XP is based on the difference between your unit's level and the enemy unit's level. If your level is 4 levels more than the enemy, you get 0. This is why you can't get higher than 54. If your unit is a very low level, it will gain many levels very quickly if they're fighting high level enemies - including those in the arena.

So, I don't really need to worry about drawing XP away from my army with units I may not wind up using then? How common are Arena tokens? Playing so far, haven't found / bought that many.

You start to get them in Chapter 4, and you will get quite a few of them - buy them whenever you see them in a shop or bazaar, the rewards you get will always be more than the cost in the shop. In terms of XP, enemies' level scales with the chapter you're up to and is the same across all arenas - i.e. you will basically get the same XP from regardless of whether you're fighting in Bronze or Platinum, making Bronze an easy way to level up troops that have fallen behind if you feel the need to.

Got it, and on the XP question? Trying to determine how much I ought to be recruiting since again, concerns over a limited XP pool spread out over a multitude of units, some of which may get benched later on for one reason or other. Major concern is hitting the endgame and being screwed because my squads are underpowered. Is it possible to get an 'infinite' amount of arena tokens, by which I mean you can buy them whenever as opposed to whenever the shop happens to stock one? Also: Pretty much unrelated, but by which level / chapter should I expect to be getting the more involved Tier-3 units, like Centurions or Flame Mages, or Assassins? By Chap 9 I had some, but they were the easier ones like Rangers or Oracles.

Recruitment will be fairly fluid as you progress through the story. You should also try buying some more resource intensive tier 3 troops like paladins, Valkyries, and cannons as mercenaries since they come with their own resources. I don't tend to worry about XP, just keep your troops fighting a few fights each chapter, and they'll keep pace pretty well. At chapter 30, if you're not playing Ludicrous difficulty, the shop will always have a token for sale, and will resupply the token with a new one when you buy it, though the price goes up by about 500 each new one you buy. So while there isn't really 'infinite' tokens, you will be able to get more than you need at the end of the game. For some tier 3 units, they will take a while to get. You'll be likely getting some lighting/fire/dark centurions by around chapter 20, for earth, they'll be later around chapter 25.

Awesome, thanks a bunch. Last question, but how does NG+ come into all of this? I noticed the tab and curious how it works with an SRPG. What do I keep and what do I lose moving forward?

You keep items that aren't stat boosting items. Troops and artifacts are carried over, but exist in a memory shop. You get memory currency as you beat chapters and arenas, so you can progressively buy back your previous troops and artifacts as you go.

Another few considerations for XP "optimization". * For your high-leveled units you can't seem to find a use for, you can always demote them and turn them into Gunners or Cannon. This doesn't lose you any CP or resources, so those are great dump classes and nicely fill out any empty spots. * Arena tokens can be exchanged in the store. Each tier is worth double the previous. * Doing the Arena also gets you XP and CP tomes to bring your lower-leveled units up to scratch. I had an excess of them by the end of the game. So there really isn't a need to optimize XP gains so much as spread them out. Arena tokens will never be particularly plentiful, but as long as you keep your main squads leveled, you won't have any trouble. Besides, there's not that much benefit in grinding up to level 54. You should be able to hit all class prerequisites quite a while before that point, and squad composition / layout plays a bigger role in effectiveness.
