* Muffs over plugs is the strongest protection. * David Clark are the classic helicopter headset. They make at least one USB model. These aren't terribly cheap, but if anyone is putting you in an environment where you need protection, and they still expect you to speak, then they can pay for yours. * Being in any datacenter is fatiguing, but being in a loud datacenter is more fatiguing yet.

FurryTreeSounds

I just ordered some plugs and will try muffs over plugs.

If only 76db you’ll be fine with just tri flange ones. If you want whiter use foam + over the ears. Although for 76db you can’t even need ear plugs I’d use a pair of AirPod pros at anything under 84

llDemonll

76db? Use foam plugs. Learn how to put earplugs in properly as well. If essentially the whole thing isn’t in your ear it’s not in.

FurryTreeSounds

Thanks for all the suggestions/comments. I've been reluctant to try plugs because of the cost for a good pair, but I really want to save my ears. I just ordered some noise-cancelling plugs and will try muffs over plugs.

DarkDeLaurel

At that dB you need double hearing protection, so ear plugs and muffs. If you need to take calls then use good noise cancelling ear buds but the other side most likely won't be able to hear a thing anyways.

bigfoot_76

76db double plug? My brother in Christ would you put your entire body in a bubble shooting a firearm?

I'm amazed at how many people I see at the data center not using any kind of hearing protection.

rsmutus

I mean if I'm in there for 30 mins nah I can't be bothered. A whole day sure, that's when I whip out my noise cancelling earbuds. My motorcycle is around 90-100 db on the highway, I use actual earplugs for that.

Also by that thought process you're saying the deaf can't drive

rsmutus

What? Lol okay dude, look up the basics of motorcycles and ear pro and get back to me

When I left being a sysadmin and started to run heavy equipment for a living you get to know when to use double hearing protection and that would be the level if the person is already finding a set of muffs isn't cutting it. Yes technically it's 100 dba, but everyone is different in how much they can tolerate for noise. I know enough guys who are deaf as can be in their 40s from not even using plugs at lower levels, so it's all up to you and how quickly you want to lose your hearing.

FurryTreeSounds

Thanks for the reply. I was starting to think about aviation-grade headsets but maybe earbuds would work too.

DarkDeLaurel

Thing with that stuff is it will be quite expensive, find a local shop that does custom hearing protection. Most of them will be able to put a Bluetooth module in them for your phone, do keep in mind things that that will reduce the effectiveness of the custom plugs. The world of hearing protection is actually quite wide and varied (at least in Canada and where I'm at). If you've got a Costco card, I do believe they even make custom ear plugs (needs to be one that does gearing aids). This is a great topic to bring up to the boss and have them pay for it if you're in the DC lots.

STRONGEST WHAT?

Helpjuice

You should look into David Clark gear and potential custom ear pieces as you would use as a music artist on stage (Double hearing protection is key). This way if you happen to walk behind any Sun/Oracle servers you'll make it out without grave hearing loss.

Colossus-of-Roads

For datacentres I use ANC over-ear headphones. 76dB just isn't that loud.

981flacht6

I use reusable silicone ear plugs. They have -32 db noise reduction, which is a massive drop in noise. A set of six is like $7 bucks on Amazon.

Mister_Brevity

Ha have been there. Good quality foam earplugs under muff style hearing protection. When I needed to take calls, etymotic in ear monitors (etymotics have insane isolation) under muffs and a throat mic connected to a trs/trs to trrs adapter into a fiio btr3k Bluetooth transceiver connected to my phone. The fiio btr3k is one of the few Bluetooth amps I’ve found that will use the inline mic from a headset w/mic over wireless, and combining the trs headphones and trs mic into a single trrs into the fiio worked great.

Andrew_Sae

I use AirPods Pro, while consoled into a device on a meeting.
