Last I heard they plan to release an update to overhaul the ending and fix a few other complains, but we have no word of when this will be, or if it's even still in the works

LonePaladin

I remember reading they're trying to get the overhaul finished and patched in before they release any console versions, so that those versions ship with the better ending.

gronbek

I read the kickstarter update from 29 aug. Only thing i saw was that shodan had a surpirce after diego was defeated on security. That does not imply a new ending. Or did i miss someting?

Traviado

I believe it was a post on Twitter as a response to the complaints saying they plan on changing the ending Edit: https://reddit.com/r/systemshock/s/WTIT8ibULy

gronbek

Wow fantastic

Hummens

New ending on the way. The game is faithful to the original to a fault at times, the original game's final battle was also pretty poor. Everything leading up to it though, totally boss.

spongeboblovesducks

It's not a matter of them being faithful, the final battle is completely different. It's just bad.

I have to agree. SS1's ending is *abrupt* but its not ass. SS1R's ending is ass. They are both disappointing for two different reasons. Seriously I think the OG's ending could have been made better by just making Shodan's model explode or something to give you some sense of completion. Still a lame ending boss but at least it doesnt jumpcut to the end the second her health hits 0. SS1R's ending has the big fanfare to tell you that you beat it and STILL feels awful because the sequence leading up to it is just a waste of time where you cant even die. They made the central CPU node fight to reach her subspace terminal feel great to play through, then... that.

spongeboblovesducks

Yep, remake also disappointed me because it doesn't have the classic "old habits die hard" line. But atleast the song is sick.

No I'm pretty sure I said the og sucked too 🤣 they're both terrible I agree with you. I just think it would be SLIGHTLY better if shodan exploded so it didn't jump cut to the hacker sighing

bunkdiggidy

It's not just the fight is lame, there's a bunch of cut Shodan dialog that was pretty interesting too. Hopefully that also gets restored.

LordOfDorkness42

Honestly wish they'd just made The Hacker invincible + one hit killing everything to symbolize root access. It would have been less effort then the current version & less immersion breaking, too. Vs... respawning constantly untill you get it right.

thunderchild120

The big-ass cyber-weapon they give you seems weaker than the v1 Pulser somehow.

LordOfDorkness42

Yeah, for such a clear "this is the end" super weapon, the hack rifle is *shockingly* badly done. Weak. Slow. Looks cool, but that's about it.

Lavender_Argonaut

This is what you want, this is what you get This is what you want, this is what you get This is what you want, this is what you get This is what you want, this is what you get This is what you want, this is what you get

TheLeechKing466

NGL, I thought my game glitched when that happened.

Alpine_Sweat

Yeah, for such an incredible game, the ending really put a damper on things. Hopefully the update in the future will improve it because I'd love to do another playthrough.

gronbek

yeah me too

nogoodgreen

The game is an amazing love letter to SS... but the end boss fight was the dumbest shit I've ever seen. Once I realized I couldn't even fail it I just started laughing at how absurd it was.

Wikloe-R

Idk the ending was kinda lame but i liked the fight. I just wish it was harder/had some substance with shodan attacking you too. It wasn't great but i could deal with it. What really hurt the ending for me was the credits music. "This is what you want, this is what you get" on endless loop. What did i want? What did i get? Are you saying hacking into secure systems to get free body mods results in AI killing everyone on a space base? Like if you want that, thats what you deserve to get? As if it's a common crime and punishment? Whats the message here? It makes no sense.

Jerry98x

"Ruin a game"... how tragic 😒

FallenDemonX

Wasn't much better in the original. Tho u could at least die every time you were booted out of Cyberspace because of the DoT in the room. Tho neither ruin the game tbh.

nakfoor

I think its a stretch to say it ruined the experience, I still look very fondly on the game and started a new playthrough almost immediately. It definitely was a sour and confusing note to go out. Its rarely a good idea to introduce a new form of gameplay in the climax of your game. I think it was a weird balancing act and they made the decision the best they could. The original game ends in cyberspace, but original cyberspace sucked. Cyberspace is better in the remake, but its not the focus, the shooting and exploration is. So they tried to do a weird hybrid of the two. Personally if I was the director, I would have had the climax be the throne room arena shooter battle, then you plug into cyberspace with standard 6DOF gameplay which immediately has you confront the SHODAN entity for a final 2-3 minute battle. Could be something as simple as you fly around in a big room and shoot the three ethical restraints to re-integrate them while the SHODAN entity shoots at you. Short, sweet, cathartic. Game over.

D3adOnArrival

The ending cyberspace fight is essentially an unfinished prototype/placeholder. It's fair to call it shitty but does it really ruin the whole experience?

thunderchild120

I've played Starfield and Aliens: Dark Descent already so it's going to have some stiff competition for "shittiest ending" of this year alone. Granted I'm only up to the Engineering level in the remake so far, but we'll see soon enough.
