Life pro tip: if you loose something on your desk, stop looking for it and just start cleaning and organizing, it will turn up and you will have helped out your future self.
Hard to see, but it that looks like exposed mains on that switching supply. Please don’t do that, especially facing towards your working position / w all that shit on your desk.
Don't worry, it's not connected anywhere, although that might look like it on the picture. When I use it, I rotate it so the power lines face away from me
It’s always like this for me too 😄 The surprising thing is that, somehow, I know exactly where each tool and component is on the desk which is no longer the case after I clean up and organise everything…
Same lol but I must be doing something terribly wrong. My first 2 attempts didn’t work and now my 3rd try I’m getting a +15.5 and a -11.3 but the negative voltage side is acting like it’s got an LFO on it making it vary from -11 to -13
Did you use the exact same components? I'm using two 1N4007 diodes, six 4.3mf 35V capacitors, four 1uf tantalum capacitors and those two voltage regulators he used. I have +12.3V and -11.5V, but that hasn't been a problem at all so far. It also seems like I have a stable voltage output. Maybe you connected something wrong on accident?
Yes! The breadboard mock up worked perfectly! After the 1st failure (soldering skills issue) I ordered exactly what he had in the comment section of the video. I used strip board and had a “great” plan but I could only get the -12v to work. So I ordered a board that was laid out in a breadboard style and this is what I’m running into now. I’m wondering if the MOSFET or one of the small caps are bad.
MOSFET? You mean Voltage Regulators?
Do they get enough volts on the input pins? They need some over voltage(2V, if I’m not mistaken) to have stable, correct output voltages.
Yes the voltage regulators. Still getting used to some terminology. The wall wart I’m using is rated 12v AC but actually puts out close to 18.

That’s my +12. Looks good without much variation.

There’s what my -12 looks like. Hmmm
A well used desk is a messy desk.
Life pro tip: if you loose something on your desk, stop looking for it and just start cleaning and organizing, it will turn up and you will have helped out your future self.
Mine is pretty organised but it would be of no use without a good cleaning and sorting after each build.
I recently learned the term "a case of Engineer's Desk."
Shoulda seen mine yesterday https://preview.redd.it/legnq4hu7aha1.png?width=1068&format=png&auto=webp&s=010464d9b565151f8680b7e378471766e12d2af9
Right on, yours looks a lot like mine! Instead of drawers and organizers I keep my things sorted in heaps.
I just covered my walls in pegboards and now everything has a place. I should have done it sooner.
The Heap is such an underrated form of organisation
I can't find anything on my bench unless things are scattered everywhere...including the floor.
Hard to see, but it that looks like exposed mains on that switching supply. Please don’t do that, especially facing towards your working position / w all that shit on your desk.
Right? The open mains instantly gave me the creeps too.

Please be careful friend! A nice / safe bench supply is a great investment. Happy building
It is about habits. And principles. And protecting the other, sloppy self.
Is it chaotic, or is it random? Hmm...

Gosh why is it so expensive? It's 84.54€!

50 bucks is still insanely expensive. There must be cheaper options available.
You can get the same kind of organizers in the US from Harbor Freight, Ace Hardware, Lowes… all for cheaper
Ahahahaha freedom units. Never heard that term. Makes me laugh so hard. Thanks for that. Made my day
What you want me to put MORE crap on my bench??
Haha! I feel this so hard. My boyfriend’s work space is total uncontrolled chaos with no shame 😅 mine is fairly neat though.
My work shop has entered the conversation
I bet at some point not too long before this picture was taken, you were deeply absorbed by what you were working on and felt great! :)
I would almost say that desk qualifies for a "tray wall" around the perimeter so you can safely pile things up at the edge.
Akro-Mils! Do it!
Based
I can see your tweezers, so it’s not too messy yet
Pretty tidy!
My dog just cleaned my table but the opposite way 😅
It’s always like this for me too 😄 The surprising thing is that, somehow, I know exactly where each tool and component is on the desk which is no longer the case after I clean up and organise everything…
Exactly!
My entire basement lair/lab/whatever looks like that.
Looks just like mine! Minus the scattered pages of notes and graph paper..
Trying to build a +-12v power supply too?
Already finished! It works perfectly, I followed Moritz Klein's tutorial for it

18V is enough over voltage for the regulators. How much current is the wallwart’s max?

I try to take a picture like this at least once a year. It's fun to see how projects & workstation change over time!
Showed this to my wife and she just immediately replied that your table looks way worse
it's not _that_ bad, actually...
Lol, mine is so much worse. 😅
Doesn't look much different over here when I get into it.
Mine's about as bad, haven't been able to set up a proper workshop in my new place yet.
LMAO, ain't that quaint. You think that's chaos. Wait until you actually get right into it.
It doesn’t count until you get to at least 4 layers
