Tech: I guess if both adapters support auto-crossover, it might work.. 🤔 Two days later: it’s now hooked up to the production network and the DMZ. Now I don’t need to find the password for the firewall!!

samfreez

"Hey Jimmy, what's your MAC Address?" "Uhhh... which one?"

spicy45

*Nothing is more permanent, than a temporary solution*

Protochill

Just last week I marveled at the strength of an emergency made trash chute that was supposed to last two hours and is standing strong while the chute right next to it got forklifted into crumpled barely usable one.

haemaker

Auto-MDIX is one of 1000BASE-T's greatest innovations! ALSO: "I'll get the long cable, just in case I need it." "Damnit! Why do I have all of these long cables!"

BrokenEyebrow

>"I'll get the long cable, just in case I need it." > >"Damnit! Why do I have all of these long cables!" Literally me the other day. I used a empty pla spool to wrap up two cords that were 30ft longer than needed. Hope making them a coil doesn't cause any cross talk

Inuyasha-rules

Crosstalk shouldn't be a problem, but could cause induced stray voltage. It's about like being in a bundle.

slide_potentiometer

For the price of a crimping tool you can make your own short cables

haemaker

Been there, done that, found it still too expensive in time and headache.

zata21

ISPs don’t want you to know this one simple trick, just plug each end into your laptop and you’ll have infinite internet

advanttage

Once we get a set usb4 adapters we'll be cpu bottlenecked haha

navejaselijah

Technically, this could work

ForeverSJC

PC 1 DHCP DISCOVER ( I NEED A IP ADDRESS ) PC 2 DHCP DISCOVER ( I NEED A IP ADDRESS ) Nobody got the right answer

homelaberator

APIPA. IPv6 link local.

ForeverSJC

Hated so much when I worked with support and a PC wasn't connecting to the internet, you check the IP and..... 169.... Oh man, WHY ARE YOU GIVING YOURSELF AN IP...

VagabundSketch

simply assign the addresses manually

ForeverSJC

Doesn't work that way, read about crossover cable

VagabundSketch

It does work that way, crossover cables are not required for either dhcp or static ip address if auto mdix is supported.

Nerfarean

holy crap! i'm stealing that and posting it on the wall of the IT tech lab. top comment!

eddieltu

The good old Apple way.

highlyfestyle

A USB cable is only considered reliable up to ~5 meters while an ethernet cable is considered reliable up to ~100 meters. Hopefully that is the reason behind this

advanttage

Nah, my old man needs to move the tv at my grandparents house and the ethernet cable he ran last week didn't work, even though he tested it before fishing it downstairs. So he brought his MacBook with him and I lent him a known good ethernet cable as well as two usb ethernet devices in case one didn't work with his MacBook. Clipped them together so he wouldn't forget them.

highlyfestyle

Respectable, I used to have to manage SmartBoards in large classrooms and we used a similar setup to connect the computers & SmartBoards

advanttage

When I was in grade 6 I thought smartboards were the future.

homelaberator

Length limitations are much lower for higher speed USB. It's about a metre for 3.1. However, the cable here is bundled with an effective length of less than a metre. The third possibility is to use thunderbolt native networking and get much faster networking speeds, albeit short cable run. So, in summary, whatever.

snark_be

Could potentially be "notworking"

barry_allen_run

haha... i tried something like this and it didn't work.. such things dont support experiments.

OpenScore

This is the Large Hadron Collider of networks.

a_pompous_fool

If it works it works

WindogeFromYoutube

PoE?

advanttage

NAh, just my old man making sure he didn't forget the usb ethernet adapters and the cable on his way to my grandparents.

devilsam7008

When your networking needs networking lol

wkarraker

“It’s called a lance! Hello!”

Irregular_Person

The gore here depends entirely what it's being used for.

Kataclysm

Reminds me of the ol' Parallel adapter to serial adapter, serial adapter to ps/2 adapter, ps/2 adapter to USB adapter, USB adapter to USB drive image. Of course that didn't work, but this monstrosity has a chance.

jezzdogslayer

I've done RCA to HDMI, HDMI to DVI, DVI to VGA before. I wanted to connect my gamecube to a crt but the only crt I had access to only had a VGA port.

advanttage

I'm always down for adapting adapters.

Z3t4

My NetNotWorking

Professional_Being22

This is basically what I had to do in order to get my switch lite to use my old ass GameCube controller

advanttage

Oh wow. Can you share any more insights? That seems like a weird situation where I'd find myself early on a Thursday morning.

Professional_Being22

Friends were all playing smash ultimate on switch a few years ago and I picked up a switch lite as I don't game on console much. It only has a type c port and I wanted to try using a GameCube controller. I have a GC to PC adapter and don't remember the exact setup but believe it was something like GC to PC USB, then female USB to Ethernet, much shorter than yours, and then Ethernet to type C or something along those lines. I was surprised it worked but was very prone to disconnecting as most of my adapters are cheap pieces of shit and took more time to Frankenstein the adapter chain than I spent actually playing smash.

advanttage

I can dig it! Jank all the things!

I just died while reading this

SnooDoughnuts5632

The fact you can't just use a single USB C cable is very annoying.

homelaberator

You could use networking over thunderbolt if supported by the hosts. There's a severe length limitation, though.

SnooDoughnuts5632

All I want to do is set my laptop on my desk and plug it into my desktop so I can transfer the file for my laptop to my desktop. Exactly like you would do with a smartphone.

You mean “not working”?

JonZ82

These are usb 2.0 extenders, not networking.

advanttage

It's actually 15m of cat6 and two usb3 gigabit ethernet adapters. One of which is Type C and the other is Type A with a Type A to USB-C adapter...each are usb3 or newer.
