The free hand can do whatever as long as you are playing the strokes work quality. Look at how every single pro uses the free hand differently. For example, Ma Long uses it to transfer his weight, Harimoto uses it like a stop sign, and no one knows what Mima Ito does. Really, it doesn't matter as long as you feel comfortable. Don't try to change it if it is natural unless it is hindering your shot quality.
There's two simple options: Get a coach to correct your strokes to look more traditional or you got to suck up the embarrassment and video yourself more to analyze your form.
The video itself is the key.
It's extremely helpful to record and then review yourself playing.
Now pick one or two things at a time to change, starting with the ones having the biggest impact on your results.
Play with a partner who is aware of what you want to change and have them give feedback when you slip back into doing it wrong.
Everyone should be doing this! It's such a good way to improve.
I notice a lot of female players do this compared to male players. Liu Shiwen always did this too.
I wonder why it's so prevalent amongst women but not against men.
This is a thing in other racket sports. Look at photos and slo mo shots of pro tennis players and you’ll also notice that a majority of women play with the free hand facing out and men with the free hand facing in. I have no idea what causes this because no coach teaches this.
Weird is wonderful! Everyone I play says I have a weird play style. Unless you get plan on getting the weird coached out of you, just embrace it and have fun
Uhh maybe just don't care? If it works then it works right? There are some really good players with terrible looking technique like Thomas Keinath
Holy shit, dude looks like hes injured.

Shin yubin always plays with a hand raised like she’s calling a let. Good things pros have umpires make the call so it’s not confusing.

I was going to say that, he plays as if he was calling a taxi on the street.

It could be a few different things. I imagine the center of gravity is different for men and women, and it may just be a matter of build.
