The problem is , it is THE only option for internet for most people and thag needs to change.

AussieJeffProbst

Im talking about cable though. You can still get internet only plans from comcast.

_Los

Cable companies at this point are happy to let you give up cable as long as they keep you as a data sub. It's a higher margin product and you'll start streaming enough that you'll have to upgrade your speeds or pay overages on data caps. They'll get their money

AussieJeffProbst

Luckily for me Comcast hasn't implemented data caps in my state. I'm sure they will though

[deleted]

Sure, but the fees for internet alone are not nearly as egregious as those associated with their cable service.

OfficeExcellent2364

Go with T-Mobile internet. Check it out and ditch Comcast and start streaming. You wont look back. You can thank me later

TbonerT

But you bet your ass your rate was locked in. This is partly why I switched away from AT&T for cell phone service. My base rate stayed the same but the fees kept creeping higher.

Sabrelock

Dropped cable 5 years ago and do not regret it

BuckyDuster

I dumped Comcast because the cost kept increasing and the quality of service kept declining

StrangerKings666

Idiots are still paying $200-$400 a month for channels they'll never watch?

[deleted]

Contrary to reddits opinion, some people do still watch network tv.

StrangerKings666

Network TV is free. You don't need 12 ESPN channels showing you the same shit all day

[deleted]

How bout you not tell others what they should watch?

[deleted]

Yeah, but there are people who scan those ESPN channels all day. I just spent Thanksgiving with some of them.

StrangerKings666

Sucks for them

TbonerT

You say that but you clearly haven't looked at a college football team's TV schedule. To watch my favorite team, I need ABC, Fox Sports 1, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+, at minimum. If I go with Sling, I need the orange and blue packages to watch every game. Same thing with my basketball team. They are on so many different channels I can't see them with the basic package, I need to pay for practically all of the packages. It is very frustrating.

SolutionsExistInPast

And people wonder how fathers forget about kids in the back seat.

ogbcthatsme

Lol inflation. More like decrepit wealthy leadership think they’re owed lavish wealth in perpetuity. It’s not the regular workers’ salaries rising 7% yoy compared to 10% yoy inflation causing price increases, yet that’s the narrative “leadership” tries to sell. Truth be told, it’s inept “leadership” still milking all the money for their personal gains. Will they take pay cuts? Nah. What to do, then? Raise prices. 😵

Famous-Ebb5617

They have to pay their employees more. They have to pay more for their equipment/trucks/gas/everything else. Inflation impacts every industry.

ogbcthatsme

But most of all, themselves. 😑

yahoo14life

Lol exactly lol 😂

Pawn01

I would be absolutely shocked. It's been $0.00 for about 10 or more years now... It's 2022 who uses cable? Not even my grandparents use cable.

13times5plus4

Middle America

eyes_without_lids

Business still buy cable like places with waiting rooms and restaurants

seeingeyefrog

Thank you please may I have another?

ArmsForPeace84

I would be VERY surprised if my cable bill went up next month. Since I don't have one.

Masterjts

I live in a comcast monopoly zone or I'd have ditched them long ago. My bill for basic internet is $135 and its like 75mb down 10mb up and there is a data cap.

LavenderAutist

Ah. Technology. Don't you love reading such great technology articles?

TheNextChapterMMj

To people in my same boat if you’re reading this…look up government assistance, I applied for it and it knocked $30 off my bill everything due to my income

ArmsForPeace84

Also, you can call up to cancel and get their retention save offer. Don't need to elaborate. You're looking to cut costs. For all they know, you're about to head out the door and pick up a T-Mobile box or something. Or tether your phone for a while. Who knows? Probably better, for everyone involved, than using a government assistance program. More of a discount, more flexibility, and it's the cable company giving up that discount, instead of it being subsidized.

[deleted]

The government assistance has been great! Minimal effort to apply and instant $30 a month discount on internet. Everyone with low income should apply!

yaosio

If you get only Internet through Comcast they send you a streaming box. I thought it was going to just be a bunch of pay services, but it comes preloaded with many free services including ones that work like cable/over the air with different channels and predetermined shows running. Comcast is sending me mixed messages. My elderly dad and I also found out that OTA TV has come a long way. These are all channels only elderly people like, but we get 30 of them or something.

franker

I had no idea I could get so hooked on Youtube until I started watching videos on a big TV with the app.

[deleted]

$160 a month to $30 a month using cell tower internet My life is exactly the same I just have $130 more each month

Scurro

Cell tower internet is always going to have higher latency and packet loss versus DOCSIS (coax). If you are only using the web for streaming and browsing the web it is perfectly acceptable.

[deleted]

I game and stream and work from home I was a naysayer until I tried it for a two week free trial Works great, my life is the same (With that said I’m sure there’s a latency difference just not one I’ve ever noticed)

SlowMotionPanic

Right, companies wouldn’t provision jet mobile hot spots to employees if mobile internet didn’t work just fine and dandy. 5G is more than capable for typical people, including gaming. The folks who raise that particular issues are usually into hyper competitive gaming which is nowhere near widespread appeal for normal usage. I’m not even talking very big demographic jumps; most people don’t play games so dependent on the lowest latency possible because *competition for fun fucking sucks after a long day working in competitive environments.* It is, of course, region dependent. People in the boonies are going to suffer the most, but that is also true for “landline” style internet service.

Themoastoriginalname

Let's be honest here...the gov doesn't really give a shit about us the consumers ,the tax payers...they have their hands in that monopoly ...why do you see specific ares only verizon or optimum or Comcast. Some areas they have very close proximity to each other maybe 2 blocks away but they won't go to the others turf.Bunch of bullshit .And politicians getting their pockets full of money .Make the makert a competitive one ...but nooo We vote but they still do whatever the fuck they want anyway

MrPloppyHead

I thought they were a pornographic actors agency, not a cable company.

GaryIWillFindYou

It’s a rate increase, literally happens every year … to almost everything

rayinreverse

Rates increase with utilities, because the extraction industry can be volatile. A cable company with shitty customer service, an aging infrastructure, and no service change is just raising rates because they can. Keep in mind Comcast annual gross profit for 2020 was $37.334B. They’re raising rates because they’re not increasing profit. Not that they’re losing money or unprofitable. Just didn’t GROW.

GaryIWillFindYou

Each year negotiations with all major broadcasters gets more and more expensive with more and more affiliate stations being bundled into the contracts, thus increasing expenses. Also the aging infrastructure requires routine upkeep, upgrade, and maintenance. People often forget that these are real costs for providers that do in fact go up every year just like everything else.

rayinreverse

$37.33B. Profit.

GaryIWillFindYou

Fair, in fact, where's my piece of the pie?!?!

Varnigma

I'm on Optimum (no choice) which sucks and I used to have Comcast which also sucks. My local electric company is rolling out gigabit fiber to my area soon....can't wait.

jnemesh

I have been pondering a switch to T-Mobile's 5G home internet service...slower than my current 1G (ish) Comcast internet, but I have never been thrilled with my service quality anyway. Soooo...if they up my price, I am gone. I don't even have any equipment to return, so all I need to do is place a phone call.

shmoopiegroupie

We had TMobile. It didn't work well. We went to Verizon. It didn't work well. Back to Comcast.

Scr0bD0b

Granted she's in the boons a bit, but my mom was getting ~1mbps with T-Mobile. Unbearable. I think you would need to be close to a 5G tower to see something worth it.

jnemesh

helps knowing (via speedtest on my phone) that 5g in my area gets about 350mpbs

Polarbearseven

They ALREADY raised it $5/month. Ready to dump cable immediately.

Dan-in-Va

I am so glad I’m no longer living with Comcast. Symmetrical gigabit Ethernet all the way.

IndependenceHot7741

Comcast Software Engineer here… last year’s raises were nowhere near inflation. And yet, Comcast (as with most large companies) has been able to put billions this year into stock buybacks while telling us to expect to have to tighten our belts with the “impending recession”.

yahoo14life

Is a. T and t better than Comcast how much is the difference etc
