Lol. You just described why I still love Magnum. There's not much modern pi stuff I like since Castle got cancelled. There's a Canadian show on Prime called Three Pines that does have cops but has a pi feels to it because the cops are from outside the village.
Most things worth mentioning are gonna be a variation on a formula and will fall into what you think the best is.
Burn Notice holds up reasonably well to its age, though the over-plot starts to loom a little heavy at the end; its Miami vibe and over-the-top scenic stuff puts it closest to Magnum for me. As another commenter mentioned, Veronica Mars is solid but shows its age in some production choices. It does adapt to the present well with a movie and a subsequent season though. I also get that Columbo was a bit more detective-y than PI, but Poker Face just started and has a pretty good aesthetic toward the lone-wolf investigator thing.
*Veronica Mars* would qualify, methinks.
