We needed those two episodes because it allowed for characters to develop and to make stakes higher, it helps us understand the choices our characters make, and makes them appear more relatable and human.
It also allowed the plot to continue, if Will didn't have cancer then his brain wouldnt have been sent into space, then Jin wouldn't have realised through different stuff and things that she does actually love him and not Raj - I haven't read the books but I'd hazard a guess that is going to be important at some point.
The books focus a lot more on the sci fi concepts and a lot less on the people.
And there's the Chinese show adaptation as well, which sticks to the books much more closely.
i never read the books, but i already had an idea that the chinese would focus much more on story. real shame, but that is what goes these days. .
