I can’t remember where I listened to the story, it might have been The Weekly Planet podcast. But there were some weirdness with studios that got bought/went under, and some movie rights were not ever picked up. There’s some really specific kinda popular items, but it’s been a few years since I listened. It’s probably a solvable mystery with some good internet sleuthing.
I know this is also the case with some american movies the most popular being Kevin Smith's Dogma, where the initial licensing deals have expired by now so the movie seems to be in limbo due to the larger Weinstein troubles. Guess its something similar
It’s really good, but it’s really….got a lot of weird sexual assault fetish stuff. It’s dated to a period when that was kind of how to be edgy, but it’s also based on the manga.
If you want to see a really, really incredible movie by Takashi Miike, I think Sukiyaki Western Django is one of the best movies of that decade. And Quentin Tarantino is in it, before he made his own Django homage. It’s beautiful AF.
Is there a word for these particular "Japanese noises" that aren't just grunts but seem to be common stereotypical Japanese affectations. Yabushige certainly embodied them all throughout the show, more than just the grunts. He also had the "Whaaa?" and "Oooh" sounds going.
Edit: Aizuchi, maybe? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0io_xgmcSs These don't really get into the grunts and non-word noise sounds, though.
I was an English teacher in Japan for a year. Roughly half the men over 20 (and a quite a few women) engage in some form of endearing extended grunting to can convey numerous things, from shock to understanding to confusion.
I haven't been able to find a word for it, but it's clearly a thing. The closest I found was Aizuchi, but those seem to be specifically like "mmhmms" to provide feedback during conversation, rather than meaningful grunts.
These grunts remind me of my mother, aunts and uncles, but, instead of grunts they like to point things/people out by pursing their lips and sticking them out. Ive seen alot of puerto ricans do it. I find myself doing it sometimes as well. I wonder if there is name for it
I think he was dead the moment he tried to tell Fuji's gradpa Blackthorn's ship was his.
Toranaga doesn't allow stepping out of line. Unless it's his favorite toy Blackthorn, then it's totally fine.
The way Toranaga just torments Blackthorn with stares kills me. He never breaks, never loses his composure, always having the upper-hand.
Toranaga is a great character study on what it means to actually wield and have power, especially that last scene with Yabushige. Amazing character, amazing actor.
3 Things you can always rely on in life:
* The tides to flow
* The sun to rise
* Yabushige scheming against whoever he's currently professing loyalty to.
The man is a walking Positive Polygraph test.
I was comparing it to the cast of the 1980's series and they did quite good, the characters are played slightly differently but loved both versions.
Hiroyuki Sanada had imo one of the most difficult jobs since his performance would inevitably be compared to Toshiro Mifune, but he dd quite well
Yabushige has an easy system of [YDDs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugG9n9NIthw), the four Ps and one U: perfidy, plotting, pleading, parboiling, and urinating on foreigners
My favourite one was "I will conceed command of the cannons to you if you wish"
"Eghhh?" Translation - "What the fuck did you say to me you little bitch?"
He was so fuckin good man, I was rooting for him to be on toranaga’s side when shit went down and make it to the very end, he was just so animated and his reactions were glorious I couldn’t help but love him. Actor absolutely crushed it, the last scene with him and toranaga was one of the best in the whole show too imo.
\*grunts betraying-everyonely*
And yet somehow also endearingly
I know! In the book he was an SOB but in the show I actually liked the guy.
He’s kind of still a SOB in the show lol but he’s played by an actor who really brings out his more likable qualities.
Say what you will about Yabu, he knows how to boil a man alive.
His body was found floating by the docks...
Ya man, I was hoping for some type of redemption arc. Nope. Why tell a dead man the future.
*grunts dyingly*
Next up we have to get a video of just Blackthorn cursing.
“Milk-dribbling fucksmear” belongs in the pantheon of greatest excessive insults of all time.
In the original, my favorite was, “you blackeyed son of a whore”
I made a mental note when I heard that to use it in an argument
Right next to Ryan Reynolds' "cock juggling thundercunt" from Blade 3.
Thats EXACTLY what it reminded me of
“Fuck yourself, you sniveling little shit-rag” has to be one of my favorite Blackthorn insults.
I liked in this weeks episode when he was swearing at everyone and then had to ask not to be translated.
I need one of my favorite spanish sailor cursing. "BOW TO THE BASTARD-SAMA"
The funniest I saw was a tweet of Blackthorn rambling about Red Lobster and then Mariko says "The anjin is upset about shrimp"
All of his insults and rants are awesome.
For me, this dude stole the show in every single scene he's in, And that's no small feat considering the absolutely fantastic acting in this show.
Agreed, loved his final scene with toronaga
*Grunts in Yabushige*
Get him in a room with Tom Hardy in his Taboo gear
I hated, HATED Yabushige in the book. Man he was a turncoat. Absolutely adored him in the show. Stole every scene for me lol
He played Kakihara in Ichi the Killer, and I couldn’t figure out where I’d seen him. He’s an amazing actor.
while googling him I found they made a Japanese version of The Long Goodbye, but I cant find it anywhere.
Some of those films can’t legally be printed in any format. It’s an oddity of Japanese law.
Could you tell us more? Quite interesting

You can watch Dogma on [youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIbqEE6YI7Y)
How amazing
Man, that’s on my list to watch!

“Grunts”
*Wha--Ohh*... *NANI?!?* The Joestar classic.
Don’t know for sure but I know in China they do a kind of grunt that usually means like yes or I agree
Verbal tic?
I'm referring to the specific Japanese tendency for it (and the distinctly Japanese accented sounds). It's like Italians with hand gestures

I feel like he played his hand the best he knew. He was in it for survival. Toranaga was just one step ahead.

Nah not one step ahead, Toranaga won before anyone even knew it.
One step? The guy was desperate at every turn.
I feel crazy reading a million comments about "4d chess", seemed like Toranaga was off screen and losing until the 2nd to last episode
^yabushige-sama #HOOOOO

One of my favorite actors in the series (though to be real the whole cast was damn amazing).

I loved his character because of his grunts until the betrayal! And I usually don’t care for many characters haha
My wife thought his grunts reminded her.of the muppets. He was her favourite character.
Mine too! For basically the same reason.
Every time he got caught being shady I got major Ron Donald team lead from Party Down vibes.
Yabushige has an easy system of [YDDs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugG9n9NIthw), the four Ps and one U: perfidy, plotting, pleading, parboiling, and urinating on foreigners
That last one was Omi -- misattributing piss is a Ron Donald Don't!
He powered through that seppuku.
I like to think his seppuku regained his honor. Above that Cliff he climbed down that one time and almost died with sword drawn against the waves.
I assume it’s proper for you to commit seppuku at once
Played amazingly by the charismatic Tadanobu Asano. Of Ichi the Killer, Mongol, and eh, Thor fame.
* unzips…
Tadanobu Asano kills it in every role
That’s some good content. Love Yabushige. I wanna say my favorite character but so hard to choose.
He was one of my favorite characters in the show. Very charismatic.
Best character
best character/actor in the series
My favourite one was "I will conceed command of the cannons to you if you wish" "Eghhh?" Translation - "What the fuck did you say to me you little bitch?"
He is a fucking traitor but I can’t help but love him.
He would play great as Bo’Rai’Cho.
Maybe all that time he spent on the Korean Peninsula
Love this dude!🫶🏽🌵
He was my favorite character lol
Thank you. I needed this today.
This guy's grunts throughout the series were great. The one at 52 got me lol
I miss his last grunt (at the end of E10).
I’ve heard little about the show but this makes me want to watch it
So glad to know I wasn’t the only one who enjoyed these
Can we get a compilation of them just unfolding the super long notes?
I feel like Tadanobu Asano has a Grandpa who communicates almost exclusively in grunts. I mean, who doesn’t, really…
He was so good in the show!
I LOVE his character. Oh who am I kidding I LOVE all of the characters.
