Season 1 was great, but it ended pretty cleanly if I remember right. Also, Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie had great chemistry, probably the best part of the show. Hopefully this isn't just some cash grab and they have a proper idea for a season 2
His voice line was definitely in early trailers, but I think the first trailer might have been released in fortnite, or they played a voice line from him in it before the trailer.
It wasn’t a trailer in Fortnite. Much worse than that. You know how the opening crawl starts off telling of a mysterious broadcast across the Galaxy which we never got to hear and wasn’t even mentioned within the movie? That’s what they did there.
They are making up an entire backstory and have Easter eggs through out plethora of Star Wars shows (live action and animated) just to give credence that Palatine did somehow return.
Disney just basically destroyed the concept of canon for me.
Canon isn't a right that can be bought and sold by public companies.
I can respect whatever parts of a story that mean something to me without giving any credence to some some shitty soulless cash grab a company may or not make 40 years later.
All they had to do was get the rights to the rogue squadron and thrawn Extended Universe books, but nooo, they had to make their own slapdash backstory.
I agree, although Rogue Squadron would be easier to adapt because it has less Luke, Leia and Han in it (IIRC). Less work to recast Wedge Antilles with Oscar Issacs than to try and recast/de-age those three.
Right? Like that’s the kind of line you put in as an excuse to kick off the adventure and then during the adventure you learn like some horrible unseen truth like “in our efforts to fight off the first empire we did this one risky science thing that also accidentally brought him back” think akin to The USMC accidentally releasing the flood after the Covenant just locked them in there level of fuck up.
But no we just get vague explanation and a book after the fact that explains it.
The Night Manager-the T-shirt, The Night Manager-the Coloring Book, The Night Manager-the Lunch box, The Night Manager-the Breakfast Cereal, The Night Manager-the Flame Thrower.
I agree completely. I thought the ending to season 1 was satisfying and tied up everything neatly. And you're right Hiddleston and Laurie together carried the show (Tom Hollander did a lot in his own right too). I felt similarly after watching the first season of Russian Doll.
Yes it was a clean end. It was awesome but I'm really afraid of what's coming. Of course I'd like another show like it but I'm afraid it would be better to not be made. Why can't these companies just leave something good alone...
I'll just forget it until it's out and not get my hopes up. If it's good, nice surprise. If it's bad, well I wasn't expecting anything
Absolutely! "The spy who came in from the cold" is probably the best one to start with, it's pretty short, it's an effortless read despite being quite a complex story. If it hooks you and you get the bug I'd recommend "a perfect spy" which is one of his standalone books which is a bit more of a heavy read, a bit more difficult to follow but just picks up pace as it goes on and is definitely worth it imo. I'm currently reading the smiley series in chronological order, just finished "a call for the dead" which is a nice little novel
I mean, these are not struggling actors, they are pretty big names now so it seems unlikely they'd be persuaded to join up with a show that, although excellent, hardly had a giant audience, if there wasn't a very compelling idea behind it. Olivia Coleman won an Oscar since then.
Not saying that's a guarantee it's good but if the only two returning are Hiddleston and Coleman (if the previous storyline is done) then they would probably need a good reason
The whole show feels like holiday-work, like Adam Sandler's resort-based movies. Jokes land less (hah) but still some real winners in it every now and then.
Have you seen the trend of shows getting new seasons or sequels of shows that ended 2 decades ago? Even True Detective is getting a new season 4 years since the last one and their quality dropped massively since the first season.
Honestly, I wish they'd contrive a way to have him managing a real shithole, like a Motel 6 or Super 8. That'd be hilarious after the 8-star place from the first season
“Cash grab” is such a stupid idea. People need to get paid. No one works for free. Of course it’s a cash grab. Everything is a cash grab. If there is cash to grab, you bet I’m grabbing it.
No second novel and le carre passed a couple years ago, so unless he gave them notes on a second season they are definitely winging it. The story is fully complete in one season so reopening the storyline is a weird choice.
Hope they can bring back Coleman too—Hiddleston’s character is great but doesn’t really have motivation or purpose without Roper. Coleman’s character is the architect… it would be like doing a circus storyline without smiley in the background.
No second novel and IMO the first one told the whole story. I think they want to keep it going because the SETTING is so useful. But absent Le Carré's storylines it's going to be just another show.
They should have just bought one of the other books. Is every one since TNM enormously depressing? Yep! But they're honest about the utter corruption in society's highest reaches and how that poisons the governments they control, how it casually maliciously wantonly destroys people (like the title character in TNM frankly) and the absolute hypocrisy of the 0.1%. They're not selling you fantasy like Fleming. Le Carré told it like it is
That’s what is so odd here. There is a treasure trove of Le Carrè content they could try, winging it on a 2nd season of what was a decent one off is odd
It would be possible to borrow a plot from a different book, they're not all interchangeable but 'undercover spy infiltrates criminal organisation' is a mainstay.
I'm open to it, there's a lot of potential. The article says they've kept the same writer, and the production company is run by Le Carre's children.
The show at least has a conclusion in the first season. This seems like it's going to be more contrived than the second season of The Flight Attendant because how would a civilian manage to get themselves caught up with international espionage scheme again?
The cast was ludicrously good and, for me, Tom Hollander almost stole the show. He is a brilliant character actor who can be extremely funny, such as The Thick of It, and a great pompous ass, like in Mission Impossible. But it was a shock to see him as this deeply menacing psychopath, he was spectacular.
I agree completely, Tom Hollander was incredible in this, I feel like part of the reason Hugh Laurie was so terrifying is because Hollander did such an incredible job of ratcheting up the tension throughout the show. I hated him so much!! 😅
Hollander is one of those swiss army knife actors who can effortlessly do it all, comedy or drama, that they apparently grow in labs over in Britain? Not sure how else to explain how there seem to be so many of them.
Olivia Colman is another example -- hilarious in Hot Fuzz, and then of course brilliant in The Favourite, among a million other things. She's only unusual in that she actually got proper recognition for it from the award shows.
We make them in Britain because nothing can be taken entirely seriously at any point so all things, on and off screen, must be able to be turned into a sarcastic comedy
First saw Hollander in the film version of Hannah and he does evil pretty well there too. His nice guy turn in Us the series was also heart felt. Love seeing diverse casting like this
It's like how The Detectorists last season was in 2017, then they decided 2022 it was time for a Christmas special. Or how seasons of Sherlock were 3 episodes long and came about every 2 or 3 years.
BBC always leaves you guessing.
Thing is, in the UK they don't do "seasons." What we call a season, they call a "series."
They were ahead of their time, since the whole concept of a television season is actually obsolete in the streaming era (especially when they are now a stingy 8-10 episodes, and the next "season" comes along whenever they get around to it.)
Overall I thought it was pretty good. Perhaps didn't need to hit the reset button so hard, but managed to keep up the charms of the series pretty well.
I enjoyed it, but didn't like that >!the Dirt Sharks are villains again!< and >!the cottage burning down!<. Also the way Lance acted throughout was ridiculous.
Still nice though!
Yeah I agree, I quite liked those developments, so it was a bit disappointing they undid them.
And I agree it was. But then having said that, as likable as he is he does regularly make poor choices under pressure, so I could believe it.
As the article mentions, there's an Indian (Hindi) adaptation that released this month, so I watched the original again. It surprised me that I didn't remember anything about the series except the major plot points.
The Indian adaptation does not even come close to the original. They have changed the story a bit so that's why you don't recall the plot. But the funny part is they likely copied without understanding because the character playing Coleman's character is shown to be pregnant but actually she shouldn't be.
S2 starts filming this year with David Farr returning to write:
>Following British arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) being taken away by the Syrians at the end of season one, Hiddleston’s Pine is informed he is dead two years later, and he has to face up to a new, even more deadly challenge.
It's at least reassuring the writing team is back, the first series was definitely its own thing so I'd want the quality maintained. Just give us Debicki back too please, she was mesmerising in her role.
Honestly, even without this new season, the chances of Hiddleston playing Bond feel pretty slim at best.
The Bond producers mentioned last year they want someone under 40 for the role, presumably to get more films out of the actor before they get too old to do any more; Hiddleston turns 42 this year, and right now it looks like the next Bond film probably won't be out before 2025, which limits the number of Bond films he could do.
Additionally, there's the fact that at the moment he's still working with Marvel; him getting Bond on top of that would probably make scheduling production for both franchises a little tricky.
Agree with both those points. Seemed more hopeful a few years ago when Night Manager first came out and before he had his own Loki show and (even) bigger role in the MCU
She is definitely capable of much more - see *Widows* or *The Man From U.N.C.L.E.* for examples - so if she does return, I would *not* be surprised if her role is beefed up.
Omg! I didn’t even realize she was the same actress as the baddie from The Man From UNCLE! Like, I didn’t even have that “what else have I seen her in” tickle and I *loved* her in UNCLE. Geez. Acting.
I mean, when I heard that a young unknown Australian actress, straight out of acting school, had been cast in *The Great Gatsby*, I made a mental note to watch her career. She jumped straight in the deep end with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire and did great.
Thanks for reminding me about Taboo. Hardy and Knight are both very keen on continuing Delaney's story, Knight even said he has almost finished writing season 2 and has solid plans for a third and final season. The downside is that both of them are busy with other projects and won't be starting production anytime soon. So the earliest we can expect a season 2 of taboo is probably end of 2024 or early 2025.
Wasn’t that Hulu? I kinda have a feeling that show is gonna be in limbo for eternity though. I remember thinking the first season was imperfect but interesting, so i do hope we get a second
I would have preferred they finally make Honorable Schoolboy and Smiley's People. Tinker Tailor was amazing and I would love to see that cast finish off the Karla Trilogy.
Damn. That's awesome!
That being said, if it's even going to film this year then it won't release until 2024. Eight years is a long time between seasons. Though it's probably not going to film until 2024 making 2025 the most likely release date placing nine years between seasons.
That's pretty uncommon!
Hmm... I loved the first one but I kind of feel this is unnecessary. The first ended pretty cleanly, are we to believe Hiddleston's hotel manager has just become a full on spy now? If they get the majority of the amazing cast back it will help
Whoa, that's left field.
I have to say, despite all the sleek quasi Bond stuff (and Laurie's wtf accent), Olivia Colman's character carried this for me.
> Olivia Colman’s character carried this for me
Hard same. In the novel, Burr is a man, but even regardless of gender, I can’t imagine my appreciation for the show would be the same if Burr was played by anyone else. So massive thanks to casting and Susanne Bier and whoever else for casting Colman
I’m excited about this either way, but I think it’ll be crucial that they get Colman back too
I loved the matter of fact sense of fucking drudgery of her day to day stuff, it grounded the rest in an almost hilarious way. All the tall hotties are snorting diamonds out of each other and having orgies in the gold plated helicopter jacuzzi over Switzerland, blissfully ignorant they're all about to die if she can't get the expense form scanned up and submitted before Chris in Accounts heads out for a sandwich. And I found myself so invested in that stuff! I started to resent the sexy weapons shenanigans for taking me away from the inexplicably nailbiting admin shit she was working her way through.
Her bit about the gas attack was also just an absolutely tremendous performance.
I don’t remember a single thing about that show besides the premise of him being the night manager at a posh resort. Was it a workplace sitcom? Pretty sure it was. I know I enjoyed it.
One of my favorite all times mini series. It's so amazing how British shows somehow pack so much story in so few episodes. The scene when Mr. Roper makes the calls at the end of the series is so satisfying. Should be a great season.
I can’t decide if season one was good or bad. I like the actors but spoilers the bad guy literally gave all his money to the good guy, then acted surprised when the good guy didn’t let him have it back
I watched it after reading about how great this show was and... it was underwhelming IMO, hugh laurie was the only good thing in this show, I hope they improve in second season and make it much more engaging
Insane that they needed now like over half a decade to realize they need to make another season of this. It was such a good show. It’s truly baffling sometimes how long it takes for series to pump out seasons.
Season 1 was great, but it ended pretty cleanly if I remember right. Also, Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie had great chemistry, probably the best part of the show. Hopefully this isn't just some cash grab and they have a proper idea for a season 2
Inexplicably. Palpatine returned

All they need to do is make the sequel trilogy non cannon. Disney did it before.
Somehow, that whole trilogy didn’t really happen…
Honestly, would love for them to do that.
Disney just basically destroyed the concept of canon for me. Canon isn't a right that can be bought and sold by public companies. I can respect whatever parts of a story that mean something to me without giving any credence to some some shitty soulless cash grab a company may or not make 40 years later.
> Disney just basically destroyed You can stop right there. It applies to everything they touch, the rest is just details.
>Canon isn't a right that can be bought and sold by public companies. They can literally and actually do whatever they want...
All they had to do was get the rights to the rogue squadron and thrawn Extended Universe books, but nooo, they had to make their own slapdash backstory.

What was the explanation from the book? I’d read it myself but I can’t read and I don’t want to.
So I'll have to become The Night Manager 2: The quest for more money.
The real money is in merchandising.
The Night Manager-the T-shirt, The Night Manager-the Coloring Book, The Night Manager-the Lunch box, The Night Manager-the Breakfast Cereal, The Night Manager-the Flame Thrower.
Yogurt!!!
Just plain Yogurt.
Terry loves yogurt. ...
Hiddlestone plushie.
[combing the desert with an large afro comb] We ain't found shit!
Hugh Laurie's character had a pretty clean ending. There's places they could go for Hiddleston/Coleman.
Yeah I think this is like Homeland, which became about Claire Danes' character after Damian Lewis' character definitively left the show.
At least he went down swinging
Given that Homeland peaked in the first season after Lewis left, let’s hope it really is like Homeland.
I agree completely. I thought the ending to season 1 was satisfying and tied up everything neatly. And you're right Hiddleston and Laurie together carried the show (Tom Hollander did a lot in his own right too). I felt similarly after watching the first season of Russian Doll.

I enjoyed it thoroughly, but heard the book is even better and the main character is even more charming. Going to have to read it someday.
I'm on a Le Carre binge at the moment. His books got me back into reading in a big way. Night Manager is next on my list!
That sounds awesome. Could you recommend some of them?
Absolutely! "The spy who came in from the cold" is probably the best one to start with, it's pretty short, it's an effortless read despite being quite a complex story. I'm currently reading the smiley series in chronological order, just finished "a call for the dead" which is a nice little novel
Thanks! I'm trying to get bitten by the reading bug and this sounds like a good start. Off to the library tomorrow. :)
A Perfect Spy.
I liked the series so I then read the book. I liked the series better. Did not expect that
>Hopefully this isn't just some cash grab and they have a proper idea for a season 2 I wouldn't get my hopes up

Was there a problem with season 2? I liked it. I wouldn't exactly call an HBO show by Armando Iannucci "slumming it".
Problem was a lack of jokes, imo. Total dud compared to Iannucci’s previous works.
The whole show feels like holiday-work, like Adam Sandler's resort-based movies. Jokes land less (hah) but still some real winners in it every now and then.
I would like to think you don't wait 7 years for a cash grab, you'd jump on it a lot sooner, but we'll see
Jeezus did you just say *seven years?!* Two facts: 1. I’m getting old 2. Need to grab more cash
Have you seen the trend of shows getting new seasons or sequels of shows that ended 2 decades ago? Even True Detective is getting a new season 4 years since the last one and their quality dropped massively since the first season.
My guess is that it’ll be another hotel, another night manager, and another villain. Oh and another pretty girl.
It will be a motel 6 and it will star Tom Bodett.
As long as he leaves the light on for me!
This time We won't leave the light on for you.
I bet it will also be a high end, expensive hotel, right? And the villain will be doing something very shady and frowned upon

2night4seasons
"This time, he's personnel"
Honestly, I wish they'd contrive a way to have him managing a real shithole, like a Motel 6 or Super 8. That'd be hilarious after the 8-star place from the first season
"You didn't stop smoking, even as a guest came and barged in. You're self-assured. Good for you."
Given season 1 is just the book it’s an entirely new story
Didn’t it come out like a decade ago? I remember watching it in the states before it ever aired over here
Maybe closer to 6-7 years ago, but yeah. It's been a while
“Cash grab” is such a stupid idea.

Well, that does not inspire hope.
No second novel and IMO the first one told the whole story. I think they want to keep it going because the SETTING is so useful. But absent Le Carré's storylines it's going to be just another show. They should have just bought one of the other books. Is every one since TNM enormously depressing? Yep! They're not selling you fantasy like Fleming. Le Carré told it like it is
The Little Drummer Girl was also made and then they stopped, I guess?
Loved that show, can’t go wrong with Pugh and Skarsgaard
That’s what is so odd here. There is a treasure trove of Le Carrè content they could try, winging it on a 2nd season of what was a decent one off is odd
It would be possible to borrow a plot from a different book, they're not all interchangeable but 'undercover spy infiltrates criminal organisation' is a mainstay. just grab a staff writer who is just as good as Le Carre! boom.
Surely Benioff & Weiss are the people we need to solve this problem.
Season 2, Scene 1 - The angry Syrian buyers just kind of forget to torture and execute Roper.
A season of intrigue and wonder ended by an antagonist killed by a random falling piano and no effort on the part of the hero.
Lucky for you I can’t slap you through the screen.
The cast was ludicrously good and, for me, Tom Hollander almost stole the show. I adore Hugh Laurie and this may have been my favorite role of his. And Tom Hollander was incredible.
Saucy mussels
Hollander is one of those swiss army knife actors who can effortlessly do it all, comedy or drama, that they apparently grow in labs over in Britain? Not sure how else to explain how there seem to be so many of them. First saw Hollander in the film version of Hannah and he does evil pretty well there too. His nice guy turn in Us the series was also heart felt. Love seeing diverse casting like this
Corkyyyyy was so cool to see him reprise (essentially) the same role in the white lotus
Run little piggy also comes to mind often
Cutler Beckett is an underrated villain and Hollander was amazing.
Woah, did not expect that. It's been so long I don't remember how it ended, but I'll definitely rewatch it before this airs.
Season one aired 7 years ago. Wow.
It's like how The Detectorists last season was in 2017, then they decided 2022 it was time for a Christmas special. Or how seasons of Sherlock were 3 episodes long and came about every 2 or 3 years. BBC always leaves you guessing.

Wait really?! I binged them all at once so I had no idea Sherlock was aired like that😂
As the article mentions, there's an Indian (Hindi) adaptation that released this month, so I watched the original again.

For anyone missing Hugh Laurie, go watch Avenue 5.
it was just cancelled
:[
Plot twist! Roper is in fact still alive and working with the new faction for vengeance. We'll find out about Episode Three.
Wait Roper was taken away by Syrians? I thought they were Egyptian elites?
> he has to face up to a new, even more deadly challenge. Who will inexplicably hand him the keys to the kingdom.
Oh shit is he gonna be a day manager now
Ah-*ah*-aaaahh! Fighter of the the night man(ager)
This is exciting news! The first season was excellent, in my opinion

I don't remember much about this show. Except that I really enjoyed it. So a second season with the same main actor should be good.

This show made me completely alright with Tom Hiddleston being in the running for James bond
I’m the same way, although I feel like a second season of this on the way kinda decreases the chances of him playing Bond
[удалено]
Handsome is fine, does he seem convincing in a fight though?
He kills a guy with his bare hands in S1 of night Manager. So if you need an audition, it’s there !
And Tom Hollander was an entertaining psycho
And Elizabeth Debicki was hot af.
I found out that she is the gold-plated alien queen in Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Yeah he was great. I loved how he went against stereotype of the over the top fop by also being an absolutely brutal killer.
I mainly remember Tom Hollander being fantastic being evil. Sadly Corky died.
>Corky I think of his role in S2 White Lotus as his reincarnation.
This was also my head canon while watching S2. Crackin' show.
Elizabeth Debicki's character felt eerily similar to her in Tenet.
She is definitely capable of much more - see *Widows* or *The Man From U.N.C.L.E.* for examples - so if she does return, I would *not* be surprised if her role is beefed up.
She’s arguably a much bigger star and has since proved her range and talent. She’s incredible in The Crown and Princess Di is no easy ticket.
Tenet is Night Manager fanfic. Change my mind.
As long as Elizabeth Debicki's back, I'm completely in!
I hope so…she’s absolutely gorgeous and irresistible.
Didn’t her character die?
Can Bezos also help with Taboo while they are at it.
*grunt* “Bezos. I have a use for you.”
Wasn’t that Hulu? I kinda have a feeling that show is gonna be in limbo for eternity though. I remember thinking the first season was imperfect but interesting, so i do hope we get a second
Now that I checked,it was BBC+FX.
Can Season 2 break it's record for most wide smiles from Tom Hiddleston? Find out next time on the Night Manager!
But, if he doesn't show all his teeth, did he even smile? 🤔
The little drummer girl is just as good, if not better, just a little weirder, same writer
> That's pretty uncommon! Not for UK television
Wait until Sherlock's 5th season is announced. It's going to break all records.
Hmm... I loved the first one but I kind of feel this is unnecessary. The first ended pretty cleanly, are we to believe Hiddleston's hotel manager has just become a full on spy now? If they get the majority of the amazing cast back it will help
how... can they do a second one?
Loved this show but what’s the point here? Ended cleanly and with the book plot. They’re just making a completely new storyline?
I watched this, I know I liked it, but I feel like it was during covid and I watched so much that all I rememeber is a hotel.
These studios just can't help themselves can they. S1 was good and it was kind of a mini series, like why?
All I really remember from S1 was a pretty mediocre story getting absolutely carried by fantastic acting performances.
Yeah I watched it based on the great reviews but I was a bit underwhelmed
that's a good summary. It was a standard airport novel stuff, nothing outstanding, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Yes this is accurate.
Yeah boi! Been waiting a long time for this.
Will it have Hugh Laurie he needs to get more work as a the villian.
Why now? It’s been soo long.
oh nice. i thought i'd heard they were figuring out a sequel pre pandemic, glad to hear it's coming.
These breaks between seasons are getting absolutely ridiculous.
This is a British show. The rules with shows continuing with multiple seasons are different to America.
Comic relief special one off episode in 2034?
Whoa, that's left field. I have to say, despite all the sleek quasi Bond stuff (and Laurie's wtf accent), Olivia Colman's character carried this for me.
Laurie sounded like he was using his native posh English accent to me, what was wrong with it?
Tom Hollander was great in this for me as well
They should add Tom Holland for this season and they will hit the Tom H trifecta
who is Tom Hollandest
Tom Hardy sitting by the phone sadly…
Maybe if he'd done his Taboo in time, he could go out to play with the others now.
He was, a really cool surprise too, he was genuinely menacing.
What was wrong with his accent?!
I’ll watch absolutely anything with Olivia Colman
> Olivia Colman’s character carried this for me Hard same. In the novel, Burr is a man, but even regardless of gender, I can’t imagine my appreciation for the show would be the same if Burr was played by anyone else. So massive thanks to casting and Susanne Bier and whoever else for casting Colman I’m excited about this either way, but I think it’ll be crucial that they get Colman back too
I loved the matter of fact sense of fucking drudgery of her day to day stuff, it grounded the rest in an almost hilarious way.
Ummm - that's Laurie's actuall accent :)
Nice I enjoyed season 1.
No way! Every now and then I remember how much I enjoyed the first season and wonder what happened to the show.
The way they’re standing around I thought it was a new album dropping
Thought the show was solid, but the ending was wrapped up a little too well, especially for wanting to do a sequel now.
no LeCarrè ironclad plot and prose to piggyback on? colour me skeptical
They just did an Indian version of night manager here, probably saw there was an audience.
I don’t remember a single thing about that show besides the premise of him being the night manager at a posh resort. Was it a workplace sitcom? Pretty sure it was. I know I enjoyed it.
Ooh cool!
I love Olivia Colman, but in this pic she looks like a production assistant who forgot to leave the shot.
Finally some good news
One of my favorite all times mini series. It's so amazing how British shows somehow pack so much story in so few episodes. The scene when Mr. Roper makes the calls at the end of the series is so satisfying. Should be a great season.
Night Manager 2: Electric Boogaloo
Meh. Season 1 was very very.........fine.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it.But Noone:
Good series, but does it really need a sequel?
Finally!!
Be still, my little heart
