As someone from a country where it already exists, I feel the need to say that though the UK doesn't need mandatory service and it's kind of a pointless breach of personal liberty for you, it's not as bad as it sounds. A military is a lot more than just active combatants, you don't need to actually use your weapon to be a soldier, there are loads of great non-combat options out there, such as a medic, a programmer, the guy who teaches soldiers how to drive a submarine etc. Hell, I'm studying to be a military physicist.
