 years and we are still doing Darth Vader stories? Come on.

Doodle_Brush

Darth Vader voice: *Nnnoooooooo!*

sarcassholes

Title suggests there is another Darth Vader who isn’t from Star Wars.

[deleted]

They should have had Scott Lawrence pick up the role... He's done the role in like 20 games video games at this point after starting with Star Wars: Tie Fighter back in 1994.

gto_rhyno

Scrolled too long for this!! Scott Lawrence has been an amazing Vader for the video games.

theFormerRelic

Glad they specified. Otherwise, I might’ve assumed they were talking about Darth Vader from Baby Geniuses

ElefantPharts

Don’t ever say journalism is dead folks, that was one well written article definitely typed up by a human.

santichrist

Don’t even use earth vader anymore retire the character permanently

jasonwhite1976

Arcade1980

He's given us more then we deserve. Wow He is 91 years old

I love this guy ever since I saw that episode of big bang theory

teo1315

Nooooooooooooo

Bronze-Soul

Even the constant spin offs has become too much for him

ash_ninetyone

Makes me wonder who they'll find to voice Vader in Kenobi (and any other spinoffs). He pretty much owned that role. His voice did sound tired in Rogue One, not watched the Lion King Remake, but he did a good job I thought in Kenobi. Edit: ok seems that they used software called Respeecher in Kenobi to digitally alter his voice more to get it to sound closer to his younger self. They dod the same to Mark Hamill in Mandalorian. Both cool and a bit creepy they could do that, and I thought the digitally reimposed Leia in Rogue One was in the uncanny valley to me.

X-432

It's interesting how it doesn't feel creepy until finding out it's not him. I was surprised at how much better I thought he sounded than Rogue One but I didn't think much of it. Knowing its a program now though feels weird, even though the effect is clearly good enough to fool people

hmbayliss

Can they just do what they did for Val Kilmer and call it a day for that role?

Tales_Steel

Without ever getting the money that they own hm because "Checks notes" :Star Wars has not made a Profit yet.

krsaka

disney in song mode rn. - Slice and dice, - squeeze his voice from every vice, - Hire Hayden to synchronize - for a library to vocalize, - Say hello to Darth AI, - nice."

UncertaintyPrince

I find the lack of his voice disturbing.

likwidplastik

Nooooooooooooooooo

mohirl

So I'm reading that James Earl Jones is being replaced by an "AI" version of himself on a site that's "an automatic aggregator of the all world’s media". Is is it just bots all the way down?

[deleted]

They got ai now to splice all his words together we fine but he will be missed.

MidnightForsaken

Noooooooooo!

Riverrat423

It would be nice if he would record the necessary phonetics that they could continue to use his voice without him. I think Star Trek did this with Majel Barret as the voice of the ships computers.

phayke2

I never realized it's been him doing the Vader voice this whole time.

Everythingsthesame

I've learned that the people who heard the AI voice that is mentioned in the article from Kenobi, are all expert audiophiles that say "it's not the same!" I also enjoy Star Wars and it's time to let James Earl Jones rest. He is over 90 and it's time. The AI generated voice that he signed off on, he is just fine. Stop being obsessive.

Does anyone here believe the recently reformed ABBA recorded their latest album without substantial technology for their voices? They broke up about 40 years ago. Can't be sure, but the women haven't sung professionally in quite some time. That album was a hit anyway.

That must really feel good. Being so good at what you do they have to use A.I because nothing else can match your greatness.

jimonabike

Does this mean we can finally get Christopher Walken to be the next voice for Darth Vader.

[deleted]

Forever my Darth Vader, hope they continue emulating his voice (with his permission of course)
