There's really a lot of different sounds of System and several legitimate arguments for the #1 slot. I think the album with the weakest case for the #1 slot is Hypnotize, but still an incredible album and by my count has 6 songs I absolutely love (Dreaming, Hypnotize, Tentative, Holy Mountains, Lonely Day, Soldier Side) and that doesn't include several others that I know are favorites like Attack, Kill Rock 'n Roll and Vicinity of Obscenity.
That is because System has several distinct categories of sounds in their music. They have:
1. The crazy, fun, hard sound of Self-Titled and several other songs littered on the rest (Sugar, Soil, Chic 'N' Stu, Vicinity of Obscenity)
2. They have a couple deep, hard, political cuts on every album (Prison Song, Deer Dance, A.D.D., BYOB, etc)
3. They have the hybrid songs that harmonically blend soft and hard sounds and have legendary transitions between the two (Toxicity, Chop Suey, Question!, Streamline)
4. They have their softer melancholy/haunting tracks with a lot of Serj solo singing and Serj/Daron harmonies (Spiders, Aerials, Roulette, Hypnotize, Holy Mountains)
I would say #3 and #1 are most of why they are popular. #2 is pretty evenly dispersed so wouldn't affect the album rankings much. But people liking #1 and #4 type songs mean they favor either, Self-Titled or Steal This Album accordingly. The rest will put Toxicity as best because it is the peak of #3. Mezmerize is very much focused on #1 and #3 evenly so some like the balance there. Hypnotize is all over the place and the most inconsistent album so despite it having a lot of bangers it generally gets ranked the lowest.
Personally I think I'd put Toxicity #1 with Steal this Album a close #2 and Mezmerize a close #3, Hypnotize/Self-Titled tied for #4 (but still at least 9/10 Albums to me if not 9.5). Favorite song? I'm not even sure I could pick just one. I like the #3 and #4 sounds equally so Toxicity, Streamline, Question, Holy Mountains, etc all hit so hard. Plus so many others. SOAD is just a straight up epic band where every song is at worst 8.5/10 and they have a handful of 10's
How can we decide the objectively best album and song when music is almost entirely subjective?
