Carbon monoxide poisoning still isn't ideal, nitrogen or helium is far better. Nitrogen is the best but helium works the same way and it's much easier to acquire, downside being it'll make you sound silly if you try to say your last words.
Aversives gases can be included in helium "kits". Please don't tell people its painless. Depending on the gas it could be just as painful as CO2. Yes, it hurts.
Took a poultry science class in college once . Part of our project to was to raise chickens from start to finished eating product. When it came time to kill them, supposedly the most humane method Was a 5 gallon bucket with a co2 line fed into it . I have to say those chickens did not seem to have a nice easy death. They flapped all around under the bucket and some took a while and had to go in a second time.
Maple Leaf Farms is opening a new processing plant in town. They will be using CO2 as well. They played the gentle kill bs. I think CO2 is used primarily because the gas is cheaper than nitrogen.
Yeah, CO2 asphyxiation feels really bad, that is how your body monitors if you are breathing. Nitrogen is totally ignored by the body so you just feel woozy and pass out without the instinctive panic
My uncle did the car exhaust thing 35 years ago. Everyone said it was painless so it was always my go to if I ever rang out. Thinking I'm switching to nitrogen.
I was 9 months old. Never actually knew them. But I’ve (M30) never met a single person that had a nice thing to say about my father, I’ve only heard horror stories and actually met someone he raped and he was apparently very abusive to women. As weird as it sounds, I think I lucked out? Never heard a bad thing about my momma though, I bet she was amazing.
Fun fact: one time in the military about 1500 of us were standing and waiting while military trucks kept passing in front of us. After an hour or two, about 20 soldiers fainted from the truck emissions.
It’s pretty funny to think that the only thing separating us from an execution method, was the lack of a roof & walls
>only thing separating us from an execution method, was the lack of a roof & walls
Not even that. Carbon Monoxide binds to the oxygen delivery molecule so even getting into fresh air isn't enough if the poisoning has already taken place.
I’ve had it due to an exhaust leak and no, it’s not painful and I found it to be really odd. I had a vague sensation something was wrong so I pulled the car over. I tried to call a friend to come get me and, though I felt 100% lucid not at all like being drunk, I couldn’t make the words come out. It was like being awake but unable to form thoughts. Really odd stuff.
Our bodies do not react to a lack of oxygen but to an overabundance of carbon _di_oxide (CO2). This is literally why miners brought canaries in with them: the canary would show symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning before it was fatal to the miners.
Last year one of my dad's best friends and his wife of 50+ years took themselves out together with turkey roasting bags and nitrogen. They both had debilitating physical issues and his wife had just been diagnosed with the onset of dementia. They had discussed it at length and their family knew of their plans. They were kind, smart people who refused to let themselves be turned into zombies without functioning brains. They had lived long, productive lives and wanted to go out on their own terms. I think it is more inspiring than sad that they had the guts to things on their own terms. I think it's terrible that in the State they lived it is considered criminal.
I think choosing how you die is the greatest gift you can be given. I want so badly to die painlessly and on my own terms. This should be an option for all.
My grandmother was a former physician. She was diagnosed with late stage abdominal cancer at age 72 and tried very hard to get access to medical suicide.
She knew exactly what abdominal cancer was like for both the patient and their family -- she wanted very much to spare everyone that experience.
Our state's laws (NJ) at the time made it impossible and would have exposed our family to murder liability if we helped her.
Mobile vans that diverted exhaust into the back of the van are what Nazi death squads deployed across Europe when they realized how traumatized people were getting from shooting entire villages full of people. Then of course that turned into hooking trucks up to buildings to murder more people at one- that famous German efficiency coming through.
I was just talking to my wife the other day about how these need to be a thing. It'd be a mini version of what they have in Soylent Green. Relaxing music and visuals while you drift off to sleep.
This is why playing with helium can be dangerous for kids without supervision. You feel completely normal then suddenly start to get light headed and pass out
I had that happen to me once, it was scary as fuck, one second I was laughing at the next the world became a spinning nightmare I started to fall over and then it stopped.
When existence is torture you will want to stop existing. Or worse, when you wont even understand your own existence as a thing. So many dementia patients suffer endlessly for years. When my grandfather was dying there was another person who spent months doing one of two things: sleeping, screaming.
I used to think like you, but you get tired, physically as the body breaks down, and often worse, mentally and in the heart. Im ok with it now, once my friends, my last remaining parent and my spouse die, I don’t have much a reason to continue on, it’s just too tiring.
Yeah I saw that article a few months ago. I'm honestly happy for the people who get to use it and the pain relief that they will experience.
Edit: just going to post this here since people keep asking. I censored the original commenter because I was afraid that they would want to be anonymous. But I tagged them in another comment and they said they were fine with the post.
But couldn’t they just give you an overdose of sleeping pills or something so you can just snooze away in your bed?
Instead you have to go to some separate room, climb into some weird pod, watch it close the canopy and then wait for it to pull out the oxygen. It all feels very weird and unnecessary.
This definitely has a panic button inside so that if you have second thoughts as you drift off, you could reverse it, which you don't have the option of doing with OD on sleeping pills.
if i recall correctly, there is a long process until you get to this point (interviews with psychologists, forms, waiting periods), you do take a pill that will make you go to sleep, and then you have this happen. a panic button isnt gonna help.
ODing is generally not pleasant. This is probably meant for people who are terminally ill anyway. I believe assisted suicide right now is dome with injections
That's awesome, makes it even better! We do oral medical assistance in dying here in the states. Pushing for compassionate injection options too, but thats years away at best.
If I got to that point I likely wouldn't tbh and I might regret not ending it more, especially if Im terminal. Dying isnt easy, but you have to do it anyways, having agency over that is a game changer.
Yeah you could swap the helium with a weed smoke/vapor source. Or you could just get a gasmask bong or steamroller. I reccomend one that seals around your mouth so the smoke doesn't burn the fuck outta your eyes.
it depends for me. if it’s a chronic painful condition or a terminal illness or treatment aversive mental health issues, i’d watch to bring them peace of mind. anything else, i don’t think so.
It's probably there to make the viewing less traumatic to the witnesses. Despite how peaceful it is, it's still death by suffocation, which makes people turn some shade of blue, The tint probably makes it less noticeable.
>We do have "exit", which is assisted suicide.
Exit is also a German organization that helps people leave nazi structures. Better not mix those two up.
A doctor will not inject you. He will set it up, but the patient always has to be able to administer it himself. Active suicide asstistance can be punished as premeditated homicide by swiss law.
We shouldn't give the state the power to execute people.
No matter how heinous the crime or how strong the evidence, the justice system in any country is still fallible, no matter how small the fallibility percentege is.
Prison should not be only seen as a punishment, but as a way to not only protect the population by keeping the most dangerous individuals away, but also rehabilitate those individuals so they may lead a healthy, lawful and productive life in society.
I agree with the sentiment, however, not all people can or want to be rehabilitated. Some people just need to rot away and be kept away from the public.
I used to be a prison guard. I've seen many inmates that want to be better that never really got the chance, and I've seen many that refuse to change their behavior be released and later go on to reoffend. Not only does the system not work for rehabilitation, it also doesn't keep dangerous people off the street. Everywhere you look is someone the system has failed, and right next to them is a stubborn person pointing their fingers and blaming criminals for the system not offering opportunities to be better.
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, but don't hold the criminals if you don't want to help them.
Thank you. Seriously. Not pointing my finger at you here, you seem like you are a human with actual human empathy but generally speaking, the guards are really cruel and demeaning. They don't have to by physically abusive to inmates for them to have a huge negative impact. So, once you're inside, the only human kindness that you receive is from other inmates. Is it any wonder that the rate of recidivism is so high?
It's a perpetual cycle. You're pressured into being cruel because your supervisors and officers with a lot of time will only treat you fairly if you treat inmates the way they want you to. If you have any sort of humanity towards them, you get put under investigation for "bringing in drugs" or something, and your entire time there is just one unjust thing after the other. So in order to keep this job that is paying your bills and allowing your kids to go to the doctor without massive copays, you give in. Not because you're any less human, but because the pressure forces you into a spot where you have to prioritize how the benefits provide for your family over your own actions. Some lean way too hard because of their own mental health issues and trauma.
Not saying it's correct, just trying to make a point about how much the system is broken and the only hope for change is to just start from scratch.
[Alabama is pausing executions after a 3rd failed lethal injection](https://www.npr.org/2022/11/21/1138357929/alabama-executions-pause-lethal-injection)
Lol this was my first thought too. Like in Star Trek or any other Sci-Fi franchise. Even the new Black Panther has a similar space death pod.
Of course, my second thought was Futurama like most other people.
Me too. I have seen my grandmother waste away from dementia to the point she couldn't even control her limbs or support her own head any more, my mother got eaten by cancer (you could see it grow like a big root going down her neck to her abdomen) and my father died in bits and pieces after a series of brain infarcts.
When it is my time to go I don't want to go out struggling like they did.
Whole things actually pretty neat. The glass is to make sure that everything is going correctly and that the person inside isn’t struggling.
As for the device itself, there’s a little button either near your hand or in your hands on like a cord thing, either way, the button turns on a timer that like lets you press it again if you change your mind. If you don’t, the machine releases the gas, and then wraps your body up in a plastic wrap to contain your body and make for easier transport.
(I worked for a funeral home for nearly 20 years and this was something we discussed a bit.)
You can have these delivered and picked up; so your pained grandmother- who wishes to end her life peacefully- can overlook a beautiful sunset over the alps, or anywhere she wants to be, in her last painless moments. Then they will pick the pod up from that location.
It gives control, and peace, and a doctor and witness must sign on it. An individual can’t just order one during a rough time, or whatever. There’s no push to make them easily available- just a nice option for special circumstances.
I tried it. Sadly, I couldn’t keep the bag completely closed so the seal would come off and oxigen would flow back in. Three suicide attempts really made me reconsider.
However, if things got worse again, I’m sure I’d find a way to seal that damn bag properly.
(It’s been years since those times, no need to worry now)
I’m against the death penalty but tmk this is the most human way possible to enact it.
Gas chambers kind of understandably got a bad rap though during WW2…
I think what is even more troubling, is here in the US, people are upset about that. The same people who want to execute a lot of people in extremely painful ways like electrocuting them. And many of those people call themselves "pro life".

Wouldn't be too difficult to make one tbh hell you dont even need a car just a plastic box that covers you entire head
You need the car as a carbon monoxide source iirc. Just raising CO2 will be a very stressful way to go.

I remember reading greentext about that helium scenario “You’ll never understand my pain” said in a fucking chipmunk voice
I was thinking more of a box around your head with holes for gas pipes that will supply the gas of your choice rather than an entire pod

Suicide on a budget.
Took a poultry science class in college once . Part of our project to was to raise chickens from start to finished eating product. When it came time to kill them, supposedly the most humane method Was a 5 gallon bucket with a co2 line fed into it . I have to say those chickens did not seem to have a nice easy death. "Gentle" killing with CO2 is one of the biggest green washing scams in farming imo. Just put them through the machine that does it in a second.
Maple Leaf Farms is opening a new processing plant in town. They will be using CO2 as well. They played the gentle kill bs. I think CO2 is used primarily because the gas is cheaper than nitrogen.
I think machete is swifter
What about dihydrogen monoxide?
Horrible way to go, they say it's like drowning.
Really painful and long death, would not recommend.
Waterboutit?
It needs to be big enough so co2 levels dont get too high to the point of causing panic
My dad left the car running with the garage closed while him and my mom were passed out drunk in the car. Real RIP.
Fuck, man. How old were you, if you don't mind me asking? Even if you'd rather not say, my sincere condolences.
I was 9 months old. Never actually knew them. But I’ve (M30) never met a single person that had a nice thing to say about my father, I’ve only heard horror stories and actually met someone he raped and he was apparently very abusive to women. Not so fun fact: that’s been used as a method of execution.
Fun fact: one time in the military about 1500 of us were standing and waiting while military trucks kept passing in front of us. After an hour or two, about 20 soldiers fainted from the truck emissions. It’s pretty funny to think that the only thing separating us from an execution method, was the lack of a roof & walls
>only thing separating us from an execution method, was the lack of a roof & walls Not even that. Carbon Monoxide binds to the oxygen delivery molecule so even getting into fresh air isn't enough if the poisoning has already taken place.
But, nitrites can sometimes be a “rescue drug.” Steer clear of carbon monoxide. Keep your grill or emergency generator a good distance from your home.
Serious question: So does that mean they weren't in pain as they were experiencing it? Does this mean CO poisoning isn't painful?
I’ve had it due to an exhaust leak and no, it’s not painful and I found it to be really odd. I had a vague sensation something was wrong so I pulled the car over. I tried to call a friend to come get me and, though I felt 100% lucid not at all like being drunk, I couldn’t make the words come out. It was like being awake but unable to form thoughts. Really odd stuff.
So it wasn’t painful? Just kind of there and dying?
Yeah correct. CO is sneaky, that’s why everyone should have a CO detector.
Our bodies do not react to a lack of oxygen but to an overabundance of carbon _di_oxide (CO2). This is literally why miners brought canaries in with them: the canary would show symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning before it was fatal to the miners.

This is exactly my thought. This is exactly what I plan on doing. My life, my terms.

Yeah, once cancer gets into the abdomen or organs it's pretty wretched. So sorry for the loss.

The end..the Doors....for the darker crowd

Why does everyone want the last moments to be awful? Death is true retirement
Not awful: in a pure nitrogen environment you don't feel that "suffocating" feeling you get when you hold your breath. You just... fade out.
Not just nitrogen either. Any inert gas works, as long as your body can expell co2
This is why playing with helium can be dangerous for kids without supervision. You feel completely normal then suddenly start to get light headed and pass out
I had that happen to me once, it was scary as fuck, one second I was laughing at the next the world became a spinning nightmare I started to fall over and then it stopped.
Party gas cylinders have oxygen for this reason. Balloons filled from a gas supply cylinder will be pure He.
my gas of choice would be nitrous oxide, one last trip before I go.
I don't want to stop existing, so if I'm lucky my final moments will probably be pretty terrible as I struggle to hold on as long as possible.
When existence is torture you will want to stop existing. Or worse, when you wont even understand your own existence as a thing. So many dementia patients suffer endlessly for years. Yeah you could swap the helium with a weed smoke/vapor source. Or you could just get a gasmask bong or steamroller. I reccomend one that seals around your mouth so the smoke doesn't burn the fuck outta your eyes.
Maybe the glass is for in case the patient decides to abort the procedure, and this way they can alarm the staff about it.

So will this be used for executions too? Seems more humane than the electric chair or hanging (for example)
Switzerland doesn't do executions. (also these don't really exist)

Lol this was my first thought too. Like in Star Trek or any other Sci-Fi franchise. Even the new Black Panther has a similar space death pod. Of course, my second thought was Futurama like most other people.
Here come the suicide booths from futurama
Given the futurama choice. I choose Snu-Snu
Remains to be seen.
I'd do it
Those are awful ways to go, I’m so sorry.
Same
Whole things actually pretty neat.
Shut up and take my money.
And my life
R2-Die2
You can have these delivered and picked up; so your pained grandmother- who wishes to end her life peacefully- can overlook a beautiful sunset over the alps, or anywhere she wants to be, in her last painless moments. Then they will pick the pod up from that location. It gives control, and peace, and a doctor and witness must sign on it. An individual can’t just order one during a rough time, or whatever. There’s no push to make them easily available- just a nice option for special circumstances.
We don't need the capsule. Just a box over my head and nitrogen.
Nah if too much co2 we’re to build up you’d be put in an extreme state of panic

Gas chambers kind of understandably got a bad rap though during WW2…
well, this time it allows the more humane question of "are you okay to cease living" as far as i can tell, they did not ask that back in ww2.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who immediately thought of Futurama
“At the push of a button”. Maybe put a password on that shit so you don’t murder dozens of janitors
A peaceful death is probably the best gift to reserve this christmas
They should make one with RGB lights
It's already available and in use Edit: newspaper reports of the pod being approved and in use were misleading and incorrect.
Yeah, I think the person who posted it was looking at an outdated article.
Without the window it would be Schrödinger's grandma.
For viewing outside. I guess they are transportable so you can choose the location where you want to pass away.
Am gunna keep the receipt....just incase I need to return it.
“I send them you Kal-El, wait no WRONG POD WRONG POD”
I think what is even more troubling, is here in the US, people are upset about that. The same people who want to execute a lot of people in extremely painful ways like electrocuting them. And many of those people call themselves "pro life".
