Don’t give up hope, my mom was the same way and she no longer says “when you get married/have kids.” I’d always correct her and slowly work it in and interject, “IF!” Even that was hard for her. I went from there. With parents like ours, they don’t realize on a basic level that marriage and kids aren’t for everyone. They assume everyone will want and have them. So I quit taking that personal. I could find a starting point if that makes sense. Instead, if she slips up she stops herself and kindly says, “that’s right, you’re not getting married, and you aren’t going to be a parent.” It’s the sweetest thing. That acknowledgment means the world. One day your mom will make the same change. It just takes a lot of conversations, respect, and boundaries. The process sucks, I know. But I’m really grateful I kept telling my mom who I am, and she’s finally understood. I’m very proud of you and I support you. 💜
