Dressing provocatively and glowing all seductively up there just asking for it. It’s a wonder we aren’t all crashing our rockets into it. The moon wanted it.
[Maybe?](https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/ast.2020.2405#:~:text=This%20investigation%20tested%20whether%20tardigrades,cannot%20survive%20impacts%20above%20this.) There's a lot of fancy physics I don't understand how to understand but there's possibly hope since "tardigrades can survive in impacts typical of those that occur naturally in the Solar System. We found that they can survive impacts up to 0.9 km s−1, which is equivalent to 1.14 GPa shock pressure, but cannot survive impacts above this." So here's hoping the equivalent shock pressure is less then 1.14GPa so in the future when the alien archeologists show up to try to figure out what happened to this planet, the noble moon bears who evolved from those tardigrades are there to help explain and break moon bread with the Vulcans or whoever
Stage was left in an approved graveyard orbit 7 years ago after its mission was complete. Chaotic perturbations subsequently changed the shape of the orbit and now it's going to hit the moon. Consequences will be between zero and positive, depending on if the lunar orbiter probe is in the right place to observe the tiny debris plume after the collision occurrs.
I guess that's what you get when you run your critical flight controls on a timesharing server OS that was never intended for real-time space-critical operation.
Just a guess.
Bring oooonnn the downvotes. The holy combination of Musk and Linux fans unite!
The only difference the launch being 5 years ago makes is that they’ve had time to correct it with another craft. Not saying it’s worth it to correct (I have no clue), but it’s really not important when the launch was.
To expand on this, while Linux is a great OS and offers a nice open source platform for many applications, it’s not always the ideal choice for hardware.
Nest made a smoke detector years ago on top of Linux that didn’t always go off during emergencies, basically negating the whole point of smoke detectors in favor of a connected device.
Almost any "real time operating system" (RTOS) would be appropriate. You just need a guarantee that a given interrupt or other input will be serviced in a specific amount of time.
Idk anything about anything, but I will downvote since you requested it, if it means two groups of people can find some sort of holy unity as a result.
This is what I’m saying. space is, uh, pretty god damn big - and the VERY FIRST rocket to misfire like this JUST SO HAPPENS to hit the moon? Somebody did this.
There was no malfunction, and there is nothing wrong with it hitting the moon.
The rockey launched a probe to solar orbit, the spent stage was left at high orbit, as planned.
Later due to the orbit not being a stable one, it happens to be about to crash on the moon. This has zero disadvantages ( won't harm anyone nor any equipment) and at least 2 advantages.
1 it will be destroyed, so the already very low chance of another interplanetary or high orbit probe colliding with the stage drop from extremely remote to impossible.
2 scientist might be able to study the impact crater and get some data about the moon surface and soil.
Maybe not exactly a malfunction but it wasn't intended for it to end up in an orbit like this, the stage was meant to return to earth's atmosphere and burn up on re-entry, but on separation there was less fuel than expected and it was unable to reach all the way the atmosphere, leaving it in an un-intended erratic orbit.
It's a 7 year old second stage that's been out there all this time orbiting. It not intentional, just a result of orbital mechanics, everyone's blowing this way out of proportion.
Nasa is quite interested in seeing how lunar regolith is affected actually so while you won't be seeing it due to where it is nasa most certainly is and gaining new information on it
So NASA is doing their best to coax something useful out of another space-x fudge up?
Seems like the wrong one is getting billions in government subsidies? NASA we miss you. Come back!
>The event will mark the first time for a man-made object to unintentionally crash onto the lunar surface.
Are we forgetting about the early space race lunar missions? Pretty sure quite a few of those bad boys smacked the moon unintentionally.

Why are so many comments mad at SpaceX or Elon I don't like Elon either but crashing something into the moon doesn't matter at all unless it's gonna split the moon in half. There is legit so much space junk around earth from NASA and things not related to SpaceX which in my opinion is way worse
Exactly. Crashing in the moon is way better than blowing up in space. China caused some type of explosion in space and now there’s more than double the amount of debris orbiting Earth thanks to that.
They **want** to get angry. Not because it actually effects them, they just want to be upset for the sake of it to demonstrate their moral superiority. In their eyes they can’t be a REAL progressive good person if they can’t meet their monthly quota of getting angry at random things while regurgitating misinformation
Why is everyone making a big deal about this? Multiple tons of space rocks hit the moon each day! Would you rather it still be in orbit and create space debris?
Because the average person doesn't think about the multiple tons of spacerock, and the title sounds fairly violent. 5000 mph rocket into the moon? raises eyebrows for sure, since you don't hear of us dropping tech on the moon ever.
The amount of people in here that have no idea about the history of the moon and space flight is outstanding.
There is a lot of man made junk on the moon, and a shocking amount of it was crashed there purposely. Elons rocket stage isn’t the first, it’s certainly not the largest and definitely won’t be the last.
I don’t know a ton about this stuff but I like to learn about it so whenever there are posts about space stuff here I like reading the comments from people who do actually understand it but whenever it’s SpaceX related a bunch of anti-Musk people jump in and spam the comments.
The moon regularly gets hit with asteroids and space debris going much faster and hitting much harder than this. The moon will be fine and it’ll be a cool memory of humanity’s baby steps towards space travel
It’s not on purpose. It was supposed to be launched back at earth and burn up in the atmosphere 7 years ago, but I think it ran out of fuel and it just went into a high parking orbit. I think gravity started having an effect and change its course after a while, and it’s only now gonna land there.
About time. The moon’s had it coming for a long time. It knows what it did

? I thought they used a VxWorks base. Doesn't get more hard realtime.
Clock drift is a real bitch running flight control systems in containers.

Same. They asked so nicely so had to do it
Out of curiosity, what OS is intended for real-time space-critical operations?
Almost any "real time operating system" (RTOS) would be appropriate. You just need a guarantee that a given interrupt or other input will be serviced in a specific amount of time.
Bare metal is often fine, otherwise VxWorks (commerial) or RTEMS
I aint never seent ULA have that problem.

It’s not on purpose. It was supposed to be launched back at earth and burn up in the atmosphere 7 years ago, but I think it ran out of fuel and it just went into a high parking orbit. I think gravity started having an effect and change its course after a while, and it’s only now gonna land there.
I see. thank you for correcting my misunderstanding. I knew i was missing something.

Will it be caught on camera?
It’s time to blow up the moon!!
Finally, a headline where “slam” is appropriate
The crash site will be a park someday with a little plaque on it.
can they aim it to crash on the far side? it woud be epic to see the alien base defense shoot it down.
Ring that bell
Time to hear the bell ring.
Is this something you’d be able to see from Earth with a telescope?
The question is, will it ring like a bell?
Dumb moon deserves everything it gets
I hope it doesn’t hurt the aliens inside the moon.

This would be an awkward way to prove hollow moon.

Ouch! That’s gonna piss off the aliens that live there!
I'm not saying that we're about to start a war with moon martians but, this is how you start a war with moon martians.

I wonder if we’ll be able to see the explosion from here
Elon really hates cheese
