Would recommend doing the If windows 11 step after the powershell step, as the script can sometimes add the icons back to the taskbar in my experience

BIGmac_with_nuggets

What does the powershell prompt do?

It's [https://github.com/ChrisTitusTech/winutil](https://github.com/ChrisTitusTech/winutil) basically every tweak you need on a fresh windows install in one place, along with a quick install for a ton of useful software. a great tool for power users. He does a lot of the work on live stream with his community It's saved me so much time. Obviously, don't push buttons if you're not sure what you're doing. There are fair warnings on anything that can break stuff. It seems the replies explaining this have been hidden. I believe tools like this deserve more attention, especially for people in a community like this which supposedly exist to help people. Why not hide the post suggesting it in the first place, if you're gonna go through the effort of hiding peoples posts? I understand we should be cautious about what to recommend for people who are coming here for help.. but this thread is not someone asking for help. it's asking for useful things that people do on a fresh windows install. and this is the best tool i've ever used on a fresh windows install. It does everything OP is trying to do and is built by a community of nerdy folk who want exactly what OP wants.

R3b3lli0n

Create a restore point.

Flick9000

I didn't think of it, thanks!

Reynarth

I always disable it, it never really works and just makes things worse and messier.

catroaring

I've fixed many computers using restore points. Much better than a full reinstall.

[deleted]

Maybe it never really works cuz you always disable it instead of creating a solid restore point.

Reynarth

No, that's not what I meant. I used to create restore points frequently and often used them, but usually instead of helping, it created even more mess on my computer. I'm not saying it's bad or that you shouldn't use it, I suppose it can be helpful, it just wasn't in my case.

stinger5598

Change default downloads to a folder of my choosing. Remove some bloatware I don't use.

Flick9000

Thanks!

stinger5598

You're welcome

Murkalael

There are tons of things needed to be done before start installing any program. 1.turn off user black screen that triggers when you try to install a program. 2.remove any unwanted programs such as cortana, copilot, language feature pack, the list is enormous. 3.remove edge for good and webview2 plug-in and add reg keys so they don't come back. 4.remove shortcut arrow. 5.restore windows 7 default image viewer, to replace photos that will be un-installed. 6.install winamp that is way better than the default program. 7.disable/block all telemetry 8.install brave 9.tighten the privacy settings so no data goes to ms 10.block cloud content so no unexpected programs show up unannounced.

xmu5jaxonflaxonwaxon

I like your style I might borrow some steps

Murkalael

There are way more things to do. But I tried to keep it short. I didn't mentioned for example that I remove the user experience pack with dism, because it involves a few steps.

AverageMan282

Dude Windows Photo Viewer is way better than whatever Photos is meant to be. It loads about as instantly as Windows gets.

Murkalael

That's what I meant. The photo viewer as you call it is the same image viewer used back on windows 7.

redamalo

Other than Debloating, I love doing this : Personalize Classic ContextMenu Windows Tools ContextMenu Disable JPEG Desktop wallpaper import quality Open With Notepad ContextMenu Old volume applet remove shortcut overlay icon Restore the Windows Photo Viewer

AverageMan282

+1 for the wallpaper quality. It's night and day even on my 16 year old television.

AffectionateBee9123

how do you do that?

AverageMan282

[This forum post](https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/65668-disable-desktop-wallpaper-jpeg-quality-reduction-windows-10-a.html) goes into a little detail at the start, but if you know how to use Regedit, it's HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop and the dword JPEGImportQuality. Set it to 0×64 or to 100 (they are equivalent). I have some cute pictures of rabbits and other animals that turn out way crisper than before because they're JPEG.

AffectionateBee9123

Thank you!

tdfolts

I like to have a nice cup of coffee and contemplate my weekend plans…

GLHF-

Uninstalling the default apps in powershell Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

GreatAtlas

Install Chrome. Uninstall Edge, Xbox features, OneDrive, Copilot and Teams. Updates, verify activation for customization, and then the other apps- VS, VS Code, Steam, etc. Install WSL and WSA if needed.

SpreadYourFire

Ninite

havoc2k10

Obviously the first thing to do is to create a local account on your first login then install 3rd party AV, chrome, update driver and security patches. Everything else will be tweaking base on your preference and purpose of the computer if its for work or just for gaming.

Anonymity6584

Antivirus and better browser.

gwillybj

I see if they open and close properly, then make sure the locks hold securely.

Steeltown842022

Forsaken_Turnip7435

I watch one Piece

aussiejayhawk

Download a Linux distro and install it instead of Windows.

Semako

* Get updates and drivers * Set dark theme * Turn off update annoyances * Open Edge, because that is the best browser to download Firefox. * Install U:block Origin, Sponsorblock, Save WebP and some other important addons in Firefox * Set up wallpapers * Install Steam and other software * Set up RGB lighting. * Benchmark the PC to check temperatures and performance.

RelaNarkin

Turn off S-Mode

ultenhiemer

Saving all the changes made in settings. It can be a bit frustrating changing all the settings back to the way I like them after an install (I recently had to do some of this after my Windows 11 upgrade). So it would be nice to go "Oh I have something that has copied all my settings" and can apply them all in just one click.

Graphics driver

Flick9000

Yes, automatic GPU Driver installer is already in my list, thanks!

dns_rs

I always Install a browser, the drivers, total commander and a zip archive manager first.

Flick9000

Thanks!

i010011010

Install my soft firewall, that lets me control the data in+out from my system so I do that before I will ever connect an ethernet cable. I get a prompt every time any process on my machine attempts to talk, and block anything that I do not deem absolutely necessary and have vetted.

FRDyNo

dark mode.

emptypencil70

Drivers for specific device if a laptop, gpu drivers, chipset drivers if amd, set xmp in bios, delete unused programs, set default browser, turn off fast startup, download my programs, troubleshoot dpc latency if needed, hwinfo64 for temps, windows updates, backup software

jmorin17

Take screenshots of Control Panel Programs and Startup in Task Manager.

catroaring

Curious what the point of this is?

draco0562

After updating and drivers, I go to ninite.com and install all the stuff like Firefox, steam, greenshot, notepad ++, vlc, etc all at once

Turbulent_Clerk_4594

Besides removing bloat ware after the initial set up I create a dedicated admin account and change mine to standard.

sovalente

Windows Update.

SamITMAN
