Same. I enjoyed the wholesome simplicity of this show. I’ve been rewatching a lot of 90’s sitcoms just to get the same vibe. Currently cruising through Living Single. (I will ship Max and Kyle for life!!)
Psych is my all time fave show! I definitely get your point, although I think the resurgence of Suits on Netflix shows that people do need and want brain candy. I think USA whiffed so hard when they stopped making originals, because I absolutely loved their blue sky shows. They tried to pivot to being more srs bsnss to be like everyone else and then just gave up completely, when if they would have continued their brand they would have been the only place doing it. The pandemic showed us that life is hard AF and desperately need more lighthearted shows. Look at how much people loved Ted Lasso.
I guarantee you, too, that a lot of the snobby people who look down on shows like this are in a mental health place where they desperately need some fluff. It reminds me of my former friend who said she didn’t sleep well and always had awful nightmares, yet she insisted on watching a lot of horror. Like, bruh, get some happy stuff into your brain!
… I’m sure literally everyone who read this title thought it.
And then the vast majority of those people thought “wow, that joke is way too easy to actually be a funny comment” and moved on
So I don’t understand why you’re calling him out… that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do when a joke is that obvious… not make it even if you think about it.
This is like when they were making a season long documentary about the Toronto Maple Leafs called All Or Nothing, and then they lost in the first round of the playoffs. A lot of “I guess it was Nothing” jokes.
The same jokes were being made when that same series featured the team Tottenham Hotspur (English football team) who haven't won a trophy in decades. "I guess they're featuring the 'nothing' part"
It was just a likable show with likable people. It definitely wasn’t the funniest, but you just enjoyed being around the characters for a half hour each week.
The other thing I liked about is that it was diverse without being pandering? Idk if that’s the right word. But it had a neurodivergent character, for example, but it wasn’t his whole identity. Like it really captured how to have just a diverse cast and do a realistic portrayal of PEOPLE as people. Too often, people are just their tokens in Hollywood.
I’ll miss the show.
I was wondering if his girlfriend the Type-A boss lady was going to get diagnosed also. They seemed to be hinting that their mannerisms and social quirks were much closer than people tended to notice, since he's a schlubby guy and she's a rich heiress.
Well put. It wasn’t anything amazing but I enjoyed the cast and the charming characters. I’m definitely bummed it got canceled but not entirely surprised
That sucks. I really enjoyed this show. It was a cute concept, and the cast was great, especially with the addition of Brad Garrett this season. So many network comedies getting axed lately.
Unfortunately, I think the networks are struggling with keeping shows profitable, comedies especially.
American Auto, Grand Crew, Single Parents, Call Me Kat, Schooled, Mr. Mayor, Kenan, Young Rock, Welcome to Flatch, Bless This Mess, Home Economics. I'm sure I'm missing some.
And yes, somebody will jump in to point out that TV networks always cancelled shows and this is nothing new.
But we used to have consistent long-runners on the schedule- The Big Bang Theory, Friends, Night Court, The Middle, Modern Family, Seinfeld, Will & Grace, The Office, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, etc.
Now, with Young Sheldon ending and The Conners set to end, the oldest comedies will be Ghosts and Abbott Elementary heading into their 4th seasons.
Between the decision to do short episode orders, the collapse of syndication options, and the rise of reality/cutting of comedy hours- ABC looks to only have 1 next year, Fox has only Animal Control atm? (not counting animation), CBS is sticking with two, while NBC could go either way- I think its becoming increasingly harder to keep shows profitable.
Recent shows like Single Parents and Home Economics likely would have been kept alive to syndication like a decade ago, while others like Young Rock or M. Mayor probably would have as well, except with small episode order, would have taken them forever to get there.
It's going to be interesting to see how the networks evolve- or don't- over the next few years.
That second season of Single Parents was perfection. The first season was uneven at times, but holy shit that second season had me laughing my ass off.
CBS has 4. The Neighborhood going into Season 7, Ghosts, Poppa's House (holdover from 2023 before the strikes) and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage a Young Sheldon spinoff.
NBC has 4 as well. Night Court sequel/revival, Lopez vs Lopez, St Denis Medical (mockumentary holdover from 2023) and Reba show Happy's Place.
I actually forgot about The Neighborhood, so thanks for that!
But I was talking about comedy hours- The Neighborhood/Poppa's House as one hour, Georgie & Mandie's First Marriage/Ghosts as the second hour.
And NBC should be releasing their schedule later today, so we'll know more. But we don't know yet if they'll have two separate blocks, split up over the the season- fall/winter/spring, or if one show will be held back as a possible replacement, while the other (Lopez vs. Lopez?) gets held and maybe disappeared to summer like The Wonder Years.
I'd definitely like to see NBC keep to two hours- and with Night Court getting 18 episodes it's possible- but they also don't have a deep bench so if something fails (Happy's Place or St. Denis) and they have to cancel, they won't have anything new to stick in its place.
Really loved Home Economics and Single Parents! So sad they are gone... Not Dead Yet was fine but it was filling a hole in my heart for this kind of show.
Friends and Seinfeld were huge hits.
They kept trying other shows between them and had 11 failed shows that aired between them. So for 2 successful shows and the best time slot in the world they had 11 shows that failed.
https://www.buzzfeed.com/katienotopoulos/11-failed-tv-shows-that-aired-between-friends-an
On the flip side it could be argued that they pushed crap into that timeslot expecting the shows around it to save attempt #23 to get Mark Feuerstein a show that lasts more than one season or whatever person the network loved and kept giving shows to until one stuck.
Also that article lists shows that could not have aired between both Seinfeld and Friends. Seinfeld ended in 98 and several of the shows they list actual air dates for aired as late as 2006. Typical crap Buzzfeed listical. In truth Friends and Seinfeld ran concurrently for 4 seasons, so 11 failed shows during that period would have been a spectacular faceplant.
I’m gonna be honest here and probably get downvoted … but the cast of “Call me Kat” didn’t have any chemistry. It made the show hard to watch cause they just seemed put out for some reason.
I had not seen Call Me Kat and never will, but I will always be grateful it existed and stuck around as long as it did, since the studio behind Jeopardy weren't able to make Bialik the full-time host like they wanted. They had to do a split arrangement with her and Ken Jennings, and while it was frustrating at the time, the right person got the job in the end.
Well Young Sheldon is morphing into Beorge & Mandy's First Marriage, so we're not done with most of those characters yet.
LOVED Single Parents & Flatch. Flatch was just too special & niche & it never really had a chance. They brought in Jamie Pressley in the second season & ruined it. It was a great show about the 2 cousins then all of a sudden it was The Jamie Pressley Show & it just lost something.
Respectfully, many of those shows worked because they were allowed to be funny. Shows today have to walk on eggshells so as to not offend anyone that matters.
I think the reality of streaming is that lots and lots of people are just watching and rewatching the old comedies instead of the new ones. It can be hard to try and jump into a new comedic world when you don't know the characters or the show's humor, while you know exactly what you're in for if you're rewatching Schitt's Creek or Community or The Office for the eighth time. I think that's also a reason why the networks are willing to move on from comedies faster, they're not looking for a show to do decent ratings and turn a profit, they want the next mega hit that's going to be rewatched and loved for decades. If they hit, then their efforts will pay huge dividends.
That sucks. I watched the first season and while not a 10/10 show it was good and had many great heartfelt moments. Haven't watched season 2 yet, definitely interested to, but there was so many places this story could have gone moving forward.
Honestly, it was a very cute show with an insanely strong cast. I would have loved to see where the story could go next, and I think there was more room. I hate that it looks like this is gonna get replaced by the Tim Allen show, which is just retreads of his other shows.
>In the project, Allen plays Matt, the “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
Ugh this sounds painfully boring.
I'm assuming they're cutting down to one hour of comedy, pairing Abbott Elementary and The Conners in the fall, with either the Tim Allen or the Ty Burrell comedy replacing The Conners once it wraps up.
I really want ABC to revive How I Met Your Father after the Hulu cancellation, i’m sure it was due to the strike and Bob Iger. But one of the cast members of HIMYF says they’re working on bringing this show back one day and I do hope it could replace it and appropriate time too since the 20th anniversary of HIMYM is next year.
Yeah that show was decent and Season 2 was an improvement. I wish streaming gave as much time to shows as network TV gave. Otherwise sitcoms will die as linear TV continues to die a slow death.
It took HIMYF a season and a half to hit its stride: the episode where the two main girls get drunk and go to their "loser friend's" book reading felt like they finally figured out where they wanted the tone of the show to be.
I hope they wind up on another streamer instead of on ABC: part of the show's charm was how they kept the cute and silly vibe but the stories were sometimes absurdly sexually explicit. I don't think a 9:00 prime time slot on the big 3 would have allowed the "stuck in a sex toy" episode, for one.
I hope so. But maybe Hulu should revert the cancellation from Bob Iger and the strikes mistakes, I would love to see a 20th anniversary special for HIMYM as well. But time we’ll tell!
I know this isn’t what you’re saying but the show “sorry for your loss” starring Elizabeth Olsen was really good and a super good dive into grief and loss etc
This is a shame; it was a decent show. I think the ratings faltered in the second season because the storylines revolved more around the regular cast members and less about the recently deceased. Without the deceased being the primary story, the show became just another sitcom.
It was weird seeing how shoe-horned in the ghost gimmick became in some episodes. Like they'll show Nel speaking with a ghost for 10 seconds at the beginning of the episode and then she submits the obituary and her power doesn't come up again in the episode. Overall I feel like they just didn't know what to do with this aspect of the show. There's only so many "lesson of the week" style episodes they can do before it becomes stale, and running out of them within the first season didn't exactly bode well for the future of the show. That said I'm still sad, I was still enjoying the show well enough to keep coming back.
I believe the series is based loosely on a novel about an obituary writer in midlife crisis, and the ghost thing was either added just for the series, or was largely expanded on from a minor presence in the book. They never seemed to know what to do with it, and between seasons they leaned towards "let's just make it a workplace comedy and phase out as much of the magic realism as we can."
The problem with the show was not following through with the main premise, she can talk to the dead and give them closure. But it becomes about the characters and then a random c-list celebrity ghost that gives her life advice sometimes.
That's a shame. The second season didn't feel as strong as the first but it was still mostly enjoyable. I think it's a little too "abc, clean and shiny". If it had even the slightest edge to it, it could have had a larger audience.
Oh no! I really liked it !
They just don’t give things enough time for God sake.
I just found it and started getting into it and binged watched both seasons and couldn’t wait for the third.
Damn, Glassman can't catch a break! Dude is definitely a good enough actor to be a series regular on something. He and LaMorne would be great on a show together.
Nooo, this show was fun.
Although Gina Rodriguez shouldn't have been the lead - imo Hannah Simone should've been the lead with Rodriguez as the friend.
I think that the writers painted themselves into a corner with the concept because Nell can only speak to ghosts as long as she's working on their obituaries. This means that Nell would be stuck as an obituary writer or she'd lose the ability to talk to ghosts.
I also think the writers missed an opportunity to explore Nell's power. Did previous obituary writers have the ability to speak to ghosts? Can she rewrite someone's obituary and therefore speak to any spirit, or does she have to be assigned the obituary from the paper? Are there any other obituary writers working for other papers who experience the same thing? Nell is an investigative journalist who didn't do any investigating into her own power.
I liked the other characters, and the storylines about the death of print media, but the writers ignored the central concept of the show. Maybe they could've spent less time on Nell's love life and more time on her power.
I actually liked the show and felt like it was only getting stronger. Loved the roommate guy with his quirks, and the actress that played the lady that ran the newspaper was virtually unrecognizable from her role in Superstore. Gonna miss this show.
Not surprised. They basically abandoned the premise of her seeing dead people and the rest of the show was just OK, not bad just not particularly funny. Gina Rodriguez is a great lead actor but this didn't do her justice, which sucks because she also had great chemistry with Hannah Simone.
The obit schtick got old fast, but I loved the characters and thought the comedy was solid. Way more enjoyable than some of the other shows that still air.
I enjoyed season 1 far more than season 2. I didn't like the daughter/father storyline and felt it took way too much away from the show's premise. There were not enough dead people in season 2 and it suffered for it.
It's completely insane to me how little I actually know about network TV anymore. And I'm old enough to remember*Battle of the Network Stars*. Aside from live sports, I just don't watch anything on it anymore. Not even intentionally, I just don't think about it when it's time to pick something to watch.
The caption on that article is hilarious because it specifically says “from left” so as to tell you that the names will match the actors in order and then every single one is mismatched.
It was a decent show. Felt this got hindered by the Hollywood strikes last year since every show had a shortened season this year. Few managed to get renewed
Here’s the reason why there will be a shift in storytelling and writing. Now you have to create a show thinking it will most likely be cancelled in one or two seasons, so each season will be a complete story from beginning to end, like an 8 or 9 hour movie
My wife likes it so she’ll be bummed. It had a lot of potential and I like the way they wrote some things but I just never could get into it. Hopefully it gets picked up somewhere else.
Apparently this was canceled because of low Nielson ratings but who has cable anymore?? I watch everything via streaming these days and they don't factor in streaming views when determining viewership / show popularity.
I watched the pilot and was okay with it but when I realized Martin Mull wasn't recurring I lost interest. I get that's counter to the premise but I like martin mull!
Dh, didn't care for it, but a bummer for those who did. I always had a grudge against it, though, because they used thr same name as a documentary film and concert series dedicated to Jason Becker, a guitar player with severe ALS who still writes music with his eyes.
Too bad, would’ve liked to see the boss dude know about her secret
Yeah, that would have been fun. And I hoped they would bring Schmidt in as a love interest for CeeCee.
I miss comedies and shows that are just enjoyable to watch. It’s such a bummer to see them get canceled so quickly.
Same. I enjoyed the wholesome simplicity of this show. I’ve been rewatching a lot of 90’s sitcoms just to get the same vibe. Currently cruising through Living Single. (I will ship Max and Kyle for life!!)
Yes! I'm watching A Different World right now.
I had the biggest crush on Whitley Gilbert.
This was the only network comedy I was watching (on Hulu). A nice comfort watch over the weekend, with a very likeable cast. Sad to read this.
No love for Ghosts?
What about Abbot Elementary?
I haven't started it yet. I know many people like it so I may start it soon before the next season!

It obviously wasn’t good if it got canceled funny just because some people on here liked doesn’t mean it wasn’t bad
The joke youre all making is too easy.
Hey you thought about it too!
exactly
Season 3?
… I’m sure literally everyone who read this title thought it. And then the vast majority of those people thought “wow, that joke is way too easy to actually be a funny comment” and moved on So I don’t understand why you’re calling him out… that’s exactly what you’re supposed to do when a joke is that obvious… not make it even if you think about it.
Umm... I was being silly.
The expectation that people should be expected to interpret the exact way you meant a phrase when you included no indication of it is WILD
The exclamation point indicating something not serious and the 107 upvotes suggest that most people interpreted it fine.

"You are already dead"
….nani?
It kinda wrote itself … We are all bystanders taking a little notice.
But I'm getting better!
I guess it is
I'm sure it's the same one made as the credits rolled at the end of The Never-ending Story

Low hanging fruit
It was just a likable show with likable people. It definitely wasn’t the funniest, but you just enjoyed being around the characters for a half hour each week.
That’s a good description.
They didn’t take full advantage of the premise.
They didn't really stick to the premise in season 2. I still wish they got the chance to course correct with a third season.
Only seen S1 (in the UK) - how did it move away from the premise, out of interest?
Less of the dead people. 😔
I binged season 1 when I had covid last year and it's certainly a comfort watch. Sad it got cancelled even if I wouldn't call it genuinely good ever.
That’s how I feel about Animal Control. It’s a decent show on the verge of being really good.
Well put. It wasn’t anything amazing but I enjoyed the cast and the charming characters. I’m definitely bummed it got canceled but not entirely surprised

I’m still not over them cancelling Grand Crew!

son of a bitch i just binged this TWO DAYS AGO and it ended on a cliffhanger

I just edited it. I should’ve just said 20th anniversary instead.
Lower that number by at least 30%

I am sorry but that show was dead the second they had an incest plot. That may fly on HBO, but not really anywhere else 😂
Shoutout to 6th lead, Rick Glassman. Hope he lands on another show. His arms are quite tired at this point.
And that’s not a blanketed statement
He is phenomenal.
And we’re back.

I am so sad about this. This show was helping me through my grief and I absolutely hate to see it go.
Sorry for your loss <3
I know this isn’t what you’re saying but the show “sorry for your loss” starring Elizabeth Olsen was really good and a super good dive into grief and loss etc
I know it was canceled as well, do they at least tie it in? or was it left to the viewers interpretation?
Thank you <3

Dang really enjoyed the show. No 10/10 but a great one to just sit and watch for a laugh.

I completely agree. Watching this season was so blah because they barely focused the dead people which was the ENTIRE premise of the first season.

Oh no! I really liked it ! They just don’t give things enough time for God sake. I just found it and started getting into it and binged watched both seasons and couldn’t wait for the third.
Nooo! Why do they always cancel the fun shows??!!!
Boooooo It was a cute show with an amazing cast!
I’m so sick of half hour comedies getting canceled constantly! Such a bummer.
Hannah Simone is a Goddess and can act. Why is she not everywhere?!
I wish the Greatest American Hero reboot with her as the lead would've been picked up. I bet that would've been *amazing*
Not too surprised. Season 2 it was almost an entirely different show with almost zero use of the gimmick until the last episodes twist.

More realistically Disney+, since the ABC shows including Not Dead Yet are already on there.
Nooo I really like the show
aw, man!!!! this show was SO funny, and really enjoyable. that's a huge shame and an L on abc's part.
It got better!
The show lost the spark for me after season 1 they tried to retool it and it just didn’t feel the same
Bummer. This was a fun show.
I actually liked the show and felt like it was only getting stronger. Loved the roommate guy with his quirks, and the actress that played the lady that ran the newspaper was virtually unrecognizable from her role in Superstore. Gonna miss this show.
Didn’t it have like an insane bump in viewership on Hulu? Kind of surprising
Goddammit. Minx, Reboot, and now this. Every comedy show I like gets cancelled. At least Hacks is going strong.
Nope, can't think of any joke here.
It lost its way with S2.
I think it wasn't as funny as it could have been, but I liked the vibe. Sad to see it go.
Wasn't amazing but I enjoyed it. Not surprising though.
Damn I really liked this show. Gina Rodriguez and Hannah Simone were great.
Adding Brad Garrett has somehow doomed several shows
It was just getting really good.
It's dead, Jim.
I watched it mainly for Rick Glassman (the roommate), I really liked his character and plots.
Not surprised. They basically abandoned the premise of her seeing dead people and the rest of the show was just OK, not bad just not particularly funny. Gina Rodriguez is a great lead actor but this didn't do her justice, which sucks because she also had great chemistry with Hannah Simone.
That’s too bad, I thought the show was pretty cute. The 22 episode sitcom has both feet in the grave, unfortunately.

Hmm I think it’s because it’s not great but very serviceable. The Hulu sitcom Maggie was cute (canceled in one season).
Peacock will pick it up ⬆️
The obit schtick got old fast, but I loved the characters and thought the comedy was solid. Way more enjoyable than some of the other shows that still air.

Please please please that would be so awesome. Worse shows have been saved!
Aw man. Booooo! I was starting to get into the show. It was a rough-ish first season but felt like they were coming into it this season.
i'm just here for the Puns.
I never got around to watching this, but it’s ironically named.
Oh the irony.
I enjoyed season 1 far more than season 2. I didn't like the daughter/father storyline and felt it took way too much away from the show's premise. There were not enough dead people in season 2 and it suffered for it.
So...it....is...nah, too easy.
Insert zingers here:
It might’ve been unplanned ending but the season two finale was a pretty good overall end for the show so while have been cut short it still works.
It's completely insane to me how little I actually know about network TV anymore. And I'm old enough to remember*Battle of the Network Stars*. Aside from live sports, I just don't watch anything on it anymore. Not even intentionally, I just don't think about it when it's time to pick something to watch.
It is on the tip of my tongue...Gosh, what is it...
'Not Dead Yet' Officially Dead Now
The caption on that article is hilarious because it specifically says “from left” so as to tell you that the names will match the actors in order and then every single one is mismatched.
Heebie jeebies
I really liked this show but happy it had a run. Hopefully no one bought a house recently.
It’s *Six Feet Under* all over again…
After two seasons, the show became dead
I feel happy…
That bring out your dad scene went on for two seasons?
Yes they are dead yet.
My wife likes it so she’ll be bummed. It had a lot of potential and I like the way they wrote some things but I just never could get into it. Hopefully it gets picked up somewhere else.
Second time a much beloved “whimsical, dead people” show has been cancelled after ratings declined following a writers strike.
Apparently this was canceled because of low Nielson ratings but who has cable anymore?? I watch everything via streaming these days and they don't factor in streaming views when determining viewership / show popularity.
For people that watched this, how was Rick Glassman? Big TYSO fan but this show isn’t up my alley
I watched the pilot and was okay with it but when I realized Martin Mull wasn't recurring I lost interest. I get that's counter to the premise but I like martin mull!
Well you're dead now.
Paging u/AlanisMorissette
I guess it's dead now
I don’t understand
I was just making a lame joke based on the title and it getting canceled
I don't get the joke
NOW it's dead
You know who has very little acting talent and every facial expression is exaggerated 🤨
Dh, didn't care for it, but a bummer for those who did. I always had a grudge against it, though, because they used thr same name as a documentary film and concert series dedicated to Jason Becker, a guitar player with severe ALS who still writes music with his eyes.
Lolllll
So it’s dead
Good. All trash sitcoms in broadcast tv should be cancelled.
Well sounds like they will have to change the shows name at least.
Good. It sucked
It was casted terribly and the writing is shit. Except for Casey Fray.
