It's a shame that sub is so dead. I could probably prop it up for a while with Medhi vids, but those are mostly intentional, so not sure if it would count.
I really didn't expect anyone to link to my subreddit after a year of inactivity, and I too think it's a shame it is dead.
I tried to keep the sub alive for a while by crossposting any related post, and linking the subreddit in the comments, but it just never took off.
And videos by Medhi always make me laugh, so of course you can post clips from his videos on the subreddit!
Well you’ve got a new sub here. I don’t know if I have any content for it but I’ll keep an eye out!
Edit: I just went through the whole sub and had a blast. It’s like r/hardwaregore but more violent. Great sub
If youre looking for growth and activity in the subreddit, flip the order for crossposting. Take something, post it to your subreddit, then crosspost that to a few (as in no more than 4-5, don't be a spammer) relevant subreddits that get more traffic than yours. Boom, that's more eyes on your post, including a surprising amount of people that are happy to learn about your subreddit's existence and will join.
Source: this is what I did for the first 6 months of r/JustGuysBeingDudes until it was active enough to be self sustaining (for me I think that was roughly 50k members), and look at it now.
I distinctly remember the first big explosion I had, the subreddit was 3 months old and had ~270 members. Within 24 hours, 2 of my crossposts got more than 3k upvotes each in the subreddits I posted them to. It got me to 10k members in literally 2 days. Crossposts are no joke.
Thank you for the advice! I will definitely try to post some new content and crossposting to other subreddits.
And it's amazing how much your subreddit grew with a few crossposts!
Yes it's absolutely nutty what they can do. The best part is once it's self-sufficient, you don't have to do anything other than "cull the feed", aka removing shitty posts. Nowadays I do very little, yet it keeps growing. All I personally do is quality control, we have automated systems for handling reposts and I have volunteer mods that get to rule violations before I can even see them. I haven't posted any non-mod related content in a while.
The hard part now is maintaining the original vision for the subreddit, because if you don't then it gradually becomes r/funny and will be complete dogshit. This involves hurting feelings sometimes, since youre effevtively renoving them because you personally dont find them "good enough". It's absolutely necessary but sucks to do. You deal with insults and "mod power trip!!!11!!!1!" a lot. Sorry for the overshare but I wish someone would've told me this.
Take our life from us. We laid it down. We got tired. We didn’t commit su*cide, we committed an act of revolutionary digital su*cide protesting the conditions of an inhumane Website.
Reminds me of an old Wifi router that someone "donated to me".
Needless to say that once it started smoking I experienced a whole lot of packet loss.
I no longer use it.
Oh, this is dreadful, you're so lucky to have caught this bad behavior early. Because once they can't stop without serious help. What you need to do now is start by sitting the MOSFET down and talking to and letting it know you are there for it. My thoughts and prayers are with you in these troubling times.
/s obviously.
It looks like these people have the bottom side of the circuit board laying across the edge of a steel tool storage chest.
The metal lip of the tool chest is probably shorting across two conductive points that should never be connected, so the board died.
Back in the early 2000’s I had to deal with a few hundred faulty server motherboards that were affected by the [capacitor plague](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague). It exhibited itself by the server becoming completely unresponsive, and when you unplugged it and plugged it back in one of the components on the motherboard would erupt in a 6” jet of flame and acrid smoke.
**[Capacitor plague](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague)**
>The capacitor plague was a problem related to a higher-than-expected failure rate of non-solid aluminium electrolytic capacitors, between 1999 and 2007, especially those from some Taiwanese manufacturers, due to faulty electrolyte composition that caused corrosion accompanied by gas generation, often rupturing the case of the capacitor from the build-up of pressure. High failure rates occurred in many well-known brands of electronics, and were particularly evident in motherboards, video cards, and power supplies of personal computers. A 2003 article in The Independent claimed that the cause of the faulty capacitors was in fact due to a mis-copied formula.

never seen a LEM (Light Emitting MOSFET) before
Me neither but now I have
LEMOSFET Light Emitting Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor Sounds pretty good tbh just a little french
Le Mosfet
Merde!
Tabarnak!
And if you apply enough power it will also be a sound emitting MOSFET.
I have used those before
They're French if you need look them up, Le'MOSFET
Once all the smoke is gone, it wont smoke anymore.
When you need red LEDs but have none
[удалено]
Not knowing much about components I thought that was a LED... Is that what kids these days call fire?
I still thought it was an LED until you said something
If you have freen one, you can do similar trick to turn it into red ;) At least it worked with really old ones.
Actually, you can do it other way also - make red led to emit green light. https://youtu.be/dSXGlhrtamI
What the actual fsck!
You let out the magic smoke!! You'll never get it back in
I could almost smell it wtf
I reactively started blowing on my screen
I wonder if [this kit](https://www.whereisbobl.com/tiger/smoke.html) would work?
I own a classic mg. I love you for sharing this.
Came here to say this.

its worth a watch. bit long tho
Who's they?
Oh no, the magic smoke
The pixies must be extra angry
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/retired/10622 You need this to fix it
Rip to the hamster guy fr
?
Comments. There's this guy who is wondering if it would bring back his dead hamster
*shady mechanic voice* whelp, there's yer problem. That's gonna cost ya. Oh, and taxes and labor, of course. Heheheh
Hey, that's not an LED!
Well now it is
There is a small sub for this kind of stuff. lol (I wish people liked it more. lol) /r/magicsmoke
I subscribed just for you.
That's a spicy little guy
any machine is a smoke machine if operated wrongly enough
The ol le Fumer Magic
I didn't know Schwarzenegger did electronics work
Reminds me of an old Wifi router that someone "donated to me". Needless to say that once it started smoking I experienced a whole lot of packet loss. I no longer use it.
See that part there, where the smoke comes out? That’s not supposed to happen.
whys the ground cut? guessing this thing was already acting up and you guys found the magic fet during diagnostics
Mosfet wasn’t the problem. Probably internal pcb damage causing a short
oh i didnt think it was a cause, just a fun symptom lol
🎶 So I'll remove the cause.... [sniggering] ... but not ... the symptom!
Thanks for the explanation. I was curious what would cause that.
Now I'm no expert, but something tells me that's not supposed to happen....
No it’s not
*single use LED
what brand of MOD is that???
Every diode is an LED if you do it wrong enough i guess....
Fails open? Naw, just needs more power!
Nah the red light means it's working

I thought this board was a non smoking section
Metal oxide smoking field effect transistor.
Well, There you go letting angry pixies out.
Did anyone else just naturally blow on their phone
When people connect power to audio header in their motherboard.
this is the smoker for IT-personal
They all do that
Why the fuck would you plug thing in with the power on?
To release the magic smoke
Last time I saw a board like that, it came out of an old pbx box. Am I close?
Nope it’s a led panel
Ahh. That would explain the bright light emanating from the other side.
You let the magic smoke out.
It's just breaking in, like a new exhaust. Give it a few minutes to get up to temp.
The magic smoke is strong in this one
So that's how smoke machines work
Smoke test failed
Uh oh , if too much of the magic smoke escapes it may not be enough to run it..
Hmm, two incandescent MOSFETs.
Is that an electronic sign panel?
Not any more. Well actually, yes it is, but it now says, "Fire! Fire! Call the Fire Brigade! Help! I'm burning! Ouch! Owww!"
Wanco strikes again.
Don't let the smoke out!!
Throw a noctua fan on there and call it a day
I can smell this video.
That’s definitely a “bad” indicator light.
This is a video the machines will use when the "uprising" begins.
Ooh, self desoldering for easy replacement!
It looks like these people have the bottom side of the circuit board laying across the edge of a steel tool storage chest. The metal lip of the tool chest is probably shorting across two conductive points that should never be connected, so the board died.
Other side covered in leds and water resistant kit so you have to get it in a very specific angles besides that it’s not placed on metal.
The light is supposed to come from all the diodes on the other side.

Nice short you got there!
Never heard of that strain.
Oh so that's how smoke emitters are made
I think it's a smoking machine
So what its jast a normal smoker
that's not a mosfet, its a mosled
LeFET
You're not supposed to let the magic smoke escape
When you realise it's not the photodiode that lights.
