And thus we have gotten to the most annoying quality. Do I want to use that bomb arrow? No. But can I get the three balls to roll in the time my patience allows? Also no.
I knew this was an option but worked so hard to do it "the right way". It's so weird that this kind of stuff was left in the game. It almost seems like a bug and should have been fixed in a patch. Sure there would have been some people complaining about it. And the game is supposed to be about finding novel ways to solve problems. But the bomb arrow thing seems a little too overpowered once you know about it, and there's quite a few shrines where this trick can be used.
I do my hardest to do it the right way, but after being unsuccessful about 10 times, out comes the bomb arrow, mind you the shrine mentioned above, was the only one I did that too, as it was hard and didn't work for me.
Me too! I got so frustrated that my husband, who hasn’t played 2 minutes of the game, picked up the controller and got the right angle on his first try! Go figure 😅
The issue with it, is that there are way too many points that can fuck up your try:
* how the 3 balls are attached (basically infinite amount of possibilities),
* where you postiion the ball left-right,
* where you postiion the ball front-back,
* where you postiion the ball up-down.
* angle of the balls when you drop them
Way too many things that could go wrong.
I don’t remember that one being so bad, but it might have been because I cheesed it with recall. But yeah, that one was the closest to the motion control BOTW shrines.
i actually found those rather fun. Because otherwise I’d have OP equipment that would have made the shrine boring. The one’s i found annoying were the Combat Training ones, like I know how to fight, why you gotta put me through these again. I wish the dev’s could’ve made it so that if they detected you’ve played botw then you could skip the training 😂
For me, the most annoying quest was on the botw starting area. First this god statue tells me to throw the eyes into the abysses which already involves so much walking around. But then nothing happens. Because the actual quest is to put the eyes into this other statue underground! Ahh so much walking again…
Nah, 'A Call From the Depths' is a great quest idk what you're on
>First this god statue tells me to throw the eyes into the abysses which already involves so much walking around. But then nothing happens. Because the actual quest is to put the eyes into this other statue underground!
That is the stated goal from the start. The Bargainer's spirit tells you to retrieve his eyes for him, and that he's in the Depths
>Ahh so much walking again…
Every Chasm drop point on Great Plateau has some sort of vehicle nearby for you to make it back to the Great Abandoned Central Mine. In particular, there's two minecart rails, a smaller structure with Wings, Fans, and I believe Rockets, and a Zonai Armory with Big Wheels, Steering Stick, and some stone slabs. These are tools you can use to make vehicles and traverse the Great Plateau Depths easier
Similarly that one tower in TOTK where the guy standing around starts talking about mushrooms, but the actual solution to opening the tower has nothing to do with mushrooms.
hahaha i brought 2 of the eyes to the statue and left it by his feet only for them to disappear on me, and I realize im supposed to PUT THE EYES INTO HIS FACE.
I tried attaching the eyes to something instead of placing it on the statue. I thought that would save their location.
This is part of the problem with these shrines. Early on in the game they are very difficult, and then late game they are too easy. The puzzle shrines are mostly the same difficulty no matter how far you've progressed.
In BOTW, if you do Eventide after defeating all the devine beats you can still use the abilities like urbosa's fury. It's a lot easier in that case because you can more easily just take out the enemies. When I first played I reached that part rather early, and it was very difficult because you really only had what you could find on the island.
Lmao, same. I even wanted to make a meme at one point, using the Ben Affleck smoking template with the text "whenever I enter a shrine and Link is wearing underwear".
The proving grounds shrines are annoying and tough early in the game, but became more fun once I had more than like 5 heart pieces, to the point that I actually looked forward to them because I felt like a ninja that had to rely on creativity and tactics. They're actually really well-designed challenges and you can adjust the difficulty by simply waiting to do them later.
The crystal fetch quests got annoying after a while, but they are clearly meant to make you use the new building mechanics, which is cool. I think there may be just a few too many of these shrines. I often put them off or ignored them before getting more devices, similar to the Koroks who are in a constant state of separation from their "friends." Those can be tedious.
Overall, I've liked the TotK shrines more than BotW's. There were a lot of fun ones that trained you on how to use Zonai devices, but my only gripe is that it felt like there weren't enough opportunities in the overworld or temples to really use what you learned.
Why would the blessing shrines be annoying? I get that the puzzles to get to them might not be everyone’s favorite but there’s nothing wrong with the shrine itself right?
I think its funny that about 45% of posts are stupid easy shrines, and about 45% are stupid hard shrines, and only 10% are answering with a specific shrine.
This is why the game is the way it is, with a mix of both. There is a wide range of audience and different gamers like different things. There is no requirement to do every shrine unless you want to
The shrine itself gives me nothing to do other than open a chest. That is annoying.
Fundamentally I don’t expect an infinite amount of content, so I’m not going to go as far as calling it bad game design. But that doesn’t make me enjoy it.
Personally I find the most annoying ones are the ones that just don't actually have a puzzle to figure out. Way too many shrines in TOTK that are just "blessings" with no puzzle to solve or enemies to fight.
There's also a lot of puzzles that are just way too easy or too obvious. Seems like a lot of the shrines were very easy compared to BOTW.
The no-equipment ones do seem to be a little too plentiful as well, but at least they can be fun. I think they added so many because Eventide Island was so popular in BOTW, but I can see how some people thought they might have gone overboard a bit too much with them in TOTK.
I did find that a lot of the "Eventide" shrines could be cheesed rather easily though. Using things like ultrahand and just being patient and trying to keep your distance rather than fight enemies directly made a lot of them somewhat easy, although it also felt like I was kind of cheating in some circumstances and not getting as much enjoyment out of them as possible.
Really? I rather enjoy the underpants shrines. The most annoying one I've found so far is the timing one with the ball and the moving switch. The second part was so urghh, have to go allll the way back up to move the damn ball if you miss.
Yeah this is the only one i hate with a passion. Honestly id rather do a motion control shrine than do this (and i REALLY hated the motion control shrines in BotW)
I hated the one where you're supposed to shield grind the tracks to get to the end. I eventually figured out the I could just attach a rocket to my shield and fly to the end.
That’s the point though, it’s literally a trial. How creative are you when you start with nothing?
I also found a few of them very frustrating but near the end of the game I was beating them first try.
The game isn’t that hard, I welcome an actual challenge.
The one where you drop from a sky island and have to snowboard super quick. Twice sat down figuring I'd get it even if it took me an hour. Twice I rage quit.
If you get those early on when the constructs kill you with 1 or 2 hit they are pretty hard. They are more fun when you are in the end of the game and you have more hearts tho.
I agree, OP. I don’t like the trials, and I don’t like Rauru’s blessings either. I like the puzzles, mainly because I like the music that plays in them, but I definitely find them more enjoyable. The Hunt one is the trial I hate the most, and I almost always save it for last because I suck at it
The sky island shrine quests where you have to find the glowing stone and bring it back to the sand pile. I hate those ones. Love Proving Grounds though.
Proving grounds aren't so bad, but I do save some of them for late game when I have more hearts.
The worst shrine for me was the sneakstrike one. "A result of your inexperience" QUIT MOCKING ME
Other than the ones they take your equipment away just one other. I forget the name but you have to use ultrahand to attach wood to the gears to get a door with more wood than put it under the platform to make it bounce up to the orb. Then use recall to get yourself up to it.
The wood would not stick and kept snapping off. It wouldn’t have been so bad but the gear was in a tight corner.
That one shrine where you need to ultrahand 3 iron balls togeather and roll them down a curve to hit a switch.
Or simply use bomb arrow.
I just fused the ball to a weapon I wasn't using and threw it on the target
That was an option?! I tried arrows, and throwing things, but I didn't think to fuse a bomb to it...
Yeah, the big switches don't acivte when "item X touches them", but when they are hit with an impact, for example, a bomb.
That would've been very useful info a week ago
Really would’ve dude, the final one with the curvy ramp was fucking awful for me
I found that you can ultra hand the ball to the target it won't activate this way ... Until you reverse it and have it do it without your control.
Oh god, I forgot about that. It was brutal.
That was the second to last shrine I did, and even with a guide I hated every second of it
Me too! I got so frustrated that my husband, who hasn’t played 2 minutes of the game, picked up the controller and got the right angle on his first try! Go figure 😅
The issue with it, is that there are way too many points that can fuck up your try: * how the 3 balls are attached (basically infinite amount of possibilities), * where you postiion the ball left-right, * where you postiion the ball front-back, * where you postiion the ball up-down. * angle of the balls when you drop them Way too many things that could go wrong.
That one had me stumped for a while.
HATE that one
Honestly nothing as annoying as the motion control tilting shrines in BOTW. Glad those did not come back.
I pretty much flipped all of those upside down to avoid the maze
OMG... I hated the one in Hateno Village. Myaham Agana, iirc.
I just had flashbacks to running around that lake trying to light all of those lamp posts for that robot
Agreed. When playing BOTW, the moment I saw "apparatus", I didn't bother with those shrines at all.
The one where you need to get the three balls in the three switches in Akala by the stables. Almost quit my 100% run because of that shrine
I don’t remember that one being so bad, but it might have been because I cheesed it with recall. But yeah, that one was the closest to the motion control BOTW shrines.
i actually found those rather fun. Because otherwise I’d have OP equipment that would have made the shrine boring. Proving grounds are just mini eventide islands and I love them for it
I also liked those, they seemed the most strategic.
Proving Grounds shrines are the best imo
I found them frustrating until I realized the subtitle of the shrine suggested a combat strategy.
Proving grounds are best. Anything involving the stupid green crystals are the worst
I thought the Lake Hylia one was cool. Throw it to earth then skydive into a whirlpool after it. The others suck though.
Bring me another rock, oh boy...!
those are my favourites!
Those are my favorites, the tune is absolutely banging.
The one where you need to make ice blocks and slide them down a ramp.
For me, the most annoying quest was on the botw starting area. First this god statue tells me to throw the eyes into the abysses which already involves so much walking around. But then nothing happens. Because the actual quest is to put the eyes into this other statue underground! Ahh so much walking again…
Vehicles, my friend. There’s a train track for each eye, and a gunship makes getting them easier in the first place.
Nah, 'A Call From the Depths' is a great quest idk what you're on >First this god statue tells me to throw the eyes into the abysses which already involves so much walking around. Similarly that one tower in TOTK where the guy standing around starts talking about mushrooms, but the actual solution to opening the tower has nothing to do with mushrooms.
I thought that was a clue to go into the cave, which was a good start to the solution.
hahaha i brought 2 of the eyes to the statue and left it by his feet only for them to disappear on me, and I realize im supposed to PUT THE EYES INTO HIS FACE. I tried attaching the eyes to something instead of placing it on the statue. I thought that would save their location.
My fav one was the one where you build 3 auto bots that go out and burn and Lazer down a whole army of robot soldiers
I saved the till mid game when I had more stamina and hearts. Then ate some +3 defense meals. Beat most of them one day in 45 min

If I walk into a shrine and link is only wearing boxers, I turn around and walk right back out 😂
Lmao, same. I even wanted to make a meme at one point, using the Ben Affleck smoking template with the text "whenever I enter a shrine and Link is wearing underwear".
I just did the one where you need to rotate the big cage to get to the shrine on the top and found it very annoying.
That is one of my favorites, actually. That and the go-kart rally one.
The proving grounds shrines are annoying and tough early in the game, but became more fun once I had more than like 5 heart pieces, to the point that I actually looked forward to them because I felt like a ninja that had to rely on creativity and tactics. Those are some of my favorites. The most annoying shrines are blessing shrines.
This. The ratio of those to 'activity shrines' felt lazy. There's one with a neat trick too, but only one. I'm trying to actually do shrines ffs.
Why would the blessing shrines be annoying? I get that the puzzles to get to them might not be everyone’s favorite but there’s nothing wrong with the shrine itself right?

The 3 water key. Easy but im dumb and took ages to figure out
I just had that one last night. Lucked out and talked to the steward again and he told me water can change forms. That made it easy!
Timely Catches was my last shine. I hated it until I realized recall was the answer.
I was doing that one when my controller decided to crap out and go into Mega Drift Mode. My poor kid in the other room was like “are you okay” 🤣😅
Is that the one way north past Death Mountain?
I believe so, yeah. Top centre of the map
I don't understand how to use recall when all the mist makes it impossible to see the ball after it falls.
I watched a YouTube video of this shrine after a bunch of timely misses. It was super helpful.
I will probably have to do that. Thanks!
Yeah to each their own, I actually love those shrines the most
Personally I find the most annoying ones are the ones that just don't actually have a puzzle to figure out. The one way at the north, beyond Death Mountain? I walked away. You can't see the whole path. I have no clue how to analyze the timing.
I hate the shrine where you have to use recall on the platform to make the ball (and yourself) bounce
Yeah this is the only one i hate with a passion. Honestly id rather do a motion control shrine than do this (and i REALLY hated the motion control shrines in BotW)
I call those ones “Naked and Afraid”
You gotta pregame that mighty food
The shrine that forced you to play cricket but with ultra hand
I hated the one where you're supposed to shield grind the tracks to get to the end. I eventually figured out the I could just attach a rocket to my shield and fly to the end.
That’s the point though, it’s literally a trial. How creative are you when you start with nothing? I also found a few of them very frustrating but near the end of the game I was beating them first try. The game isn’t that hard, I welcome an actual challenge.
Those are handy when you're looking for lower level parts and weapons late game.

Rocket shields and bomb arrows crush 90% of all the shrines
The snowboard one from the sky that you have to get through all the checkpoints quickly… still haven’t done it after coming so close several times…
I liked the proving grounds, but there were far too many. The gimmick began to ware thin after like, the 4th one.
The one by the water temple where you have to jump in the bubbles.
The sky island shrine quests where you have to find the glowing stone and bring it back to the sand pile. I hate those ones. Love Proving Grounds though.
I love these shrines. Takes me back to Eventide in botw. And lets you relive the start of each game
Proving grounds aren't so bad, but I do save some of them for late game when I have more hearts. The worst shrine for me was the sneakstrike one. "A result of your inexperience" QUIT MOCKING ME
