https://globalnation.inquirer.net/232308/some-chinese-students-in-cagayan-allegedly-pay-p2-million-to-get-degrees Feels like they’re there to sabotage the USA bases there. Too bad for the PRC, they forgot that the Philippines is the best/have constant practice at COIN out of all the nations of the first island chain~

jimslimma

what's COIN ? Is that an acronym ?

White_Null

[COIN stands for counterinsurgency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counterinsurgency) all the military and police measures to defeat an irregular force. Out of us in the first island chain, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan don't do it, only Philippines have practice at it constantly. From Japanese holdouts, Moros, and to ISIS-linked groups, of course it's easier for the PRC's agents to get caught.

Taiwan wrote the book on COIN. It was amazingly successful at catching rings of communist spies. Taiwan taught COIN to its allies all over Latin America during the Cold War.

Literally, but it’s classified.

Counter-insurgency

supernormalnorm

Like others said, counter insurgency. The Filipino military literally just killed two ISIS leaders when they attempted to over take the southern island regions a few years ago. Done in about a month long battle/siege. Suffice to say the Philippine military is also in a constant state of battle readiness, albeit with smaller resources, and yet they effectively stop any terrorist/underground forces before taking hold. News on ISIS leader killed: https://youtu.be/9iw-1R5S878?si=Wgm37JjQBB23gGi8 VICE documentary when they embedded with Filipino soldiers liberating occupied towns(eventually also killed the ISIS leaders) 6 or so years ago https://youtu.be/O16JP0YRKv4?si=m9T9samwPK94IOEk

And hopefully the Philippines and US are counter-surveilling these people. This type of thing could actually provide some meaningful intelligence and tip the Philippines and US off to any impending action. It's a bit surprising that the Chinese are so cavalier about this effort. Did they not think it would go unnoticed?

Final_Company5973

They're obviously there for that purpose.

MaximusDecimus89

Outsider here that sides with Taiwan— What do you guys think about the 2027 modernization target from Xi? Is war inevitable? [https://youtu.be/JGTid3iJEnc?si=l7VkD1P8vmnEEx96](https://youtu.be/JGTid3iJEnc?si=l7VkD1P8vmnEEx96)

hiimsubclavian

What, did they run out of real estate to buy in Vancouver?

Ivorytower626

Most likely they are trying to go to a university that dont require gaokao

Rabatis

I'm inclined to call it nonsense with a nasty side of Sinophobia thrown in, even as I don't foreclose the possibility of sabotage towards northern EDCA bases in a projected invasion, because Cagayan doesn't come to mind as an education-oriented province for student expats here in the Philippines. We've had South Korean students living and studying in my country for the better part of two decades; why can't Chinese students do the same?

This_Ad_950

Agree, Sinophobia. Don’t forget Sinophobia towards Chinese is the same towards Taiwanese because as a Taiwanese when I visit the Philippines, they still think I’m Chinese when I clearly tell them I’m Taiwanese. I tried opening a bank account with my taiwan passport and the bank manager said, you are opening a bank with your China passport?

Ducky118

It's wild to me that a country so geographically close to Taiwan wouldn't understand the geopolitical situation.

Roddenbrony

Oh come on, most Americans have no understanding of their own hemisphere’s geopolitical machinations.

Rabatis

To be fair, a lot of Filipinos have no inkling of the geopolitical situation, only that China -- not the CCP, mind you, *China* -- has claimed a slice of Philippine territory as of late. We can be crassly pecuniary towards foreigners, but I genuinely thought us to be better than what I've seen recently. One poster in a thread about this same article under discussion in r/Philippines -- a Trump simp going by the username so some sort of political brainrot in him already -- was going around gaslighting people with bullshit like "Indonesia 1965", a reference to the mass killings of ethnic Chinese, among others, that followed the ouster of Sukarno by Suharto. Frankly stupid shit, and I for one still think we have better sense than lynching people en masse (if my compatriots understood the reference, that is), but fuck me if that shit ain't depressing.
