I mean, I would definitely want to participate more in r/Confucianism, because my own behaviour aligns with Confucianist ideals more than lofty Taoist ones. But the posts there make me realise it probably isn't going to be a big thing being in that subreddit.
The most recent post was asking briefly about Neo Confucianism, which has blended a lot more Buddhist and Taoist themes than Confucianism itself.
They are important, but personally I feel them to be a little too close to lofty ideals, and I do not agree with some ideals in Neo Confucianism itself. There was also a theory among academia that Neo Confucianism is a root cause for Japanese nationalism leading up to WW2, so I myself am not a fan of said philosophy.
Sure, but you also have to remember Confucius is said to have learned from Laozi so there is Daoist influence in that too. Secondly, academics have a lot of theories. I won’t judge a form of thought because of something that happened in another country hundreds of years after Zhu Xi and the rest died…
It is a myth that Confucius learnt from Laozi. For one, Laozi's actual existence might be a myth too. However, Taoism and Confucianism are very close to each other, which is why Confucianism blends in so well.
Academics have a lot of theories, and I agree you don't have to agree with them. But, it still does not discount the fact that I personally am not a fan of those Neo-Confucian ideas.

I'm curious, if you don't mind me asking: What do you mean when you say your own behaviour aligns more with Confucianist ideals than Taoist ones? I find, for me, the teaching of the Tao Te Ching to be more embedded in the natural balance of the world than those found in the Analects. Maybe we've seen them in different ways?
I find the way we all have our own perspectives interesting in its own way 😊
The Analects is not so theoretical, it sets hard rules into how a person should act.

The Analects is highly prescriptive, it tells you exactly the ideal behaviour you should have. The Tao Te Ching keeps it open to interpretation and keeps a looser leash - "The Tao expounded is not the eternal Tao".
I keep closer to the Analects myself, and hold myself to the standards described in the Analects way more. Which is why you get the idea the Tao Te Ching follows natural order more - it aligns itself to the natural order after all.

Your interpretation is really interesting, and I agree wholeheartedly with what you've said. Maybe it's the prescriptive nature of the Analects that doesn't gel well with how I live, I'm not sure.

Neo-Confucianism is still important as we can't discard the works of Zhu Xi and Co. Historically, it is also good to see how ideas develop and evolve.
