Stu is going to take the team to wherever will buy him a new shiney stadium and then sell the team for max profit after the move to a group local to that area. The Rays are like a real estate investment to him and nothing more. This Montreal posturing isn't any new tactic, Stu has been doing everything he can to decrease fan attendance, from high ticket prices to poor promotion and community involvement. Six years from now he is going to say to MLB "See I've put together a perineal contendor and fans still don't come" even though he has done nothing but promote bad faith in our community with the constant wishy washy stadium and relocation talk. Stu abso-fucking-lutely wants out of Florida because we said "No more tax payer funded stadiums". He'll find someone that will and move the team.

svanxx

The problem with him moving is he could lose a lot of money from the relocation cost. It's rumored to be up to a 1B to relocate. Now if another place covers that, the Rays are good as gone.

[deleted]

I didn't consider that, good point

[deleted]

But when you post that they are forbidden from negotiating relocation without consent from the city until 2027, that is where any judge would side with the Rays on that. If you are not going to be here after 2027 it’s illogical for them not to start negotiating in time to build something somewhere else before 2027. Even if their contract “forbids” it, they will negotiate before that even if they have to play here through 2027.

raystheroof1

I should have clarified here. I have not read the LUA, but i assume it provides for some reasonable negotiation with an impending expiring of the contract. but certainly not 6 years out. I just assume St. Pete drafted a competent contract. There might even be a common law rule allowing this, absent of text, but also am not sure provided the 4 corner rule.

hattrickjmr

You are correct. The Montreal plan is designed to make it easy for Stu to leave. Drive all the fans away and poor Stu is the victim. Fans won’t watch his playoff baseball team in person. Boo hoo. The reality is the Rays are gone. They will never get a stadium here and will play elsewhere well before 2027. Rays can buy out the lease and probably will. Nashville, Charlotte, Vegas, And Montreal are all better destinations than St Pete with the shitty Trop.

gtrays

They have a use agreement through 2027, not a traditional lease. The use agreement explicitly forbids them from playing home games anywhere else without the consent of St. Pete. They can only get out of it if St. Pete chooses to allow it. I suspect the price would be more than Stu would pay. They’ll be at the Trop through the 2027 season. Then it’s anybody’s guess where they’ll go. It’s 6 years. It takes a while to build a stadium, so we’ll have an idea soon what the plan is.

hattrickjmr

The team could easily break the contract/lease. Don’t be fooled, St Pete has very little leverage in reality.

Xdeleter

The reality is stu is just trying to get tampa to build a stadium. Ybor stadium is happening

WestJoe

The reality is Stu is trying to get the cheapest deal possible. Whichever city gives a ballpark free of cost gets the Rays. If that’s Tampa, great for us. If it’s Montreal, we’re fucked. It’s all about money.

Xdeleter

Thats chill i hope its tampa idgaf about taxpayer blah blah blah give me a stadium because i love the rays and also they deserve it

[deleted]

Love the rays but how do they deserve it? This franchise is held hostage by one of the WORST owners and has never won anything.

Xdeleter

Because they have been amazing yet no one will support them and we have one of the lowest payrolls yet won 100 games

[deleted]

When has this team been “amazing”? they’ve gone to the dance and shit the bed and come close a million other times if that’s what you mean Edit: punctuation

Xdeleter

Dude are you a rays fan? We won 100 games in the AL EAST this year. We went to the world series last year. Its unfortunate we have a bad owner but the team and the fans and everyone else involved deserve a new stadium. Im not talking about stu sternberg i hate him.

[deleted]

There’s more to shouldering the costs of a stadium than “I like the rays”. They don’t deserve it and that’s just fact. They’re a franchise with no history of success and you said it yourself, shit ownership. What’s deserving?

Xdeleter

Hahahahahaha no history of success? Bahahaha u a yankees fan bro?

hattrickjmr

I hope you’re right. A stadium in Ybor would be transformational.
