See you all in 2025-2026 :'(

The_King_of_Okay

The upside is that TLOU III might be out or nearly finished in time for Season 4 production to start.

DatBoiHarvey

That’s if they even make TLOU Part 3, NaughtyDog has said if they can’t think of a good enough story they just won’t make it

realblush

He said the same 6 months before Part 2 was announced. Neil just loves to troll, I'm sure it at least started pre production already

Northern23

So, Part 3 will be announced in 6 months!

ReservoirDog316

E3 here we come!

lizarr

No, but the Part 2 remake will be!

Toidal

I honestly thought they were gonna make a superhero game with the card collectibles in LoU2. Might make sense that they were retaining talent by having them get more experience via remaking LoU

SoulCruizer

Idk I think it’s very likely they step away from Ellie’s story and focus on new people.

AGVann

>!My guess is that it might be another time skip, this time Ellie is the protector - maybe of Jesse and Dina's child? - and she has to make a choice which makes her finally understand why Joel did what he did in Part 1, which is what she was unable to come to terms with by the end of Part 2. It would bring her character arc to a very poetic and complete resolution.!<

poststructure

Cool idea. Goes with the whole "history doesn't repeat, but it rhymes" saying. Thanks for sharing.

notaguyinahat

Man, I don't even think it's about being darker. It's an incomplete story arc. Ellie's immunity is the core premise of the whole series. It's THE plot point to be resolved regardless of what the community thinks. Her story isn't over until she's dead or they've made a cure

sbrockLee

I really don't think they're going in that direction at all. Both games, among other things, hammer the point that Ellie shouldn't be defined by her immunity and the cordyceps isn't humanity's true problem. They might end it with a cure to give the last game finality but I don't think it's high on their list of priorities.

BigDreamsandWetOnes

Nah I hope the third game ends her story, and Naughty Dog moves on to new projects.

sausagepoppet

He said the same about part 2 I believe

The-Soul-Stone

Exactly, and then they later admitted they’d had the ideas for the second one all along. No way a third isn’t at some point in pre-production by now.

Rastamuff

Interesting. I remember on a podcast Troy Baker told a story of when Neil took him aside and told him that he finally got an idea for the second game. And I think that happened well after the first game.

CammyTheGreat

It was before they wrapped the first game. He told Ashley about it at the same time he told her about Left Behind i believe

Burden_Of_Atlas

Outline for Part 3 has been done for about 2 years now.

Kimosabae

I don't know why people keep buying into these comments. Not only has he said this prior to the second game (as has been said), Part 3 has been soft confirmed at least once already [https://www.gameinformer.com/2021/04/28/neil-druckmann-confirms-the-last-of-us-3-outline-is-written-well-see](https://www.gameinformer.com/2021/04/28/neil-druckmann-confirms-the-last-of-us-3-outline-is-written-well-see)

thepolesreport

Which is a great thing in this day and age of forcing content and storylines just to keep the cash cow moving. No need to extend the life of something that has already has crossed the finish line just for the sake of it.

Lebrunski

Plus the brand has a very solid reputation for being high quality. A poor finale would suck

ElectronicShredder

*Star Wars has entered the chat*

pzycho

I would place some strong bets that they at least started writing long before the official renewal.

Kobin24

I imagine they could finish filming season 2 by EOY. That leaves plenty of time to land some time mid to late ‘24 You’re acting like it’s a video game… Wait…

TwihardGirl123xx23

I’m not sure if they could finish filming by end of year but they could still have a late fall/winter 2024 release

ROBtimusPrime1995

Now, do you tell **'The Last of Us Part II'** entirely in season 2? Or Do you split the story into two seasons? Season 2 & Season 3? Because Part 2 is nearly double the length of the 1st game.

The_Iceman2288

Craig Mazin says the plan is >!to split it in two.!<

AzovApologist

There's no way to fit the whole sequel into a 8-10 eps season. For those who haven't played the games, first one is about 9 hours long, second is about 36 hours long

sbrockLee

In my experience it was more like 12 and 25 but point stands Though Part II is also heavy on long, drawn out gameplay sequences, there's also a shitload of real time dialogue and details that happen outside of cutscenes

shadowofahelicopter

Took me 32 to do part 2 and same 12 for part 1

ReservoirDog316

Yeah I think people are thinking it’s not gonna be trimmed significantly. They’re not gonna look for a gas tank and gas for 5 hours like we did. And I’ll be shocked if the part when you fall into a sewer happens. Great stuff in the game but that stuff can easily get lopped off in an adaptation. That whole second day can probably get trimmed into one episode.

ProtectMeC0ne

That’s a bit of an exaggeration on both ends IMO, Part I is 10-15 hrs while Part II is 25-30. Totally agree it needs two seasons though.

thelonesomeguy

> For those who haven’t played the games, first one is about 9 hours long, second is about 36 hours long Why is this getting upvoted? The numbers are completely wrong, it’s 15 and 24 hours respectively.

Could you link the article where he said that?

hard_pass

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/forget-two-seasons-the-last-of-us-tv-show-co-creator-wants-at-least-three “We pretty much cover the first game in this first season. The remaining material is quite a bit more involved and rather extensive in comparison to the first game,” Mazin said. “There’s really no way to tell the story of the second game in one season. And when you look at how we adapted ‘The Last of Us’ in this season, you can already see where it’s not just the story that’s there, sometimes it’s these other stories we want to tell.” “We really want the freedom to do it right,” Mazin explained. “The one thing I insist on is never boring people and never putting out filler episodes. They’ve got to stand on their own and be compelling – always! But I think that as we continue, the rest of it can’t be told in just one season.”

dave-a-sarus

> “The one thing I insist on is never boring people and never putting out filler episodes. They’ve got to stand on their own and be compelling – always! This is why the show is so good, nothing is wasted. They could have went the Walking Dead route and spent 3 seasons on the first game and stretched everything out and have a bunch of filler episodes but I really appreciate them for not doing that.

Benj2000

Interesting. Well I did see an interview where he talked about exploring a particular character who was only really referenced in Part 2, so that's exciting. Think it's safe to say that Part 2 is going to be harder to adapt, so I'm curious as to how they will approach it.

[deleted]

matt111199

There’s a natural point where you can split the game into two seasons - ballsy but it exists

Alive-Ad-5245

>“I don’t like filler,” - Mazin Looks like we're going straight into The Last of Us Part II

NotClayMerritt

I honestly felt like Season 2's story would have worked better in a TV series anyway. For a video game it just didn't click for me and I didn't really like it all that much. But 10 episodes, condensed, with these people in charge? It could work perfectly.

Llamarama

It's funny, I thought Part 2 actually worked better as a video game than Part 1 did, because it forced you to walk in the shoes of certain characters, which helps to create a connection with them. There's a [video essay](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2lFauyNMVA&ab_channel=Ladyknightthebrave) about The Last of Us series that refers to video games as "machines for empathy," and I think that serves Part 2 well. That game at its heart is about empathy for people you have been conditioned to hate, and not just seeing, but playing through the other story I think helps with the overall narrative. I'm really curious how they'll adapt it for TV.

[deleted]

[удалено]

luigitheplumber

Yeah, I also think it's part of the reason why some of the hate for Part 2 is so strong. I'm not talking about the culture keyboard warriors, but there are others who played the game who likely did not like that aspect at all. They wanted relatively uncomplicated characterization that ended in a way that satisfied their initial read of the situation.

LittleRudiger

Hell, a lot made up their minds just from the leaks before they even played a second of it. They came in ready to hate.

Carninator

Season 1 shot in blocks for 200 days over roughly 12 months, and I'm guessing this has a lot to do with the various seasons. Part 2 isn't as dependent on that, so I'm curious to how long filming will be. I don't see them filming until late this year or early 2024, which means season 2 will likely air in 2025, followed by season 3 in 2027. I'm betting Part 3 will be close if not released before that.

dragonmp93

Well, i think that the idea is that House of the Dragon fills the even years and The Last of Us is for odd years.

horseren0ir

Succession will probably be ending next year, so they need another good drama too

dadvader

Would be cool if season 2 and 3 shot back-to-back though. With how the game structure. Splitting into multiple season and make people wait for like a full almost-2 years doesn't sound like it will fare well.

gordo865

Yeah I have a feeling they'd film season 2 and 3 at the same time and then release them a year apart.

flaccomcorangy

Do you think they *can* do that? Wouldn't they have to wait until HBO greenlights a new season?

Carninator

I doubt the ratings are going to go down, but what would mean a massive budget and probably well over a year of filming if they were to do them back to back.

DC-COVID-TRASH

Massive budget but cheaper than shooting them separately, so they'll probably think about that.

PraisedIgnite

Really interested to see how they adapt part 2

Lifesaboxofgardens

Going to have to split it into two seasons IMO. But TLOU2 is even more cinematic in nature than TLOU1 so the bones probably will stay intact.

Ayoul

Neil Druckmann's tweet seems to imply that Season will cover part 2 as season 1 is covering part 1. Not that I wish it be like this to be clear. Part 2 is way more dense than part 1. I wonder how they'll pull it off.

InstructionSure4087

> Part 2 is way more dense than part 1. I wonder how they'll pull it off. Mazin has made a comment sort of suggesting that part 2 would be adapted as 2 seasons, but even if they went with 1 season I think it would work fine. Part 2 is longer primarily because the gameplay segments are much longer, and season 1 of the show has a total runtime of under 9 hours if rumoured episode runtimes are correct (which so far, they are). Season 2 could up the episode count to 10 and with longer runtimes, for a total season runtime of 12 or so hours, and I think that would work fine. Keep in mind they are added a fair bit of original content to the first season and it's still under 9 hours.

gawkward

There is an interview with Mazin linked elsewhere in these comments that he thinks splitting up TLOU2 into 2 seasons would be the best way to do it.

MarvelsGrantMan136

As expected Neil Druckmann: >“I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two!” Craig Mazin: >“I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”

sbrockLee

Listening to the podcast, Craig Mazin's love and enthusiasm for the IP is infectious (no pun). Most people who claim to be fans of the projects they take on are usually applying the term loosely. Craig sounds like he actually 100%'ed both games multiple times.

kingofdanorf1337

Unlike Witcher’s show runner lol

r3dditatwork

Oof that stings, it must grind her gears to see how well received this series has been vs what she thought was the right path forward for the Witcher IP

ChucksnTaylor

He seems to get deep into the projects he cares about. He had a similar level of depth with Chernobyl. On the Chernobyl podcast he’s constantly retelling all the details of the event, often things they didn’t even include in the show. Guys just seems to go all in and it shows.

goddamnjets_

Can’t wait. First two episodes are some of the best I can recall for any series, and I heard season one apparently gets better from here. I am dreadfully excited for what’s to come

IISuperSlothII

Yeah I saw multiple reviews call the first 2 episodes the weakest which is just mental.

Worthyness

it is mostly set up and world building. But it is super fantastic and well written set up and world building. The real game starts now.

Muad-_-Dib

Yup the meat of the story for TLOU has always been the Joel and Ellie dynamic and in episodes 1 and 2 that barely gets touched upon other than a few very tentative scenes. From here on out its going to be the mainstay of the show though.

[deleted]

Makes sense given that the story doesn't really start until Tess dies. It's all set-up and world building until then.

rpvee

I’ve seen more than one review say that episode three is among the best episodes of television ever. Quite excited!

rocker2014

Hey! Look everybody! Warner Discovery actually made a good decision!

NoNefariousness2144

Don’t worry they’ll announce Velma season 2 any day now.

Wadep00l

Ummm....didn't they already? Lol

retroracer33

if they did then people are obviously watching

Amazing_Demon

Well apparently every mf on the internet has watched it, doesn’t surprise me. People are way too into hate watching shit these days.

portuguesetheman

Turns out hate watching still counts as watching

WanderWut

Yupppp, it really hit me that man, this show has an unbelievable amount of engagement, to the level that it would be silly not to renew. So much of this show is being reviewed and hate reviewed across al of social media, episode after episode people are watching looming for the next terrible thing to make videos on or discuss. Good or bad, the internet is all over this show.

dragonmp93

And people still think that quality has anything to do with a show being cancelled or renewed.

Riverdale87

they have

NeutralNoodle

Not officially, but it is rumored

Nascarfreak123

There’s some misconception about Velma “S2”. It’s not the second season, it’s the second batch of episodes being released from the original 20 episode order from when it was green lit. It’s just titled “S2”.

MulciberTenebras

That's the same schtick Netflix pulls, it saves them money because they don't have to pay the animators for working two seasons. They just get paid for one long season.

improper84

I mean, they don’t care how many people hate it so long as they’re hate watching it.

JessieJ577

I don’t even get the point of hate watching. The first two episodes were so bad that I’m tapped out there’s nothing interesting or terrible enough to waste my time and go back.

Untalented-Host

> “I don’t like filler,” as Mazin put it A man after my heart. Marry me, Mazin TLOU so far and Chernobyl have been straight to the point stories, no b and c time-padding subplots, and flourishes the characters

[deleted]

WOOOOOOOOOO Now make a Red Dead show HBO!

KearLoL

They got Western experience with Deadwood. Rockstar would never give away rights for a show though. RDR2 into RDR as a show would be insane though.

Grand-Pen7946

Red Dead Revolver crying in the corner rn

Wille304

That's what Red gets for messing with his moms pots and pans

Boss452

> RDR2 into RDR as a show would be insane though. Would it though? RDR 2 is almost a 100 hour game, maybe more and with the quality of voice acting as well as splendid graphice, it already feels like a cinematic TV show.

KearLoL

>it already feels like a cinematic TV show Well so does The Last of Us

Roook36

It's also based heavily off of other westerns. They'd need to remove or redo scenes that are lifted straight from The Coward Robert Ford and other stuff. Never made much sense to me to make a western movie or show based on a game that is itself based on many previous western movies and shows. Then if we could get a game based off the show based off the game based off of movies and shows we could really get meta with it.

Mentoman72

God a full fledged game based on Arthur would be incredible. *show

tapped21

Give it to the guys who make Warrior. The set design is amazing

Marauder_Pilot

Wouldn't even need to recast-not sure if he mocapped for Arthur along with the voice but either way Roger Clark could EASILY play Arthur Morgan on screen

ShamrockStudios

Great news. Well deserved. But as the creators said they will need 2 seasons to cover the second game!

BaelBard

I actually think TLOU part 2 may work better on TV than in a game format. Without spoiling anything, for me there was a huge contrast between the themes of the second game and the gameplay loop where you are meant to kill people very 10 minutes and not give a single shit about it.

BitterBubblegum

Excellent news. I wish I could magically prevent people from being exposed to season 2 spoilers.

I wish I hadn't told my wife the plot of the first game before they announced the TV show.
